Why Teen Resistance to Recovery is an Invitation to Intimacy
2026/10/01
When a young person is hesitant, resistant, or completely uninterested in outgrowing porn, parental responses often lead to power struggles. This conversation flips that script. Rather than viewing resistance as rebellion or a moral failure, we explore how to reframe it as courageous honesty and an invitation to build real trust. Learn why connection must always come first, how to uncover the underlying emotional needs porn is attempting to solve, and how parents can create a safe space for open dialogue.
What we cover in this episode:
Replacing Control with Curiosity: Why ultimatums and threat-based discipline backfire, and how compassionate, open-ended questions can help.Reframing Resistance: Seeing a teen's reluctance to join a group or read a book as an act of honesty that signals safety rather than defiance.Uncovering the Root Cause: Identifying whether porn is meeting underlying needs like anxiety relief, loneliness, boredom, or unaddressed questions about sex.The Sexual Development Model: Moving away from rigid pass/fail purity culture mindsets toward a realistic understanding that we are all sexually broken and constantly becoming more sexually mature.Parental Self-Reflection: Why parents must process their own shock, fear, or past sexual stories before approaching their teens so conversations remain grounded and compassionate.Building Connection: Why spending quality time together and filling emotional tanks through shared experiences reduce the pull toward pornography far better than lectures.Resources mentioned in this episode:

The Teen Brain in Porn Recovery: Why Neurobiology Changes Everything
2026/09/17
Teens aren't sexually struggling due to a lack of willpower or moral character. The four-part model of the brain (Bottom, Top, Left, and Right) explains why: the heavily developed "bottom brain" (survival and safety) and "right brain" (emotions and non-verbal cues) are constantly seeking soothing in a hypersexualized world, while the "top brain" (logical decision-making) isn't fully developed until age 25 or 26.
"The largest, most powerful sexual organ in your body is not below your belt; it is between your ears." —Drew Boa
What we cover in this episode:
The 4-Part Brain Model:Bottom Brain (Safety & Survival): Governs fight, flight, freeze, and fawn responses. How porn becomes an artificial refuge.Right Brain (Emotion & Creativity): Scans for non-verbal cues and connection, but can also fuel sexual fantasy and escape.Left Brain (Logic & Rules): Holds rational knowledge of right and wrong, but cannot single-handedly regulate intense emotions.Top Brain (Decision-Making): The prefrontal cortex—which is under construction well into a person's mid-twenties.Why Logic & Willpower Aren't Enough: Why focusing solely on rules ("Left Brain") and decision-making ("Top Brain") drives teenagers deeper into shame when they stumble.Supernormal Stimuli & Tolerance: Understanding how exaggerated digital stimuli flood dopamine sensors, leading to desensitization and escalation.Bottom-Up Recovery: How shifting focus toward relational safety, emotional attunement, and identity integration allows the brain to heal and rewire.Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset: Practical steps for building an environment of curiosity and safety over condemnation.Resources mentioned in this episode:

Feel It To Heal It: Why Boys Turn to Porn and How to Process Sexualized Emotions
2026/09/03
Why do uncomfortable emotions like fear, anxiety, anger, or deep loneliness so easily morph into sudden sexual urges?
Let's deconstruct the toxic myth that "men don't have feelings" and reveal the link between unprocessed emotions and pornography use. When boys and men lack the tools or safe spaces to process uncomfortable feelings, the brain often defaults to sexualization—using porn or masturbation as a quick "dopamine lever" to balance out discomfort and numb pain.
Join us to learn the definition of alexithymia, witness a live "feelings & needs check-in" using feeling wheel pillows, and get practical, creative tools to identify, welcome, and regulate your emotions without shame.
"Beneath every behavior is a feeling. Beneath every feeling is a need. When we meet the need, rather than focus on the behavior, we are dealing with the cause, not the symptom." —Ashleigh WernerWhat we cover in this episode:
The Dopamine Lever: How the brain learns to use pornography and masturbation as a quick-relief comfort mechanism for uncomfortable feelings.Sexualizing Emotions: How feelings of fear, humiliation, or deep male loneliness convert into sexual urges when there's no safe outlet to process them.Name It to Tame It / Feel It to Heal It: Why giving language to your inner world is the foundational building block of outgrowing porn.Live Emotional Check-In: A real-time demonstration using parts language ("Part of me feels...") and feeling wheels to trace surface-level reactions down to root feelings and deeper needs.Creative Processing Tools: Practical techniques for when you feel emotionally stuck—assigning colors or animals to feelings, art therapy, and asking "If this feeling could talk, what would it say?"Hospitality Over Hostility: Creating space at the "table" of your soul for every emotion, and realizing that God created us with emotions and longs to be in them with us.Resources mentioned in this episode:

