The Hidden Fear Behind Being Nice
2026/10/14
You've been taking quiet satisfaction in being one of the good guys. You give. You show up. You say yes when you want to say no. In this episode, Dr. Aziz walks through what's actually running underneath the pattern most people call kindness, and why real kindness feels fundamentally different in your body afterward. The tell isn't the yes. It's what the yes leaves behind. Real kindness leaves warmth. Fear dressed up as kindness leaves fatigue, resentment, and a slow-growing sense of burnout. That distinction, followed carefully, opens up a very different kind of life. This episode covers: The specific mechanics underneath the nice person's yes Why calling it kindness lets the pattern continue running undisturbed The Wild West stick-up metaphor for what your nervous system is doing The MVP question that starts to break the spell (and why most people can't ask it) Discover your approval type. Why You Can't Stop Replaying That Conversation
2026/10/06
The conversation happened. Hours ago. Days ago. Years ago in some cases. You're still running it back. You've tried to just let time dissolve it. It hasn't worked. In this episode, Dr. Aziz explains what the replaying is actually trying to tell you, and walks through the specific practice for putting it down for good. The replaying isn't a malfunction. It's your nervous system signaling that something was unfinished. Once you can hear the signal, name what was actually unsaid, and make a real commitment about the next conversation, the loop stops on its own. This episode covers: What your brain is actually telling you when it won't stop replaying The specific questions that reveal what was left unsaid Why self-criticism about not having said it makes the replaying worse The empty-chair practice that puts the conversation down for good Discover your approval type. 7 Signs You Need People To Like You Too Much
2026/09/29
Wanting people to like you isn't the problem. Needing them to is. In this episode, Dr. Aziz walks through the specific moment when a preference for approval crosses over into a compulsion, and lays out seven concrete signs the reader may recognize from their own life. Some of these are the ones you've named before. Others are more subtle. Together, they diagnose one underlying condition your nervous system may have been running for longer than you realized. This episode covers: The exact crossover from I'd like to be liked to I need to be liked Seven concrete signs you may be running the pattern (with real examples) Why one criticism can outweigh a hundred positive reflections The root cause underneath all seven, and what actually shifts it Discover your approval type. Why You Can't Stop Caring What Other People Think
2026/09/23
You've been told for years that if you just cared less, you'd care less. You've probably tried. It hasn't worked. Not because you didn't try hard enough, but because the advice was pointed at the wrong target. In this episode, Dr. Aziz walks through what's actually happening in your nervous system when you can't stop replaying the meeting, wondering if that text was worded right, or worrying about how the last conversation landed. He unpacks the specific formula your nervous system wired up in childhood, why just have more confidence doesn't reach the layer where the pattern lives, and what actually starts to shift it. This episode covers: Why caring less is impossible advice (and what's actually running the pattern) The equation your nervous system installed between ages 4 and 10 Why highly confident, successful people still can't stop replaying the meeting The one shift that starts to unwire disapproval-equals-danger Discover your approval type. Why One Negative Comment Ruins Your Day
2026/09/16
Ten people tell you the presentation was great. One person emails you afterward and says something dismissive. Which one plays in your head for the next three days? You already know the answer. In this episode, Dr. Aziz shares a hate email he received today, contrasts his current reaction with how the same message would have wrecked him a decade ago, and unpacks what actually changed in between. He walks through why some criticism cuts to the core while other criticism bounces off entirely, and the three layers of internal shift that make the difference. This episode covers: Why some criticism cuts deep and other criticism doesn't (it isn't what you think) The hate email Dr. Aziz got today, and why his reaction shocked him The email that used to wreck him back when he was building his list What actually changes when someone genuinely stops needing everyone to approve Discover your approval type. What 20 Years Of Social Anxiety Actually Felt Like
2026/09/08
This episode is different from most of what Dr. Aziz makes. It's the story of what twenty years of social anxiety actually felt like, told from his own life rather than through clinical examples or composite clients. The moment it began, at age 11, in a new school where he wore the wrong socks and felt himself starting to disappear. The middle school dance where he was having the time of his life until he overheard two kids in the bathroom mocking everyone who was dancing, and walked out having quietly decided he wouldn't dance again for a decade. The bread-aisle moments in college, when he would freeze in front of an attractive woman at the toaster and pretend to look at the jam. And the night he finally turned, not on his eight-thousandth try at thinking his way out of it, but in a moment that came from somewhere deeper than thought. The version of Dr. Aziz you see now looks like someone who never went through any of this. He did. Severely. For two decades. This episode is what it actually felt like, and what finally broke him out. Discover your approval type. Are You An Introvert? Or Just Anxious?
