You Waste 2 Hours a Day: Stop Spending Major Time on Minor Things
2026/10/21
Accomplish 10X More – 4 Causes of Wasting Time You already know procrastination is expensive. What most people don't notice is how it shows up in predictable ways. The delay rarely feels like laziness. It usually feels like a reasonable reason to wait. What are the four most common excuses people use to put things off?   Perfectionism   This one sounds responsible. "I just need to get a few more details right before I start." The problem is the bar keeps moving. There is always one more thing to fix or fine-tune, so the real work never begins. The people who say "good enough to start" overcome the easy excuses to procrastinate. Pessimism   These are the worst-case thinkers. They can list every reason something might fail, and none of the reasons it might work. The forecast stays negative, so action feels pointless. The shift is simple but not easy: move before the forecast improves. Momentum changes the outlook more than waiting does. Amiability   Some people delay because they don't want to bother anyone or create friction. They avoid the call, the follow-up, or the close because it might feel pushy. The result is that helpful work never reaches the people who need it. Clear, respectful action is usually received better than silence. Credibility   This one hides behind competence. The person protects how knowledgeable they look instead of stepping into situations where they might have to prove it. Distance feels safer than demonstration. The longer they stay at a distance, the harder it becomes to close the gap. None of these are permanent traits. They are habits that show up when the next step feels risky or unclear. The people who get more done notice the excuse in the moment and take a step forward anyway. If you want the rest of the picture—why these patterns form and the practical ways to interrupt them so you can finish more in the time you already have—this week's podcast goes deeper. The 3-Second Charisma Rule: How Pauses Boost Your Influence
2026/10/14
Charisma Latency: Pause After Price  Charisma is the single most powerful multiplier in persuasion because when you have it, people want to be around you, trust you, and buy from you. Ignoring the science of charisma means you have to work twice as hard to get half the results, while charismatic persuaders effortlessly glide past buyer resistance. The science of charisma is the set of psychological traits, nonverbal behaviors, and emotional triggers that build instant rapport and engage an audience. Charisma is the passing of your energy and conviction from your heart to your prospect. It is a trainable skill set built upon four core pillars: your physical presence, your inner core qualities, your verbal delivery, and your ability to empower and uplift others.   A study by researchers at the University of Toronto proved that charisma can be broken down into specific, learnable behaviors, showing that individuals trained in charismatic leadership techniques saw an immediate, measurable surge in their ability to influence others.  When you use charisma, you completely eliminate the friction that causes deals to stall or fall apart. Prospects stop viewing you as a salesperson and begin treating you as a trusted advisor. Because charismatic persuaders make buyers feel safe, understood, and inspired, prospects naturally persuade themselves to take action. They do not feel pushed or manipulated; instead, they become excited to do business with you and gladly recruit others to join your cause. Only 2 Left: When Fake Urgency Backfires
2026/10/07
Too many persuasion professionals fall into the trap of letting people walk out the door saying, "I'll think about it," only to act surprised when they never return. Procrastination is human nature, and if you do not create legitimate urgency, the human brain will default to inaction every single time. If you fail to master urgency and scarcity, you are silently influencing against yourself. Scarcity and Urgency is an intense motivational state in the human brain that drives immediate action when an opportunity feels restricted or threatened. Humans are wired to feel far more pain from a potential loss than pleasure from a potential gain. When you restrict the availability of time, quantity, access, or information, your prospect's brain automatically assigns higher value to your offer and wants to secure it before it is gone.  Is there a downside to using scarcity and urgency? Absolutely, if you use fake countdown clocks that reset when the page refreshes, or claim a sale ends today when everyone knows you run the same deal every week, you set off your prospect's subconscious sales radar and destroy your credibility. To avoid crossing the line into negative resistance and buyer distrust, your scarcity must always be 100% legitimate, believable, and clearly explained.   Legitimate scarcity causes prospects to persuade themselves to act now. By making your time, offer, or product exclusive and time-sensitive, you position yourself as an advisor rather than a desperate salesperson. Your prospects will feel a powerful internal drive to accept your offer immediately. Want more scarcity tools?  Discover how AI is using weaponized scarcity against you. Listen to this week's podcast episode of Maximize Your Influence titled "Only 2 Left: When Fake Urgency Backfires." Master the psychology of immediate action, and start persuading with power! Hack Their Brain: How Stories Trigger Trust and Concessions
