The Gear Episode: What’s Worth It On A Budget
2026/10/21
Triathlon can get expensive fast, so Kate and April sort the gear into three buckets: non-negotiables, worth it once you’re racing regularly, and nice to have but not a need. They cover the helmet, goggles, and running shoes you need from day one. Then the tri kit, wetsuit, clipless pedals, and padded shorts that pay off once you’re racing. Last, the tri bike, power meters, and GPS watches that are fun but optional, plus a cheaper way to track your workouts without buying a watch. Along the way: why you should never buy a helmet used, how to test goggles in open water, and why the fanciest shoe isn’t always the right one. 📲 Follow @girlstalktri on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube 💌 Send us your best or worst gear purchase at [email protected]. We’ll read our favorites on a future episode!
The Race That's Worth Every Mile
2026/10/14
Two years of training, two near-misses at nationals, and one 5 AM email that made April burst into tears. This week, she finally tells us what happened at XTERRA World Championships in Ruidoso, New Mexico. In this episode of Girls Talk Tri, April gives us the full race recap — the stunning bike course, the wild horses at the aid station, the Mescalero Apache tribal blessing before the start, and the run that she can only describe as "wretched". We also talk about what it actually took to get to the start line of a world championship: the failed qualifications, the moment at Sleeping Giant when she thought she hadn’t made it, and why finishing in an Air Force kit with people cheering her name on the course made every single mile worth it. Oh, and she signed up for another race. Because of course she did. (Spoiler: it’s a qualifier for XTERRA Trail World Championships in Malta. Girls Talk Tri is going international)! In this episode: April’s two-year road to qualifying for XTERRA Worlds — and the 5 AM email that changed everythingWhat XTERRA World Championships in Ruidoso actually feels like: the western vibe, the Apache blessing, the belt buckle medalSwim, bike, and run breakdown — including the wild horses, the upside-down hydration pack, and that runThree race goals (she remembers two of them)Kate’s solo hiking saga, mountain lion probability charts, and why the soft girl life is not for herOur first podcast reviews — thank you, Sam and Sunny Girl Tri 🥹Kate’s trail run nutrition disaster and the saying “poop knows when it’s close to home”What’s next: Appalachian Trail Fest on Halloween, XTERRA Malta, XTERRA Austria, a fourteener, and an open water swim in AlaskaAre you off-road curious? BONUS: Open Water Without The Panic
2026/10/10
Open water swimming is either the best part of triathlon — or the reason you haven’t signed up yet. This week, we’re talking about it. In this bonus episode of Girls Talk Tri, April and Kate break down everything you need to know before your first open water swim: what to wear, what to bring, what to do when the washing machine start feels like actual chaos, and — most importantly — what to do if you panic. Spoiler: you’re not the only one. Kate’s first open water swim with goggles nearly ended her triathlon career before it started, and April grew up as what she calls a “sea witch” in Minnesota lakes (which, it turns out, is not the same as swimming in a race with 300 of your closest strangers). We’re sharing the tips we wish someone had handed us on the pool deck, and taking some hot takes on the sport’s most debated open water questions. In this episode: Wetsuit 101 — when to wear one, which kind, and the calf cramp nobody warns you aboutGoggles, caps, and why you should always pack a backup pairThe washing machine start: what it actually feels like and how to survive itSighting — how to swim in a straight line when there’s no black line to followWhat to do if you panic in the water (this one is important)April’s Ruidoso race recon that turned into a 7-hour unexpected adventureOur current reads and listens: Dungeon Crawler Carl and National Park After DarkHot takes: Is skipping open water practice okay? Are wetsuits cheating? Should you always start at the back?Find us on Instagram @girlstalktri and send your open water questions, horror stories, and wins to [email protected]. Say Yes To The Race That Scares You
2026/10/07
