Description

A business rises to the level of its marketing — temporarily — and falls to the level of its leadership, permanently. Chris Cooper spent a decade mentoring thousands of entrepreneurs, leading teams across multiple businesses, and building partnerships with major sponsors — and found the same pattern every time. It was never knowledge, work ethic, or tactics that separated the leaders who succeeded from the ones who didn't. It was leadership itself. Realms of Leadership breaks that big, fuzzy idea into four parts: leading yourself, leading your team, leading your peers, and leading your tribe. Each week — or whenever there's something worth saying — Chris shares the hard-won lessons from his own mistakes, plus conversations with people who've actually demonstrated real skill in one of these four realms. No theory. No recycled opinions. Just tactical tools you can put into practice immediately. Start your own self-leadership practice for free at realmsofleadership.com.

Giving Your Team a Roadmap
2026/10/02
Roadmap Meetings: Align a Diverse Team with Mission + the GAP Framework In this episode of Realms of Leadership, I explain why raise conversations are really about matching what people want at different times, illustrated by a key team member who traded salary for equity and later asked to switch back for a mortgage, and another teammate who preferred paid time off over more money. I share a two-part roadmap system for getting a diverse team moving in the same direction: first, establish and repeatedly communicate a clear, achievable, aspirational mission that every staff member can explain in their own words; then hold individual roadmap meetings that connect each person’s role to that mission using my GAP framework—Grounded in reality (agree on current performance, often with a score-based evaluation), Agency (identify what they control and how they matter), and Path forward (specific 30/60/90-day next steps aligned with their personal motivations). 00:00 Raise Requests Are Math 00:23 Equity Versus Salary 01:21 Different Wants Over Time 01:54 Roadmap Meetings Overview 02:14 Mission Before One on Ones 02:39 Four Mission Requirements 03:48 Repeat the Mission Often 04:25 Roadmap Meeting Purpose 05:05 GAP Framework Intro 05:24 Grounded in Reality 06:38 Build Agency and Ownership 07:33 Define the Path Forward 08:54 System Recap and Wrap Up
Integrity-First Leadership, with Monique Rollin
2026/10/02
Monique Rollin on Credibility, Command, and Real Leadership I sit down with Monique Rollin, a 32-year policing veteran and the first woman to reach command staff as an inspector in the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, to break down how to lead when rank and formal authority aren’t available. We talk about barriers women face in paramilitary culture, the myth of meritocracy, and how biased systems can reward the wrong competencies. Monique shares practical tactics for earning trust through integrity, representing the “voice at the bottom,” and building buy-in through consultation—especially before rolling out change. We also explore critical incident command across agencies with no chain of command, using mission statements, clear roles, and teachable moments to reduce confusion in chaos. Finally, she explains how she now trains and designs defensible promotion processes and custom training for small-to-medium police services. 00:00 Leadership Without Rank 01:49 Breaking Barriers in Policing 04:57 Myth of Meritocracy 09:35 When Friends Get Hired 11:25 Integrity Over Approval 14:13 Consultation Builds Buy In 17:24 Change Management Lessons 21:14 Commanding Without Authority 21:49 Plan Before Action 23:19 Rules Build Trust 24:30 Mission Creates Ownership 24:59 Teach The Why 28:08 Delegating Prevention Work 32:45 Say Yes And Learn 36:07 Pivoting To Find Niche 40:35 Training Host Model 42:54 Mentorship And Contact
Sending Your Future Self a Gift (The Best Trick for Self-Leadership)
2026/10/02
