Eczema: Have You Tried Lotion 😏
2026/10/14
Eczema is not "just dry skin" - and if you've ever been told to "just use lotion," this episode will feel like a revelation. Erica Ramos, DMSc, MPAS, PA-C, CAQ-Derm, breaks down what eczema actually is, why the itch can be relentless even before a rash shows up, and what matters in addition to moisturizer. You’ll hear why creams and ointments usually outperform lotions for eczema-prone skin, what the skin barrier really does, and how a brick-wall analogy helps explain why moisture escapes and irritants get in. Erica also unpacks how genetics can raise the risk of atopic dermatitis. We also get into the bigger picture: eczema does not look the same on every skin tone, newer treatment options are changing what care can look like, and patients deserve more than being told to just live with it. And because October is both eczema awareness month and breast cancer awareness month, Erica closes with an important warning about a rare breast condition that can mimic eczema. If you have eczema, treat patients with eczema, or have ever underestimated how complex this condition can be, this is essential listening.
Your Hair Is Dead. Your Scalp Isn’t.
2026/09/09
Your hair gets all the attention, but your scalp is doing the work. After teaching a scalp health class at Premiere Beauty Show San Antonio (and getting hair extensions for the first time), I couldn’t stop thinking about how much we obsess over length, volume, shine, growth and hair loss while barely talking about the skin and follicles underneath it all. In this episode of Derm Clarity, we’re going below the hairline to talk about what healthy follicles actually need, which labs may matter for hair loss, why biotin probably isn’t doing what you think it is, what the evidence says about supplements, and where PRP and red-light therapy fit in. Plus, I’m sharing what my new extensions taught me about traction, wash days and why your hair and your scalp don’t always want the same thing. Because beautiful hair may get the glory...but a healthy scalp does the work.
Running On Empty And Your Skin Knows It
2026/08/10
Who doesn’t love a good spin on life and skincare? 😉 Turns out, we’re a lot like our skin. When our barrier gets depleted, everything starts to irritate us. In this episode of Derm Clarity, I’m joined by dermatology PA, certified life coach, and author Hope Cook to connect the dots between stress, burnout, caregiving, and what can show up in our skin, scalp, and hair. We’re talking about protecting your barrier...the one on your skin and the one in your life, and why you can’t pour from an empty moisturizer bottle. 🧴🎙️
Hair Loss: So Frustrated I Could Pull My Hair Out
2026/07/29
Struggling with hair loss and feeling less confident? You’re not alone.
Hair loss can spark anxiety and depression, yet it’s often brushed aside in healthcare. Many patients care more about their hair than other health concerns, and that’s okay.
On average, losing around 100 hairs a day is normal, but it’s the regrowth that really matters. If you're worried about shedding, come prepared to discuss your history.
Understanding the scalp is crucial; inflammation or other conditions can be at play. Dermatologists look for signs that indicate underlying issues, and they can guide you through the maze of hair loss types, including telogen effluvium and androgenetic alopecia.
Remember, it’s okay to seek help and discuss your concerns. You’re not crazy for worrying about your hair. It’s a real issue that deserves attention.
BURNOUT: Overbooked and Overexfoliated
2026/07/13
Today, we're diving into a topic that many of us grapple with: simplicity in our skincare routines and overall wellness. As a dermatology PA, I see countless patients every day, often overwhelmed by the myriad of products they believe they need to achieve healthy skin and hair. But what if I told you that sometimes, less is more? In this post, we’ll explore the concept of ‘less, but better,’ discussing how simplifying our routines can lead to better results and less stress.
Understanding the Complexity of Skincare
Many patients walk into my clinic carrying bags full of skincare products, convinced that a complicated regimen is the key to healthy skin. However, dermatology teaches us a different lesson: it’s not about the number of products, but the quality and consistency of what we use. The truth is, our skin doesn’t require an intricate routine filled with 12 different products to look and feel its best. Instead, a gentle cleanser, a good moisturizer, and daily sunscreen are often sufficient.
The Problem with Overcomplication
When patients come in with damaged skin barriers from over-exfoliating or using too many active ingredients, it’s evident that the ‘more is better’ mentality can backfire. Healthy skin needs recovery time just like our muscles do after a workout. Instead of adding more products, we should focus on what we can remove from our routines to achieve optimal results.
