Notah Begay III – Podcast #437
2026/10/17
In this episode of the Worldwide Golf Insider Podcast, host Tom Brassell sat down with Notah Begay III—PGA Tour Champions player, NBC/Golf Channel analyst, and the 2026 Payne Stewart Award recipient—courtesy of Wilson Golf. The conversation covered the emotional surprise of the award, Begay’s remarkable journey from a reservation background in Albuquerque to Stanford and the professional ranks, his unique switch-putting approach, his partnership with Wilson, and the work of the NB3 Foundation. A Surprise That Left Him Speechless Begay called the Payne Stewart Award “what an opportunity, what a blessing, what an honor.” The presentation itself was pure theater. During a US Open broadcast rehearsal at Shinnecock Hills, with the full NBC booth (Terry Gannon, Dan Hicks, Brad Faxon, Jim Furyk, Mike Tirico) running through the show, the door opened. Aaron Stewart walked in carrying the trophy, accompanied by Southern Company executives. Begay initially assumed it was a promotional shoot and started gathering his things, thinking he was sitting in the wrong chair. Then Aaron Stewart said the words: on behalf of Southern Company, the 2026 Payne Stewart Award. Begay was overcome. “By the time he got the last part out… I was crying,” he recalled. What hit him hardest was the thought of the families and kids his foundation serves—kids facing domestic, social, educational, and health challenges every day. The award, he said, meant “we really are going to get to do more now.” He noted that people from backgrounds like his historically “don’t win awards like this.” The Native American voice often goes unheard outside of stereotypes. Growing up on or near reservations meant cold showers when the heating bill couldn’t be paid and looking around rooms where no one else looked like you once you left the community. Moments like this, and the parallel story of Teton Saltes (the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy recipient from the Pine Ridge Reservation), matter because they let future generations “dream bigger.” Putting the Award Money to Work The award brings $500,000: $200,000 stays with the Payne Stewart Family Foundation, and Begay directs the remaining $300,000. $200,000 goes straight to the NB3 Foundation to expand boots-on-the-ground programs—soccer, tennis, golf, basketball leagues, official training, nutrition and hydration education, cultural pride, language, and traditions. The goal is to keep kids active when school budgets cut teams and give them an outlet. $100,000 goes to the Albuquerque Community Foundation, which has supported him since 2000 and funds a wide range of local nonprofits in art, health, education, literacy, and more in the communities that raised him. From Collecting Cans to Stanford Begay’s golf origin story is pure grit. His father played in a local nine-hole league (mostly, Begay suspects, as an excuse for post-round beers). Young Notah found an escape on the course. At eight or nine he collected cans, saved change, and did odd jobs just to afford $2.50 range buckets. One summer afternoon he waited in the parking lot of Ladera Golf Course, introduced himself to head pro Don Zamora, and offered to work for free practice privileges. He swept breezeways, emptied trash, cleaned bathrooms, parked carts, and picked the range from age nine until 17. By age 17, he was a top-10 ranked junior with a Stanford scholarship. University of New Mexico coach John Fields offered him a full ride as a sophomore; Begay declined because he felt he needed to leave New Mexico to test himself against the best. Fields, instead of taking it poorly, called Stanford’s Wally Goodwin. Begay attended the highly regarded Albuquerque Academy, which helped open doors. When his SAT verbal score fell short, the varsity soccer coach (also head of the English department) met him at 6 a.m. every morning for 90 days of intensive prep—vocabulary cards, sentence structure, composition. He hit the number and headed to Palo Alto. He remains the only full-blooded American Indian to win on the PGA Tour (noting that Rickie Fowler, also of Navajo heritage, provides additional representation). The support he received along the way is a big reason he feels compelled to give back. The Switch-Putt Philosophy Begay is famous for switching hands depending on the break: left-handed for left-to-right putts, right-handed for right-to-left. He credits the idea to the book Inside the Arc by Brian Stack and Tim Holman. The logic is simple and powerful: you never face a putt that breaks across your eye line. Most right-handers prefer right-to-left putts because the arc of the stroke better matches the break, the putter sits more flush, and the eyes set up more naturally. Left-to-right putts fight the stroke path, eye line, and often produce slight toe strikes that open the face—especially on fast greens in the 5-to-10-foot range. Begay simply eliminates the problem by switching. There is no distance cutoff; the rule is absolute based on break direction. He noted that even Lee Trevino made setup adjustments on troublesome putts, a sign of the Hall of Famer’s genius. Wilson Golf: An Underrated Ball That Passed Every Test Begay’s relationship with Wilson began when the company became a founding partner of his national junior golf championship. Before committing for his PGA Tour Champions rookie year, he spent roughly 18 months testing every major ball—Callaway, Titleist, TaylorMade, Maxfli, and others—across coast, desert, altitude, rain, and wind, plus launch-monitor data. The Wilson ball (both the X and standard versions) was two to three miles per hour faster in ball speed for him and performed well in spin, bunker play, wind, and shot-shaping. He plays the yellow version for visibility in the fall. “I wasn’t the type of player that’s going to do something because of a sponsorship. I want to win,” he said. Champions Tour peers have been surprised to see the Wilson ball, then watched it fly past them. He remains a strong believer in both the product and the company’s investment in junior golf. What’s Next Beyond the broadcast booth, Begay was headed to the Presidents Cup, then the New Mexico Open at Turtleback Mountain Golf Resort in Truth or Consequences (a high-purse state open with a unique local flavor, including nearby hot springs and a space-launch center). His production company is streaming the event with an interactive AI golf analyst named Duff Foreman—an edgy Scottish-accented character who evaluates swings with data and doesn’t hold back. Closing Words Begay ended with the same message he delivered in his Payne Stewart Award speech: you don’t need celebrity, fame, or wealth to make a difference. “You just kind of have to take your time and invest it into areas of interest that mean something to you… There’s thousands of kids that go without food every day that are unhoused. There’s kids battling health problems… The need always outmatches the resource. But if everybody pulls together… I think we can all make it a better place.” Special thanks to Wilson Golf for connecting Notah Begay III with the Worldwide Golf Insider Podcast. Blades Brown on Breakthroughs, Birdies, and the Callaway Family | Podcast #436
2026/09/14
