VMP 313: What's Working Now To Fill Your Practice Schedule
2026/10/02
A pet owner called a veterinary clinic after hours to arrange euthanasia for their animal. The clinic's AI receptionist answered, but it got stuck. It kept saying, "I'm sorry you're going through that," then hung up. The technology is improving, but in a moment that sensitive, it has to work. That's the tension Trace, our customer success manager at Maverick Digital Marketing, and I explore in this episode: AI can help veterinary practices move faster, but using it without human judgment can create costly mistakes. We talk about why AI-generated marketing plans can sound convincing while overlooking a clinic's budget, clients, and local market. One practice spending just $10 a day was advised to divide its budget across ten campaigns, leaving each one too little money to gain traction. Another recommendation was to increase branded search spending even though the campaign was already capturing 98 percent of available impressions. Trace shares how he uses AI to check and improve his work, rather than handing over the decisions, and why local context still matters.
We also discuss what happens when technology gets between a practice and a pet owner. Some AI phone systems tell callers seeking same-day appointments that someone will call them back, even when the clinic has openings and the person is ready to book. I understand why callers want to talk to a real person, especially when they're worried about a pet. Trace and I also get into the phone-handling issues that can hide behind promising campaign metrics. A campaign may bring in calls, but if receptionists send callers to other clinics, don't offer clear appointment options, or struggle to guide the conversation, those calls may not become appointments. We talk about practical ways to make calls more helpful, including offering two appointment times, asking whether someone prefers mornings or evenings, and making sure callers hear a person before navigating a phone menu.
Trace also shares a campaign result that shows how quickly clear marketing can make a difference. A same-day urgent-care landing page went live on a Wednesday, and by Tuesday the clinic wanted to stop the campaign because it had run out of same-day capacity. We discuss why focused landing pages can help worried pet owners quickly find the service they need, and why clinics should have a plan for both promoting open appointments and pausing campaigns when capacity is full. Finally, we talk about the human side of veterinary marketing: how a doctor's attitude, clinic culture, and the receptionist's first interaction all shape a client's experience. Advertising can bring people to the clinic, but it can't fix every operational problem. The strongest approach connects a relevant ad to a clear page, a helpful conversation, a real person when it matters, and an appointment the clinic can actually provide.

Dr. True shares his journey from associate to entrepreneur, offering practical advice for anyone considering ownership, looking to turn around a struggling clinic, or wanting to elevate their team's performance.

VMP 307: Increase Conversion Rate To Increase Clients
2026/01/23
In this episode, I tackle one of the most overlooked secrets to explosive growth for veterinary practices: mastering conversion, not just chasing more traffic. So often, the advice out there is to post more, run more ads, or just get more eyes on your website. But what if the real game-changer is turning more of your existing visitors into loyal clients? I break down why focusing on conversion optimization is not only the smartest move in today's crowded digital landscape but also the most cost-effective way to double your client base without spending more on ads or content.
We'll walk through the entire veterinary conversion system, from grabbing attention to guiding clients seamlessly to take action. I share the five crucial steps every potential client goes through attention, interest, clarity, trust, and action and highlight where most practices lose people along the way. You'll hear practical strategies for removing friction, building trust, and making your calls to action irresistible and clear. Plus, I cover the most common conversion killers, like having too many calls to action, unclear next steps, and clunky booking experiences, and give you straightforward fixes you can implement right away.
I also dive into what makes a high-converting veterinary landing page, including the four essential elements every page needs: a clear headline, a single strong call to action, fast load times, and mobile-first design. You'll learn when to use a full website versus a focused landing page, and how to audit your own conversion funnel for quick wins. I'll even walk you through how to test your improvements with real traffic and measure what's working, so you can keep refining your approach for even better results.
By the end of this episode, you'll have a step-by-step action plan to pick your highest-traffic page, apply a proven conversion checklist, and start seeing more bookings without increasing your ad spend. Throughout this episode, I break down the key distinctions between attention-based and demand-based marketing, and why understanding your client's journey is the secret sauce to filling your appointment book with the right cases. VMP 302: Build a Referral Machine For Your Veterinary Practice: Scripts, Offers, Tracking, ROI
2025/09/26
In this episode, I wanted to share my comprehensive guide on how to build a world-class referral program for your veterinary practice. Referrals are truly the lifeblood of so many successful clinics, but the reality is that most practices don't have a structured system in place to maximize this powerful growth channel. I'll walk you through why referrals matter so much, the data behind their impact, and — most importantly — how you can create a referral engine that consistently brings in high-quality clients and strengthens your reputation in the community.
We'll start by talking about the foundation: delivering remarkable client experiences that naturally inspire word-of-mouth. I'll share actionable ideas for creating those memorable "wow" moments, from handwritten thank-you notes to personalized video messages and unique welcome gifts. Then, I'll break down how to skillfully and confidently ask for referrals without feeling awkward or "salesy," including scripts and open-ended questions that actually get results. Plus, I'll cover how to make referrals easy and trackable — using everything from referral cards to digital tools and pre-written messages your clients can share with friends.
But it doesn't stop there. I'll dive into designing compelling referral incentives that motivate both your clients and their friends, and I'll show you how to expand your referral network beyond just clients by partnering with local businesses like groomers, trainers, and pet stores. We'll also discuss the importance of following up and recognizing your top referrers, tracking and optimizing your program, and getting your whole team on board for maximum impact. To top it off, I'll share ideas for running referral campaigns and events that really boost engagement and excitement.
By the end of this episode, you'll have a step-by-step blueprint for building a referral program that's not only effective but also sustainable for the long haul. Whether you're just getting started or looking to take your existing program to the next level, you'll find practical strategies you can implement right away. We start by exploring the unique challenges and opportunities facing veterinary practices right now — like how seasonality and economic trends impact client behavior, and why it's crucial to plan your marketing proactively rather than reactively. I share actionable strategies for staying ahead of slow periods, monitoring local trends, and making sure your campaigns are always ready to deploy when you need them most. We also talk about the massive impact of organic social media and video content, especially for reaching Gen Z and Millennial pet owners who are living on platforms like Instagram and TikTok. I give you practical tips for showcasing your practice authentically, testing content organically, and remixing what works to maximize engagement.

Finally, I share insights on outbound marketing, the vital importance of well-trained CSRs, and how to avoid common pitfalls that hold practices back. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by all the marketing options out there, or wondered whether your efforts are actually bringing in new clients, you're not alone. I walk you through the three core functions every veterinary marketing system needs: attracting attention, building trust and credibility, and prompting action. We'll talk about how to get your practice noticed—whether that's through SEO, PPC, social media, or community events—but more importantly, how to move beyond just being seen. I share actionable tips for building genuine trust with pet owners, from leveraging reviews and testimonials to creating educational content and nurturing relationships through email and text sequences.

Plus, I'll show you how to craft irresistible offers that speak directly to your clients' needs, fears, and aspirations, making your marketing not just effective, but genuinely meaningful.
Finally, I'll explain how to leverage AI and social algorithms to your advantage, ensuring your content and ads reach the right people with the right message at the right time.
