Description

Shane Ramer is the founder and host of That Sober Guy Podcast, a culture and performance platform examining what happens when high-performing men remove alcohol and reclaim clarity, focus, and leverage. Since launching the show in 2014, Shane has reached millions of listeners across 100+ countries by challenging conventional narratives around masculinity, success, and sobriety. His work sits at the intersection of identity, discipline, and modern performance. Shane works privately with executives, founders, athletes, and creatives who are no longer interested in numbing high performance with low-level coping tools. His approach reframes sobriety not as healing, but as optimization, removing friction so men can operate with precision in business, health, and leadership. He is also the creator of the Sober Male Index, a performance-focused data project tracking how sobriety impacts focus, productivity, income, and social dynamics in men. Shane is a husband of 20 years, a father of two, and lives his work through faith, fitness, and daily discipline.

You Can't Follow Jesus and Stay the Same
2026/10/14
Everybody wants a better life. But are you actually willing to change? We live in a world obsessed with self-improvement, optimization, and the next big thing promising to make your life better. More apps, more advice, more influencers selling you the perfect morning routine. But here's the question: Are you becoming a better person, or just a more efficient version of your old self? You can get sober, get in shape, make more money, and check every box on the self-improvement list. But what about your character? Your relationships? How you treat people when nobody's watching? In this episode, we're talking about what it really means to become new through Jesus, why faith should change how you live, and how to stop trying to fix everybody else while ignoring the things you need to work on. You don't need another upgraded version of the old you. Maybe it's time to become new. Plus, a few laughs about social media influencers, ridiculous marketing, and why everybody suddenly has a masterclass to sell you. My Man Brain Doesn't Trust God
2026/10/08
What if you don’t need to have everything figured out? We live in a culture obsessed with optimization, planning and control. We track everything, analyze everything and want to know exactly how things are going to turn out. But faith doesn’t always work that way. In this episode, Shane digs into what Jesus feeding the 5,000 can teach us about trusting God when the math doesn’t make sense. Sometimes our instinct is to analyze the problem, calculate the odds and figure everything out, while God may simply be asking us to trust Him. But trusting God doesn’t mean sitting around and being a lazy ass either. Do the next right thing. Do the work. Limit the expectation. Trust God with the outcome. We also get into what it looks like to share your faith without beating people over the head with a Bible. Let your life create the question. Love people. Serve people. Live differently. But don’t confuse attraction with compromise, Jesus never changed the truth just because people didn’t like the message. Maybe you don’t need the entire plan today. Maybe you just need enough faith to take the next step. Less: “God, here’s my plan. Please bless it.” More: “God, show me where You’re leading.” Join “The Victory Circle”, our FREE Sober Guy Mens Community at https://www.thatsoberguy.com/offers/SvjjuEQ2/checkout Want to go 30 Days Alcohol Free? I Tried Everything Except Jesus
2026/10/01
What if the thing you’ve been searching for isn’t another drink, another high, more success, or even a better version of yourself? This week, we’re talking about what happens when the things we use to escape, cope or prove ourselves stop delivering what we thought they would. After a night at The Whosoevers Boise Invasion grand opening with P.O.D., Head and Fieldy from Korn, Lacey Sturm of Flyleaf, Dave Buckner from Papa Roach and many other amazing people, one message stood out: “Religion is dead. This is about a relationship with God.” Maybe you’ve spent years searching too. Alcohol. Drugs. Money. Success. Approval. Relationships. Work. Constantly trying to become a better version of yourself. But what if you don’t just need to do better? What if you need to become new? In John 3:5–8, Jesus talks about being born again, born of the Spirit. And John 3:30 gives us another challenge: “He must become greater; I must become less.” Less ego. Less control. Less trying to prove ourselves. More of Him. This episode is about sobriety, surrender, relationship over religion, and finding the peace we may have been searching for in all the wrong places. You don’t need to have God figured out. Maybe you just start with an honest question: “Jesus, if You’re real, show me.” And yes… we also learn that getting sober does NOT make a 45-year-old body recover from a mosh pit any faster. Athletic Brewing is Changing the Game | Why NFL Quarterbacks Are Betting on Non-Alcoholic Beer, Performance & a New Drinking Culture