At just 19, Blades Brown is already living a golf life most players only dream about. In this episode of the Worldwide Golf Insider Podcast, host Tom Brassell sat down with the Nashville native (brought to the show by Callaway Golf) for a wide-ranging conversation about his rapid rise, a career-defining eight days earlier this year, his long relationship with Callaway, and why he still sees the game as pure fun. From the Range at Richland to the Professional Ranks Brown’s love affair with golf started the way so many do—with a parent and a club. He doesn’t remember the exact day, but one moment stands out. Around age eight or nine at his home course, Richland Country Club in Nashville, he was hitting balls with his dad when he pureed an 8-iron that hit the pin and stopped a foot away. He looked at his father and said, “Yep, I’m going to try to do that every time.” A decade later, he’s still chasing that feeling. Brown grew up in an athletic household—his mother played college basketball at Vanderbilt and spent time in the WNBA—so competition came naturally. He started competing seriously in his early teens on the U.S. Kids Golf circuit, moved to the Sneds Tour (founded by Brent Snedeker), then the AJGA. College interest was strong: he took official visits to Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Florida State, Stanford, and Illinois. One highlight was watching Vanderbilt upset Alabama in football during his official visit—an electric atmosphere he still talks about. Ultimately, the amateur game accelerated so quickly that turning professional felt like the right next step. “I just started to progress so fast… and I’m very excited with the decision I made,” Brown said. His mother would have loved an “Anchor Down” decision at Vanderbilt, but the pro path called. Eight Unforgettable Days The defining stretch of Brown’s young career came earlier this year. He competed in a Korn Ferry Tour event in Abaco, finished in the top 20, then hopped on a private jet arranged by a supporter for a six-and-a-half-hour flight to La Quinta. The next morning he teed it up in the American Express on the PGA Tour. In the second round he shot 60 and briefly sat on a 59 watch. He had never made a putt for 59 outside of competition; the first time it became realistic was on one of the biggest stages in the game. By the final round he found himself in the same group as Scottie Scheffler. Brown’s takeaway went beyond the scoreboard. “I learned that I love professional golf. I love playing golf. I love the environment around golf. I love the relationships that you build.” He was especially complimentary of Scheffler, who made the teenager feel completely at ease. There was even a light-hearted first-tee mix-up when Brown momentarily forgot he was the one being announced alongside the world No. 1. That week helped secure special temporary membership status, allowing him to play PGA Tour fall events. Combined with a strong position on the Korn Ferry points list (around 10th at the time of the interview), Brown sits in a rare dual-status position heading into the Korn Ferry playoffs—the first of which is in his home state of Nashville. A Callaway Relationship That Started with an Instagram Story Brown has been with Callaway since he was 13. The origin story is pure golf-world serendipity. Playing a round with LPGA player (and friend) Emma Talley, she posted an Instagram story of him draining an eagle putt at Vanderbilt Legends Club with the caption “Watch out, Blades Brown.” A Callaway rep saw it, noticed the Callaway hat, and reached out. He’s been repping the brand ever since. He speaks warmly about the people behind the logo, including CEO Chip Brewer, whom he describes as a genuine family guy who loves what he does. Brown’s current bag is all Callaway: Callaway Quantum Triple Diamond driver (9°) Callaway Quantum Titanium 3-wood (“it pierces the wind a lot more”) Alternating 7-wood (“Heaven Wood”) and 2-iron depending on course conditions and wind Apex Pro MBs (2021 model) from 4-iron through pitching wedge Callaway Opus Wedges (50°, 54°, 58°) Odyssey Ai ONE Double Wide Putter He plays the Callaway Chrome Tour ball (the “dot” version), citing a blend of greenside spin and distance off the tee. Brown emphasizes that equipment is about eliminating variables. “My job as a professional is to eliminate as many variables as possible… I’m swinging the exact same and letting the equipment do the rest.” His advice to everyday players is simple: get fitted, find something repeatable, and stop manipulating the club. Looking Ahead Asked about goals, Brown is clear: play on the PGA Tour full-time. A couple of strong finishes in the upcoming Korn Ferry playoffs would put him in excellent position for a 2027 card. In the meantime he’ll enjoy sleeping in his own bed for the Nashville event and keep making birdies—“birdies usually take care of everything.” His final message to listeners was refreshingly grounded: “Golf is a game. You’re supposed to have fun, play with your friends, play as much as you want, and have fun. That’s what it is. That’s what it’s all about.” From striping an 8-iron as a kid in Nashville to sharing a final group with Scottie Scheffler and building a long-term partnership with Callaway, Blades Brown’s story is still in its early chapters. If the first 19 years are any indication, the next ones will be worth watching closely. Special thanks to Blades Brown for joining the Worldwide Golf Insider Podcast and to Callaway Golf for making the conversation possible. Bettinardi Golf: Innovation & Putting Performance with Sam Bettinardi | Podcast #435
2026/08/12
In the latest episode of the Worldwide Golf Insider Podcast, host Tom Brassell sat down with Sam Bettinardi, President of Bettinardi Golf. The conversation dives deep into the brand’s rich heritage, groundbreaking manufacturing techniques, standout tour success, and exciting new product lines. For golfers serious about their putting game, this is essential listening—and reading. The Origin Story: One-Piece Technology That Changed Putting Sam Bettinardi proudly traces the company’s roots back to 1988, when his father, Bob Bettinardi, left his grandfather’s CNC milling shop to start his own operation. What began as a job shop took a pivotal turn in 1991. Bob spotted an ad for a Callaway Bobby Jones billet putter milled on an outdated manual Bridgeport machine. Convinced CNC technology could do better, he reached out to Callaway. They quickly brought him in after struggling with quality and delivery from their existing supplier. “He figured out how to make a putter out of one solid block of steel. So he coined the term one piece technology. And that was a very big breakthrough in the golf space...” — Sam Bettinardi This innovation delivered superior feel, consistency, and quality compared to cast or welded putters. By the early 1990s, Bettinardi was supplying OEMs like Titleist and others. Tour adoption exploded—from just 5 players using milled putters in 1992 to over 100 by the end of 1998. The brand’s reputation for precision (tolerances down to a human hair) spread rapidly. Growing Up in the Shop: Sam’s Earliest Memories Sam shared warm memories of visiting his dad’s early shop in Crestwood, Illinois, as a young boy. He recalled playing with air hoses on the CNC machines and the excitement in 1998–99 when his father brought home the first Bettinardi hats and putters. “I’d show my friends, oh, your dad’s starting a golf company... Watching tournaments with Jasper Parnevik, Mickelson, Vijay Singh, Jim Furyk... I’ve been born into this brand.” — Sam Bettinardi The family business has remained 100% family-owned and independent for 28 years, now employing nearly 100 people just outside Chicago. They emphasize craftsmanship, innovation, and quality over massive marketing budgets. Competing in a Cutthroat Industry Tom and Sam both acknowledged the golf equipment business is notoriously difficult. As Sam noted, it’s a grind for a medium-sized family company going up against billion-dollar brands. Yet Bettinardi has thrived by staying true to its heritage and delivering premium products. Their impressive staff includes long-time players like Matt Fitzpatrick (year 9), Fred Couples, and Matt Kuchar (year 13, who joined the same year Sam entered the company). Fitzpatrick, a major champion and world-class putter, continually pushes the team on tolerances, feel, and performance. Why Milled Putters Benefit Almost Everyone Sam strongly endorsed the idea that precision-milled putters offer broad appeal—unlike forged irons, which suit better players. Even their upcoming first-ever kids line will be fully milled in-house. “There’s just nothing like it. No plastic inserts... That name Bettinardi on the back means something to us.” — Sam Bettinardi Key advantages include perfect weight consistency, superior feel, and confidence-inspiring looks. Finding Your Perfect Putter: The Selection Quiz Bettinardi offers roughly 28–30 head styles (including lefty