2026/09/01
You leave the party, the barbecue, the work mixer. You're exhausted. You've been telling yourself for years that's just how introverts work. Maybe. Or maybe what you've been calling introversion has been doing a different kind of work in your life: holding the underlying anxiety in place by labeling it as personality. In this episode, Dr. Aziz makes a careful distinction. Real introversion exists. But most of what people call being introverted is something else: anxiety wearing the costume of introversion. He walks through the patterns that actually drain you in social settings, and shares a story about going from being drained after three hours of therapy sessions to leading 10-12 hour workshops feeling fully energized. This episode covers: What real introversion is, and what most people are mistaking for it The five patterns that drain you in social situations while you're calling it introversion How Dr. Aziz went from drained after three therapy hours to energized after full workshop days The principle: you can be an introvert and love being around people, as long as you're fully self-expressed Discover your approval type. The Real Reason You Feel Self-Conscious
2026/08/25
You walk into the meeting. The room is full. The next three minutes turn into a slow-motion nightmare where you can't access your own intelligence or charm. You've called this insecurity and tried to fix it with more confidence. The fix has never quite worked. In this episode, Dr. Aziz explains why self-consciousness isn't actually an insecurity problem. It's a monitoring problem. You're tracking ten variables about yourself at the same time (eye contact, voice tone, blushing, posture, rambling, on and on), and the monitoring is what's eating your capacity. He shares a story about a client who was considering medical interventions to stop blushing because he was convinced it was wrecking his career, and the realization that finally let him see what was actually running. This episode covers: Why self-consciousness isn't an insecurity problem (it's a monitoring problem) The 10-variable list exercise that makes the mechanism visible Why the smoke alarm in your kitchen is the right metaphor for your shaky voice The training move that shifts the pattern (and why talking yourself out of it doesn't) Discover your approval type. Why People Don't Take You Seriously
2026/08/18
You spoke up. You were clear. You told them what you needed and by when. They said yes. Then the deadline came and the thing wasn't there. If you've been getting more direct and watching it still not land, there's a specific reason. Directness is one ingredient. There's a second ingredient almost no one teaches you. In this episode, Dr. Aziz walks through what that missing ingredient is and why it's so uncomfortable for nice people to use. He breaks down the two failure modes most people run (the Avoider says nothing, the Diplomat says it so softly it sounds like their problem), shows what to actually say when someone misses an agreement, and unpacks the concept of the aura of authority that determines how you're treated regardless of your title. This episode covers: The missing ingredient in being direct that almost no one teaches you The two failure modes nice people run when someone doesn't follow through The moment of silence after you've named the impact (and why it does most of the work) Why authority comes from how you carry yourself, not your title or years of experience Discover your approval type. Why Boundaries Feel So Hard
2026/08/11
You know the techniques. You've read the books. You can recite the scripts. In the moment, none of it shows up. The standard boundaries advice has been missing the question that fires underneath every boundary moment: am I allowed to ask for this? In this episode, Dr. Aziz walks through why most boundaries advice fails high-functioning people who already know the techniques. He demystifies what boundaries actually are (just preferences), uses a shoes-off-in-the-house example to make the concept disarmingly concrete, and breaks down the four levels of boundaries that almost no one teaches together. This episode covers: The unconscious question (am I allowed to ask for this?) that keeps boundary techniques from working The four levels: knowing your preference, communicating it, holding your ground, and the if-then consequences most people never get to How the Diplomat pattern softens boundary requests into invisibility (with an example you'll recognize instantly) A recent client story: two boundaries in one week, and what the other people did that floored him Discover your approval type. Why Facing Your Fears Doesn't Work
2026/08/04