2026/09/29
Master-level persuasion is never about lecturing people or forcing them into a corner with constant logic. If you fail to capture your audience's imagination and transport them into your message, you are silently negotiating against yourself. To persuade at the highest level, you must master narrative transportation, which is where a listener becomes so mentally absorbed in a story that their critical defenses drop and they physically live the experience inside their own mind. When you tell a vivid, relevant story, your prospect stops listening with a skeptical, defensive mindset and steps directly into the shoes of the story's main character. Because human beings are hardwired for stories, stories bypass the analytical mind and allow them to arrive at your conclusion.   Is there a downside to using stories in persuasion? Absolutely, and it happens the moment your story becomes too long, self-serving, or completely irrelevant to the prospect's immediate problem. To avoid crossing the line into negative resistance, you must keep your stories authentic and under three minutes long, ensuring every narrative is laser-focused on solving your prospect's specific pain point. A landmark study at Stanford University by Dr. Jennifer Aaker revealed that stories are up to 22 times more memorable than facts and statistics alone, with 63% of listeners recalling story details compared to only 5% remembering data points. When you master narrative transportation in sales and influence, you eliminate the friction that causes deals to stall. People value their own conclusions far more than yours. Stories guide them to naturally persuade themselves without ever sensing a sales pitch. They will view you as a trusted advisor who truly understands their world, making their final decision to do business with you feel entirely natural and effortless. AI Out-Persuades Humans 3 to 1: Where AI helps the sale, and where it kills trust
2026/09/22
AI Persuasion Secrets: Are you leveraging the future or getting left behind?   AI is not just a passing trend or a flashy app. It is the ultimate force multiplier for your Persuasion IQ, allowing you to prepare faster, read human psychology deeper, and scale your influence like never before.   At its core, AI acts as a fast cognitive co-pilot that can instantly analyze buyer demographics, map out negotiation scenarios, and forecast objections before you even enter the room. It does not replace the human touch, but rather supercharges your ability to understand subconscious triggers and deliver the right message at the right moment.   Is there a downside to relying on AI in persuasion? Absolutely, and it happens the exact moment you let technology replace genuine human connection and personal authenticity. If you blindly copy and paste cold, robotic AI outputs or allow automated tools to spam prospects with generic messages, you set off their sales radar, and completely destroy your trust.   To avoid crossing the line from high-tech assistance into creepy, artificial spam, you must use AI purely as a behind-the-scenes research and preparation tool while keeping your own voice, EQ, and human warmth at the center of every interaction. A study by researchers at Harvard Business School and Boston Consulting Group found that professionals using AI completed complex business analysis tasks 25% faster and produced results that were rated 40% higher in quality compared to those who did not.   AI-Powered Roleplay Leverage AI to practice high-stakes negotiation scenarios and test different closing strategies in a zero-risk environment. This sharpens your muscle memory so you enter live meetings with unshakeable confidence.   When you strategically integrate AI into your sales process, you gain an advantage in persuading and closing prospective clients. By using AI to handle research, personality mapping, and messaging structure, you enter every encounter with an elevated buying altitude and emotional clarity.   Your prospect will feel an immediate connection because your message aligns perfectly with their subconscious needs. Instead of sounding like a desperate salesperson pushing a product, you present yourself as a prepared, trusted advisor who effortlessly guides them to persuade themselves.   Technology is moving at breakneck speed, and you cannot afford to keep chopping away with a dull blade when your competitors are using laser-guided precision tools. Listen to this week's episode of Maximize Your Influence titled " AI Out-Persuades Humans 3 to 1 - Where AI helps the sale, and where it kills trust." The Pygmalion Effect - High Expectations, Higher Influence