options) across lines like Queen Bee, Antidote, and the classic BB series. Their website’s putter selection quiz helps match golfers based on aesthetics, stroke type, arc, and preferred feel. They provide three distinct face millings: soft Fit Face, mid-firm VDF, and firmer Honeycomb. The Antidote Line: Zero-Torque Stability The Antidote series has been a major growth driver. Nick Faldo personally called Sam after trying one, praising its “point and shoot” simplicity. The line uses innovative engineering for true zero-torque performance without excessive screws or awkward looks. “The putter looks like a putter... It’s going to work no matter what [setup you use].” — Sam Bettinardi Matt Kuchar’s strong early results with a prototype (leading the field in strokes gained putting) confirmed its potential. Models like the SB1, SB2, and heel-shafted options blend beauty with high-tech stability. The Hive: Creative Freedom and Limited Releases Sam described The Hive as his “baby”—a creative outlet for fun, limited-edition putters, wedges, irons, headcovers, and accessories. Signature motifs include the Windy City Wizard, Fat Cap, Betty Bomb, and Stinger Bee. Because Bettinardi owns its manufacturing, they can experiment with premium materials and custom finishes in-house (Mother of Pearl, Damascus, unique necks, etc.). A new Hive release was highlighted around the time of the interview. Beyond Putters: Premium Accessories and Gifts Bettinardi Golf isn’t just putters. The online store resembles a high-end pro shop, with quality headcovers, apparel from brands like Peter Millar and Johnny O, and thoughtful gift options. Final Thoughts from Sam Bettinardi “If you’re going to roll a Bettinardi... you’re buying the Rolls-Royce of quality and the best in the business. Our name is on it. We take great pride in that.” — Sam Bettinardi The brand’s independence, in-house manufacturing, and generational passion shine through. Whether you’re a tour pro or weekend golfer, a Bettinardi putter promises confidence, consistency, and performance. Ready to elevate your putting? Head to WorldwideGolf.com to explore the Antidote line, browse The Hive, or find a fitting opportunity. As Tom Brassell summed it up: put one in your hands, and watch your confidence—and stats—improve. Special thanks to Sam Bettinardi for the insightful conversation and to Worldwide Golf for their longtime partnership with the brand. This blog post is adapted from the recent Worldwide Golf Insider Podcast episode. Listen to the full interview for even more stories and details.
PING Scottsdale Tech Putters: How Physics, Alignment and Custom Fitting Are Changing Putting – Episode #434
2026/07/14
PING has never been a company that chases trends. Instead, they've spent decades building golf clubs around one simple principle: let physics do the work. On Episode #434 of the Worldwide Golf Insider Podcast, Worldwide Golf's Tom Brassell sat down with PING Senior Manager of Design Engineering Travis Milleman to discuss the all-new PING Scottsdale Tec putter lineup—a family of premium mallets that combines engineering, neuroscience, and decades of PING design philosophy into one of the company's most innovative putter releases yet. Fresh off Windham Clark's victory with the Scottsdale Tech Alley Blue Onset, Milleman explained why these putters aren't just another face-balanced mallet—they represent a completely new approach to helping golfers putt with more confidence. A Different Way to Think About Putter Design The Scottsdale Tech lineup introduces several technologies that separate it from traditional mallet putters. Rather than focusing solely on minimizing torque, PING continues to embrace one of founder Karsten Solheim's longest-standing engineering principles: Pull the center of gravity—don't push it. Milleman compared the concept to towing a boat. When you're pulling a trailer, it naturally follows behind the vehicle. When you're pushing it backward down a boat ramp, precision becomes much more difficult. The same principle applies to putting. By positioning the center of gravity behind the shaft axis, PING believes golfers gain improved stability and greater consistency throughout the stroke. This philosophy is especially evident in the new Onset models, including the Alley Blue Onset, where the shaft enters closer to the center of the head while still maintaining PING's preferred CG location. Windham Clark's Winning Putter The Scottsdale Tech lineup received perhaps its biggest validation when Windham Clark captured the U.S. Open using the Alley Blue Onset. While many golfers noticed the unique head shape, Milleman explained that the design wasn't built simply to look different. Instead, the onset construction allows golfers to clearly see the leading edge while maintaining the proper center of gravity location behind the shaft—delivering the stability PING has prioritized for decades. The result is a putter designed to inspire confidence without forcing players to manipulate the face during the stroke. IQ Alignment: Helping Golfers Quiet Their Mind Perhaps the most noticeable technology on Scottsdale Tech putters is the new IQ Alignment System. At first glance, it appears deceptively simple—a single dot paired with a clean alignment line. Behind that simplicity, however, lies extensive research. PING developed IQ Alignment using principles from Quiet Eye, a neurological field that studies how elite performers—from military sharpshooters to professional athletes—focus their vision before executing a task. Eye-tracking studies conducted by PING showed that golfers naturally concentrated closer to the leading edge of the putter when using IQ Alignment. For Windham Clark, the benefit was simple. It helped quiet his mind. Rather than becoming distracted by multiple alignment references, golfers can focus on one clear visual cue before making a confident stroke. Why the White Finish Matters One of the first things golfers notice about Scottsdale Tech is its clean white finish. While it may seem like a dramatic departure from recent PING putters, white actually has deep roots within the company's history. PING experimented with white putters decades ago, and the color serves more than just cosmetic purposes. The bright finish increases visibility on the rack, frames the golf ball cleanly at address, and creates a calming visual appearance during setup. Combined with the white grip and IQ Alignment System, the Scottsdale Tech lineup delivers one of the cleanest looks PING has ever produced. Three Mallet Shapes Built for Different Golfers The Scottsdale Tech family focuses exclusively on modern mallet designs. Golfers can choose from three primary head shapes: Alley Blue Ketsch Hayden (new for Scottsdale Tech) Each model is offered in multiple stroke configurations to better match individual putting styles. Rather than assuming every golfer should use the same amount of toe hang or face balancing, PING continues to fit golfers based on three stroke categories: Straight Stroke Slight Arc Strong Arc According to Milleman, golfers rarely change their natural stroke. Instead, matching the correct putter to that stroke produces greater consistency over time. Why Custom Fitting Matters More Than Ever Throughout the conversation, one message remained constant: Get fit. Many golfers spend hours researching putters online, yet overlook one of the biggest performance factors—proper fitting. PING continues to offer: Stroke-type fitting Loft adjustments Lie-angle fitting Length fitting Weight optimization Even tour professionals require individualized specifications. Milleman pointed out that while Windham Clark uses significant lead tape to create an extremely heavy putter, that setup is highly specific to his preferences—not something everyday golfers should automatically copy. Instead, golfers should be fit into a putter that complements their own stroke, tempo, and setup. The Engineering Philosophy Behind Every PING Club One of the more fascinating parts of the discussion wasn't about technology at all. It was about company philosophy. More than sixty years after Karsten Solheim built his first putter in a garage, PING continues to operate with many of the same guiding principles. The same engineering mindset that created the iconic Anser still influences every new product today. Rather than following trends, PING focuses on solving problems through engineering, testing, and physics. That philosophy is on full display in the Scottsdale Tech lineup. Shop PING Scottsdale Tech Putters at Worldwide Golf If you're looking for a putter that combines proven engineering with modern alignment technology, the PING Scottsdale Tech family deserves a closer look. Visit your local Worldwide Golf store to test the Scottsdale Tech lineup and experience the differences between the various head shapes, stroke types, and fitting options. Podcast #433 – Charley Hudak | Sun Day Red