2026/09/17
Athletic Brewing Is Changing the Game. What happens when NFL quarterbacks stop just drinking the beer and start owning the company? Dak Prescott and Drake Maye recently became athlete-owners of Athletic Brewing, one of the biggest names in the non-alcoholic beer movement. And their involvement raises a much bigger question: Are we watching a major shift in sports culture? For decades, beer and professional sports were practically inseparable. The old-school NFL quarterback was the guy crushing beers after the game. Today, elite athletes are talking about recovery, sleep, performance, longevity, and what they put in their bodies. And now some of those same athletes are putting their names, platforms, and money behind non-alcoholic beer. Shane Ramer takes a curious, funny, and sometimes skeptical look at Athletic Brewing, Dak Prescott, Drake Maye, non-alcoholic beer, masculinity, performance culture, and the rapidly changing relationship between athletes and alcohol. Is non-alcoholic beer actually cool? Is it just fake beer for people who don't want to admit they're drinking? Why does someone else's beverage seem to bother people so much? And could “I want to feel good tomorrow” become the new flex? Shane also gets personal about his own relationship with alcohol and why he believes the bigger conversation isn't simply about being “sober.” It's about becoming more intentional about what helps you perform, connect, celebrate, recover, and actually enjoy your life. Because maybe the future isn't about whether you drink or don't drink. Maybe it's about whether you're getting everything you want out of your life. This is a conversation about beer. But it's really about where sports, culture, business, and performance are headed next. What the Hell Are We Supposed to Believe? 9/11, $2.3 Trillion, Tony Romo, Trump & 13 Years Sober
2026/09/09
25 years after 9/11, we’re still living in the world it created. Security. Surveillance. War. Media. Technology. Fear. Freedom. September 11 changed America in ways most of us never could have imagined. And now, 25 years later, it’s worth asking: Did we actually learn anything? We’ll also get into the $2.3 trillion question, Tony Romo, Trump and AI, and some of the strange connections surrounding the world we’re living in today. And for me, there’s one more reason this date matters. September 11 is also the day I gave up drinking 13 years ago. One day changed a country. One day changed my life. We're All Full of $h!t | Tiger Woods, Bill Simmons, Mark Ruffalo & the Beautiful Art of Explaining Away Bad Decisions
2026/09/03
We’re all full of shit. Tiger Woods, Bill Simmons, Mark Ruffalo — three completely different stories, but somehow the same theme: everybody’s got an explanation. Tiger crashes his car. Bill gets caught up in a sports betting mess. Mark Ruffalo finds himself in the middle of a $111 billion media merger and an internet outrage cycle. And then there’s the rest of us. In this episode, Shane gets into why we’re so good at explaining our decisions, defending our behavior, and convincing ourselves that maybe the thing we did wasn’t really that bad. Because sometimes the biggest problem isn’t what we did. It’s the story we tell ourselves about why we did it. Culture, controversy, celebrity chaos, sports, sobriety, and a little reality check along the way. HEART ATTACK. ANGELS. GOD. CALIFORNIA | Sonny Mayo on Surviving, Starting Over & What Actually Matters
2026/09/02
Sonny Mayo has spent decades living the life most musicians only dream about. A veteran guitarist and longtime fixture in the heavy music world, Sonny has performed and recorded with bands including Snot, Sevendust, Hed PE, Amen, and the Exies, building a career around loud music, relentless touring, and life on the road. But these days, Sonny’s life looks very different. After recently suffering a massive heart attack and undergoing bypass surgery, Sonny found himself facing something no tour, album, or guitar could prepare him for: his own mortality. And as he fought his way through surgery and recovery, something strange started happening. His caregivers had names like Enoch, Michael, Angel and Gabriel, and his head surgeon was wearing a shirt featuring a burning heart. Coincidence? Or was something bigger happening? In this wide-ranging conversation, Sonny and Shane go far beyond the heart attack. They talk about God, Jesus, spirituality vs. organized religion, sobriety, mortality, and what happens when life forces you to reevaluate everything you thought mattered. They also go down some very different roads: COVID, the Palisades fires, leaving California, the changing culture of America, retiring from music, and Sonny’s new life in Arizona building a real estate business with his wife. After decades in music, Sonny has officially stepped away from the stage, but not from the conversation. This is a story about surviving, starting over, questioning everything, and realizing that maybe the greatest performance of your life begins after the applause stops. We LOVE A Train Wreck | Jed York, Deshaun Watson, Katey Sagal & Why America Is Fighting Canada
