Many individuals and businesses have written "why" statements to express their purpose. The book of 1 John has several statements that tell us "why" it was written: 1 John 1:3-4, 2:1, and 5:13. Our passage tonight is 1 John 1:5-10, examining four main threads: what we say, darkness and light, the output of our lives, and fellowship. John's message that "God is light" sets the foundation for identifying genuine belief and false belief through tests such as walking in fellowship, confessing sin, obeying commands, loving other believers, and knowing righteousness. These tests help assure believers of their genuine faith while also identifying areas for growth and confession.