In this episode, I share why I reached out to support a local entrepreneur who was being roasted online for raising prices, and how helping him was also a gift to my future self by building connection and friendship. In this Realms of Leadership episode, I explain the core leadership challenge of choosing long-term benefit over short-term gratification, and introduce psychologist Hal Hershfield’s idea of future self-continuity—feeling connected to who you’ll be in the future. I break down practical ways to “send gifts” forward through long-term investing, sleep, exercise, meditation, and a daily golden hour habit, and I highlight how helping strangers and clients with a help-first mindset can create future opportunities. I argue that the best gift is love: treating future you like someone worth caring for today. 00:00 Entrepreneur Gets Roasted 00:51 Helping Future You 01:39 Long Term Leadership 02:21 Future Self Continuity 02:53 Gifts That Compound 04:49 Discipline For Others 05:32 Love Your Future Self 06:25 Opening Old Gifts 07:00 Send The Package
Leading Your Peers: From Systems to Ecosystems
2026/09/20
In this episode of Realms of Leadership, I explain why team leaders build systems while peer leaders build ecosystems—networks held together by influence, trust, and shared purpose rather than titles or compliance. I break down how peer leadership enables scaling through collaboration, partnerships, and cross-referrals, and why leadership in real peer groups rotates based on the situation. Using examples like my Sunday cycling group, Fight Club, Rotary, Alcoholics Anonymous, and churches, I show how healthy ecosystems grow because every member takes responsibility for making the group better and bigger. I also address imposter syndrome in new peer groups and argue the fastest path to belonging is shifting from “Will I be accepted?” to “How can I help?” Finally, I warn that scarcity and territorial thinking shrink ecosystems, and I invite you to contribute actively starting day one. 00:00 Systems vs Ecosystems 00:21 What Peer Leadership Is 01:18 Scaling Through Partnerships 02:02 Cycling Group Case Study 03:15 Shared Responsibility to Grow 04:37 Start or Join a Group 04:59 Imposter Syndrome to Service 06:12 Scarcity Mindset Warning 06:33 CrossFit Territory Lesson 07:34 Choose to Lead Among Peers 08:26 Closing and Next Steps
Brendan Rice, CEO of Wodify
2026/09/20
How Brendan Rice Took Over Wodify After the Founder—and Built a Values-Driven Leadership Culture Today I’m interviewing Brendan Rice, CEO of Wodify, about leading a founder-led company through succession, culture shifts, and scalable growth. Brendan shares how he joined Wodify without a defined role, grew from marketing operations into CMO and then CEO, and why autonomy from founder Ameet Shah helped him lead authentically. We discuss redefining Wodify’s culture by simplifying core values, embedding them into hiring, performance management, and daily recognition, and making values actionable through initiatives like “Be Customer Obsessed” and his “Drop-In Diaries” gym visits. Brendan explains CEO challenges like decision-making without a backstop and constant context switching, plus how Wodify built an organized operating system, stayed close to product through regular releases and internal demos, recruited top talent with rigorous onboarding, and built partnerships by focusing on shared problems rather than transactions. 00:00 Meet Wodify’s CEO 01:27 From Startup Hire to CEO 05:41 Defining Culture and Values 08:54 Customer Obsessed in Action 11:21 Reinforcing Values Daily 13:53 Taking Over From the Founder 20:54 Building a Mature Operating System 23:55 Staying Close to Product 29:43 Hiring and Leading Diverse Talent 35:43 Partnerships That Last 39:02 Time Management and Balance 41:57 Closing Thoughts
Bonnie Skinner on Building Mental Fitness
2026/09/15
In this episode, I talk with registered psychotherapist and executive coach Bonnie Skinner, founder of Level Up Mental Fitness, about shifting from therapy to action-oriented mental fitness coaching for CEOs and leaders. Bonnie explains why many entrepreneurs struggle with traditional therapy’s pace and how coaching delivers more direct, tactical strategies. We break down key elements of mental fitness—focus, resilience, and cognitive endurance—covering why attention is harder to sustain today, how emotion drives focus, and practical ways to reduce distractions and set up an environment that supports deep work. Bonnie defines resilience as recovery over time, explains how rumination extends emotional spikes, and shares grounding tactics like time alone, light movement, and self-inquiry to prevent overreactions and decision blind spots. We also discuss managing energy (not time), mapping natural rhythms, and Bonnie’s CEO Strong and Level Up Mastery programs. 00:00 Meet Bonnie Skinner 01:14 From Therapy to Coaching 04:03 Coaching vs Therapy Explained 05:16 Focus and Attention Myths 06:06 Emotion Fuels Focus 09:26 Train Focus with Environment 12:33 Resilience as Recovery 15:40 Stop the Rumination Loop 21:42 Grounding and State Control 24:36 Cognitive Endurance and Rhythms 27:40 Manage Energy Not Time 30:31 Map Your Energy Patterns 33:59 CEO Strong Program Overview 37:17 Where to Find Bonnie 37:27 Final Thanks and Wrap