2026/09/16
Let us face it: if you walk into a presentation, sales meeting, or team huddle expecting people to be resistant, skeptical, or disinterested, you have already sabotaged your results. Too many professionals radiate low expectations, and then wonder why their team slacks off or why prospects refuse to buy. Persuasion is a transfer of the expectations you project.  Those expectations directly shape how others perform and respond to you.     The Pygmalion Effect is a proven psychological phenomenon where higher expectations placed upon individuals lead to an increase in their performance. It's also known as a self-fulfilling prophecy: people subconsciously pick up on your subtle cues, vocal inflections, and body language. When you expect someone to succeed, or make a buying decision, your belief creates a psychological climate that makes it significantly easier for them to say YES.   Is there a downside to expectations? Absolutely, and it is known as the Golem Effect, where low or negative expectations cause a person's performance to plummet. On the flip side, unrealistic expectations can backfire just as fast, creating stress, demotivation, and buyer's remorse.     When you apply the Pygmalion Effect in sales or leadership, you gain the advantage because you control the psychological altitude of the interaction. By treating your prospects as smart and buyers, you bypass their primitive lizard brain defenses. They will naturally rise to meet the high standards you set, convincing themselves that doing business with you is the most logical and rewarding decision.     Persuade With Power Kurt Mortensen Advanced Influence Trainings Maximize Your Influence Take Your Persuasion IQ
Affective Realism - Why This Doesn't Feel Right Is Killing Your Deals
2026/09/09
Have you ever left a meeting thinking the deal was a lock, then watched it die? Most of us assume the other person saw the same offer we saw. They didn't. People do not experience your presentation as straight fact. They experience it through how their body feels in that moment. Psychologists call that affective realism: the brain uses a gut feeling as evidence about the outside world. Tired, hungry, rushed, or tense does not register as "I need lunch." It registers as "can I trust this person" or "this deal doesn't make sense." What The Science Shows One study revealed that judges were far more likely to deny parole just before lunch, as their brains interpreted the physical discomfort of hunger as a "gut feeling" that the prisoner was dangerous.` If elite judges fall victim to this, imagine how this is affecting your prospects and your income! The Leadership Mistake That Kills Trust Fast – Chad Hymas Interview
2026/09/02
Let's face it: every single one of us hits massive brick walls, unexpected setbacks, and crippling obstacles in business and in life. Too many professionals let a single rejection, a lost account, or a tough economic turn drag them straight into what is called the "loser's limp." That is the subconscious pre-excuse for failure before you even start.  True leaders and power persuaders don't break when life hits them hard; they bounce. If you don't learn how to master mental toughness, reframe your obstacles, and cultivate an unshakeable mindset, you will stay trapped in your comfort zone. To master this skill, you must understand that true resilience and transformational influence are never about fake positive thinking, reciting empty platitudes, or sitting on the couch waiting for the universe to hand you a check. It is the raw, biological ability to take life's heaviest blows, strip away all excuses, and turn profound pain into an unstoppable passion that inspires everyone around you.  In this powerful podcast episode, I interviewed my good friend Chad Hymas. He was crushed under a 2,000-pound bale of hay in a farming accident that broke his neck and left him a quadriplegic. Chad made a radical decision: he refused to be a victim, set world records in a wheelchair, and became one of the top motivational speakers on the planet, proving that your current circumstances never dictate your ultimate destiny. When you embody this level of resilience, your influence becomes magnetic because people desperately crave authentic leadership. When prospects see that you remain completely calm and optimistic in the face of adversity, their subconscious defenses melt away. This bypasses their logical skepticism and instills a deep sense of trust.   Listen to Chad Hymas's incredible journey, and step into the full measure of your potential. Everything you want in life is on the other side of persuasion and mental toughness. So stop sitting on the sidelines, tune in to this week's podcast on The Leadership Mistake That Kills Trust Fast – Chad Hymas Interview. Dealing With The Heckler/Critic - How To Disarm Difficult People Fast
