The Show of Shows and Collecting in a Booming Market
2026/08/11
A debrief of my experience at the National Sports Collectors Convention "The National" and SoCo Expo leading into a discussion on my feelings about collecting in a booming market. Andres aka ⁨@champvanderford⁩ 's (humerous) observations about my behavior: [David Attenborough voice] “And here… we witness one of the hobby’s most fascinating predators in its natural habitat: James AKA @madcitycollector. Notice the subtle shift in posture. His ears perk. His eyes narrow. A single whispered rumor of a long-sought card has reached him.” “The scent has been picked up.” “Within seconds, instinct takes over. There is no hesitation. No wasted movement. Like a lion catching the faint aroma of vulnerable prey drifting across the Serengeti… or an ox detecting fresh grazing beyond the horizon… James breaks from the herd with unwavering purpose. Every showcase becomes potential territory. Every dealer, a possible watering hole.” “The PreMo Mafia watches in silence. They know this look. Conversation ceases. The hunt has begun… and it will not end until the quarry is either captured… or proven to be nothing more than legend.”
What's in a design?
2026/07/27
What are the design elements of cards that make collectors want to own them? Design alone doesn't make a card desirable but it is certainly a core features that helps cards stand out in the crowd. These design elements are integral to the art form of trading cards. I go through some examples from my collection to highlight some of the core design elements that make their way into soccer cards and why I appreciate them, especially with my recent run of Topps Premier Gold Wayne Rooney cards that was a main focus for my 2026 collecting goals. I share my observations about how traditional and pop art motifs have started to appear in the sports card space and have translated into some of the more successful recent cards such as Kabooms.
Collecting the Moment
2026/07/02
With the World Cup capturing everyone's attention, I examine how I navigate collecting "moments" whether in the past or present. It opens up a discussion for meaning in collecting, even what the backs of cards contribute to our memories and nostalgia for different players and moments projected forward. I highlight examples of how I've collected moments consciously and subconsciously and how it's added to my enjoyment of collecting.
How Trophies Affect Collectibility
2026/05/30
I invite Andrew @st_croix_cards on IG into this live discussion about how major trophies in soccer affect the collectibility of the players and teams. As an Arsenal supporter, Andrew has insight into how their first Premier League trophy in 22 year contributes to the collectibility of this team as well as how a Champions League win on Saturday affects the trajectory of Arsenal and PSG players, We will also dive into the upcoming World Cup and how success there may or may not lead to a strong hobby following.

2026/05/30
Part two of this two part series I explore how I would use a long term approach rather than short term speculative strategy to collect the "players to watch' in the 2026 World Cup.

Revisiting 2017-18 Topps Chrome UEFA Champions League with Seth @soccercardcorner
2026/05/16
Seth (@soccercardcorner) and I revisit our discussion on collecting 2017-18 Topps Chrome UEFA Champions League set. We last discussed the state of our set collecting on Seth's YouTube channel in November 2023 after dozens of red refractors were auction off within a few week span. Recently, the market for 2017 Topps Chrome has shifted again with sales increasing by multiples hitting all time highs. We discuss the validation but also the uncertainty it creates when the price seem to explode overnight and how it changes our mindset in collecting the set going forward.
Fading the Hype to Find the Joy in Collecting
2026/05/01
Travis @harrykanecards joined me this week to discuss why he abandoned collecting prospects and faded the hype in the market to supercollect Harry Kane. Lots of insights and vibes in the discussion of the state of the Harry Kane market and what it can tell us about the soccer card space at large.
Collecting Before the Soccer Card Explosion
2026/04/24
I'm joined by Damian ⁨@retrosoccercards⁩ for a conversation about collecting soccer cards before the explosion of this hobby niche. He has been a dedicated collector of Premier League cards since he first started collected with Topps Premier Gold 2003. The mindset and joy he finds collecting were cultivated in a time before there were big chases. It was about completion and binders preserving his memories and the history of the league in card form. As the landscape began to shift in 2013 with modern parallels, he retained his soul as a set collector and evolved his approach as the soccer card hobby's popularity has blossomed.
Collecting Off The Beaten Path
2026/04/17
Noah ( ⁨@Noahcollectssoccer⁩ ) joins me for a conversation about what draws him to soccer cards and stickers that some may call oddballs. The rarity and context of these cards can bring extra meaning and nostalgia, especially for soccer fans of the 90s and 00s.

2026/03/27
I discuss the recent auction sales of 2014 Panini Prizm World Cup 1/1 Samba and Black parallels at Goldin Elite auctions. I share my thoughts and opinions on these sales and what they might mean for the soccer card collecting space going forward.
The PreMo Conundrum
2026/03/20
Matt from The PreMo Podcast joined me this week for a conversation about the Pre-Modern Space in Soccer/Football Collecting, its strengths, the factors that hold it back from gaining the same attention as modern cards and the future outlook for this era.
Collecting the World Cup Part 3 - The Legend of 2014 Panini Prizm World Cup
2026/03/13
In part 3 of my "Collecting the World Cup" series, I discuss how most modern collectors have heard of the iconic 2014 Panini Prizm World Cup set that ignited the modern soccer (football) collecting era, but I dig into the populations and sales data to highlight how rare and scarce these cards are in the market. And despite some strong sales, the set is still accessible price wise for collectors and can be great place to be for collectors of iconic players in the first modern iconic set.