2026/07/10
In this episode of the Worldwide Golf Insider Podcast, host Tom Brassell sat down with Charley Hudak, Senior Creative Director of Sun Day Red footwear. The conversation focused on the brand’s exciting new release: the Presidio, Sun Day Red’s first spikeless offering in its sport contemporary silo. Hudak, joining the show while on the East Coast ahead of the U.S. Open, shared insights into the development process, Tiger Woods’ direct involvement, and what makes this shoe stand out in a crowded market. A New Direction for Sun Day Red Sun Day Red has built its reputation on performance golf footwear with strong input from Tiger Woods. While the brand initially leaned toward classic, heritage silhouettes, the team recognized the need for diversity. The Presidio represents their bold entry into the spikeless category. “We went down both paths,” Hudak explained. “Tiger gravitated toward the more classic, but we knew we still had to have some diversity in our line.” The result is a modern, athletic-looking shoe designed for serious golfers and newcomers alike. Standout Features and Technology The Presidio was engineered with performance at its core. Key highlights include: Full-length rubber outsole with strategically placed lugs for superior traction. Torsional Traction Plate — A patent-pending innovation (with Tiger, Hudak, and designers Tyler and Cody listed) that provides stability while delivering recessed traction lugs for grip on grass, sand, pine straw, and more. Lateral Stability Brace made of TPU to keep the foot locked in during aggressive swings. External TPU heel counter for rearfoot support. Full-length EVA midsole for cushioning and ground force reactivity. Reinforced instep with gillies and backers for lockdown fit. A three-quarter booty construction (a Tiger preference) that prevents tongue sliding while offering easy on/off. Hudak emphasized the team’s focus on real-world testing: “We worked with a consultancy up in Santa Barbara to make sure everything passed the sniff test for Tiger.” Wear testers were impressed — one even said the traction was too good. Comfort Right Out of the Box One of the biggest selling points is immediate wearability. When asked what someone would notice first upon trying the Presidio, Hudak replied: “You’re going to feel the comfort… It’s extremely lightweight, extremely comfortable. And then if you put it in play, you would be really surprised by the performance.” The shoe features varied foam densities in the heel and collar, a slightly wider forefoot, and a design built for long days on the range or playing 36 holes. PGA Tour feedback has been equally positive, with players putting them straight into competition with zero break-in issues. Colorways and Limited Editions The Presidio launched strong with multiple options, including: A special white/red/black limited edition. Black/red (nodding to Tiger’s Sunday look). All-white with gray accents. Black upper with white midsole. Additional releases like white/light blue and gray/navy. A patriotic red, white, and blue limited edition was created specifically for the U.S. Open, celebrating the event and the country. Demand has been “off the charts,” with certain sizes moving quickly. Apparel Tie-Ins and Brand Momentum Hudak also highlighted Sun Day Red’s apparel efforts, including a popular shirt inspired by the one Tiger wore when he won the U.S. Amateur. The apparel and footwear teams work closely to honor Tiger’s legendary career while appealing to today’s golfers. Looking Ahead Sun Day Red continues expanding its lineup, with spiked versions already in development and tested by PGA Tour players. “We have a lot that we’re working on,” Hudak teased. “A lot coming down the pipeline.” The Presidio sits comfortably between the brand’s heritage performance and active lifestyle offerings (like the popular Osprey), ensuring options for every type of golfer. Ready to Step Into the Presidio? If you’re looking for a spikeless golf shoe that combines serious performance, innovative stability technology, and out-of-the-box comfort, the Sun Day Red Presidio is worth trying. As demand continues to surge, visit a Worldwide Golf location or shop online at worldwidegolf.com to secure a pair. As Charley Hudak put it: “Give the Presidio a try. I think you’ll love it.” Special thanks to Tom Brassell and the Worldwide Golf Insider Podcast for the conversation. Stay tuned for more from Sun Day Red — the brand is just getting started.
Podcast Episode #432 – Chad DeHart | Cobra Golf
2026/06/20
This episode of the Worldwide Golf Insider Podcast features an in-depth conversation between Worldwide Golf’s Tom Brassell and Cobra Golf Senior Product Line Manager Chad DeHart, and one thing becomes crystal clear: Cobra Golf is not interested in following trends — they want to create them. From the groundbreaking new OPTM driver family to the rapidly growing buzz surrounding Cobra’s 3D printed irons, DeHart offered a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how Cobra is shaping the future of golf equipment. A Career Built Around Innovation Before diving into Cobra’s newest products, DeHart shared a little about his own journey with the company. Now in his 16th year at Cobra Golf, he has spent time in both sales and research & development, helping bring new technologies from concept to the golf course. According to DeHart, Cobra’s innovation cycle often stretches four to six years into the future, with teams constantly testing and refining technologies before they ever reach consumers. That long-term vision helped pave the way for Cobra’s newest driver lineup: OPTM. Cobra OPTM Drivers: Accuracy Meets Speed Brassell praised Cobra’s entertaining new commercials featuring Tour stars Rickie Fowler, Max Homa, and Gary Woodland — commercials that lean into Cobra’s playful side with warning labels like “Highly Addictive” and “May Cause Insanely Tight Dispersion.” But behind the humor is serious technology. Introducing POI: A New Way to Think About Stability One of the key innovations behind the OPTM drivers is Cobra’s new concept called POI — Products of Inertia. Golfers are familiar with MOI (Moment of Inertia), which measures club stability primarily on heel-to-toe mishits. Cobra’s POI system expands on that by analyzing stability across three separate planes, including how the club twists and droops during off-center impacts. The result? According to DeHart, Cobra saw golfers improve dispersion by as much as 20 percent compared to previous-generation models. That tighter dispersion is exactly what players at every level are chasing. Four Driver Models for Different Golfers The OPTM family includes four distinct driver models: LS – Low-spin performance for faster swingers and better players X – A blend of speed and forgiveness inspired by Cobra’s popular F9 shape Max K – High-stability performance with exceptional forgiveness Max D – Draw-biased design to help golfers fight a slice One of the more surprising revelations during the podcast involved Woodland’s gamer. Instead of the low-spin LS model many golfers would expect a Tour player to use, Woodland put the Max K in the bag because of its added stability and forgiveness — proof that fitting matters more than assumptions. Even at 41 years old, Woodland is reportedly still producing ball speeds north