Could your embroidery business be at risk because of copyright or trademark infringement?
In this episode of the Embroidery Profit Podcast, Hope Yoder breaks down what embroidery business owners need to understand before selling designs, apparel, patches, engraved products, DTF transfers, or other custom items that include brand names, logos, characters, sports teams, college names, military marks, or celebrity likenesses.
Many makers see Disney, NFL, college, Nike, Marvel, Star Wars, or other recognizable designs for sale online and assume it is allowed. But seeing a product on Etsy, Facebook, or at a craft show does not confirm that the seller has permission or a valid license. This episode focuses on why small businesses need to protect themselves, research requests before accepting an order, and prioritize original designs or properly licensed artwork.
Hope shares practical examples from the embroidery and fabric-design industry, including personal-use designs built into certain embroidery machines, licensed sports fabric, client requests involving trademarked event names, the risks of selling copyrighted designs online, and ways to offer customers a safe alternative when you need to turn down a request.
In this episode, you will learn:
The difference between copyright and trademarks in an embroidery business. Why changing colors, redrawing artwork, or altering a design does not automatically make it safe to sell. Why Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, sports teams, colleges, military branches, and recognizable brand logos require caution and may require permission or licensing for commercial use. What “personal use only” means for embroidery designs and licensed fabric. Why buying a design, embroidery machine, or fabric does not automatically grant commercial resale rights. How to evaluate customer requests for logos, event names, celebrity likenesses, and branded designs. How to respond professionally when you need to say no to a custom order. Why original artwork, client-owned logos, public-domain material, and designs with an appropriate commercial license may be safer paths, subject to the terms that apply. How to use the USPTO’s TMsearch database as part of your trademark research process. Why it is important to consult a qualified intellectual-property attorney for legal advice on a specific design, request, or licensing question.
A single order is not worth putting the business you have worked hard to build at risk. Do your research, keep your standards high, offer creative alternatives, and build a profitable embroidery business with original and properly authorized work.

Are you overwhelmed by quotes, invoices, ordering blanks, shipping, customer emails, and all the day-to-day tasks of running your embroidery business?
Before you hire a virtual assistant or add another employee, you need simple systems that make training easy. In this episode of the Embroidery Profit Podcast, Hope Yoder shares how embroidery shop owners can create SOPs, playbooks, and short training videos to document repetitive tasks, delegate with confidence, and build a business that does not depend on you doing everything yourself.
You do not need a complicated operations manual or expensive software to get started. Hope breaks down a practical approach inspired by the “Camcorder Method” from Buy Back Your Time: record yourself completing one task, talk through each step, save the video, and turn it into a clear written SOP with AI. The result is a repeatable training system your virtual assistant, in-house staff, or future team members can follow.
In this episode, you’ll learn how to:
Create simple SOPs for your embroidery business.Choose a screen-recording tool such as Camtasia, QuickTime, Loom, or an available PC recording tool.Identify the first task to delegate to a virtual assistant.Document quoting, invoicing, ordering blanks, shipping, and embroidery machine tasks.Build detailed, repeatable invoices using product part numbers, colors, sizes, and quantities.Record screen-share SOPs for admin work and phone-video SOPs for embroidery machine operations.Use an AI tool to turn a recorded training video into a one-page written SOP.Organize SOPs in Google Drive so your team can access and improve living documents.Keep each SOP focused on one small task, making it easy to find, follow, and update. If you are ready to stop multitasking, free up time, and build systems that help your embroidery shop grow, start with one five-minute SOP today. Record one task you repeat often, create the written instructions, and make it easier for your future team to succeed.

