Pastor Russell Johnson picked up Paul's case where he left it. Paul has spent a chapter and a half establishing that he got the gospel from Jesus and not from men, and he has just reported that the Jerusalem pillars added nothing to his message. Agreement in theory is different from agreement in practice, Pastor Russell said, and Galatians 2:11-16 gives us a dinner party, a retreat, a domino effect, and a public confrontation. Antioch was the first place believers were called Christians, and the first room in history where Jew and Gentile sat at one table under one Lord. Peter had been eating there regularly, and after the vision in Acts 10 he knew better than anyone that he could. Then men arrived from James, and Peter began to pull back, afraid of the hardliners at home. The others followed, and so did Barnabas. Paul told him in front of everyone that he was walking crooked. They did not disagree about how a person is justified. They disagreed about whether pushing Gentiles toward the Law fits that gospel. Pastor Russell closed with the Christian life as a river, Jesus describing it from before the cross and Paul from after, the same life in a different order.

Pastor Russell Johnson opened with a photo from his niece's wedding, wearing a Texas Rangers World Series ring that belongs to a family friend in the team's front office. He sent it to Chad Melton and his brother-in-law, and the first thing they wanted to know was how that ring got into his hand. Whose is it? What is the story? Fair questions, he said, since he would be the last guy to have one. People felt the same way about Paul, the last man who should have been preaching Jesus. Where did he get this, and who helped him? So in Galatians 2:1-10 Paul lays out a chain of custody. Three years before he met anybody, two weeks with Peter, then fourteen more years before he was back in Jerusalem at all. Pastor Russell said you do not wait fourteen years to get a second opinion on something you are worried about. Nobody summoned Paul. He went with famine relief in his hands. He brought Barnabas and Titus, an uncircumcised Greek: not a position paper, a person. Titus walked out exactly as he walked in. The pillars contributed nothing, gave Paul the right hand of fellowship, and asked one thing: remember the poor.

Pastor Jamey Bryant opened with the stress test videos that filled his feed after he bought a new phone. A grown man takes a knife to it, drops it on concrete, hits it with a hammer, holds it underwater. Every one of those videos ends the same way, because the point is to keep going until you find the failure point. Teachers in Galatia were telling the churches that Paul was selling a knockoff gospel, so Pastor Jamey ran Paul's own life through three tests. The counterfeit test: Paul says in Galatians 1:11-12 that nobody taught him the gospel, it came by revelation, and he swears to it before God. The impact test: Paul was the worst case anyone could design, breathing threats and murder, and he swung the hammer at the church with everything he had. The gospel hit back and changed his life. The field test: the believers in Judea who had never seen Paul and surely hoped they never would kept hearing that their persecutor was preaching the faith, and they were glorifying God. They recognized it as the real thing, which means the men adding to the gospel in Galatia were the knockoff.

Pastor Russell Johnson opened with rapper 50 Cent's 2003 album Get Rich or Die Tryin', a title that understands how a vow works: this happens, or it kills me. He then took us to Jerusalem in AD 57, where Paul was nearly beaten to death and more than forty men swore before God not to eat or drink until Paul was dead. The chief priests agreed to help, and the plot fell apart only because Paul's teenage nephew overheard it. The Greek word those men used to curse themselves is the same word Paul uses in Galatians 1:8-9 for anyone who preaches a different gospel. Teachers had come into Galatia distorting what Paul preached, and within a year or two the Galatians were deserting it. Paul says he is amazed, and Pastor Russell said the word carries horror rather than surprise, the same picture as Israel turning to a golden calf so soon after the Exodus. Paul reminds them they were called into grace, meaning grace is where the Christian life continues, not merely where it began. Then he shifts from the gospel he preached to the gospel they received, a word for something handed off. They are no longer the audience. They are the guardians.

Pastor Russell Johnson opened the Galatians series with Steve Harvey at the 2015 Miss Universe pageant, crowning the wrong contestant and then coming back on stage to correct it. Galatians opens awkwardly too. Paul gets two words in and interrupts himself to defend his apostleship, which Pastor Russell compared to hearing one half of a telephone conversation: you only insist your calling is not from men if someone has said it was. Judaizers had been whispering that Paul never walked with Jesus and had watered the message down for Gentiles. Pastor Russell walked the map of the first missionary journey, where Paul was run out of Pisidian Antioch and Iconium and stoned and left for dead at Lystra, then got up and walked back into the city. He leads with the resurrection and barely mentions it again, because it is the foundation of the house: unseen, and everything stands on it. In Galatians 1:3-5 the order never changes. Grace is the cause and peace is the effect, and peace that comes from performance is not peace. Jesus gave Himself for our sins to rescue us from this present evil age, a word that echoes the Exodus.

Pastor Russell Johnson opened with the domino trains he built as a boy, grand plans for thousands that his patience cut down to about twenty. The domino effect is how one action ripples through a whole community, and he said that is exactly what happens in John 4. Most of us live in comfortable clusters of people who look and think and believe like we do, and Pastor Russell said frictionless lives are very often fruitless lives. Jesus had every reason to stay on His side of the well and crossed three barriers instead: seven hundred years of racial hostility, the cultural norms against a rabbi speaking with a woman, and her moral reputation. He opened with a need of His own instead of a tract, which Pastor Russell called a point of contact, since the door to spiritual conversations usually opens sideways rather than head-on. He urged us to hear someone's story before pivoting to a presentation, and to know where a person is before naming a next step. Then the woman left her water jar, walked into the town she had been avoiding, and became the first evangelist in John. Many Samaritans believed because of her testimony.

Pastor Jamey Bryant opened with Hiroo Onoda, the Japanese intelligence officer who kept fighting on a Philippine island until 1974, twenty-nine years after the war ended, convinced the surrender leaflets were a trick. Pastor Jamey said most of the world is still in that jungle, striving over a battle won at the cross, and that many believers are too: exhausted, keeping score, afraid that slipping up might prove their faith was never real. Returning to the well in John 4, he drew four things. Grace is a free gift, living water offered without cost, echoing Isaiah 55:1. Grace is not earned but received, since Jesus made the offer before He ever named her five husbands. Grace is secure, held in what he called the double grip of God, the way a parent holds a toddler across a parking lot even when she lets go. Then the text turns at verse 31, where the vocabulary shifts from ask, receive, and drink to work, sow, and reap. Speaking to men who already believed, Jesus calls them to the harvest, and Pastor Jamey said salvation is free but discipleship is costly. He also announced that in October he moves from worship into a new role as Lead Pastor of Equipping.