of 190 mph with the new driver setup. Why Club Fitting Matters More Than Ever DeHart emphasized repeatedly that modern driver technology is simply too advanced for golfers to guess what works best. That’s especially true with Cobra’s new FutureFit33 hosel system, which offers 33 different loft and lie combinations. Unlike traditional adjustable hosels that change loft and lie together, Cobra’s system allows golfers to independently adjust each setting for far more precise fitting. At first glance, 33 settings may sound overwhelming, but Cobra created interactive fitting tools and QR-code-enabled driver heads that help golfers quickly identify ideal settings based on their ball flight tendencies. As Brassell noted during the interview, even he was surprised when Cobra’s fitting tool recommended the Max K model for his game. That’s exactly why proper fitting can uncover performance golfers never expected. Cobra’s 3D Printed Irons May Be the Future of Iron Design While the OPTM drivers stole plenty of attention, the conversation took an even more fascinating turn when DeHart discussed Cobra’s rapidly expanding 3D printed iron lineup. According to DeHart, this may be the most important innovation Cobra has ever developed. Cobra first experimented with 3D printing through limited-edition putters in 2020. From there, engineers realized the technology could completely transform iron construction. Massive Weight Savings Create New Possibilities Traditional forged or cast iron designs often save only a few grams of discretionary weight. Cobra’s 3D printed irons save nearly 100 grams in some models. That allows engineers to reposition weight internally in ways never before possible, dramatically increasing forgiveness while maintaining compact, Tour-inspired shapes. The result is what DeHart called a “unicorn” design: Compact blade-like shaping Game-improvement-style forgiveness Increased stability and MOI Enhanced consistency on mishits For golfers who love the look of a players iron but struggle with forgiveness, Cobra believes 3D printing bridges that gap. Demand Has Been Explosive The market response has exceeded Cobra’s expectations. DeHart admitted Cobra is struggling to keep up with demand as the company continues running printers around the clock. The lineup now includes: 3D Printed MB 3D Printed Tour 3D Printed PX Each model targets a slightly different player profile while leveraging the same advanced manufacturing process. DeHart encouraged golfers to experience them firsthand because the feel and performance are difficult to fully appreciate until you hit them. Cobra Continues to Challenge the Industry One theme consistently emerged throughout the conversation: Cobra embraces being a challenger brand. Whether it’s developing POI technology, launching one of the most adjustable hosel systems in golf, or pioneering 3D printed iron construction, Cobra continues pushing boundaries instead of simply refining existing ideas. As DeHart told Brassell: “We’re launching product that has true innovation and it’s going to bring true performance to golfers alike.” For golfers looking to explore the latest in performance technology, Cobra’s newest lineup appears determined to deliver exactly that. And based on the response so far, golfers are paying attention.
Podcast Episode #431 – Bob Thurman | Wilson Golf
2026/05/06
In this episode of the Worldwide Golf Insider Podcast, host Tom Brassell welcomed back a familiar voice in the industry—Bob Thurman, Global VP of R&D and General Manager of Golf at Wilson Sporting Goods. What followed was a compelling conversation that blended nostalgia, innovation, and a clear vision for the future of one of golf’s most storied brands. A Legacy Brand with a Modern Vision Wilson Golf is a name that resonates with generations of golfers. From classic Dynapower irons to the legendary Staff blades, the brand has long been associated with championship pedigree. In fact, Wilson still holds the distinction of having more major championship wins with its irons than any other manufacturer. But as Thurman candidly acknowledged, the company faced challenges in the past. Today, however, Wilson is in the midst of a powerful resurgence. Over the last decade, Wilson Sporting Goods has undergone a significant transformation—expanding its footprint, strengthening its brand portfolio, and reinvesting heavily in innovation. Thurman himself has played a key role in that evolution, bringing an engineering mindset and performance-first philosophy to the golf division. “We’re about making products that help players hit it farther, straighter, and ultimately make more birdies,” Thurman emphasized. Rebuilding Through Innovation and Investment Since stepping into leadership of Wilson Golf, Thurman has focused on two key areas: Product Innovation: Expanding R&D capabilities and bringing in top-tier talent, particularly in metalwoods, wedges, and putters Marketing Revamp: Reintroducing Wilson to a new generation of golfers while reconnecting with longtime loyalists The strategy is working. With strong performance in recent business cycles and a renewed commitment from leadership, Wilson Golf is gaining traction in a competitive market. Dynapower: Distance Meets Forgiveness At the center of Wilson’s product lineup is the revitalized Dynapower franchise—built for one purpose: distance and forgiveness. The modern Dynapower family includes: Dynapower Max: Maximum forgiveness and easy launch Dynapower Irons: Ideal for mid-handicap players seeking distance and consistency Dynapower Forged: A compact, players-distance iron with forged feel On the woods side, Wilson has expanded to four driver models, including the Dynapower LS, Carbon, Max, and the new Max Plus (10K-style)—each tailored to different swing profiles and performance needs. The goal? Give golfers options that are not only powerful but precisely tuned to their game. Staff Model: Precision for Better Players While Dynapower focuses on distance, Wilson’s Staff Model line is built for precision and shot-making. From traditional blades to cavity backs and the newer XB (player performance iron), the Staff lineup blends classic shaping with modern forgiveness. These clubs continue to carry the legacy that helped define Wilson’s dominance in major championships. Smarter Fitting with AI Technology One of the most forward-thinking developments discussed was Wilson’s investment in fitting technology. The new Wilson Fit AI Optimizer integrates directly with launch monitors to analyze: Launch windows Descent angles Spin rates Ball flight consistency This data-driven approach helps golfers get properly fit for clubs—something Thurman stressed is essential. “Golf is hard enough. If your equipment isn’t fit properly, you’re making it even harder,” he noted. Affordable Innovation: Zero Torque Putters Wilson is also making waves in the putter category with its new Infinite ZT (Zero Torque) models. Zero torque technology—popularized by premium brands—helps stabilize the putter face throughout the stroke. Wilson’s version brings this innovation to market at a remarkably accessible price point (around $199), making it one of the best value plays in the category. The Underrated Golf Ball Lineup Perhaps the most overlooked part of Wilson’s lineup? Its golf balls. Thurman highlighted three standouts: Duo: A soft, low-spin distance ball known for exceptional feel Triad: A three-piece urethane ball designed for control and balance Staff Model / Model X: Tour-level performance for higher swing speeds In blind testing, the Duo has even been compared favorably in feel to premium balls—often surprising golfers with its softness and performance. Connecting with the Next Generation A major theme throughout the conversation was Wilson’s focus on younger golfers. The fastest-growing segment in golf today is the 18–34 age group, and Wilson is actively working to connect with these players through modern product design, fresh branding, and a “Play Original” mindset. At the same time, the company remains committed to its loyal base—those “Wilson lifers” who have trusted the brand for decades.