Ep 15: Dave Ramsey-ing It How I Fund Embroidery Equipment Without Going Into Debt

Want to grow your embroidery business and invest in new equipment without drowning in debt? In this episode of The Embroidery Profit Podcast, Hope Yoder shares the real-world strategies she uses to fund embroidery equipment, make smarter business investments, and decide when a purchase will actually generate revenue.
Hope calls her approach “Dave Ramsey-ing it”—looking for money already sitting inside your business before automatically turning to financing. She shares how selling an embroidery machine she was no longer using generated $10,000 in cash, allowing her to purchase a roughly $5,000 machine outright and put the remaining money into savings.
But growing debt-free doesn’t mean never spending money. Hope explains how she evaluates ROI, production efficiency, revenue potential, and business needs before investing in equipment. She walks through the decision to upgrade to a dual heat press that could dramatically increase production capacity while reducing employee fatigue—turning an equipment purchase into a strategic investment instead of an impulse buy.
You’ll also hear Hope and her husband Marv’s different perspectives on borrowing money for business growth, why your personal risk tolerance matters, and the question Hope believes every embroidery business owner should ask before buying another machine:
What is your fastest path to revenue?
In this episode, you’ll learn how to:
Find hidden cash by selling unused embroidery machines, cutters, cameras, equipment, and other assetsSeparate equipment you want from equipment your business actually needsEvaluate the ROI of a new embroidery machine or heat pressAvoid buying equipment just because other makers are buying itDecide when paying cash makes sense and when financing may be worth consideringIdentify the products and services that can generate revenue fastestUse existing customers to create additional sales opportunitiesBuild toward bigger equipment purchases with a clear financial planGrow your embroidery business without adding unnecessary financial stressHope also gives you practical homework: take 20 minutes, walk through your studio or home, identify everything you haven’t used in a year, research what those items are selling for, and list the item that could bring in the most cash first.
Your next embroidery machine may be more affordable than you think—you may just need to find the money you already have.
If you’re building an embroidery business, custom apparel business, DTF business, or decorated apparel company, subscribe to The Embroidery Profit Podcast for practical strategies on pricing, profitability, equipment, sales, production, and growing a business that actually makes money.

Are you making a simple embroidery business mistake that could cost you a customer?
In this episode of the Embroidery Profit Podcast, Hope Yoder breaks down what to do when a client sees a digitized embroidery rendering and suddenly wants to cancel their order—and, more importantly, how to prevent it from happening in the first place.
A digitized rendering is NOT the finished embroidery. It can look flat, show inaccurate colors, and lack the texture and dimension of a real stitch-out. Instead of sending that rendering to your customer, Hope explains why you should test the design on scrap fabric first, make any necessary digitizing revisions, photograph the actual stitch-out, and get your client’s approval before moving into production.
You’ll also learn how to create stronger systems for your embroidery business, including:
✅ Why you should never show clients a digitized rendering
✅ How to properly test an embroidery design before production
✅ Why real stitch-outs build more customer confidence
✅ How to photograph embroidery samples professionally
✅ Why written customer approval can protect your business
✅ The pros and cons of deposits vs. 100% payment upfront
✅ How payment policies reduce your financial risk
✅ Why documenting thread colors, stabilizers, needles, placement, and other job details matters
✅ How repeatable systems can help turn an embroidery hobby into a profitable business
✅ How better processes can lead to repeat customers and easier reorders
Hope also shares a real-world lesson from a $4,100 embroidery order that showed her exactly why documenting every detail of a customer’s job is essential for future reorders.
Whether you’re starting an embroidery business, running an established embroidery shop, learning embroidery digitizing, or trying to make your custom embroidery business more profitable, this episode will help you develop professional systems that protect your time, money, and customer relationships.

