In 2012, California Fair and Inclusive Education Act required the state’s schools to incorporate LGBTQ+ history and related topics into grades 2, 4, 5, 8, and 11. The textbooks for this curriculum were only recently published and many of the state’s school districts have yet to train teachers on how to implement this curriculum. Ted Olson and David Boise lead the legal fight to defeat Proposition 8, passed by voters in 2008, that limited marriage to one man and one woman. 2024 marks the 15th anniversary of the signing of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. This is the law that expanded federal hate crimes law to include sexual orientation and gender identity. It is also the last year of the annual Matthew Shepard Foundation gala.