You did the bold thing. You went through with it. It even went well. So why isn't the doubt gone? Why does the next meeting, the next date, the next big moment still produce the same anxiety? In this episode, Dr. Aziz unpacks why get out of your comfort zone and face your fears is incomplete advice that's been failing high-functioning people for years. The exposures aren't the problem. What's missing is what's supposed to happen during the exposures, and most people are running so hard at the surface task they never get to it. He shares a story about a Toastmasters client who did fifteen polished speeches without ever updating her actual fear, and a moment from his own training where he taught a group of college students about test anxiety by being the most visibly anxious person in the room. This episode covers: Why exposure-alone keeps high-functioning professionals stuck in endurance mode for decades The thing your nervous system actually needs to learn from each exposure (and what most people accidentally prevent) The hyper-prepared, polished version of you that's been blocking the real update The toggle from endurance mode to enjoyment mode, and what changes when you flip it Discover your approval type. “Be Yourself” Is Terrible Advice
2026/07/28
Right before a date, an interview, or a family gathering, someone tells you to just be yourself. Has that ever actually helped? For most of the people Dr. Aziz works with, it's done the opposite. In this episode, Dr. Aziz explains why be yourself and be authentic fail as guidance, even though they're pointing at something real. The map they hand you is no map at all, so most people end up constructing an idealized fantasy version of themselves to perform. That's a different kind of cage. He walks through a much more useful framework: identify what you value and live it today, not someday. This episode covers: Why just be yourself is well-meaning but useless advice The fantasy-self trap: how the absence of a real map produces a different kind of cage How to actually find your values, even if you draw a blank when someone asks you The end-of-day test that tells you whether you were more yourself today than yesterday Discover your approval type. You're Allowed To Push Back
2026/07/21
"In those situations, it's not being defensive. It's defending myself. And those are two very different things. And one is actually extremely necessary and healthy." Someone says something to you that's out of line. You say nothing. Not because you don't have a response, but because the line I don't want to be defensive has functioned as a gag order for the last twenty years. In this episode, Dr. Aziz unpacks the cultural confusion that's been keeping a lot of high-functioning people silent in situations where they should be speaking. He distinguishes between being defensive (closed off to feedback, refusing accountability) and defending yourself (asserting your reality, your perspective, your no). Personal growth culture has collapsed the two, and the cost is enormous. He also shares a consulting-group story he hadn't told before: four therapists spending five to seven minutes each interrogating his career decision to move into coaching. The kind of conversation that, when you stay silent in it, you end up carrying in your head for three weeks. Discover your approval type. Why Saying No Feels So Bad
2026/07/14
Someone asks you for something. The word no forms in your head. What comes out of your mouth is yes. In this episode, Dr. Aziz breaks down why just say no more never quite works. There's a specific pattern running underneath the guilt and the override, and the standard get better boundaries advice doesn't reach the layer where it lives. He also names the pattern he himself runs when he takes his own quiz: the Fixer. This episode covers: Why the trap of saying no makes both yes and no feel terrible The Fixer pattern (one of the four ways your nervous system tries to keep you safe when disapproval is on the table) and the two levels of fixing most Fixers don't realize they're doing A story Dr. Aziz tells on himself about a Thursday night that should have been a no The saying he uses with every client about why recalibration always feels wrong before it feels right Discover your approval type. Why You Feel You Have To Earn People's Approval
2026/07/07
There's a pressure that follows you into every social situation. A running commentary that says whatever you're doing is wrong. You walk into the meeting, the party, the date, and the inner observer is already activated. In this episode, Dr. Aziz names the specific lie underneath all of it. I have to be something to get something. And he makes the case that the math is backwards. The version of you that's pressuring yourself to be impressive is actually less attractive than the version of you who isn't. You'll learn: What actually makes someone magnetic in a conversation, and why it isn't polish The dancing breakthrough that taught Dr. Aziz what real freedom looks like The wild-snow-leopard versus zoo-leopard distinction that captures the entire problem The specific 2% experiment you can run in your next conversation to test the whole thing for yourself Discover your approval type.
