Description

Bipolar Clarity is a calm, practical guide to living with bipolar disorder — made for people who are newly diagnosed, and for the first years after a bipolar diagnosis, when everything feels loud and nobody hands you a manual. Each short episode (15–20 minutes) takes one real situation and gives you language, steps, and questions you can actually use: understanding bipolar 1 and bipolar 2, telling hypomania from mania, recognizing early warning signs, bipolar depression and mixed episodes, sleep and routine, preparing medication conversations with your prescriber, work, relationships, and how to talk to the people who love you. The words come from lived experience: every episode is written by René, who has lived with bipolar disorder for more than 20 years — through decades of misdiagnosis, a late diagnosis, and the slow, unglamorous work of becoming stable. Clara, the presenter, is an AI host; the face is synthetic, the story is real. No hype and no miracle cures. Bipolar disorder is managed, not cured — and a good life is genuinely possible. This podcast is education, not therapy or medical advice; please work with your own clinicians. New episodes weekly. Every episode also exists as a video with subtitles in nine languages at bipolarclarity.com, along with free printable tools and a calm weekly newsletter. If you or someone you love was just diagnosed with bipolar disorder, start with the episode "New Diagnosis? Start Here: 3 Steps to Stabilize Your Mood." You’re in the right place.

Carrie Fisher and Bipolar Disorder: 5 Lessons From Her
2026/10/23
She called her two moods Roy and Pam. Carrie Fisher lived with bipolar disorder in public, long before it was common to say it out loud, and her story teaches five things most textbook explanations leave out. In this video: • Why a diagnosis can take years, especially when substances blur the picture • How naming your moods helps you see a pattern early • What happens when treatment slips, and why changes go through your prescriber • Community and humor as tools, not distractions • What research says about celebrity disclosure, and its limits This is an educational story, not medical advice. If you may be in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services. Hypomania Signs Others Often Notice Before You Do
2026/10/21
Hypomania can feel like a very good week from the inside. Mania versus hypomania, and what others notice first. Lesson 8 of 24 in the Bipolar Stability Program: an Elevated-State Inventory, up to six changes in your own words. 📄 Free PDF for this lesson, Elevated-State Inventory. Print it and write on it: https://bipolarclarity.com/get/bsp-l08-elevated-inventory-en.pdf 📘 Complete workbook, all 24 lessons in one PDF. From outside: less sleep, faster talk, a full outbox, yes to everything. Neither view is the whole truth; the gap between them is the useful part. This lesson covers six areas (sleep and energy, pace, plans, messages, risk and judgment, and what it cost), explains why mania and hypomania differ by severity and impact, not energy alone, and shows how to ask someone what they noticed without asking them to diagnose you. It is not a diagnostic test. Rising energy doesn't protect against despair. If activation comes with hopelessness or thoughts of suicide, contact a professional promptly, and get urgent help if safety is at risk. ☎️ Need help now? Bipolar 1 vs Bipolar 2: What the Number Really Means
2026/10/19
Bipolar 1 versus bipolar 2: the number isn't a severity score. It tells you which episodes are in your history. Lesson 7 of 24 in the Bipolar Stability Program: mixed features and rapid cycling in plain words, plus a Diagnostic Language Map. 📄 Free PDF for this lesson, My Diagnostic Language Map. Print it and write on it: https://bipolarclarity.com/get/bsp-l07-language-map-en.pdf 📘 Complete workbook, all 24 lessons in one PDF. It isn't, and bipolar 2 is not a milder bipolar 1. This lesson starts where clinicians start, with episode history, then explains mania and hypomania, mixed features, rapid cycling, and why two records can word the same history differently. It also tells why René's record said depression for about 25 years. A label doesn't measure how hard your life is. Questions about treatment belong with the person who knows your history. ☎️ Need help now? In the United States or Canada, call or text 988. Bipolar Life Chart: How to Map Your Mood History
2026/10/16
A bipolar life chart maps your mood history across years: three periods, six questions, no exact dates needed. Your diagnosis depends on the route between hundreds of them. This lesson helps you choose three broad periods, look at each through six lenses (mood and energy, sleep, functioning, care, health and substances, life context), and mark what you know, what's possible and what's uncertain. A pattern on the page is a good question. It is not proof of a cause. It also covers old records, what people close to you remember, and when to pause. ☎️ Need help now? What Is My Bipolar Medication Actually For?
