Making Sense of Pentecost
2026/10/18
The Early Church: Praying, Seeking, Submitted to the Word
2026/10/18
This sermon examines the period between the Ascension and Pentecost, highlighting the early church's commitment to corporate prayer, scriptural governance, and seeking God's direction. The central message emphasizes that the apostles and the wider community of 120 believers gathered in one accord, prioritizing devoted prayer over passive waiting. The text explores the theological significance of replacing Judas with Matthias, arguing that this act fulfilled prophetic Scripture and restored the symbolic representation of the twelve tribes of Israel before the Spirit's outpouring. The preacher encourages the congregation to view corporate prayer as the foundational activity of the church, asserting that such unity and dependence on God precede and empower all other ministry efforts.

Salvation Comes to Samaria
2026/10/18
Text: Acts 8:4-25 | Speaker: Levi Bakerink | Description: Persecution in Jerusalem drives the believers out into the surrounding areas. Through this Jesus advances his kingdom as his people begin to proclaim the good news of his resurrection. Luke specifically focuses on the ministry of Philip, one of the seven chosen by the church in Acts 6, who begins a fruitful ministry in a city in Samaria. Many come to faith in Christ and are baptized. After Peter and John arrive and lay hands on the new believers, they also receive the Holy Spirit just as the Jews did on Pentecost. But one person, Simon, doesn't fully understand the significance of this moment. He thinks that the Spirit, and salvation by extension, is simply a commodity that can be bought, sold, and used for personal gain. Through this event we learn that salvation truly is the free gift of God, which is proclaimed in his Word, offered to all without distinction, and received by faith alone.
The Church at Pentecost
2026/10/14
The sermon argues that the New Testament church was formally established on the day of Pentecost, marking the baptism of the Holy Spirit into the body of Christ. It emphasizes that the local assembly is the primary institution for God's work on earth, serving as the pillar of truth and the place where believers are provoked to love and good works. The speaker urges the congregation to view the church not as a casual gathering but as a vital source of spiritual nourishment, comparing regular attendance to daily sustenance. Faithfulness to the local church is presented as essential for solidifying assurance of salvation and maintaining spiritual health. The message concludes with a call to enter God's house with readiness to hear and a heart of thanksgiving, prioritizing the glory of God over human activity.