Decision Fatigue and Its Effects
In our fast-paced world, decision fatigue is real. As a dermatologist, I make countless decisions daily about patient care, product recommendations, and treatment plans. This constant decision-making can lead to exhaustion. The same applies to our patients; they’re bombarded with skincare advice from social media and beauty influencers, which can lead to confusion and overwhelm. Simplifying our choices can free up mental energy for what truly matters.
The Power of Recovery
Just like in fitness, where recovery days are essential for muscle growth, our skin also thrives on periods of rest. The skin undergoes repair processes overnight, and too many products can disrupt this natural cycle. By allowing our skin to heal without constant interference, we promote healthier, more resilient skin.
The Role of Ingredients
When selecting products, it’s crucial to focus on the ingredients and their purposes rather than simply what’s trending. Many people are drawn to products based on marketing claims rather than their actual benefits. As dermatologists, we assess whether an ingredient serves a functional purpose in a formulation. Understanding what you’re putting on your skin can lead to better choices and more effective results.
Hair Care: More Isn’t Always Better
Hair care is another area where the ‘more is better’ mentality can lead to frustration. Patients often try numerous remedies for hair loss, from oils to supplements, without understanding the underlying cause of their hair thinning. This is why consulting a dermatologist is vital; we can help identify the root cause of hair loss and recommend appropriate treatments rather than letting patients guess with ineffective products.
The Importance of Professional Guidance
When it comes to skincare and hair care, professional guidance can save time, money, and emotional distress. A dermatologist will take the time to ask critical questions about your history and symptoms, potentially ordering lab work or conducting a dermoscopy to provide a comprehensive treatment plan. Understanding the science behind your skin and hair can lead to more effective, targeted solutions.
Key Takeaways
- Less is More: Simplifying your skincare routine can lead to better results. Focus on quality over quantity.
- Decision Fatigue is Real: Reducing the number of choices you make can free up mental energy.
- Recovery is Essential: Just like muscles, our skin needs time to recover and heal.
- Know Your Ingredients: Choose products based on their efficacy, not just their marketing claims.
Pimples, Potions, and Pore Decisions
2026/06/20
Today we're going to talk about a question I get a lot in clinic from parents, which is my child's dealing with acne. Is there something that I can have them use before I bring them into you? And honestly, that's a fair question. If you walk into any drugstore, there are shelves full of acne products. Every bottle promises clearer skin. Every package looks convincing. Everything says that it's clarifying, purifying, balancing, and maximum strength. And somehow, all of them claim to be dermatologist recommended. Today we're going to pull back the curtain. This episode is not about telling you exactly what to buy, it's about teaching you how to think about acne products because.
If you understand the ingredients, you'll stop shopping based on marketing and start shopping based on science.
*This episode is educational, and it does not replace the care from your own dermatologist.

The outermost layer of your epidermis or your skin literally translated the horny layer. So yes, anatomically speaking, your skin is horny. We're peeling back the layers from the surface down to the subcutaneous fat to understand what each layer does, why it matters, and how knowing this changes how you treat your skin.

Immune System Gone Rogue: When Defense Turns Destructive
2026/02/16
In this episode, Erica Ramos, DMSc, PA-C, CAQ-Derm, Founder of RestoraScalp, Host of Derm Clarity, welcomes Mackenzie George, a physician assistant from Kalispell, Montana, to discuss psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condition that affects many individuals. They begin by explaining the nature of psoriasis, emphasizing that it is an autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks the skin, leading to rapid skin cell turnover and the formation of thick, scaly plaques. Mackenzie highlights the importance of understanding that psoriasis is not just a skin issue but can also have systemic implications, including increased risks for cardiovascular diseases and psoriatic arthritis.
The conversation shifts to treatment options, with Mackenzie sharing her enthusiasm for the advancements in psoriasis management over the past decade. They discuss various treatment modalities, including biologics like IL-17 and IL-23 inhibitors, which have revolutionized care by providing effective control of the condition. Mackenzie reassures listeners that psoriasis is manageable and that individuals do not need to suffer in silence. The episode concludes with a reminder for those affected by psoriasis to seek help from dermatologists, as there are numerous effective treatments available today.
