In 1973, audiences discovered that the only thing scarier than the devil was a little girl with absolutely no filter. This week on OH, THE HORROR!, Sam Pancake and Sarah Burns take on William Friedkin's 1973 horror classic, THE EXORCIST. Grab your holy water, keep a bucket nearby, and prepare for a little quality time with the devil. THE EXORCIST (1973) Theatrical Release: December 26, 1973 Budget: Approximately $12 million Director: William Friedkin Written by: William Peter Blatty Actress Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn) is living in Georgetown, Washington, D.C., with her 12-year-old daughter Regan (Linda Blair) when some very strange things start happening around the house. Regan begins behaving erratically, using very foul language, and displaying some rather alarming physical symptoms. After a parade of doctors, medical tests, and psychiatrists fails to explain what's happening, Chris begins to suspect that her daughter might have a problem that modern medicine can't fix. Enter Father Damien Karras (Jason Miller), a Jesuit priest struggling with his own faith, and Father Lankester Merrin (Max von Sydow), an experienced exorcist who has encountered this particular evil before. Together, they attempt to save Regan from a demonic presence that has absolutely no intention of leaving quietly. Based on William Peter Blatty's 1971 novel, THE EXORCIST also stars Lee J. Cobb, Kitty Winn, and Jack MacGowran. The film became a cultural phenomenon, earned ten Academy Award nominations, and won two Oscars. Its disturbing imagery, groundbreaking makeup effects, and notorious production stories helped cement its reputation as one of the most terrifying movies ever made. And yes, the bedroom was actually refrigerated to make the actors' breath visible, Linda Blair's demonic voice was provided by Mercedes McCambridge, and that infamous head-spinning scene is still one of horror cinema's most recognizable moments. So put away the Ouija board, stay out of Georgetown, and join Sam and Sarah for a movie that made an entire generation reconsider their relationship with organized religion, antique furniture, and split pea soup. Marriage, motherhood, Manhattan real estate, and Satan. Rosemary really does have it all. Proof that an affordable New York apartment has always required some kind of deal with the devil. On this episode of OH, THE HORROR!, Sam Pancake and Sarah Burns move into the Bramford for Roman Polanski's 1968 classic, ROSEMARY'S BABY. ROSEMARY'S BABY (1968) Theatrical Release: June 12, 1968 Budget: Approximately $3.2 million Mia Farrow stars as Rosemary Woodhouse, a young woman who moves into a beautiful old New York apartment with her struggling actor husband Guy (John Cassavetes). Their new neighbors, Roman and Minnie Castevet, are a little pushy, a little strange, and very interested in Rosemary's plans to start a family. After Guy's career suddenly takes off and Rosemary becomes pregnant following one deeply disturbing night, things around the Bramford get weirder. Rosemary grows increasingly suspicious of her neighbors, her doctor, and eventually her own husband as everyone around her insists that everything is perfectly normal. Based on Ira Levin's 1967 novel, Rosemary's Baby also stars Ruth Gordon, Sidney Blackmer, Maurice Evans, Ralph Bellamy, Patsy Kelly, and Charles Grodin. Gordon won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as the aggressively helpful Minnie Castevet. So grab a glass of tannis-root-flavored whatever-the-hell-that-is, avoid accepting desserts from the neighbors, and join Sam and Sarah as they revisit one of the most influential horror films of the 1960s. It's episode lucky number 13 and we are packing our bags for Venice, where the canals are beautiful, the grief is crushing, and following a mysterious little figure in a red coat is an absolutely terrible vacation activity. This week, Sam and Sarah take on Nicolas Roeg's deeply unsettling Don't Look Now. DON'T LOOK NOW Theatrical Release Date: December 9, 1973 (U.S.) Budget: Approx. $1.5 million Directed by Nicolas Roeg and adapted from the short story by Daphne du Maurier, Don't Look Now stars Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie as John and Laura Baxter, a married couple attempting to rebuild their lives after the accidental death of their young daughter. The two travel to a cold, off-season Venice, where John is working on the restoration of an old church. But their attempt at moving forward takes a decidedly supernatural turn when Laura encounters two elderly sisters, one of whom is a blind clairvoyant who claims she can see the spirit of their dead daughter. John is skeptical — naturally, because nothing bad has ever happened to the skeptical husband in a horror movie — but soon he begins experiencing strange visions of his own, including repeated