Podcast Episode #430 – John Novosel | Bushnell Golf
2026/04/25
When it comes to finding the perfect Father’s Day gift for the golfer who “already has everything,” the answer might be simpler than you think—upgrade what’s already in the bag. On a recent episode of the Worldwide Golf Insider Podcast, host Tom Brassell sat down with John Novosel of Bushnell Golf to break down the latest innovations in distance-measuring technology and why they make ideal gifts this season. From cutting-edge laser rangefinders to GPS speakers and launch monitors, here’s a closer look at what’s new and noteworthy. Laser Rangefinders: A Massive Leap Forward Golfers who remember the early days of rangefinders—bulky devices with questionable accuracy—will be amazed at how far the technology has come. The standout product this year is the Tour V7 Shift, which Novosel describes as a “home run” thanks to its combination of performance, simplicity, and price point. Key Features: Slope Technology with Visual Clarity - Bushnell’s patented slope feature now includes a green-highlighted slope number inside a vivid red display, making it easier than ever to interpret distances. JOLT + Visual JOLT - When you lock onto the flag, the device vibrates and displays visual confirmation with bright rings—eliminating any doubt about your target. BITE Magnetic Mount - No more fumbling in cup holders or pockets—the rangefinder securely attaches to the cart bar. Improved Weather Resistance (IPX6) - Built to handle the elements better than ever. Perhaps most appealing: premium display technology that once cost $500+ is now available in the $300 range, making it a compelling upgrade for golfers using older devices. GPS Evolution: The Wingman HP Bushnell continues to redefine the GPS category with the Wingman HP, a product that blends entertainment with performance. Originally known for inventing the “GPS speaker” category, Bushnell has taken things to the next level. What’s New: Color Touchscreen Display for easy yardage viewing Enhanced Audio with upgraded speakers and bass Magnetic Cart Mount (BITE Technology) Seamless App Integration with automatic course loading At around $229, it’s not just a golf tool—it doubles as a high-quality Bluetooth speaker for everyday use. Novosel noted that many golfers are upgrading from earlier Wingman models, thanks to the improved sound and added functionality. Launch Monitors: Tour-Level Data at Home Perhaps the most exciting category discussed was launch monitors—technology that was once reserved for tour pros and elite club fitters. Today, Bushnell offers accessible, high-performance options like the Launch Pro and LPi, both powered by Foresight Sports technology. Why It Stands Out: Tour-Level Accuracy & Consistency - Unlike some competitors, Bushnell emphasizes not just accuracy—but repeatable accuracy on every shot. Indoor + Outdoor Versatility (Launch Pro) - Set it up in your home simulator, then take it to the range with ease. Essential Data Only - Focus on what matters most: carry distance, spin rates, and ball data—without overwhelming users. Flexible Price Points - Options starting around $1,500 make this category more accessible than ever. As Brassell pointed out, just a decade ago, this level of technology would have cost tens of thousands of dollars. The Perfect Gift (Even for Yourself) One theme echoed throughout the conversation: these products aren’t just great gifts—they’re smart upgrades. Novosel summed it up best: Upgrade your current device Pass the old one down to a family member Everyone wins Whether it’s the precision of a laser rangefinder, the convenience of a GPS speaker, or the game-changing insights from a launch monitor, Bushnell’s lineup offers something for every golfer—and every budget. Final Thoughts Father’s Day is the perfect excuse to invest in better golf—and better tech. As this conversation highlighted, modern equipment isn’t just more advanced—it’s more user-friendly and more affordable than ever. So if you’re shopping for a golfer this year (or dropping hints yourself), Bushnell’s latest innovations might just be the easiest win on your list.
Podcast Episode #429 – Travis Milleman | Ping Golf
2026/04/21
When we sit down with Travis Milleman, you know you’re getting more than just product talk—you’re getting a behind-the-scenes look at how modern golf equipment is engineered, tested, and fit for real players. In this episode of the Worldwide Golf Insider Podcast, Milleman, Senior Design Engineering Manager at PING Golf, breaks down the brand’s newest irons, wedges, and putter innovations—and one theme comes through loud and clear: performance first, but always fit to the player. The Rise of the “Player’s Distance” Iron: Meet the i540 One of the biggest focal points of the conversation is PING’s new i540 iron, a standout in the fast-growing “player’s distance” category. This segment of irons has surged in popularity over the last decade, catering to golfers who want: The clean, compact look of a player’s iron The added speed and distance of modern technology According to Milleman, the i540 represents one of the most complex iron designs PING has ever produced. Built with a metalwood-style construction, it combines a thin, high-strength face with internal tungsten weighting—delivering explosive ball speed without sacrificing control. But what really separates it? A technology called "inR-Air" (internal noise reduction air). Why “inR-Air” Matters This pressurized air insert inside the clubhead: Dampens unwanted vibrations Improves sound and feel Maintains face flexibility for speed The result? A club that feels soft and controlled—yet still delivers the “hot” distance players crave. And as Milleman emphasizes, distance alone isn’t enough. “If it goes farther but doesn’t stop on the green, we’re doing the player a disservice.” That’s why PING engineers focus heavily on launch angle and descent angle, ensuring shots come in high enough to hold greens—even with stronger lofts. Who Should Play the i540? The i540 is built for a wide range of golfers, particularly: Low handicaps seeking extra distance Mid-handicaps wanting speed without losing looks Players who value confidence at address It’s a “bridge” iron—blending performance and playability for golfers who still want a refined appearance in their bag. Maximum Forgiveness: The G740 Iron On the opposite end of the spectrum sits the G740, a super game-improvement iron designed to make golf easier—plain and simple. Compared to other models, the G740 features: A larger clubhead (heel-to-toe and front-to-back) A wider sole for lower center of gravity More offset to help square the face Everything about it is engineered to: Launch the ball higher, improve consistency, protect off-center hits. Milleman puts it bluntly: if you’re new to the game or struggle with consistency, this is the kind of club that can dramatically improve your experience. The Real Key: Custom Fitting Throughout the conversation, both Brassell and Milleman keep returning to one critical point: You can’t unlock performance without proper fitting. PING’s philosophy is built on three-dimensional fitting, dialing in: Lie angle Loft Shaft weight and profile Even something as simple as choosing the wrong shaft can cost players: Peak height Spin rate Stopping power PING’s newer tools—like their Copilot fitting system—take it even further, helping golfers build an entire set based on just a few swing inputs. Short Game Matters: S259 Wedges While distance gets plenty of attention, Milleman highlights an area where golfers can truly lower scores: inside 100 yards. Enter the S259 wedges, designed with: Six grind options for different swing types and conditions Enhanced face friction for consistent spin (especially in wet conditions) A new “WebFit Wedge” system to simplify fitting One standout innovation is the Dial-A-Wedge grip, which gives visual cues for face position—helping players consistently set up for bunker shots, chips, and specialty shots. It’s a practical solution to a common problem: most golfers don’t actually know how open or closed their wedge face is. A Smarter Putter: Scottsdale Tech PING’s upcoming Scottsdale Tech putters push innovation into the mental side of the game. Two key concepts stand out: 1. “Quiet Eye” Alignment (IQ Technology) A simple dot on the topline helps: Focus attention Reduce distractions Improve putting consistency Backed by cognitive science, this feature has shown measurable improvements in putting performance during testing. 2. Onset Design & CG Control PING continues to emphasize a fundamental principle: The center of gravity should always be pulled—not pushed. By positioning the shaft in front of the CG, the putter becomes more stable through impact—similar to pulling a trailer behind a truck rather than pushing it. The Bottom Line This conversation reinforces what has defined PING Golf for decades: Engineering with purpose Performance backed by data Fitting as the foundation of success Whether it’s the explosive i540, the ultra-forgiving G740, or the precision-focused S259 wedges, every product is designed with a specific golfer in mind. And as both Brassell and Milleman stress, the takeaway is simple: Don’t just buy clubs—get fit for them. Because in today’s game, the right equipment isn’t just helpful—it’s essential.