Wholesale secrets nobody tells you about embroidery blanks, pricing tiers, shipping, resale licenses, and inventory. In Episode 13 of the Embroidery Profit Podcast, Hope Yoder explains how embroidery business owners can source blanks smarter, protect cash flow, and keep more profit from every order.
If you have been buying embroidery blanks from Amazon, craft stores, Hobby Lobby, or other retail sources, this episode will help you rethink your supply chain. Hope shares practical wholesale strategies for embroidery businesses—especially those serving B2B clients such as contractors, plumbers, corporate teams, schools, and local businesses.
You’ll learn why starting with large amounts of inventory may hurt your business, how to create a profitable sample collection, and how wholesale distributor relationships can improve your pricing over time. Hope also breaks down the difference between true wholesale suppliers and middlemen, including examples such as SanMar, S&S Activewear, AlphaBroder, JiffyShirts, and OneStop. Episode-13_Wholesale-Secrets-Nobody-Tells-You-Transcript.txt
In this episodeWhy new embroidery businesses should usually avoid holding excess inventory. How job-by-job ordering helps protect cash flow and reduce overhead. How to build an embroidery sample collection one garment at a time. Why B2B embroidery clients can create higher-profit, lower-effort opportunities. How to choose wholesale blank apparel distributors based on warehouse proximity and delivery speed. The difference between true wholesale sourcing and retail or middleman pricing. How preferred pricing tiers can lower your costs as your spending with one supplier grows. What you need to open a wholesale account, including a registered business and state resale license. How sales tax, payment terms, credit-card processing fees, and shipping policies affect your margins. How to use vendor shipping costs as an upsell or client-facing option.Which garments are best for embroidery versus DTF transfers. Why beginners should be cautious when accepting customer-supplied garments.Key takeawayYou do not need a warehouse full of blanks to run a profitable embroidery business. Are common embroidery myths costing you time, money, and quality? In this episode of the Embroidery Profit Podcast, Hope Yoder busts eight of the biggest machine embroidery myths shared in Facebook groups—and replaces them with practical advice for creating better embroidery and a more profitable business.

If you want fewer puckers, better registration, cleaner embroidery, faster workflow, and more confidence in your embroidery business, press play.
In this episode, Hope busts these embroidery myths:“Just add more stabilizer or topping—it will fix everything.”“If you can wear it, don’t tear it.”“Just load the design and sew it out—it’s easy.”“I don’t need more than 10 needles because I never use that many thread colors.”“You need a huge social-media following and a killer website to get embroidery clients.”“I can embroider anything.”“I need the best—and most expensive—embroidery digitizing software.”“You have to steam or heat hats before embroidering them.”You’ll learn:How to select the right stabilizer for woven fabric, stretch fabric, polos, hats, tote bags, and more. When to use tearaway stabilizer versus cutaway stabilizer. Why using extra stabilizer can make puckering, cupping, and registration problems worse. The one habit that protects expensive client garments: testing every new design, fabric, and product first. Why more needles improve workflow, efficiency, and profitability in a commercial embroidery shop. How in-person networking and relationship-building can generate embroidery clients without a massive following. Why the right audience matters more than the number of social-media followers you have. What you really need on an embroidery business website, including custom inquiry forms that help turn leads into sales. Why outsourcing embroidery digitizing can save money and buy back your time. How to avoid poor-quality auto-digitized designs. Why hats require proper hooping, cap-specific digitizing, and a different strategy than flat embroidery.

She even breaks down the hat-stitching issues that trip up beginners and how the right hooping and stabilizer choices can completely change your results. If you embroider for business or you’re tired of guessing every time your machine misbehaves, this episode will save you time, money, and a whole lot of frustration. Essential listening for anyone who wants fewer failures, cleaner stitches, and more confidence at the machine. Speaker: Hope Yoder, host of the Embroidery Profit Podcast, shares decades of hands-on embroidery experience and practical troubleshooting advice for real-world machine problems.

Wondering how to find clients for your embroidery business without awkward cold calls? In this episode, Hope Yoder breaks down how networking groups like BNI actually translate into B2B embroidery clients, the real math behind why one networking group gives you access to over 100,000 potential referrals, which businesses make the best cold outreach targets, and a step-by-step strategy using free samples, rack cards, and handwritten notes that builds relationships instead of pushing sales. Plus — why wearing your own embroidered brand is one of the most powerful marketing moves you can make, and why your Google reviews and online presence are what close the deal after someone meets you in person.
