570: What's Up 7-Eleven?!
2026/08/05
Frank, Tim, and Vactor from This Comic Cooks have seen Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and they’re bringing you their full review.
⚠️ Full spoilers start around 25:00.
We get into where it lands next to No Way Home, why Destin Daniel Cretton's Shang-Chi fight choreography and the PlayStation games are all over the web-swinging, and whether the new cloth suit is the most comic-accurate Spider-Man we've had on screen. Then the gripes: organic web-shooters vs. Peter's science brain, a Jean Grey who might be a little too mean, the Yelena spa scene, and the eternal question: how does a broke kid in New York afford the rent, the flowers, and that many Little Caesars?
Plus: a debate about theater-crowd etiquette ("on your left" cheerers vs. pin-drop-silence purists), the Hulk-remembers moment, and a villain wishlist that runs from Hobgoblin to the Jackal.
Beers of the Week
Bero Kingston Golden Pils
Bero Spider-Man: Brand New Day x Pils
Sam Adams Summer Ale (2025 vintage)
Special Guest: Vactor.
569: I Want My Piggyback
2026/07/29
Tim and Frank just got back from definitely actually going to San Diego Comic-Con for real life and not pretend. Cheers!
Beers of the Week:

568: I'm Cyclopped
2026/07/22
Frank and Tim pour a drink and break down every reveal, theory, and Easter egg buried in the trailer for Avengers: Doomsday. Cheers!
We get into:
The incursion, and why this is basically the first act of the movie (heroes miscommunicate, then find a bigger threat)
The X-Men leading the cold open: Xavier's school on its last legs and what that window shot means
Doctor Doom in live action for the "fifth" time, and why this one finally feels like it counts
The RDJ voice debate: is that Downey under the mask, and does it matter if Doom just happens to have Tony's face?
Crossover money shots Marvel wants you to care about (Shang-Chi vs. Gambit) and the ones that actually land
Thor vs. Doom, and the magic rune on Doom's gauntlet that might belong to Wanda
The Hydra Cap theory: how is a long-haired, bearded Steve worthy of Mjolnir?
Is that Loki shot really pulled from the show? And is Doom collecting kids?
The Kang problem nobody at Marvel wants to say out loud
Where's Spider-Man, and why he's probably being saved for Secret Wars and Battleworld
Tickets already selling out and a teaser that cleared 500 million views in a week
What we're drinking: Frank's on a Sam Adams Blueberry Lager (Red, White & Blueberry). Tim is drinking WhistlePig PiggyBack rye out of a porcelain Doctor Doom head he's had since childhood, whose brains have apparently been replaced by whiskey.
Next week: San Diego Comic-Con hype (and yeah, we still owe you Lois & Clark).

567: Magic Jungle Potion
2026/07/15
Tim and Frank take on a deceptively simple question: is Spider-Man actually a street-level superhero? What starts as a debate about subgenres turns into a much bigger conversation — about tone, stakes, and whether the label helps or hurts a character when your hero is literally swinging above the street.
Beers of the Week
Sam Adams Porch Rocker Lemon Radler (Frank)
Stormalong Legendary Dry Hard Cider — Millis, MA (Tim)
In this episode
Sam Adams Porch Rocker returns — the annual visit, and this year it's slightly less tart (in a good way)
Sam Adams's new can design — Sam covering his own letters with a raised mug (or is that Paul Revere? or Thomas Jefferson?)
Stormalong dry cider, heirloom + bittersweet apples, and the cracking-tentacles Kraken can
H.P. Lovecraft geography detour: Providence vs. Newport, the racism asterisk, where Arkham actually came from
The main question: is Spider-Man a street-level superhero at all?
Defining street-level: it's about the tone and the stakes, not the powers — Daredevil pounds the tar, Batman is technically anything but blue-collar
Peter Parker's sci-fi problem: his origin is basically Fantastic Four, the web shooters make him genius-tier, and Frank once asked his dad to build a pair
Kraven the Hunter's magic jungle potion goes golfing
A live tally of Spider-Man's rogues gallery — chameleon, vulture, Doc Ock, Sandman, Lizard, Electro, Mysterio, Green Goblin, Kraven, Scorpion, Morbius, Venom — and where each one lands on street / middle / cosmic
The verdict: 5 street, 6 in-between, 1 cosmic — Spider-Man's distribution skews low-end, but he's genuinely hard to pin down
"Spider-Man is a street-level hero the same way Breaking Bad is a show about a chemistry teacher." — the Breaking Bad Test
Why pigeonholing hurts long-lived characters, and why the supporting cast is really what makes a hero viable
Reading from Superman: The Never-Ending Battle by Roger Stern — Clark Kent finally becomes Superman across an entire beautiful page of prose

566: Nobody Wants to See That on Camera
2026/07/08
Frank and Tim both showed up in green. Neither planned it. They discuss the trailer for the upcoming Green Lantern TV series Lanterns (2026). Cheers!
Beers of the Week
Sam Adams Winter Lager
Two Pitchers Nordic Jam
565: Hop On the Magic Space Bus
2026/07/01
Frank and Tim grab a couple of citrus wheat ales and head to the theater for Supergirl, the DCU's next step after Superman. The verdict: liked it, didn't love it — an earnest, surprisingly un-cynical B-movie with a great cast, gorgeous practical aliens, and a message clearly aimed at kids it's frankly too dark to show them. Along the way: the Casablanca clue, Lobo done right, and a genuinely unhinged detour into Augustine vs. Aquinas. Cheers!
Beers of the Week
Sam Adams Summer Ale
Harpoon UFO White

563: A Roided Hutt
2026/05/27
Frank and Tim return to the galaxy far, far away to talk through The Mandalorian and Grogu, a Star Wars movie that knows exactly what it is: a fun, self-contained, Saturday-morning adventure with space western vibes, Indiana Jones structure, James Bond mission energy, and some very mobile Hutts. Cheers!
Beers of the Week
Saison Dupont Belgian Farmhouse Ale
Stoneface Brewing Sunday Sauce Italian Pils
Canada Dry Cherry Fruit Splash Ginger Ale
564: A Caring Mouth
2026/05/20
Frank and Tim crack open some drinks and attempt the noble, impossible task of ranking sci-fi franchises without accidentally starting six different side conversations. Star Wars and Star Trek go straight into S-tier, Dune gets surprisingly close to sacred-text status, and Tim is reminded that he watched Tron: Legacy for the podcast nine years ago and fully forgot.