Podcast Episode #428 – Chris Voshall | Mizuno Golf
2026/04/16
It’s not often you get to trace a conversation back more than a decade, but that’s exactly what made this latest Worldwide Golf Insider Podcast episode so special. Host Tom Brassell welcomed back Mizuno Golf’s Chris Voshall—now Director of Golf for Mizuno USA—for a wide-ranging discussion that highlighted just how far the brand has come. From forged blades to cutting-edge, tech-infused equipment across the entire bag, Mizuno is no longer just “that iron company.” It’s a full-fledged performance brand—and Voshall made that clear. A Career Built Alongside Mizuno’s Evolution Voshall’s journey mirrors Mizuno’s transformation. Starting more than 20 years ago as a test engineer fresh out of college, he’s had his hands on nearly every aspect of product development—from cutting apart competitor clubs for analysis to designing irons, wedges, and woods. Now leading product direction across major global markets, Voshall sees Mizuno’s current era as just the beginning. “It feels like the beginning is just happening, even though I’m 22 years in.” That perspective helps explain the brand’s current momentum—rooted in tradition, but driven by innovation. Mizuno Pro M-Series: Classic Looks, Modern Firepower At the heart of Mizuno’s latest release is the new Mizuno Pro M-Series irons—the M13 and M15. While they maintain the sleek, compact look Mizuno is known for, the technology inside tells a very different story. The M13 is a multi-construction masterpiece: Long irons feature a forged face with high ball speed technology Mid irons incorporate a milled slot for added flexibility Short irons return to a one-piece forging for precision and control The M15, on the other hand, leans into a hollow-body design with tungsten weighting for higher launch and increased forgiveness—all while maintaining a blade-like profile. The real story? These sets are built for customization. “Between the two families, you’ve got five different constructions you can mix and match.” That flexibility reflects a broader trend in golf—combo sets tailored to individual performance needs. Why Fitting Matters More Than Ever One of the strongest themes throughout the conversation was the importance of club fitting. Golfers used to focus primarily on distance and spin. Today, it’s about: Launch windows Peak height Descent angle Stopping power Without proper fitting, those variables can work against you. “If you’ve got a club that goes far but gets there through roll, you’ve got no chance at a front pin.” Modern equipment is more powerful than ever—but unlocking that performance requires dialing in the right combination of head, shaft, and even golf ball. JPX 1 Driver: Rethinking Face Technology Mizuno’s innovation doesn’t stop with irons. The new JPX 1 driver introduces a groundbreaking nano-alloy face technology that changes how the ball interacts with the clubface. The concept is simple but powerful: The material stiffens at rest Becomes more flexible at impact Enhances energy transfer and ball speed The result? Faster ball speeds and improved performance across a larger portion of the face—especially on off-center hits. Combined with two distinct models (standard and Select), the JPX 1 line offers options for a wide range of players. Putters and Golf Balls: The Complete Bag Mizuno has quietly built out a full equipment ecosystem. M-Craft Putters The new M-Craft City Series blends craftsmanship with versatility: Forged in Japan for soft, consistent feel Classic designs across blade and mallet options Premium materials like copper underlay for enhanced feedback For golfers seeking adjustability, the M-Craft X line allows interchangeable components to fine-tune performance. Mizuno Pro Golf Balls Since entering the golf ball market in 2020, Mizuno has made rapid improvements. The latest Pro S and Pro X models deliver: Soft feel across both options Strong performance with urethane covers A compelling value proposition with multi-dozen pricing Even more impressive, Mizuno’s fitting system can recommend the ideal ball based on your swing data—bringing a new level of personalization to an often-overlooked part of the game. A New Identity for Mizuno For years, Mizuno was synonymous with elite forged irons. While that heritage remains, it no longer defines the brand entirely. Today’s Mizuno lineup spans: Players irons and game-improvement models Drivers, fairway woods, and hybrids Wedges, putters, and golf balls All infused with modern technology and built for performance. “Take a look at us again. We’ve got a lot more going on than just that.” Final Thoughts If there’s one takeaway from this conversation, it’s this: golf equipment has evolved—and Mizuno is right at the forefront of that evolution. But technology alone isn’t enough. To truly benefit, golfers need to experience it firsthand: Get properly fit Test different combinations Explore options across the bag Because in today’s game, the right setup doesn’t just improve performance—it transforms it. And as Brassell put it, you might just be surprised by what you find when you give it a swing.