glimpses of a small figure in a familiar red coat disappearing through Venice's twisting streets and canals. What follows is less a traditional ghost story than a haunting meditation on grief, memory, fate, and the terrifying possibility that the universe may actually be trying to warn you — and you're just really, really bad at taking the hint. Roeg turns Venice itself into something sinister and dreamlike, using fractured editing, recurring images, flashes of red, and a deliberately slippery sense of time to make the audience question what has already happened, what's happening now, and what may still be waiting around the corner. So grab your raincoat, avoid any blind psychics bearing ominous messages, and whatever you do... if you see a tiny red coat darting down a dark Venetian alley, maybe just let that one go. The moon is full, the neighbors are horny, and the therapy is clearly not working. This week, Sam and Sarah sink their teeth into The Howling—Joe Dante's 1981 cocktail of trauma, serial killers, and sexual tension. THE HOWLING Theatrical Release Date: April 10, 1981 (U.S.) Budget: Approx. $1 million USD Directed by Joe Dante, The Howling stars Dee Wallace as Karen White, a television news reporter who helps police track down serial killer Eddie Quist, played by Robert Picardo. The encounter leaves Karen traumatized and unable to remember exactly what happened, so her therapist, Dr. George Waggner (Patrick Macnee), sends her and her husband Bill (Christopher Stone) to his secluded retreat known as "The Colony." Unfortunately, the locals are a little less group therapy and a little more full moon. Based on the 1977 novel by Gary Brandner, The Howling was written for the screen by John Sayles and Terence H. Winkless. Michael Finnell and Jack Conrad produced, with Pino Donaggio composing the eerie score. Dante and Sayles had previously worked together on Piranha, and the movie is packed with the kind of dark humor, genre references, and familiar character actors that would become trademarks of Dante's work. Much of The Howling was filmed in Northern California around Mendocino, with the Mendocino Woodlands standing in for the Colony and Russian Gulch State Park. Additional filming took place around Los Angeles and Lake Sherwood. And those creature effects are a huge part of why The Howling became a horror classic. Rick Baker was originally attached to create the werewolves but left the production to work on another little 1981 werewolf movie called An American Werewolf in London. The job went to his young protégé Rob Bottin, who created the film's elaborate practical transformations using prosthetics, mechanical effects, and puppetry. The Howling and An American Werewolf in London arrived just months apart in 1981, each offering its own versions of what a werewolf movie should be. Confession is open, and things are about to get bloody. This week, Sam and Sarah take on Thirst—a tale of faith, lust, murder, and one extremely thirsty priest. THIRST Theatrical Release Date: April 30, 2009 (South Korea) / July 31, 2009 (U.S.) Budget: Approx. $5 million USD Directed by Park Chan-wook, Thirst stars Song Kang-ho as Sang-hyun, a Catholic priest who volunteers for a medical experiment that goes very wrong. He dies, comes back to life, and discovers he's now a vampire. While struggling with his faith and his new thirst for blood, he falls for Tae-ju, played by Kim Ok-vin, the miserable wife of his childhood friend Shin Ha-kyun. Their affair quickly turns into a messy mix of lust, murder, jealousy, and some very bad decisions. The film was written by Park Chan-wook and Chung Seo-kyung, loosely inspired by Émile Zola's novel Thérèse Raquin. Park Chan-wook and Ahn Soo-hyun produced, with longtime Park collaborator Cho Young-wuk composing the score. The cast also includes Kim Hae-sook, Oh Dal-su, Song Young-chang, and Park In-hwan. Thirst was shot primarily in South Korea, including production in Incheon and Busan, with many interiors built as sets. Park deliberately made spaces like the hospital and Tae-ju's home feel cramped and claustrophobic, adding to the movie's increasingly unhinged mood. Park had been kicking around the idea for Thirst for nearly a decade and approached Song Kang-ho about playing the vampire priest years before the script was finished. Rather than using the usual vampire rules—garlic, stakes, crosses—Park focused more on bloodlust as a stand-in for desire, guilt, and obsession. The film premiered at Cannes in 2009, where it won the Jury Prize. Sources: IMDb, Wikipedia Show links: Oh, the Horror! Official Instagram Oh, the Horror! This week, Sam and Sarah take on The Blair Witch Project—the only movie where finding a pile of rocks outside your tent is somehow worse than finding a bear. THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT Theatrical Release: