The UK Tested Its Stablecoin Rules With Real Firms. Here’s What Changed | The FCA’s Matthew Long
2026/10/22
How do the rules that govern new financial services actually get written? And what happens when a regulator tests them on real products before finalising them? In this episode of The London Fintech Podcast, Tony Clark is joined by Matthew Long, Director of Payments and Digital Assets at the FCA, to explore how the UK built its crypto and stablecoin regime. They also look at what happened when the regulator tested its proposed stablecoin rules with real firms in a live sandbox. Matthew, who has led the design of the regime since 2022, explains what the testing revealed and how the final rules changed after consultation and testing. The changes range from simplifying how backing assets are calculated to making disclosure requirements less prescriptive. He also shares what surprised the regulator about how quickly fintech firms could develop new solutions. The conversation also covers the opening of the FCA’s authorisation gateway for crypto firms and the early response from applicants. Matthew sets out what firms need to show to be authorised, including clear governance, wind-down plans and strong financial crime controls. Matthew also discusses how the UK is working with regulators internationally and the upcoming work on decentralised finance and tokenised payments. He explains how the FCA is beginning to examine questions such as liability when AI makes payments, through its supercharged sandbox. For anyone building, investing in or following the UK’s digital asset market, this is a rare look at how financial regulation is made, tested and changed, and what comes next. 00:00 Trailer & Intro 01:20 How the UK's Crypto Rules Get Written 02:09 The Authorisation Gateway Opens 04:03 Guidance, Timelines and the Market the FCA Wants 06:11 What Counts as a Crypto Firm 07:47 From Registration to Full Authorisation 08:54 Inside the Stablecoin Sandbox 12:08 What Testing Changed in the Final Rules 14:33 What Surprised the Regulator 15:38 What Firms Need to Show to Get Authorised 20:23 Working With Regulators Globally 23:48 What's Next: DeFi, Tokenised Payments and New Payment Rails 29:06 Keeping Up With Fast-Moving Technology 31:38 AI Making Payments and the Supercharged Sandbox 37:39 Advice for Firms Not Yet Involved in Crypto 40:01 The FCA's Mission for the UK Market 43:15 Career Lessons and Life Outside Work

Blockchain is disappearing into finance. What changes next?
2026/08/26
Blockchain may have its greatest impact on finance when customers stop seeing it. In this episode of the London Fintech Podcast, Tony Clark speaks with Marc Boiron, CEO of Polygon Labs, about the convergence of blockchain and traditional financial infrastructure — and why the future of digital finance may be less about replacing existing systems and more about making blockchain invisible beneath familiar financial products. The conversation explores what stablecoins are already making possible, what the growing adoption of blockchain infrastructure actually tells us, and why faster settlement alone is not enough to transform financial services. Marc also explains Polygon's Open Money Stack and the thinking behind bringing more of the payment journey together while keeping the underlying infrastructure open and interoperable. The discussion looks beyond payments and digital assets to ask why banks, wealth managers, insurers, fintechs and market infrastructure providers should be paying attention. Tony and Marc also examine the limits of the current technology, including regulation, risk, integration, liquidity and customer protection — and where existing financial rails may still be the better answer. AI, risk & reality: Inside modern lending decisions
2026/04/21
In this episode of the London Fintech Podcast, Tony Clark speaks with Christoph Rieche, CEO and Co-Founder of iwoca, about his transition from Goldman Sachs to building one of Europe’s leading SME lending platforms. “More than 80% of our customers receive instant credit decisions… and can draw funding the same day.” That capability sits at the heart of iwoca’s proposition — transforming SME lending from a slow, uncertain process into something fast, data-driven, and accessible. Christoph explains how API integrations and real-time data sharing allow businesses to move from application to funding in record time, unlocking opportunities that would otherwise be lost. Christoph shares how a desire to “build something with my own hands” led him into entrepreneurship, and how iwoca has grown into a data-driven lender helping small businesses access fast, flexible financing. From the early days to scaling through uncertainty, he reflects on the “roller coaster” of building a fintech business with real-world impact. The conversation dives deep into how AI and data science are transforming credit decisioning, enabling faster and more accurate lending decisions for underserved SMEs. The #1 mistake entrepreneurs make (and how to fix it)
2026/04/08
Entrepreneurship offers endless opportunities, but the real challenge is knowing which ones to pursue. In this episode of the London Fintech Podcast, Tony Clark speaks with James Benham, CEO & Co-Founder at JBK & Terra and host of the InsurTech Geek Podcast, to reflect on a wide-ranging career spanning technology, insurance, and construction, and the hard-earned lessons that come with it. The conversation explores how procurement and RFP processes are increasingly incorporating supplier diversity, creating opportunities for smaller, specialist firms to compete alongside large consultancies. James shares how this shift is shaping vendor ecosystems and why there is a growing appetite for alternative providers. As the discussion turns to career reflections, a central theme emerges: focus. James highlights how early-stage entrepreneurs often spread themselves too thin across industries and opportunities, delaying true expertise and scale. He explains why learning to say “no”, and resisting the pull of “shiny objects”, is one of the most critical skills for long-term success. They also explore the realities of bootstrapping, the discipline it requires, and why building sustainably without external capital can create stronger, more resilient businesses. The episode closes with insights into continuous learning, from long-form business podcasts to classic management books, and why case-study-driven thinking remains one of the most effective ways to understand how great companies are built. Whether you’re an early-stage founder or an experienced operator, this episode offers practical lessons on focus, decision-making, and building with intention. 📌 Topics covered: • How RFPs and supplier diversity are shaping fintech and consulting • Why smaller firms are gaining traction alongside large consultancies • The importance of focus in entrepreneurship • Learning to say no and avoid “shiny object” syndrome • Bootstrapping vs venture capital — building sustainable businesses • The role of continuous learning, podcasts, and business case studies 🔗 Learn more: Tony Clark: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tclark100/ James Benham: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jbenham/ NextWave Consulting: www.nxwave.com InsurTech Geek Podcast: https://insurtechgeek.com/ Acquired podcast: https://www.youtube.com/@AcquiredFM Good to Great by James Collins: https://amzn.eu/d/0f8rgsjx Traction by Gino Wickman: https://amzn.eu/d/02f4Mlb6 Drive by Daniel H.