Podcast Episode #427 – Corey Gerrard | Titleist Vokey Wedges
2026/03/31
Titleist Vokey SM11 Wedges Review: Tour-Inspired Technology for Ultimate Spin, Flight, and Control The all-new Titleist Vokey Design SM11 wedges represent the latest evolution in short game performance from Titleist—the most trusted wedge brand on the PGA Tour. In this episode of the Worldwide Golf Insider Podcast, Worldwide Golf’s Tom Brassell sits down with Corey Gerrard from the Vokey Wedge division to break down the technology, tour feedback, and fitting insights behind the SM11 lineup. Built from years of research and validated by the best players in the world, the SM11 wedges are engineered around three key performance pillars: contact, flight, and spin control—the essential ingredients for scoring success. The Evolution of Titleist Vokey SM11 Wedges Developing a premium wedge like the SM11 doesn’t happen overnight. According to Gerrard, the process typically takes 2 to 4 years, combining tour player feedback with advanced R&D. The SM11 builds on the success of the SM10, with insights from Vokey Tour Rep Aaron Dill and Master Craftsman Bob Vokey leading the way. Early testing revealed something unique in the low-bounce T Grind—its center of gravity (CG) aligned perfectly with the ideal strike location (between grooves 2 and 5). The result? Lower, more controlled launch Increased spin consistency Improved carry distance Exceptionally soft feel at impact The key breakthrough in the SM11 was extending this optimized CG placement across all grinds and lofts, ensuring consistent flight and performance regardless of wedge setup. Tour Feedback: What PGA Tour Players Are Saying When the SM11 wedges arrived on tour, the reaction from players was immediate—and telling. Many pros initially asked, “Nothing changed, right?”—a testament to how much they already trusted the look, feel, and performance of previous Vokey wedges. But the improvements quickly stood out: Softer, more solid feel Improved turf interaction Enhanced spin control across different shot types Importantly, tour players aren’t chasing maximum spin—they’re chasing predictable spin. With the SM11 wedges, players can generate high spin around the greens while maintaining control on full shots to avoid excessive rollback. This same principle applies to amateur golfers: consistent spin equals better distance control and lower scores. Why Contact Is King in Wedge Play One of the biggest takeaways from Gerrard: strike location matters more than anything else. The ideal contact point—between grooves 2 and 5—activates the wedge’s center of gravity and groove design. Striking too high on the face leads to: Ballooning shots Reduced spin Loss of distance and control For better short game results, players should focus on: Lower, controlled trajectories Clean, centered contact Spin that checks instead of overreacts As Gerrard explains, even bunker shots don’t require excessive height—controlled, lower flight with spin leads to closer proximity and more up-and-downs. SM11 Wedge Grinds Explained: Finding the Right Setup The Titleist Vokey SM11 wedges feature six tour-proven grinds: F Grind S Grind M Grind D Grind K Grind T Grind With 27 loft, bounce, and grind combinations, the SM11 lineup provides unmatched versatility from pitching wedge through lob wedge. Instead of using the same grind throughout your set, Gerrard recommends building a wedge “toolbox”: Higher bounce for soft conditions and sand shots Lower bounce for firm turf and versatility around the greens This approach allows golfers to adapt to different lies, turf conditions, and shot requirements. The Importance of Wedge Fitting for Better Short Game Performance A proper wedge fitting is essential to unlocking the full potential of the SM11 wedges. The process typically includes: Gapping analysis (maintaining ~15-yard distance gaps) Grind testing, including "blind tests" to identify best performance Evaluation of turf interaction and strike consistency Custom shaft and grip selection for optimal feel and control Whether indoors or outdoors, wedge fitting often reveals performance gains golfers didn’t expect—especially around the greens. Premium Finishes and Custom Options The SM11 wedges are available in multiple premium finishes, including: Tour Chrome Nickel Jet Black (with fingerprint-resistant coating) Custom options, including raw finishes, allow golfers to further personalize their wedges for performance and aesthetics. Final Thoughts: Improve Your Short Game with Titleist Vokey SM11 The Titleist Vokey SM11 wedges deliver tour-level performance through advanced CG placement, refined grinds, and exceptional spin control. As Corey Gerrard emphasizes, better scoring starts inside 100 yards. Spend more time practicing your short game, focus on clean contact, and dial in your trajectory and spin. Lastly, touch on the importance of getting custom fit for your Titleist Vokey SM11 wedges. Episode #423: Inside LAB Golf with CEO Sam Hahn
2025/11/26
Worldwide Golf Insider Podcast – Episode #423 On episode #423 of the Worldwide Golf Insider podcast, host Tom Brassell sits down with LAB Golf CEO Sam Hahn for a conversation that blends childhood memories, creative detours, breakthrough technology, and big-time wins on the PGA Tour. If you’ve ever wondered how someone goes from a life in music to leading one of the most talked-about putter companies in golf, this episode is for you. Falling in Love with the Game Sam’s golf story starts the way many of ours do: on the course with his dad. He talks about those early days as a kid, learning the game one swing (and one chunked shot) at a time. It wasn’t about perfection back then—it was about time together, the feel of a well-struck shot, and the simple magic of walking down a fairway with someone you love. Those formative rounds planted a seed. Even though Sam wouldn’t stay with the game continuously, golf was always there in the background—waiting. Walking Away… and Then Coming Back Like a lot of golfers, Sam eventually drifted away from the game. Life pulled him in other directions, and golf took a back seat. He set the clubs aside, focusing instead on another passion: music. For a while, that became his world—creativity, performance, and the grind that comes with trying to make it in a competitive industry. But golf has a funny way of pulling people back. Sam shares how, after years away, he found himself returning to the game with a fresh perspective. No longer just a casual pastime, golf became an obsession again—this time, with a twist. He wasn’t just interested in playing better. He wanted to understand why certain things worked… especially on the greens. That curiosity became the foundation for what would eventually become LAB Golf. From Music to Making Putters: A Creative Pivot Most people see music and golf as worlds apart. Sam doesn’t. In the podcast, he explains how his background in music actually helped shape his path in golf: Music taught him about feel and rhythm—two things that matter immensely in putting. Performing and creating taught him to experiment, to break out of conventional lanes. The constant pursuit of “better” in music mirrored the endless chase for improvement in golf. That same creative mindset led Sam to start asking questions most golfers never do: Why do so many of us struggle with putting, even when our strokes look pretty good? Why does the putter face seem to fight us—opening and closing when we don’t want it to? Those questions would eventually lead to LAB Golf—and to a completely different way of thinking about putter design. What Is Lie Angle Balance? At the heart of LAB Golf is a simple but powerful idea: lie angle balance. Sam breaks it down this way on the show: Most putters want to twist during the stroke. That twist comes from torque—the club’s natural tendency to open or close the face as you move it. Your hands and wrists are constantly having to fight that twist, even if you don’t feel it. That’s one major reason putting can feel so inconsistent. LAB Golf putters are designed to be lie angle balanced, which means: When you swing the putter, the face doesn’t want to rotate open or closed. The putter is balanced around the exact lie angle it’s built to be played at. Instead of you having to manipulate the face, the putter wants to stay square to your target line. The idea is to let golfers free up their stroke—remove excess hand action, reduce compensation, and make it easier to start the ball on line, over and over again. Sam also talks about the engineering that goes into this: Carefully distributed weights Unique head shapes Custom fitting to get the right lie angle for your stroke The result is a putter that doesn’t just feel different—it behaves differently. LAB Golf on the PGA Tour: Proof at the Highest Level Of course, it’s one thing to talk about technology. It’s another thing to see it succeed where the pressure is highest. On the podcast, Sam walks Tom through LAB Golf’s evolution on the PGA Tour—from early adopters who were willing to try something that looked a little different, to multiple wins and leaderboards stacked with LAB putters. Tour players are constantly searching for any edge they can find, especially with the flatstick. The fact that more and more pros are putting LAB putters in play—and winning with them—has only accelerated the brand’s momentum. Those victories aren’t just marketing points; they’re validation that the concept of lie angle balance works at the very highest level of the game. Try LAB for Yourself at Worldwide Golf Hearing Sam’s story—from childhood rounds with his dad, to stepping away from the game, to returning and reshaping how we think about putting—makes one thing very clear: LAB Golf isn’t just another putter brand. It’s the product of curiosity, creativity, and a refusal to accept “that’s just how it is” on the greens.