July 16, 1999 Budget: $60,000 (initially) The Blair Witch Project follows three student filmmakers—Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael C. Williams—who head into the Maryland woods to investigate the legend of the Blair Witch. When they get lost, strange noises, stick figures, and other creepy signs start appearing around their camp. As fear and exhaustion set in, it becomes clear something may be following them. The film was written and directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, produced by Gregg Hale and Robin Cowie, with music by Tony Cora. The actors worked mostly from loose instructions and improvised their dialogue, often without knowing what the others had been told. Filming took place mostly in Seneca Creek State Park, Maryland, with scenes around Burkittsville and the finale shot at the Griggs House in Patapsco Valley State Park. During the eight-day shoot, the filmmakers secretly made noises, shook the actors' tent, and left creepy objects for them to find, helping capture real reactions. The movie's marketing also famously presented Heather, Josh, and Mike as actual missing people, convincing some early viewers the footage might be real. Made for very little money, The Blair Witch Project became a massive hit and helped turn found-footage horror into a phenomenon. Sources: IMDb, Wikipedia Show links: Oh, the Horror! This week on Oh, the Horror!, it's Ringu versus The Ring: Sadako versus Samara, Japan versus Seattle, and two journalists who desperately need to learn that some media is better left unconsumed. RINGU Theatrical Release: January 31, 1998 — Japan Budget: $1.2 million THE RING Theatrical Release: October 18, 2002 — United States Budget: $48 million Ringu (1998) and its American remake The Ring (2002) have the same wonderfully creepy setup: watch a mysterious videotape and seven days later, you die. Hideo Nakata's Ringu stars Nanako Matsushima as reporter Reiko Asakawa, who investigates the curse with her ex-husband, played by Hiroyuki Sanada. Written by Hiroshi Takahashi from Koji Suzuki's novel, produced by Takashige Ichise, Shinya Kawai, and Takenori Sento, with music by Kenji Kawai, the movie introduced the world to Sadako. Gore Verbinski's The Ring moves the story to Seattle, with Naomi Watts as journalist Rachel Keller. She and her ex, played by Martin Henderson, try to uncover the story behind the tape and the very creepy Samara (Daveigh Chase) before their seven days are up. Ehren Kruger wrote the adaptation, Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald produced, and Hans Zimmer provided the gloomy score. Ringu was filmed around Japan, including Okutama outside Tokyo, while The Ring used Washington and Oregon to create its rainy Pacific Northwest world. Locations included Seattle, Whidbey Island, and Oregon's Yaquina Head Lighthouse. Same cursed tape, same seven-day deadline, but two very different flavors of horror. Ringu keeps things quiet and deeply unsettling, while The Ring goes bigger, wetter, and blue-green-er—and together they made long-haired ghost girls absolutely terrifying. This week on Oh, the Horror!, Sam and Sarah visit the one Scottish island where the checkout process is absolutely getting a bad review. The folk music slaps though, so maybe enjoy it for a bit... but if the locals start creepily stare-smiling at you, time to catch the ferry back home. THE WICKER MAN Theatrical Release: December 6, 1973 Budget: $1.2 million When a young girl disappears from the remote Scottish island of Summerisle, police sergeant Neil Howie arrives to investigate. Instead of finding clues, he encounters a secretive pagan community determined to convince him the girl never existed. This group is like the Olympic gold medal winners of gaslighting. As his investigation continues, he discovers the island is preparing for a ritual with horrifying consequences. Directed by Robin Hardy, produced by Peter Snell, and written by Anthony Shaffer, The Wicker Man stars Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland, Diane Cilento, Ingrid Pitt, and Lindsay Kemp. The folk-inspired score by Paul Giovanni is one of the film's most memorable elements. The film was shot in several locations across southwest Scotland, including Plockton, Creetown, Kirkcudbright, Gatehouse of Fleet, Culzean Castle, and Burrow Head, where the iconic finale was filmed. Because production took place in the fall while the story is set in spring, the crew glued blossoms to trees to fake the season. Christopher Lee famously accepted little or no pay because he believed so strongly in the project, which has since become one of the defining classics of folk horror. You're going to need a poncho this week, because we're diving into Dead Alive—the movie that asked, "How much fake blood is too much?" and answered, "Yes." DEAD ALIVE or Braindead