Now a certain man was sick
Joh 11:1-6
The raising of Lazarus from the dead is the seventh and final miracle in John.
Bethany was located about 2 miles away from Jerusalem,
Joh 11:18.
Mar 11:1
Mary and Martha are mentioned together one other time, in the gospel of Luke.
Luk 10:38-42
Joh 11:2
Mary is featured here as the one who anointed the Lord with ointment.
She did so on a subsequent visit that Jesus made to Bethany.
Joh 12:1-8
The Passover was now six days away.
Matthew and Mark also show Mary anointing the Lord that same week.
Mat 26:6-13
Was this woman also the prostitute in Luke 7?
Luk 7:36-39
This woman in Luke 7 is NOT Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus.
First, the...

"This sickness is not to end in death."
Joh 11:1-16
Chapters 11 and 12 describe the final weeks of our Lord's public ministry.
In chapter 11, Jesus performs His greatest miracle.
He raises Lazarus from the dead after the man had been dead for four days.
It brings the animosity of the chief priests and Pharisees to a full boil.
The raising of Lazarus from the dead is the seventh and final miracle in John.
The internal organs start to decompose anywhere from 24-72 hours after death.
There is no other record in the Bible of a person (other than God, Mat 27:50-54)
bringing a person back from the dead who had been dead for four days.
Let me illustrate the difference with two examples.
1Ki 17:17-24
However, the son had been dead for a...

Joh 10:37-42
But the priests and Pharisees forcefully rejected Him as their Messiah.
Luk 9:5
Jesus went out from Jerusalem, heading east.
Joh 10:40-42
He left the place of stubborn unbelief and came to a place of informed belief.
Joh 1:11-13
It was a place called Bethany beyond the Jordan.
It must have been a bittersweet time for Jesus.
This place held fond memories for Him.
Joh 10:40-42
There was time to rest, and time to take stock.
Joh 1:23, 28-29
Joh 10:40-42
In every generation, the Lord has His little flock of people who believe in Him.

"the works of My Father"
Joh 10:30-39
He and the Father were one:
in the works that Jesus performed,
in knowledge, in love, and in guaranteeing the eternal security of all believers.
Jesus understood that they were never going to believe on the basis of His words alone.
They had tried to kill Him several times, charging Him with blasphemy.
His first appeal back then was to His works as well.
Joh 5:19
The works that I do are the works of My Father.
Joh 5:33-40
Joh 5:46-47
Witnesses to Christ

"No one will snatch them out of My hand."
Joh 10:22-30
What does eternal security mean?
Whoever believes in Christ is saved forever. He has eternal life and can never lose it.
The Feast of Dedication occurred in December.
Today this feast goes by the name of Chanukah.
Jesus had shown them again and again who He really was.
Jesus revealed His identity by His deeds as well as by His words.
Isa 35:5-6
He said He was the Good Shepherd.
He called Himself the Son of Man.
Why would anyone who confessed Him as the Christ be put out of the synagogue (John 9:22)?
Once again, they were setting a trap for Him.
He had told certain individuals in private:
the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:26), and the formerly blind...

"I have authority to take My life up again."
Joh 10:14-21
Their love is two-way. The Father loves the Son, and the Son loves the Father.
Because Jesus loves the Father, He obeys the Father's orders.
In verses 17 and 18, the humanity of Christ is in view.
Here He speaks as the incarnate Son of God, the Word made flesh - Jesus.
Joh 10:17-18
Joh 3:35
Joh 8:28-29
The Father's love for the Son has always been joined to the Son's obedience.
Joh 14:30-31
This love overflows in Jesus' greatest act of obedience to the Father:
He bore the shame of the cross, the burden of our sins, and the curse of death for us.
Heb 12:2
Jesus lays down His life with this end in mind: His resurrection.
Joh...