2026/08/26
Why are we so obsessed with watching other people fail? This week, Shane dives into the bizarre arrest of 49ers CEO Jed York, Deshaun Watson getting booed by Cleveland fans, Katey Sagal celebrating 40 years of sobriety, Trump’s IndyCar spectacle in Washington, D.C., and the latest U.S.-Canada political beef. It’s sports, celebrity culture, politics, sobriety and a whole lot of absurdity, with a sober-minded perspective on why we’re so drawn to the chaos. Because apparently, good news doesn't get clicks. But somebody fist-fighting at Costco over 6 Kirkland towels and an umbrella? Now THAT'S content. We Have Officially Lost the Plot | UFC Controversy, NFL Drama, Baseball's Fourth Out & Politics
2026/08/19
UFC controversy, Jayden Daniels and the great LSU jersey-number debate, baseball somehow discovering a fourth out, and the latest circus that is American politics. In this episode, Shane Ramer takes a sarcastic look at the strange world we're living in, and asks why we've become so obsessed with everything, all the time. From athletes and attention-seeking to politics, social media, and the never-ending need to have an opinion, maybe the real problem isn't that there's too much happening... Maybe we're consuming too much of it. Shane also gets into what sobriety taught him about protecting your attention, staying clear-headed, and knowing when to step away from the noise. It's sports. It's culture. It's politics. It's ridiculous. And apparently, baseball has four outs now. Welcome to the plot. We're all a little lost. Brad Pitt Is Drinking Again... And Apparently We Give a $h!T | Celebrity Sobriety, Social Media Scams & Why Everyone Needs to Get Off the Internet
2026/08/13
In this episode, Shane takes a sarcastic look at Brad’s decision to drink after seven years sober, the obsession with celebrity recovery, and why we seem to care more about what famous people are doing than what’s happening in our own lives. Then we go down the social media rabbit hole, Facebook arguments, influencer scams, “COMMENT FART AND I’LL SEND YOU MY FREE GUIDE,” and the bizarre reality that social media used to be fun.Because maybe the bigger problem isn't Brad Pitt drinking. Maybe it's that we're all spending way too much time watching everybody else live their lives. Funny, irreverent, and occasionally uncomfortable, as usual. Nobody Wants the Truth Anymore: We Want Better Excuses.
2026/08/07
In this episode, Shane takes a look at modern culture and asks why we're surrounded by more information, more convenience, and more self-improvement content than ever... yet so many people still feel stuck. From social media "experts" and AI to dopamine, distraction, and the comfort economy, we explore why real change has less to do with finding the perfect hack and more to do with doing the hard things we've been avoiding. Because maybe the biggest obstacle isn't alcohol. Maybe it's our addiction to comfort. Episode Highlights: Why everyone has advice—but few people take action The comfort trap and modern distractions How attention has become today's most valuable asset Why avoiding discomfort keeps us stuck The performance mindset that changes everything ️ If you enjoyed this episode, subscribe, leave a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, and share it with a friend. 2026/08/03

We're More Connected Than Ever - So Why Is Everyone Miserable?
2026/07/23
Everything is faster. Everything is easier. So why does it feel like everyone is more anxious, distracted, and exhausted than ever? This week, Shane takes a look at modern culture through the lens of performance, sobriety, and a healthy dose of sarcasm. From AI coworkers and wellness gadgets to dopamine addiction and convenience culture, we explore why we're optimizing everything except the things that actually matter. Has technology made us better... or just busier? If success is easier to access than ever before, why are so many people still stuck? This episode isn't about rejecting technology, it's about asking better questions, taking back your attention, and removing the distractions that quietly keep you from becoming the person you're capable of being. Because maybe the greatest performance hack isn't another app... Maybe it's learning to live with a little more intention. Episode Highlights: Why convenience may be making us weaker AI, productivity, and the illusion of having more time The billion-dollar wellness industry vs. real health Dopamine: the new performance drug Why alcohol isn't always the problem, the distraction is How to reclaim your focus and perform at your highest level ️ If you enjoyed this episode, subscribe, leave a review, and share it with someone who's ready to stop optimizing everything except their own life.
