Bug in the Taters (TOTW)
2026/09/27
The source recordings is Al Hopkins and the Buckle Busters from the 1920&#39s. It&#39s meant to be a pretty fast dance tune and has four parts.

An original tune
Lake Erie
2026/09/19
As played by Tennessee fiddler John Sharp, I wouldn&#39t have know I have Lake Erie on a CD by Bruce Molsky and Bob Carlin hiding under &#34John Sharp Medley.&#34 I&#39m one who appreciates detailed liner notes, but they weren&#39t here. So thanks to Tune of the Week and Mark Gentry this week!
Sweet Nora Lee
2026/09/12
Art Rosenbaum included Sweet Nora Lee in an album and a book subsequently tabbed. He played it in Seeger&#39s up-picking style, but I arranged it for clawhammer here. It&#39s a sweet song with some lyrics, too.
West Virginia Hornpipe
2026/09/07
Here&#39s a &#34barn burner&#34 as played by WV fiddler Clark Kessinger, but more like a rocking chair when I play it. It sure has a range, so I turned to the cello banjo and tuned it just three steps lower than standard to play an A tune out of an equivalent to double C tuning.
Old Blue Tick
2026/08/22
As played by August Merrill, Missouri fiddler, and collected by R.P. Christeson. Missouri tunes are often notey, and I suspect with more familiarity, I&#39d want to simplify this more for banjo ease.
Last of Harris
2026/08/08
John Salyer&#39s tune, played out of &#34Old-G&#34 tuning. I pulled it out of another of my *.mp3&#39s at the hangout: &#34Old G-athon&#34 which has four other tunes with it.
Unknown (sounds a little like go tell it on the mountain)
2026/08/04
The Golden Ticket
2026/07/25
A modern composition of an old-timey tune. It&#39s a bit challenging to play with its timing, but pleasant and lively. The &#34Golden Ticket&#34 may have originated as a well-understood concept from the book and movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Turning Island

Alternative title: Sketch after a Tune by Gautier d&#39Espinal
John's Tune (TOTW)
2026/07/17
As played by WV fiddler Ralph Roberts, recorded by Don Borchelt and Jimmy Triplett. John&#39s Tune is short little tune and fun to hear and play. It&#39s named after the fiddler&#39s grandfather who began every fiddle session with it!
Moonshine vs Hartford with Gtr

A-B Cherokee Shuffle in G with guitar backup
Moonshine vs Hartford No Gtr

Cherokee Shuffle in G (forgot capo:)
Lightning Bug (TOTW)
2026/07/12
Thanks to Carl Baron who has shared a tune he&#39s performed often in a special place at a folk festival. I don&#39t get to see these remarkable little scenes of nature, but I can imagine their bright flight at night.

Description of how of how I play the tune. Banjo aDADe In D and G
