“He’s Just Not That Into You” The 2004 Liz Tuccillo & Greg Behrendt Book Vs the 2009 Jennifer Aniston Film
2025/10/17
Book Vs. Movie: “He’s Just Not That Into You” The 2004 Liz Tuccillo & Greg Behrendt Book Vs the 2009 Jennifer Aniston FilmPicture it: the Sex and the City writer’s room. Writers Liz Tuccillo & Greg Behrendt overhear a female coworker asking for relationship advice (at work, but that’s another issue for another time) about guy she’s been seeing. After hearing a litany of red flags, Behrendt pipes up with, “He’s just not that into you.” And thus was born an empire. It’s the quip that became an episode on a hit HBO show that became a bestselling, Oprah-featured, self-help book that became a movie. Seems like many were into the “He’s Just Not That Into You” universe. But were we? In our first episode back after losing our dear friend and co-host, Margo D, Margo P and special Guest Host, Sonia Mansfield of What a Creep have MUCH to say about how this has all held up, or not, over the last two decades. Have a listen to find out!In this episode, we discuss: The backstory of “the quip”The differences between the book and movie. The cast includes: Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Connelly, Kevin Connolly, Bradley Cooper, Ginnifer Goodwin, Scarlett Johansson, Krist Kristofferson, and Justin Long Follow us on the socials! Goldfinger (1964) Ian Fleming, Sean Connery, Gert Frobe & Honor Blackman
2025/07/20
Book Vs. Movie: “Goldfinger”  The 1959 Ian Fleming Novel Vs the 1964 Sean Connery Film Ian Fleming’s Goldfinger (1959) and its 1964 film adaptation featuring Sean Connery present one of James Bond’s most iconic villains, but in very different styles. The novel is a gritty Cold War spy thriller, showcasing a vulnerable Bond who relies on his wits rather than gadgets. Goldfinger’s scheme centers on a traditional gold heist from Fort Knox, with P***y Galore leading a lesbian criminal gang, creating a darker tone.  In contrast, the film, directed by Guy Hamilton, turns the story into flashy pop entertainment. Goldfinger's plan involves irradiating gold with a dirty bomb, and P***y is reimagined as a glamorous pilot who falls in love with Bond. Connery’s 007 is suave and nearly invincible, complete with a gadget-loaded Aston Martin DB5.Between the novel and the movie, which did the Margos like better? Have a listen to find out!  In this episode, the Margos discuss: The life of Ian Fleming and Sean Connery’s BondThe differences between the book and movie. The cast includes: Sean Connery (James Bond), Gert Frobe (Auric Goldfinger), Honor Blackman (P***y Galore), Shirley Eaton (Jill Masterson), Bernard Lee (M), Harold Sakata (Oddjob), Martin Benson (Solo), Tania Mallet (Tilly), and Lois Maxwell as Moneypenny. Clips Featured: “Oddjob”Goldfinger (1964 trailer)“P***y Galore and her gals”Shirley Bassey 1974 (Royal Albert Hall)“I expect you to do Mr. Bond”Music by John Barry Follow us on the socials! 2025/07/13
Book Vs. Movie: “The Girl Can’t Help It”  The Garson Kanin Play Vs. the Jayne Mansfield Movie The 1956 Technicolor film The Girl Can’t Help It is often remembered for Jayne Mansfield’s curves and Little Richard’s title song, but it originated from Garson Kanin's short story Do Re Mi. This satirical piece critiques the music industry and the manufactured nature of fame, suggesting that anyone can become a star with enough money and manipulation. Directed by Frank Tashlin, the film follows a down-on-his-luck music manager (Tom Ewell) hired by a mobster (Edmond O’Brien) to turn his disinterested girlfriend (Mansfield) into a music sensation. Between the short story and the movie, which did the Margos like better? Alice's Restaurant (1969) Arlo Guthrie, Arthur Penn, Pat Quinn, & James Broderick
2025/07/01
Book Vs. Movie: “Alice’s Restaurant”  Arlo Guthrie’s 1967 18-minute Song Vs the 1969 Movie Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant” is an 18-minute satirical folk monologue and song that became an anthem for the 1960s counterculture. Officially titled “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree,” it was released in 1967 on his debut album.  The piece tells a true, albeit embellished, story from Thanksgiving 1965 about a littering arrest that prevented Guthrie from being drafted into the Vietnam War. Blending comedy and protest, the song critiques authority and the military draft system, recounting how disposing of garbage with a friend led to an arrest, which ironically disqualified him from military service. In this episode, the Margos discuss: The career of Arlo GuthrieThe story behind the songThe differences between the song & movie. The cast includes: Arlo Guthrie (as himself), Pat Quinn (Alice Brock), James Broderick (Ray Brock), Pete Seeger (as himself), Joseph Boley (Woody Guthrie), M. "Pride and Prejudice" & 2022's "Fire Island" Joel Kim Booster, Bowen Yang, Margaret Cho & Jane Austen
2025/06/22
Book Vs. Movie:  For Pride Month 1813’s “Pride and Prejudice”  Vs. 2022's "Fire Island" June is Pride Month worldwide, and the Margos are excited to celebrate with some of the best LGBTQIA-centric books and movies. One highlight is the 2022 film *Fire Island*, directed by Andrew Ahn and written by Joel Kim Booster. This clever and heartfelt adaptation reimagines Jane Austen’s *Pride and Prejudice*.  Set during a weeklong summer vacation on the iconic queer retreat of Fire Island, the story follows a close-knit group of gay friends as they navigate romance, class, and identity. Joel Kim Booster plays Noah, a modern-day Elizabeth Bennet figure, while Bowen Yang portrays Howie, who is loosely based on Jane Bennet. The aloof and wealthy Will, played by Conrad Ricamora, serves as the counterpart to Mr. Darcy. Between the classic Austen book and the modern, gay-friendly film, which did we prefer? Have a listen to find out! In this episode, the Margos discuss: The sheer number of Pride Month books we have covered and how they have changed over the last ten yearsThe history of Austen and Fire Island. The differences between the book & movie. The cast includes: Joel Kim Booster (Noah), Bowen Yang (Howie), Conrad Ricamora (Will), James Scully (Charlie), Margaret Cho (Mr. & Mrs. Bennet), Matt Rogers (Luke), and Nick Adams as Cooper. Clips Featured: “Marisa Tomei”Fire Island (2022 trailer) “I’m a doctor.”“The dance off scene”Music by Jay WadleyFollow us on the socials! The Mirror Crack'd (1980) Agatha Christie, Miss Marple, Angela Lansbury, Elizabeth Taylor & Rock Hudson
2025/06/01
Book Vs. Movie: The Mirror Crack’d The 1962 Agatha Christie Novel  Vs the 1980 Movie When Agatha Christie published The Mirror Crack’d from Side to Side in 1962, it was a haunting tale of guilt, glamour, and murder set in the seemingly quiet village of St. Mary Mead. Nearly two decades later, Hollywood brought the story to life with an all-star cast in the 1980 film adaptation simply titled The Mirror Crack’d.  Heather Badcock at a charity fête hosted by the famous film actress Marina Gregg. The drink was meant for Marina, but someone else paid the price. With classic Christie flair, Miss Jane Marple quietly unravels a decades-old motive involving trauma, maternal grief, and a long-buried secret.
