1 John | 4:1-3

Not everything we hear or are taught is true, so John calls God’s people to be discerning about what they believe. Rather than accepting every teaching without question, we are called to “test the spirits” and consider whether what we hear aligns with the truth of Jesus. John gives us a clear foundation for discernment: the Spirit of God always leads us toward a true confession of Jesus Christ, the Son of God who came in the flesh. In a world filled with competing ideas about who Jesus is, may we become people who know the truth, test what we hear, and remain firmly rooted in Jesus.

Our hearts were never meant to have the last word, God was. Because we are children of God, made righteous through Jesus and not through our own effort, we are free to practice righteousness without the burden of proving ourselves. Yet following Jesus means learning to disciple our hearts when our feelings, fears, or desires pull us away from what is true.
John reminds us that our hearts can sincerely believe something and still be wrong, but God is greater than our hearts and knows everything. Through His Spirit, His Word, and His people, we can prevail upon our hearts until they become confident in Him. Sometimes obedience comes before our feelings change: we forgive, give, endure, and love because we trust God’s way produces life. As we keep practicing righteousness, love becomes visible and others experience the life of Christ through us. We belong to Jesus already; now we get to trust Him enough to let Him have the final word.

Our righteousness is not something we achieve; it is the gift of Jesus, secured by His work and received through faith. Because we belong to Him, we are invited to practice the righteousness He has already given us. This is more than keeping rules. True righteousness is rightness expressed through love—the kind of love we see perfectly in Jesus, who gave Himself completely for us.
As we fix our eyes on Jesus, we learn to make our lives available for the flourishing of others. Love moves beyond words into deeds, generosity, humility, and obedience. We do not lay ourselves down to earn God’s favor, but because in Christ we are already secure and deeply loved. When we fail, we practice again, trusting the Spirit to form Christ in us. As we give ourselves to one another in love, righteousness produces life, and our shared life becomes a testimony to the wisdom and beauty of God.

From the beginning, God’s people have been called to love one another. John points us back to Cain, whose jealousy and hatred toward his brother eventually led to murder, revealing what happens when hatred is allowed to take root in the heart. Jesus calls us to a radically different way, a life marked by love, even when the world responds to us with hatred. Our love for one another is evidence that God has brought us out of death and into life. May we be people who refuse the way of Cain and instead embody the self-giving love of Jesus toward one another.

Righteousness is given entirely by Jesus; He takes our sin and gives us His righteousness, so our identity and eternal life are secure apart from our performance. Because righteousness always produces life and sin always produces death, practicing the way of Jesus leads to real flourishing while practicing sin leads to withering and destruction. Practicing righteousness, even with many failures, both protects us and others from the effects of sin and participates in God’s undoing of death and darkness in the world.
Family Formation Sunday: Through the Waters
2026/08/30
In this special Family Formation Sunday message from Matthew 3:13–17, we explore Jesus’ baptism and the deep human longing to belong. Through the waters of baptism, we see the good news that God loves us, rescues us, and welcomes us into his family, inviting us to trust Jesus, follow him, and live with the confidence that in him we are deeply loved and never alone.
1 John | 3:1-3

John calls us to behold a love unlike anything the world can offer: the astonishing, otherworldly love of God that does not merely forgive sinners, but makes them His children. This love gives us a new identity now and a greater hope for what we will become when Jesus returns. And as we fix our hope on seeing Christ and becoming like Him, His radically different love begins to make us different too, producing lives increasingly marked by His goodness.
1 John | 2:28-29

Those who abide in Jesus now will be ready to meet Him when He returns. Because we are learning to know, trust, and remain in Christ today, His coming will not bring confusion or shame, but confidence before the One we already know. And this abiding relationship with Jesus produces a life increasingly marked by His righteousness, revealing that we have truly been born of Him.
1 John | 2:26-27

There is only one true gospel: Jesus as God in the flesh who lived, died, and rose. Any “new” or altered version is darkness and death, no matter how compelling. Believers, already anointed and indwelled by the Spirit, are called to abide in the Spirit, the Word, and biblical community so that this unchanging gospel continually informs every circumstance of life, producing stability, contentment, and faithfulness.
1 John 2:24-25

Remain rooted in the foundational truth of Jesus, because as you abide in that truth and practice spiritual disciplines (Scripture, community, repentance, worship), you show evidence of genuine union with the Son and the Father. This abiding produces not just future life after death but a present, transformative quality of life— peace, joy, and spiritual fruit, that confirms God is at work in you.
1 John 2:18-23

The “last hour” is the whole period between Jesus’ ascension and return, marked by a divide between those who hold to the true Christ and “antichrists” who reshape or deny Him, often from within the church. Believers are called to be urgently vigilant, deeply grounded in the real Jesus and the gospel so they can discern and reject false teaching while still loving those who are deceived.
1 John 2:15-17
2026/07/19
True flourishing does not come from ideal circumstances but from trusting and walking in the way of Jesus, whose love and promises secure both our present and eternal life. Believers are called to reject the “world” as the rebellious order that seeks life through experience, possession, and status, and instead reorder their loves around God, filling their lives with His Word and ways, which alone abide forever.
Carrying Me Home
2026/07/12
Life is full of real and perceived dangers, but beneath every “dangerous chapter” is a completely safe story because God has us securely in His care. God has already claimed His people, carries them all the way home, and will not fail them, even when they feel overwhelmed or faithless.
1 John 2:12-14

John composes a poem to demonstrate to his readers the blessings they possess in Christ! He addresses the young believers, reassuring them that their sins have been forgiven. This fundamental truth serves as the cornerstone of our faith as followers of Jesus. John also reminds the young men and women of their triumph over the enemy. To the Fathers and mothers, he emphasizes that the God we worship is the same God who has loved and protected us from the very beginning. Through these various reminders, John conveys to us that regardless of the ups and downs, trials and joys we may encounter, we are eternally secure in our status as those who have been sealed in Jesus.
1 John 2:7-11
2026/06/28
John reminds his readers that love is the primary indicator of being in Christ. He emphasizes that the natural progression of being connected to the God of love is to embody great love. However, he warns us that those who harbor hatred towards fellow believers demonstrate a lack of understanding of the God they profess to follow. As followers of Jesus, let us strive to remain connected to the vine, enabling us to bear the fruit of love.