I am the Good Shepherd

"I am the good shepherd."
Joh 10:11-18
Jesus uses simple language to reveal profound truths.
I lay down my life for the sheep.
The scene passes from the confines of the sheep-pen to the big wide world outside.
Jesus introduces three new figures: the hired hand, the wolf, the sheep not of this fold.
The good shepherd will lay down his life for his sheep.
He has other sheep that are not of this fold.
Joh 10:11
He repeats this in verses 15, 17, and 18 of chapter 10. It is a point of emphasis.
"for" - the Greek word is huper. Here it means on behalf of or as a substitute for.
In John, huper is often associated with a sacrifice on behalf of someone else.
Joh 15:13
Jesus intentionally...

I am the Door of the sheep

"I am the Door of the sheep."
Joh 10:7-18
Jesus begins with a broad figure of speech (verses 1-6) based on sheep-herding.
A shepherd and his sheep; the sheepfold with its door; thieves and robbers.
The religious leaders who heard Jesus could not grasp what this picture meant.
the door of the sheep (verses 7-10), and the good shepherd of the sheep (verses 11-18).
Jesus is
the door of the sheep.
Jesus is
the good shepherd.
Joh 10:7-10
I am the door of the sheep. I and no other.
Until that door opens, they are stuck inside the pen. No freedom. No food.
Life, nourishment, security -are on the other side of that door.
The open door means the shepherd is here.
He is identifying a certain class of men:...

His sheep hear his voice
Joh 10:1-10
Chapter 10 is closely connected with chapter 9.
A shepherd and his sheep; the sheepfold with its door; thieves and robbers.
The shepherd and his sheep pictured the bond between the Lord and Israel.
Jeremiah and Ezekiel compared wicked rulers to shepherds who abused their flocks.
Who are the thieves and robbers?
The chief priests and Pharisees.
The false shepherds robbed the people of their freedom, money, and the truth.
Jesus came to lay down His life for His sheep.
What better proof could there be than the experience of the man born blind?
They put him out to get rid of him.
Jesus puts His sheep forth to lead them.
Joh 9:34-38
This man heard the voice of His true shepherd. He was...

Happy Resurrection Day!
1Cor 15:12-14
Christianity stands or falls with the truth of the resurrection.
Proving that Jesus really died, was buried, and was raised from the dead,
leaving behind an empty tomb, is a profoundly evangelical pursuit.
Paul thought so.
Act 17:2-3
Luke thought so too. As did Jesus Himself.
Act 1:1-3
1Co 15:3-5
1. Jesus really died, and was buried in a known, accessible tomb.
2. That tomb was empty on that third day.
3. After He was raised from the dead, Christ appeared to many different people.
1. Jesus really died, and was buried in a known, accessible tomb.
Luk 23:46-49
Jesus' death was a very public event. There were many eyewitnesses.
Joh 19:30-35
John gave credible eyewitness...

Shepherd of the sheep
Joh 10:1-10
This was unprecedented; a clear sign that Jesus was the promised Messiah.
But the leaders of Israel interrogated, abused, and jettisoned this lost sheep.
Psa 23:1-3
This figure of the shepherd and the sheep is very important in the Bible.
All the way back to Abel! Moses tended sheep. So did David.
Prophets compared wicked rulers to shepherds who abused their flocks.
Jer 23:1-6
The sheep of My pasture are the people of the nation of Israel.
The shepherds are the rulers of Israel.
Shepherds were supposed to provide care and protection for their sheep.
But these shepherds did the opposite.
"thieves and robbers" Jesus means the leaders of the people of Israel.
The Lord...

Do you believe in the Son of Man?
Joh 9:29-41
There are few people in the world who are more obnoxious than a know-it-all.
Pro 26:12
If you think you know all the answers, you won't let anybody enlighten you.
So you remain in the dark about a lot of things.
But what if we're talking about God and salvation?
Remaining in the dark about these things has eternal consequences.
Mat 6:22-23
Here in chapter 9, the Pharisees thought that they knew a lot of things.
"We know."
"We know".
If you already think you're righteous, you won't be looking for your Savior.
Joh 9:16
Joh 9:24
Joh 9:29
Joh 9:34
Nobody could teach these Jewish leaders...
