Punching Down

Are comedians going too far these days? Some comedians say the audience has become too sensitive. Some of the folks in the crowd think comics are taking the easy road by punching down. Both sides may have points, but it is as black and white as social media talk makes it out to be. We sit with comedy veteran, Clint Coley, to talk about the comedy game of yesteryear and where it stands today.

Whose Narrative Is It Anyway?
2026/07/31
There have been plenty of stories told and written about us. Some of those stories have cast us into darkness, while others have carried us to freedom. Stories have the power to shape perception. The perception others have of us and the perception we have of ourselves. What does it mean to control the narrative? In this episode of Tripp After Dark, authors Tyiesha Radford Shorts stop by to discuss the power of writing and owning your own narrative.

No More Martins. No More Malcoms.
2026/07/31
Often, American history is taught through stories of tragedy and heroism. The same could be said for the history of Africans in the United States. Our history is usually reduced to a few political heroes and their tragic endings. This style of storytelling often erases local movements and the conditions that created them. It erases the mentors, followers, and meetings. This hinders us from critically analyzing the past and instead leaves us with nostalgia. That nostalgia leaves us longing for a past that never existed as it was taught. It produces the thought that we NEED another Malcolm or Martin. Tonight, we recontextualize Martin, Malcolm, and the movements that made them.

I experienced the history, the culture, and the people. It all felt like coming to the reunion of a family I just found out I’m related to. In this episode, I do my best to describe my time there and how it changed me forever.

Everyone Is an Expert
2026/07/03
Anti-intellectualism is not a new problem. We've seen this weapon effectively wielded throughout American History. Today, in the era of mass misinformation and content monetization, everyone has become enabled to act as an expert on everything. We've seen entire platforms built on unfounded opinions and loud voices. We've seen right and wrong become a matter of who has more followers. Worse yet, we've seen real experts and intellectuals silenced by popular opinion. On this episode, Scott Woods and Dr. Melissa Crum discuss the damage anti-intellectualism poses to the Black community and how we can mitigate it.