Peter Brasovan on Values-Based Leadership
2026/09/13
In this episode, I talk with Peter Brasovan, an entrepreneur and values-based leadership expert who started his first gym in 2011, learned hard lessons about unclear expectations, and later shifted to a values-first approach to hiring, accountability, and even firing. Peter explains a practical process for creating company values (keep/kill/combine), defining behaviors on both ends of each value, and reinforcing them through repetition and “values challenges” with staff and clients. He also shares tactics for leading peers from his time as lead mentor at Two Brain Business, including mastering the material, leveraging “Who Not How” by elevating others’ strengths, and connecting people through shared interests and clear common ground. Peter closes by describing his current work at Perfect Day Living helping service-based entrepreneurs improve systems, money, and time. 00:00 Meet Peter Brasovan 01:02 Early Leadership Roots 03:38 Gym Team Growth 04:42 Values First Pivot 06:16 Build Values That Work 08:41 Rollout and Accountability 13:24 Leading Peers at Two Brain 14:43 Earn Trust as Lead Mentor 18:14 Find Your Whos 21:33 Connectors and Mentorship 26:19 Authenticity in AI Age 30:29 Open the Door Networking 32:59 Perfect Day Living Project 34:23 Wrap Up and Where to Find Him
Mental Fitness for Leaders: Beyond Mindfulness, Therapy, and “Wellness”
2026/09/10
In this episode of Realms of Leadership, I challenge the idea that mental health is simply the absence of illness or the management of symptoms, and I introduce a spectrum from mental illness through wellness to true mental fitness—“super-wellness” that builds a buffer against stress, anxiety, distraction, and overwhelm. Using the evolution of physical training as a parallel, I explain why most mental health tools were designed to move people from dysfunction to function, and why leaders also need deliberate training to go beyond baseline. I lay out eight measurable, trainable dimensions of mental fitness—focus, resilience, cognitive endurance, adaptability, patience, clarity, self-awareness, and emotional regulation—and describe how each can be developed by design. I also point to a free mental fitness assessment and daily journaling practice at realmsofleadership.com. 00:00 Mindfulness Isn’t Enough 00:53 Mental Health Spectrum 02:14 How Fitness Culture Evolved 04:12 Mind’s 70-Year Lag 06:22 Why Leaders Need Fitness 07:34 Defining Mental Fitness 08:01 Eight Fitness Dimensions 12:00 Training the Dimensions 13:37 From Wellness to Fitness 14:54 Assessment and Next Steps
Andrea Savard on Team Leadership
2026/09/07
Team Leadership Through Crisis with Andrea Savard (Firepower Training) In this episode, I interview Andrea Savard, co-founder of Firepower Training, about building a gym from a 2005 boxing hobby into a large-scale operation and leading a tight team through major disruption, including Metrolinx expropriating their one-acre property, losing leases, and moving locations three times amid COVID lockdowns. Andrea explains how Firepower hires from within to maintain loyalty and retention, and how they set expectations through documented standards, a culture book, and a “perfect session” SOP focused on the felt experience of great coaching. We discuss gaps like inconsistent formal performance evaluations, evaluating both tasks and characteristics, handling a long-simmering staff conflict through direct, clear conversations and empathy, and leading with transparency, vulnerability, and a “non-anxious presence” to keep the community together. 00:00 Meet Andrea Savard 01:11 Starting Firepower in 2005 02:43 Hiring From Within 04:20 When Structure Became Necessary 06:35 Standards and Culture Book 09:32 Measuring Performance and Fit 11:53 The Staff Conflict Turning Point 15:49 Hard Conversations and Firing 17:36 Expropriation and Moving Locations 19:39 My House My Guest Culture 24:43 Non Anxious Leadership Presence 27:25 Realness Over Image Management 30:00 Empathy Without People Pleasing 33:31 Owning Mistakes and Rebuilding Trust 36:30 Closing Thoughts and Thanks