Theatrical Release: August 13, 1992 (New Zealand); February 12, 1993 (United States, as Dead Alive) Budget: Approximately $3 million USD Dead Alive (released as Braindead in New Zealand) is a purposefully over-the-top splatter comedy from director and writer Peter Jackson. It was produced by Jim Booth, with writing help from Fran Walsh and Stephen Sinclair. The film stars Timothy Balme as the shy, soft-spoken Lionel Cosgrove, whose quiet life is thrown into absolute chaos after his domineering mother, played by Elizabeth Moody, is bitten by a bizarre Sumatran rat-monkey during a trip to the zoo. As Lionel desperately tries to hide her increasingly gruesome transformation while pursuing a romance with Diana Peñalver's Paquita, the undead outbreak quickly spirals into one of horror cinema's most outrageous bloodbaths. Ian Watkin rounds out the cast as Lionel's greedy Uncle Les, who somehow makes the zombie apocalypse even worse. The orchestral score by Peter Dasent does a great job bouncing back and forth to match the ridiculous yet gory vibes. What begins as an awkward love story soon explodes into a carnival of severed limbs, possessed babies, undead priests, and enough fake blood to make even seasoned horror fans blush. Rather than aiming for realism, Dead Alive embraces cartoon logic, escalating every scene into something more absurd than the last before culminating in its legendary lawnmower showdown. Think Evil Dead meets Looney Tunes. The film was shot in and around Wellington, New Zealand. Despite its modest budget of around $3 million, the production became famous for its elaborate practical effects, mountains of prosthetics, and an astonishing amount of stage blood. The climactic massacre alone required hundreds of liters of fake blood, helping Dead Alive earn a reputation as one of the bloodiest movies ever made. While it wasn't a major box office success outside New Zealand, the film became a cult classic and played a huge role in establishing Peter Jackson as one of horror's most inventive filmmakers years before The Lord of the Rings. It's a perfect snapshot of the fearless creativity that he would later bring to much bigger productions, proving that low-budget filmmaking can still feel wildly inventive. This week on Oh, the Horror!, we're unlocking the front door to The Changeling. Considered one of horror's greatest ghost stories, because sometimes the most terrifying monster is old-money real estate. It's the story of a ghost that's polite enough to knock first but relentless enough to make you answer. THE CHANGELING Theatrical Release: March 28, 1980 (United States & Canada) Budget: $6.6 million The Changeling (1980) is one of those ghost stories that proves you don't need a lot of gore to be genuinely creepy. Directed by Peter Medak, produced by Joel B. Michaels, Garth H. Drabinsky, and Mario Kassar, and written by William Gray and Diana Maddox (from a story by Russell Hunter), the film stars George C. Scott as John Russell, a composer trying to rebuild his life after a heartbreaking family tragedy. He rents a huge old mansion in Seattle, only to discover it has a dark past... and something inside wants to be heard. Trish Van Devere, Melvyn Douglas, John Colicos, and Jean Marsh round out the cast, while Rick Wilkins delivers the film's haunting score. Although the story is set in Seattle, most of the movie was filmed around Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia. You'll spot locations including Hatley Castle, the Orpheum Theatre, and Vancouver's Hotel Europe, while the mansion itself was created using a real house, a custom-built facade, and studio sets. The story was inspired by paranormal experiences Russell Hunter claimed happened to him in a historic Denver mansion. Sources: IMDb, Wikipedia Show links: Oh, the Horror! Today's travel tip: if you're visiting a sleepy English village and someone uncovers a strange, hairy skull, book the next carriage out of town. THE BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW Theatrical Release: January 17, 1971 Budget: £82,000 When a farmer digs up the strange remains of a mysterious creature in a quiet 1700s English village, it awakens an ancient evil that slowly infects the community. Before long, the village's young people fall under the spell of the manipulative Angel Blake, played by Linda Hayden, while the local Judge, Patrick Wymark, races to stop the growing wave of terror. Barry Andrews, Michele Dotrice, and James Hayter round out the cast in this eerie tale of paranoia, witchcraft, and satanic influence. Directed by Piers Haggard, written by Robert Wynne-Simmons, produced by Malcolm B. Heyworth and Peter L. Andrews, and featuring an unsettling score by Marc Wilkinson, Blood on Satan's Claw has become one of the defining folk horror films, often mentioned alongside The Wicker Man and