2026/09/01
You could deliver a flawless presentation, have the best product, and be on the verge of closing a massive sale, but if a single hostile critic or difficult person starts heckling you and you handle it poorly, your credibility will vanish in seconds. Too many persuaders get completely derailed by a single aggressive comment, and letting the negative energy completely freeze them up.  Whether it's a boardroom bully trying to make themselves look smart or an aggressive negotiator trying to push you into a corner, all eyes are instantly on you to see what you are made of. If you get defensive, turn red, or fire back in anger, your prospect's defensive walls will go straight up, and they will walk. You must understand that dealing with difficult people, critics, or hecklers is never about winning a shouting match; it is about emotional control. At its core, heckling is simply a form of adult teasing designed to bait you into reacting because the person throwing the zinger is desperately seeking attention or trying to mask their own low self-esteem.  As a master persuader, you must learn to classify disruptions into two distinct categories: clueless hecklers who are simply missing social filters (like a crying baby, a ringing cell phone, or someone asking off-the-wall questions), and venom hecklers who are intentionally trying to tear you down to make themselves look superior. By refusing to let difficult prospects get under your skin, you project an unshakeable presence and confidence that commands respect. If you get defensive or argue, you trigger their primitive "lizard brain" threat response. Remember: your audience cannot feel at ease if you don't, and when they see you handle a hostile critic with complete, smiling composure, they will subconsciously align with you and accept your final call to action. How Dopamine Drives And Cortisol Destroys Persuasion
2026/08/19
Let's face it: you can have the best product, the best pricing, and a great reputation, but if you walk into a meeting and trigger the wrong chemical response in your prospect's brain, the gates of influence will slam shut. Persuasion is a strategic dance of brain chemistry. There are two chemical forces dictating every human decision: dopamine and cortisol. Dopamine is the ultimate goal-achieving "feel-good" chemical—the neurotransmitter of anticipation, reward, and pleasure that physically alters brain patterns to make people optimistic, creative, and highly risk-tolerant.  Cortisol, on the other hand, is the stress hormone released when a prospect feels pressured, threatened, or backed into a corner. When cortisol floods the system, the analytical prefrontal cortex shuts down, and our primitive brain takes over, immediately driving your prospect into a defensive fight-or-flight state where they view you as the enemy. When you master this chemical orchestration, you transition from a pushy salesperson to a trusted, consultative expert. Triggering dopamine makes your prospect excited about the future, allowing them to easily visualize your solution solving their deepest pain. When you keep their cortisol low, they will focus entirely on your value instead of hunting for flaws or using "it's too expensive" as a lie to get rid of you. How to Light a Fire in Anyone - Energy Transfer Secrets
2026/08/12
How to Light a Fire in Anyone - Energy Transfer Secrets Too many professionals go through their daily lives acting as "energy vampires," silently sucking the life out of everyone they meet and wondering why their emails and phone calls never get returned. True persuasion isn't about memorizing rigid scripts or dumping cold, dry data on your prospects; it is a live, dynamic transfer of pure energy and belief. If your audience isn't excited about your message, your product, or your service, it's your fault. To truly inspire and energize anyone means mastering the subtle, emotional art of leadership and persuasion. It is not false hype, drinking three Red Bulls, or bouncing around like an excited puppy. This unrealistic energy actually repels people and destroys your credibility. True inspiration is the ability to easily build deep rapport, lift your audience's mood, and project an unshakeable confidence that immediately puts people at ease. Learning how to inspire and energize yourself and others is the absolute differentiator between struggling in first gear and achieving massive success. Everything you want in life is on the other side of persuasion and influence, but you cannot lead others to the promised land if you are waiting on the couch for someone else to turn you on. Decision Paralysis - How Options Eliminate Resistance
2026/08/06