2026/10/14
Not sure what your bipolar medication is actually for? The questions to bring to your prescriber, on one page. Lesson 5 of 24 in the Bipolar Stability Program: a Medication Questions Page. It never tells you what to take. 📄 Free PDF for this lesson, Medication Questions Page. This lesson builds a five-part page so it doesn't: the exact name from your label, its purpose in your own words, what seems to help, what concerns you, and what needs checking. It explains what the category names on a label mean and don't mean, why monitoring is part of treatment, and why only your prescriber can say what a medicine is doing for you. Bipolar Early Warning Signs: Pick 4 That Are Yours
2026/10/12
Bipolar early warning signs aren't a checklist. Pick four that are yours, and one small first move. Lesson 4 of 24 in the Bipolar Stability Program: a Starter Early-Change Card with two possible changes up and two down. 📄 Free PDF for this lesson, Starter Early-Change Card. Messages getting faster. A shower that's suddenly hard. None of these proves an episode is starting, and all of them are early enough to be useful. This lesson helps you choose four changes that are different for you, describe them so someone else could see them too, and pick one small, reversible first move. Waiting for a textbook pattern can cost weeks; treating every change as relapse costs your peace of mind. It also covers when the first move is urgent help. ☎️ Need help now? Bipolar Sleep: 3 Short Nights That Mean Different Things
2026/10/09

What Is Bipolar Disorder? (And What It Isn't)
2026/10/07
Bipolar disorder explained calmly: a pattern over time, not mood swings, a bad week, or a flaw in who you are. Lesson 2 of 24 in the Bipolar Stability Program: a card for what the diagnosis means, what it doesn't, and what's unclear. 📄 Free PDF for this lesson, Meaning / Not-meaning + Diagnostic Wording Card. This lesson explains why one feeling, one short night or one productive day can't establish anything: bipolar disorder is read across time, by how many things change together, for how long, and with what impact. It covers why what set an episode off isn't what caused the condition, what your baseline is, what a professional assessment adds that self-recognition can't, and why the diagnosis describes a condition, not who you are. ☎️ Need help now? Newly Diagnosed With Bipolar? Write This Page First
2026/10/05
Just diagnosed with bipolar disorder and don't know where to start? Start with one page. Lesson 1 of the Bipolar Stability Program: the three routes to write down before you need them, and how to use the twenty-four lessons that follow. The first weeks after a diagnosis are not the time to reorganise your life. They're the time to make one thing easier: knowing what to do when it gets hard. This lesson helps you write a single page — where you go for everyday questions, where you go when something can't wait, and where you go in an emergency — plus one personal contact if that helps you. It takes about ten minutes, and there's a two-minute version if ten is too many today. It also explains what this program is, what the workbook is and isn't, and how to take the twenty-four lessons at whatever pace you actually have. ⚠️ This Program does not recommend a medicine, compare doses, select a treatment, or tell you to start, stop, restart, taper, change or combine anything. If you're considering a change, contact the professional who knows your situation before you act — and if it's urgent, use an urgent route. ☎️ Need support now? Bipolar Brain Scans: What They Show—and What They Can’t
2026/10/02
Bipolar brain scans: what they really show, and the one thing they can't do. A normal scan doesn't mean your illness isn't real. What researchers see across thousands of brains, and one small, practical step you can take this week. No brain scan can diagnose bipolar disorder in you personally, and that's exactly why a "normal" result proves nothing. But when researchers compare large groups, real, consistent physical differences do show up on average: the illness leaves fingerprints across a crowd, not on a single snapshot. This video explains what those studies look at, and the picture neuroscientists keep coming back to: an emotional accelerator that runs hot, and front-of-brain brakes working against a heavier load. Then why "chemical imbalance" is an outdated story, what the kindling idea means, and why it's a strong reason to treat early and steadily. The payoff: this was never a character flaw. It also explains why medication, sleep and rhythm, therapy and outside routines are built the way they are. You'll leave with one external brake to install this week and a better question to ask in moments of self-blame. ▸ In this video: • Why no scan can diagnose bipolar, and why a normal scan proves nothing • What group brain-imaging studies actually find • The accelerator-and-brakes model • Beyond the "chemical imbalance" myth • The kindling idea and why early treatment matters • One external brake to install this week ☎️ Need support now? Bipolar Partner Won’t Get Help? How to Talk Without a Fight