The Dichotomy of Leadership
2026/08/25
5 Leadership Balance Mistakes I Made (and How to Stay in the Middle) In this episode of Realms of Leadership, I explain how my biggest team leadership mistakes all came from losing balance—caring too much about one person or the mission, taking too much ownership or giving away too much control, being resolute but overbearing, acting aggressively but recklessly, and holding accountability with too much hand-holding. I share five examples from my career, including delaying firing an underperformer, quietly taking tasks back from an employee because it was faster, enforcing unwritten rules while keeping a mental scorecard, changing systems without explaining why, and ambushing staff with surprise evaluations. I conclude that the way to find and hold the balance point is to decide standards calmly in advance, write them down, communicate the what/how/why, and apply them consistently so the team can trust predictable leadership. 00:00 Leadership Balance Setup 00:59 Dichotomy Framework 02:10 People Versus Mission 04:23 Ownership Not Micromanage 06:06 Standards Without Anger 07:28 Fast Action Not Chaos 09:05 Accountability Reviews 10:06 Write Standards Ahead 12:23 Predictability Builds Trust 12:47 Closing And Next Steps
The Four Realms of Leadership
2026/08/18
I’m Chris Cooper, and in this first episode of Realms of Leadership I explain why businesses, movements, and missions ultimately stall because of leadership, not markets, capital, or sales process. After mentoring over 3,500 first-time entrepreneurs, I saw leadership as the common denominator between those who succeeded, struggled, or failed. In this episode, I break leadership into four actionable "realms": self-leadership, team leadership, peer leadership, and tribe leadership—and show how strengths or weaknesses in one realm amplify the others. I also argue that today’s distraction culture is a leadership problem and that positive leadership must start with leading yourself toward being healthier, wealthier, and happier. To help you begin immediately, I introduce a practical tool: self-authoring—writing your past, present, and future—and offer a free self-authoring journal at realmsofleadership.com. 00:00 Why Leaders Limit Growth 00:27 Meet Chris Cooper 01:01 Why Leadership Feels Fuzzy 02:14 A Species Built for More 03:55 Start With Self Leadership 04:09 The Four Realms Framework 05:16 How Realms Affect Each Other 07:04 What to Expect From the Show 07:35 Self Authoring Tool 08:17 Closing Call to Work
Nick Castiglia on Self-Leadership, Tribes, and Building Legacy Martial Arts Consulting
2026/08/16
In this episode, I sit down with Nick Castiglia, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu European champion, gym owner, and the founder of Legacy Martial Arts Consulting, who coaches martial arts school owners with a “help first” philosophy. Nick shares how being bullied as a kid led him into martial arts, how teaching and mentorship shaped his path into ownership and coaching, and why self-leadership means staying aligned with what matters while still feeling real human emotions. We talk about daily practices like journaling and training, hard-earned leadership lessons like hiring slow and firing faster, and the importance of curating your circle based on mission, morals, and values. Nick also explains Tribalnomics concepts like overlap and offset in tribes, discusses healthy ways for students to branch out, and outlines his long-term goal of improving safety and standardization in martial arts through stronger regulation. 00:00 Meet Nick Castiglia 01:03 Origins in Martial Arts 02:52 From Competitor to Coach 05:53 Help First Philosophy 07:19 Defining Self Leadership 09:17 Daily Habits and Journaling 13:08 Leadership Missteps and Hiring 26:36 Curating Your Tribe 28:50 Founding Legacy Consulting 29:22 Why He Coaches Schools 35:05 Genuine Care Builds Trust 36:17 Genuine Influence Wins 37:26 Scams Create Filters 38:10 Pride And Being Wrong 39:14 Humility Through Loss 42:19 Legacy And Impact 45:51 Safer Martial Arts Standards 48:01 Tribe Overlap Formula 51:45 When Students Branch Out 54:12 Teaching Tribe Dynamics 55:17 Closing Thanks