Have you ever presented the perfect solution to a prospect, only to have them reject it simply because you told them exactly what to do? When someone dictates our actions, our natural human tendency is to reject the demand because we feel forced against our will. People have an innate need for freedom and the ability to make their own choices. If you don't offer options to your audience, they will experience psychological resistance and attempt to restore their freedom. So, what exactly is the strategy of using choices and options? Offering choices, sometimes called "binds" or the alternative close, means presenting your prospect with a structured selection of two or three options where they get to make the final decision. Instead of giving them a strict "yes or no" ultimatum, you provide a few controlled alternatives that all lead to a successful outcome for you. This approach satisfies their deep psychological need for autonomy while keeping you firmly in control of the persuasion process. When it comes to selling and influencing others, providing options is how you bypass the cold brick wall of resistance. Structured choices give your audience the impression of control, which naturally increases their cooperation and commitment to the final deal. Instead of acting like a pushy salesperson dictating terms, you become a trusted consultant who empowers them to make an informed decision. Because they feel like they made the choice of their own free will, they essentially persuade themselves, significantly reducing buyer's remorse. Paint the Picture, Close the Deal – How Metaphors And Similes Influence
2026/07/29
Most people try to persuade with facts, features, and logic. That's why their message gets ignored. The top influencers use a different tool that slips past resistance and creates instant understanding. When you master metaphors and similes, you stop sounding like every other persuader and start sounding like the person people actually want to buy from. A metaphor is a direct comparison that says one thing is another ("This AI agent is your personal assistant that never sleeps"). A simile uses "like" or "as" to make the comparison ("This system works like a GPS for your business"). Both create vivid mental pictures (kind of mini story) that help your prospect feel the benefit instead of just hearing about it. Research backs this up. A study in the Journal of Advertising found that metaphorical ads produced stronger long-term memory and "stickier" brand impressions than traditional ads. The best persuaders and top sales professionals don't just inform - they make people see and feel the outcome. Metaphors and similes do exactly that. They bypass skepticism, create emotional buy-in, and turn abstract benefits into concrete desires. Master this technique on the newest episode of Maximize Your Influence on Paint the Picture, Close the Deal – How Metaphors And Similes Influence. Make the First Offer - How to Win More Negotiations
2026/07/22
In today's competitive world, mastering negotiation isn't optional—it's essential for maximizing your income, closing bigger deals, and advancing your career. Those who understand the psychology of when and why to make the first offer consistently outperform everyone. This single skill separates the good persuaders from power negotiators. Making the first offer is the strategic move where you set the anchor—the initial number or terms that pulls the entire negotiation in your favor. Instead of reacting to someone else's proposal, you take control and frame the conversation around your ideal outcome. Research shows this first offer advantage isn't just theory; it's a powerful psychological lever rooted in the anchoring effect. By making the first offer, you shape perceptions, manage expectations, and guide the other party toward solutions that favor your goals—while still creating value for them. It turns passive reacting into proactive persuasion, helping you close more deals, command higher fees, and build stronger long-term relationships. The Mindfulness Edge - How To Be Fully Present And Transform Your Influence
2026/07/14
Your ability to stay fully present and pay attention isn't just nice-to-have — it's your critical tool for building real influence. When you master being in the moment, you catch subtle cues others miss, build deeper trust, and respond with the right response instead of those autopilot reactions. This skill separates the good from the truly unstoppable persuaders who close bigger deals and create lasting impact. Mindfulness is the practice of intentionally paying attention to the present moment with openness and without judgment. It's about observing your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings as they happen — rather than getting lost in past regrets or future worries. As Jon Kabat-Zinn famously put it, it's "paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally." Mindfulness supercharges your ability to influence and sell by turning every interaction into a chance to build a genuine connection. Instead of reacting to objections, you read the room with precision, respond with empathy, and guide conversations toward win-win outcomes.  Ready to level up your presence and master mindfulness?