2026/09/30
Bipolar partner won't get help? Why reasons bounce off in a high phase, and what can still reach them. Calm, practical, no scare stories. ☎️ If you or they may be in danger right now, don't wait for the video: in the US and Canada, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). Outside the US: https://findahelpline.com · More countries: bipolarclarity.com/gethelp. If there's any risk of harm, or they've lost contact with reality, call your local emergency number. When someone you love is in a manic or hypomanic phase and refuses help, the most loving argument can make things worse. That isn't because you're saying it wrong: the part of the mind that weighs evidence about oneself is often the first thing an episode switches off. This video explains that "empty courtroom" and gives you four moves that tend to land instead: drop the label and name what you've seen, use sleep as the door, keep it short and lean on what you agreed on a calm day, and let someone else say it when it can't be you. You'll also get how to build a simple plan together on a good week, how to pick the moment, and where gentle talking stops and urgent professional help starts. Talking well opens a door to treatment; it doesn't replace it. ▸ In this video: • Why a manic or hypomanic partner can't hear your reasons • The label sentence vs. the concern sentence • Using sleep as the way in • The calm-day agreement: early signs and one small step • When someone else should say it • Where talking stops and emergency help starts ➡️ If this is your life right now, our free Sunday email is written for exactly these weeks — calm, short, practical, for people loving someone through bipolar: https://bipolarclarity.com/newsletter/ 🔔 Subscribe so the next one finds you. 🎙️ About Clara & this channel Clara is the AI-presented host of Bipolar Clarity. Bipolar vs ADHD: The Sleep Clue That Helps Tell Them Apart
2026/09/28
Bipolar vs ADHD: they can look identical from the outside, but the engines are different — and sleep is the clearest clue. Six lenses to tell them apart, a two-week log that takes under two minutes a day, and what to say to your doctor. Racing thoughts, wrecked sleep, impulsive decisions you regret later: bipolar disorder and ADHD share a lot, and they often come together. But they need different treatment, so telling them apart matters. This video gives you six lenses: a constant baseline versus episodes, moods that react to events versus moods that run on their own, tired versus wired after a short night (the strongest single signal), wandering versus racing distraction, a scattered fidget versus goal-locked agitation, and when it all started. Then what it can look like when you have both, and why mood comes first before focus is treated. You'll leave with a simple two-week pattern log (sleep, mood, focus, and the day's big event), a line to take to your appointment, and three kinds of outside scaffolding that help whatever the label turns out to be. This is a map to bring to a professional, not a diagnosis. ▸ In this video: • Why bipolar and ADHD are so easy to confuse • Baseline vs. episode: a constant hum or changing weather • Reactive vs. autonomous mood • Tired vs. wired: the sleep clue that separates them • Wandering vs. racing distraction, and the physical motor • When it started: childhood signs vs. young-adult onset • When it's both, and why mood is treated first • A two-week pattern log and what to tell your doctor ☎️ Need support now? Manic Spending Feels Brilliant—Until You Check the Bank
2026/09/25