April got a call. There was a spot on the Department of the Air Force triathlon team for a 25-year-old Armed Forces competition at Point Mugu, California — draft legal, Olympic distance, racing against people with pro cards. She'd never done draft legal in her life. She said yes anyway. This week April gives us the full breakdown: learning to ride in a paceline the day before the race, surviving an ocean swim with serious tide, biking the 40k with just one other athlete while everyone else was long gone, and finishing dead last by twenty minutes in the California heat with no water at the aid stations. She also cries on the run, gets rescued by an Army medic named Stephanie, and calls it one of the top five experiences of her life. Meanwhile Kate is officially training for life — 10,000 steps a day, overnight camping with the doggos, and making peace with watching her fitness numbers drop. She checks in on how she's feeling after sharing her big news last episode. And Girl Dinner: Shift & Giggles gives us rapid-fire race day questions you won't see coming. In this episode: What draft legal racing actually is — and why it's a completely different sportWhat it feels like to be dead last in a field of elites (and how to keep going anyway)The Army medic who ran April's final mile and changed everythingApril's 9-minute PR — and why she still felt completely out of her leagueKate's slow fall: training for joy, solo camping adventures, and facing her fear of the trailGirl Dinner: Shift & Giggles — race thoughts, fails, and one very memorable answer about a post-race mealNew episodes out weekly. When It's Time To Take A Break
2026/09/30
Kate has something to share. After nearly a year of training for Ironman California — her first full — Kate made the decision to DNS. In this episode, she walks us through what actually happened: the weekend she couldn't force herself to get out the door, the trail run that turned into a hike, the two-week illness that broke the build, and the moment she realized the joy was gone. Plus what it feels like to step back from a goal when you have an audience watching. April holds space, asks the hard questions, and then admits she's counting down the days to her own off-season after XTERRA Worlds. We also talk morning routines (Kate is a phone scroller and she knows it), April's Air Force triathlon team group chat (the LTs did a full intel briefing on race-eve entertainment options — including Keanu Reeves' band), and we debut a new Girl Dinner dish: Would You Rather, triathlon edition. Kate is a lawyer who cannot stop defending her answers. It's a five-course meal. If you've ever had to let go of a goal — by choice or not — this one's for you. In this episode: Kate's decision to DNS Ironman California — the full storyWhat burnout actually feels like when it meets a bad weekThe identity piece: if you're not training, are you still a triathlete?Girl Dinner: Would You Rather (rain vs. heat, goggles vs. shoes, and the great "train alone" debate)DM us — we want to hear from you. 📣 📱 Instagram, TikTok & YouTube: @girlstalktri 🌐 girlstalktri.com Two friends. Why We Tri & Why You Should Too
2026/09/23
Two friends, three sports, zero gatekeeping. In episode one, Kate and April spill how they got into tri — driveway transitions, bike shops, a brutal Galveston sunburn — plus Kate's first Ironman, April's XTERRA Worlds qualification, and why your first race is less scary than you think. No lactate spreadsheets. Just the on-ramp we wish we'd had. Connect @girlstalktri on Instagram, TikTok & YouTube or send us your questions at [email protected]. Follow, rate, and give it a tri.
What We Wish We Knew Before Our First Triathlon
2026/09/23
Last episode we told you to go sign up for the thing. This one is everything we wish someone had told us after we did. Kate and April break down the tri terms nobody explains (T1, T2, brick workouts, wave starts, body marking — yes, someone draws on you with a Sharpie), then spill their own first-race stories: the borrowed touring bike, the bar-exam summer, the gear they thought they needed vs. what they actually showed up with. We're talking real money, real mistakes, and the exact moment each of us knew we were coming back for another one. Plus: Kate confesses "The Emergence" in Girl Dinner: Shift & Giggles, and April reveals the wrong-way DNF she's never fully recovered from. If you just signed up for your first race and you're quietly panicking — this one's for you. You already did the hard part. In this episode: The tri words nobody explains (and what actually matters on race day)Our first-race origin stories — the full, embarrassing truthWhat we spent, what we borrowed, and what you can absolutely skipGirl Dinner: Shift & Giggles — the fails and confessionsDM us your race date — we want to shout you out. 📣 📱 Instagram, TikTok & YouTube: @girlstalktri 🌐 [email protected] Two friends.