Witchfinder General. The movie was filmed across the English countryside, and many of the cult scenes were shot at the ruins of St. James's Church. Fun fact: the script originally started as three separate horror stories before Piers Haggard and Robert Wynne-Simmons combined them into one longer story. This week we're checking into The Orphanage—proof that if a creepy old mansion is available for purchase, there's probably a very good reason. Also, that might be your cue to request a discount! THE ORPHANAGE Premiere: May 20, 2007 (Cannes Film Festival) Budget: Approximately $4 million The Orphanage (El Orfanato, 2007) is a Spanish gothic horror film directed by J. A. Bayona, written by Sergio G. Sánchez, and produced by Mar Targarona, Joaquín Padró, and Álvaro Augustin, with Guillermo del Toro serving as executive producer. The film stars Belén Rueda as Laura, who returns with her husband Carlos (Fernando Cayo) and adopted son Simón (Roger Príncep) to the orphanage where she grew up. Hoping to reopen the property as a home for disabled children, Laura instead finds herself drawn into a series of strange and unsettling events. The film's haunting score was composed by Fernando Velázquez. When Simón suddenly disappears, Laura becomes obsessed with uncovering the truth behind his disappearance. Her search leads her to dark secrets hidden within the orphanage and to the spirits of children connected to its tragic past. As reality and the supernatural begin to blur, Laura must confront heartbreaking revelations that test her love and determination as a mother. Filming took place primarily in Asturias, Spain, including the historic Partarríu Manor in Llanes, which served as the orphanage exterior. Much of the interior was later recreated on soundstages in Barcelona to give J. A. Bayona greater creative control. An interesting production fact is that Guillermo del Toro helped secure additional funding for the project after being impressed by the screenplay, allowing the film's budget and production scope to expand significantly. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007 and became one of the most acclaimed Spanish horror films of its generation. Sources: IMDb, Wikipedia We hope you enjoy the show. What would you do if your child turned out to be the Antichrist? I know some parents may secretly think that about their children during the more troubling moments, but The Omen's Damien takes the cake for sure. A face only a mother could love? THE OMEN Theatrical Release: June 25, 1976 Budget: $2.8 million The Omen is a chilling supernatural horror classic directed by Richard Donner, produced by Harvey Bernhard, written by David Seltzer, and featuring an unforgettable score by Jerry Goldsmith. The film stars Gregory Peck, Lee Remick, David Warner, Billie Whitelaw, Harvey Spencer Stephens, and Patrick Troughton. The story follows American diplomat Robert Thorn (Gregory Peck), whose newborn son dies shortly after birth. Desperate to spare his wife Katherine (Lee Remick) the grief, he secretly agrees to adopt an orphaned infant. Unbeknownst to either parent, the child they bring home is Damien, a boy whose arrival may signal the fulfillment of a terrifying biblical prophecy. What sets The Omen apart from many horror films of its era is its atmosphere of mounting dread and its focus on psychological terror rather than gore. Jerry Goldsmith's Academy Award-winning score, particularly the ominous choral piece "Ave Satani," amplifies the film's unsettling mood. Filmed in England and on location in several European settings, the production became famous for a number of strange occurrences on set, which helped contribute to the movie's reputation as one of the best supernatural thrillers ever made. Decades later, The Omen remains a landmark of horror cinema and one of the defining films of the 1970s. Sources: IMDb, Wikipedia We hope you enjoy the show. This one was a must for Sam and Sarah. What better place to start off our podcast than the quintessential zombie flick, the blueprint for all zombie movies to come? NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD Theatrical Release: October 1, 1968 Budget: $114,000 Released in 1968, Night of the Living Dead revolutionized horror cinema with its stark realism and constant tension. Directed by George A. Romero and co-written by George A. Romero and John A. Russo, the film follows a group of strangers who become trapped inside a rural farmhouse as the recently deceased begin rising from their graves to feed on the living. At the center of the story is Ben, portrayed by Duane Jones, whose calm demeanor contrasts with the anxious and fearful Harry Cooper, played by Karl Hardman. As the undead threat grows outside, the survivors slowly begin to turn on each other, revealing that their greatest danger may come from within the house itself.