How mania empties a bank account — and why it isn't a spending problem at all, but a risk problem you can plan for. The two-key rule you set up while you're well, so a clear version of you protects the version that temporarily won't be. You felt clear. Sharper than you'd been in months. An opportunity appears, you move fast and sure — and weeks later the fog lifts, you open your banking app, and your stomach drops. If mania has ever emptied your account, this video has two things for you. First: it did not happen because you're stupid, weak, or "bad with money." Manic spending is really a risk problem — researchers call it hyperpositive thinking, where the brain turns the volume up on every reward and down on every risk, so the internal calculator you'd use to ask "is this a good idea?" gets rewired, and it feels like clarity. Second: one rule, set up in advance, can stop it — the two-key rule. Pick one trusted person, add friction to big money moves, and use the 48-hour waiting rule (because in mania, the deal that can't wait is exactly the one that most needs to). It's a seatbelt, not a surrender. ▸ In this video: • Why manic spending is a risk problem, not a spending problem • "Hyperpositive thinking": why bad decisions feel like clarity • The tell that separates a normal splurge from manic spending • Why money is uniquely dangerous: fast and permanent • The two-key rule — a trusted person plus built-in delay • The 48-hour waiting rule (urgency itself is a symptom) • The reframe: a seatbelt for future-you, not a surrender ☎️ Need support now? Best Jobs for Bipolar Disorder? Use This 3-Part Test
2026/09/23
Bipolar-friendly jobs aren't about finding "low-stress" work — they're about fit, flex, and stability designed around your brain. A job audit to score the role you're in, plus three Trojan-horse questions to spot a toxic workplace in an interview — without revealing your diagnosis. Everyone says "just find a low-stress job," but nobody says what that means. This video swaps career luck for career design, built around what we call the bipolar-friendly triangle. Fit: does the job match your biology — your chronotype (lark or owl) and your need for high or low stimulation? Flex: can the job bend without breaking — time, location, and workload flex for the weeks you're at sixty percent? Stability: a steady paycheck, yes, but mostly a boringly reliable emotional climate with no drama. You'll get a job audit to score your current role one to ten on each corner (and why to tweak one corner before you quit the whole thing), three Trojan-horse interview questions that quietly reveal a toxic culture, the health-sabbatical script for a resume gap, a fire-drill plan for when an episode hits at work, and the case for the underrated "boring dividend" job. ▸ In this video: • The bipolar-friendly triangle: Fit, Flex, Stability • Chronobiological fit — matching work to your sleep-wake window • The three kinds of Flex to look for • A job audit to score your current role (and tweak before you quit) • Three Trojan-horse questions to spot a toxic workplace • The health-sabbatical script for a resume gap • The "boring dividend": the most underrated career move ☎️ Need support now? Should Your Partner Take Control During a Bipolar Episode?
2026/09/21
Letting your partner take control during a bipolar episode — can it actually work, or does it just wreck the relationship? It works only one way: agreed in advance, while you're well. Here's how to build that agreement together, step by step. Your partner reaches for the car keys, the credit card, or the phone to call your doctor — and every cell in your body revolts. From the inside it can feel like control, or even betrayal. So can handing over the wheel during an episode really work? Yes — but almost everyone tries the version that fails: control seized in the moment, when your insight is low and your certainty is sky-high, so help lands as an attack. The version that works is control agreed in advance, while you were clear. Clinicians call it a treatment contract or relapse-prevention plan, and it flips the meaning of the moment: your partner isn't overpowering you, they're keeping a promise you made. This video walks the pieces — decide together on a calm week, keep it specific and limited, define the on-switch and off-switch, and sort out practical access (release-of-information, medical power of attorney) before you need it. Plus the boundary that keeps this mutual, never domination. ▸ In this video: • Why control seized in the moment almost always backfires • "Past-me, who loves me, asked them to do this" — the reframe • Keep it specific and limited: one clear job, one clear end • The on-switch and off-switch you both agree on • Sort out access (release forms, power of attorney) in advance • The boundary: mutual and agreed, never domination ☎️ Need support now?
