The highly anticipated second season of Invincible premieres November 3rd on Prime Video. We sat down with Executive Producer and Co-Showrunner Simon Racioppa to talk about what audiences can expect for Season 2. Based on the popular comic book series by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley, the story follows 18-year-old Mark Grayson (voiced bySteven Yeun), an ordinary teenager except for his father, Nolan, who was the strongest superhero on Earth. After Nolan's betrayal in the first season, Mark struggles to rebuild his life and face new threats, all while battling his greatest fear: becoming his father. The series stars Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, Zazie Beetz, Gillian Jacobs, and J.K. Simmons. "Working in television, I like to always try to have one big idea per season that we keep in the back of our minds." He goes on to explain "In season one, it was that Mark wanted to become his father. It's like, what if the father you wanted to become turned out to be a terrible person, The person you idolized your entire life turns out to be the worst person in the world. And what would that do to you? And how would that change you? So that was kind of the thought for season one." Steven Yeun (Mark Grayson/Invincible) He also breaks down what fans can expect from the new season "Season two, to me, the kind of logical next theme that we sort of talk about was, okay, you wanted to be your dad your entire life. What if that happens now? You know, you've discovered your dad's a terrible person." Exploring Different Characters in "Invincible" Season 2 The show revolves around 18-year-old Mark Grayson who plays the Titular character Invincible. But we were curious to know if Racioppa thinks any of the season one characters were underserved that he'd like to explore more in Season 2. Steven Yeun (Mark Grayson), Sandra Oh (Debbie Grayson) Racioppa told us " Obviously, we spent a lot of time with Debbie in season two, you know, with Sandra. And also when you have Sandra Oh, you put Sandra Oh on screen. I'd be derelict in my duties if we did not put her on screen as much. But no, she's an incredible character and she's an important character. She was married to Nolan for 20 years. Like, how could we not show you what that does to a person in their lives? I think it would be it would seem like the biggest hole in the show if we didn't spend a lot of time with Debbie." The second season of Invincible premieres November 3rd on Prime Video.

A new graphic novel From the Darkness by Alexandrea Callaghan takes women-based monsters from folklore and turns them into superheroes. A Kickstarter campaign for the comic begins on October 1st.  https://youtu.be/bwAhGywLOow "From The Darkness" From the Darkness is a new comic book that follows four teenage girls learning how to control their hormones, relationships, and their newfound powers. In a world that condemns teenage girls for existing Babs, Kia, Lupa and Lilith use their powers to fight monsters and stereotypes.  "From The Darkness" The story takes inspiration from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Paper Girls and hopes to contribute to coming-of-age media for young women. The story is set in a modern-day small town that occasionally experiences weird and disturbing occurrences. As the young heroines come into their powers and have the means to stop these occurrences, they feel compelled to help. Turning teenage girls into superheroes Writer and creator Alexandrea Callaghan told us about her inspiration for the comic book. "So it's called From the Darkness, and it follows four teenage girls that with puberty and growing up, are also getting full glory and base powers that they have to learn how to manage and deal with. And eventually, you know, they're all thrown together and they end up fighting monsters and everything. So it's very Buffy the Vampire Slayer-esq. It mostly just focuses on challenging stereotypes and figuring out who you are as a person and how you fit into the world. I feel like specifically in film and TV, but a little bit in comic books, too. There aren't that many stories that are coming-of-age stories for young girls. And so that's something that I really wanted to contribute." She goes on to say "The thing that excites me the most about writing this book is I think teenage girls are villainized for just about everything they do. They can't like anything without it being called into question or being called stupid or, you know. They get reduced no matter what they do. There's no winning being a teenage girl. So I think within teenage girls' powers to fight monsters, all of their powers are based in folklore, monsters that are based on women like their women monsters. And I think that helps kind of fight back a little bit. And it's very much coming from like the internal high school angst that high school Alex felt a little more, you know, I'm fighting previous Alex's depression for myself through this story." The 9th annual Her Universe Fashion Show is free for San Diego Comic-Con attendees, and all ages are welcome. The event will celebrate 100 Years of Disney and feature a geek couture fashion competition. Check-in begins at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 20th, with doors open at 4:15 PM. In past years, fans have lined up for hours before the show to try and get a good seat. By the time last year’s event started, there was only standing room left. I definitely recommend showing up for check-in at 11 am. And be sure to get in line early for a good seat. Interview with Ashley Eckstein Jenna Wrenn spoke to Ashley Eckstein about the origins of the Her Universe Fashion Show and the impact it has had on both the contestants and fans. https://youtu.be/h-pGGbg423s Where it all started Jenna Wrenn: How did this journey begin for you? What did it look like at the very beginning? Ashley Eckstein: Well, as with everything with Her Universe and with my own kind of personal journey, it's always been inspired by the fans, sometimes my own personal fandom, and sometimes by, you know, the fan community. And the Her Universe Fashion Show was directly inspired by the fans. I've been going to San Diego Comic-Con since 2007, and over the years I was just absolutely in awe and inspired by these one-of-a-kind couture-level looks that fans would create and walk the halls of San Diego Comic-Con, showcasing these looks. Ashley: And, you know, this wasn't cosplay. These were couture-level fashion looks and so I was like, you know, what a shame that, you know, the fans don't have an actual runway to showcase these couture designs on. And so it became my dream to create a fashion show straight out of New York Fashion Week for fans to showcase their couture-level designs on. And so I wanted to create a competition-style show where we pick, you know, winners. But also anyone who participates in our show can learn and have real professional opportunities given to them because of our show. And so it's wildly exceeded my expectations over the years, how fans have, you know, literally been given professional opportunities with her universe and hot topic. And they've also gotten jobs with studios like Disney because of our show. It's just something I'm very, very proud of and very grateful that the legacy continues. Jenna: As you look back on your journey with the show, what are some of the things that stand out for you? Ashley: I think the things that stand out for me with the whole universe fashion show, continuing with what I just shared is the fact that our show is truly changed lives. And I don't say that lightly. You know, our show is open to everyone, whether you're an up-and-coming or professional designer or whether you're just a fan who does fashion design as a hobby, you know, the runway is open to everyone. A contestant walks the runway during the Her Universe Fashion Show in 2019 Ashley: And, you know, our show has literally changed so many lives with the designers who have participated, You know, several designers who are doing fashion design as a hobby have gone on to change their careers and become professional fashion designers. Some of them are working on shows that are on Disney Plus, some are now working for, you know, Disney merchandise or, you know, Universal. Ashley: And they're actually doing it professionally. You know, several designers put the Her Universe Fashion Show on their resumé, and it means something. It matters. It gives a level of credibility that helps them get jobs professionally in the industry. So to see that our show has built up a reputation where it's actually, you know, changing lives for these designers is incredibly humbling. And again, it's all I ever wanted. You know, I just wanted to create opportunity. And, you know, our show continues to do that. And it's something I'm extremely proud of.

There are passionate scenes between characters who love and sometimes hate one another are plenty. There is also the excitement of the will they won’t they scenarios. The societal shift that takes place in the series highlights the inequity and hardships that many of the characters faced. There is a sadness that you feel towards characters who are still longing for inclusivity in this society. As well as that for characters whose illnesses are not properly understood. Hardships for these characters come in many forms, but most seem to stem from patriarchal ideas that are rooted in misogyny. And of course, a major part of the series is the look into the issues rooted in racism and classism.