What Every Boy Needs From His Mom: Support Without Shame, Pressure, or Enmeshment
2026/08/20
What does a teenage boy truly need from his mother when navigating sexuality, pornography, and recovery?
Mothers play a vital role in their sons' emotional, spiritual, and sexual development. Especially when many teens in recovery lack an engaged father figure, a safe and validating mother can change everything. Learn how moms can offer nurturing connection without falling into common traps like shame, purity culture lectures, or emotional enmeshment.
"When in doubt, normalize and validate the heck out of it." —Craig Cashwell
What we cover in this episode:
The Power of an Attuned Parent: Why having even one emotionally safe, safe parent can alter the trajectory of a teen’s recovery journey.Betrayal Transference: Differentiating between a teenager’s normal, God-given curiosity and adult marital betrayal—and why treating a son like a husband (transference) causes deep harm.Understanding Enmeshment: Recognizing when a parent-child relationship serves the parent’s emotional needs rather than the child’s, and how to set healthy boundaries.Practical Scripts for Moms: Compassionate, non-judgmental responses to help open lines of communication ("Tell me more," "Thank you for telling me," "I'm right here with you").Encouragement for Teen Boys: Realizing you aren't responsible for carrying your parents' emotions and learning to release burdens.Resources mentioned in this episode:

What Every Boy Needs From His Dad: Unconditional Affirmation, Quantity Time, Shame-Free Sexual Guidance, and More
2026/08/06
What do boys crave from fathers and male role models? Whether you are a dad looking to build a safer relationship with your son, a teenager navigating these struggles right now, or an adult who grew up "under-fathered," this episode offers a recipe for creating emotional connection and safety to talk about sexual topics.
Father-son relationships have a profound impact on sexual recovery because emotional disconnection, conditional praise, and neglect (the "carbon monoxide of childhood trauma") create a sense of emptiness that pornography promises to fill.
What we cover in this episode:
Conditional vs. Unconditional Praise: Why boys desperately need validation for who they are, not just what they achieve (and how to praise the process over the results).Flipping the Script on "The Sex Talk": Why a single, painful 100-minute lecture doesn't work, and how to implement 100 one-minute conversations driven by curiosity and zero shame.Entering Your Child's World: The impact of quantity time and simply showing up for the things your kids love—even if it's a video game you're terrible at.Emotional Literacy as a Shield: How naming and processing emotions prevents them from becoming sexualized, featuring practical tools like The Feelings Game.Hope for the Under-Fathered: How to experience "re-fathering" and "re-parenting" through God, community, and safe men.Resources Mentioned in this episode:

Sharing our Sexual Stories of Shame, Healing, and Freedom
2026/07/26
The best way to help a young man feel safe enough to share his sexual story is to appropriately share your sexual story first. That's why in this episode, we put our core value of "leaders going first" into practice. Through radical vulnerability, we hope to prove that no sexual secret is too dark to disqualify anyone from community, grace, and love.
Our Stories
Drew’s Story: Drew opens up about moving from Toronto to Texas at age 13. Facing intense loneliness and isolation, he fell into a cycle of using pornography and developed a specific, shame-filled fetish focused on braces. True transformation began when he joined a support group at age 18, allowing him to finally be known and loved. This journey has now led him into over 10 years of freedom.Blake’s Story: Blake describes growing up in an unstable home environment riddled with unpredictable anxiety and fear. This volatile climate led him to internalize the destructive belief that he was fundamentally unlovable. After first encountering hardcore pornography on a school bus at age 15 or 16, he relied on it for years to numb his emotional dread until finding deep recovery through vulnerable, grace-filled brotherhood.Doug’s Story: Doug shares a complex history involving childhood sexual abuse starting before the age of five. He outlines navigating pervasive exposure to pornography as a youth alongside deep feelings of worthlessness stemming from being emotionally ignored by his father. After a powerful moment of reconciliation with his father at age 21, Doug dedicated his life to breaking the generational cycle of silence by fostering open, loving communication about sexuality with his own children.Key Takeaways
Vulnerability Kills Shame: True recovery requires stepping out of isolation and finding safe people, because we can only be as fully loved as we are fully honest. The Devil is in the Details: The specific fixations or unique patterns in pornography usage are never random; they are emotional hooks deeply tied to unaddressed pain and personal narratives.A Call to Action for Parents: Parents, we strongly encourage you to break the silence around sex, share your stories at age-appropriate levels, and own your emotional impact on your children.Click here to send us a voicemail.
