“God Is in the Dark Room” John 4v24 [13th Sept 2026]
2026/09/16
Evening Bible teaching by Alex Vaca on the 13th September 2026. TEACHING NOTES: John 4:24: “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. Main truth- When we cannot see God, he is still present. God is invisible, but he is not absent. 1. God is invisible- but completely real God is spirit, not a physical being or part of the created universe. We may not see him, but we can trust his presence. 2. God is personal- not an impersonal force God speaks, knows, loves, commands and forgives. Through Jesus, believers know him as their Father. 3. God cannot be contained God does not live only in a church building. He is present in our homes, workplaces, suffering and darkest moments. 4. God cannot be hidden from His presence comforts the suffering believer but warns the secret sinner. Nothing is concealed from him. 5. God has revealed himself through Jesus Jesus is “the image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1:15). To know what God is like, we must look at Christ. 6. God must be worshipped in spirit and truth True worship is more than attending church or singing songs. It comes from a heart awakened by the Holy Spirit and shaped by God’s truth.
“I’m Fine, Thanks” Revelation 3v14-22 [13th Sept 2026]
2026/09/14
Bible teaching by Thomas Abbott on the 13th September 2026. TEACHING NOTES: The Laodicean church thought they had it all sorted. But Jesus knew better. The book of Revelation begins with John ‘in the spirit on the Lord’s day’ (Revelation 1:10), receiving a vision of the risen Jesus. Jesus instructs John to write to seven churches, speaking directly into their spiritual condition. In his letter to the Laodicean church, after reminding them of who he is, Jesus exposes their pride and self-reliance. Yet he doesn’t leave them there. Jesus offers them what they lack, reminds them that his correction comes from a place of love, calls them to repent, and invites them back into fellowship with him. The message is challenging, but ultimately hopeful. Pride says, “I’m fine, thanks.” But Jesus loves us enough to tell us when we’re not - and by grace offers what we cannot provide for ourselves.
“Jesus’ Presence: Restoration” John 21 [6th Sept 2026]
2026/09/10
In the Presence of the Lord There is Restoration. If you could go back in time to another point in your life, what would you change, what wrong would you right? For Peter, he’d just denied Jesus at his moment of greatest need, having only just a few hours before declared his undying allegiance towards him. What a humiliation this must have been, and what he might have given to have had the chance to go back and change it. Unfortunately we don’t have time machines and we can’t go back and change the past. But we do have a saviour, who lifts us up after we’ve failed. This week at Hillcrest we’ll be looking at John 21, a moment that dealt with Peter’s greatest failure and reconfirmed him as one of Jesus’ greatest servants as we see that In the Presence of Jesus there is Restoration. Evening Bible teaching by Jonny Hall on the 6th September 2026.
“When God’s Patience Reaches Its Limit” Amos 7v1-9 [6th Sept 2026]
2026/09/08
Bible teaching by Alex Vaca on the 6th September 2026. TEACHING NOTES: 1. God warns before He judges - verses 1-3 • God showed Amos a vision of locusts devouring Israel’s crops. • God’s warnings are expressions of mercy, calling us to repent while there is still time. 2. God responds to prayer - verses 4-6 • Amos then saw a consuming fire threatening the land. • Once again, Amos prayed for Israel. Once again, God relented. 3. God measures His people - verses 7-9 • In the third vision, God stood beside a wall holding a plumb line. • The plumb line revealed whether the wall was straight or crooked. • Israel appeared prosperous and religious, but God’s standard exposed its true condition. • We must measure our lives by God’s Word, not by culture or comparison with others. 4. God’s patience must not be mistaken for approval • Israel continued sinning because judgment did not come immediately. • They assumed their prosperity meant that God was pleased with them. • But delayed judgment did not mean cancelled judgment. God’s patience gives us time to repent; it does not give us permission to continue in sin. 5. The opportunity to repent will not remain forever • Amos prayed after the first two visions, but he was silent after the third. • God declared: “I will never again pass by them.” The warning had now become the verdict. • God’s supply of grace is not limited, but the opportunity to receive His mercy will not remain open forever. 6. Jesus is our only hope God is patient and merciful, but His warnings must be taken seriously. Do not wait until the warning becomes the verdict. Turn to Christ while there is still time.
“Misunderstanding the Mystery” Psalm 2 [30th Aug 2026]
2026/09/02
Evening Bible teaching by Evan Denison on the 30th August 2026. Why do we rebel against God? What is it that humankind just doesn’t seem to get? Psalm 2 shows us a world in upheaval, raging against their Just and Loving Lord — yet it points ahead to a greater reconciliation than we could imagine…
“Blindsided by Good Theology” James 1:19-27 [30th Aug 2026]
2026/09/01
Bible teaching by Jonny Hall on the 30th August 2026. TEACHING NOTES Point 1: Good Theology Comes from Loving God’s Word • We must be a people with soft ears (v19) • We must be a people with soft hearts (v20) • We must be a people marked by humility (v21) Point 2: Good Theology Alone is Insufficient • We must be a people who do the word (v22-23) • We must be a people who are challenged by the word (v24) • We must be a people who are changed by the word (v25) Point 3: Good Theology Must Be Spirit Empowered • We must be a people flowing with living water (v26) • We must be a people who care (v27a) • We must be a people who are set apart (v27b)
“Our Hope above all Hope” Micah 7v8-20 [23rd Aug 2026]
2026/08/24
Bible teaching by Thomas Abbott on the 23rd August 2026. TEACHING NOTES: In Micah 7:8 we read: Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the Lord will be my light. (NIV) That is Micah’s hope, both for Israel and for himself. Israel’s circumstances gave Micah little reason for hope. Instead, the concluding verses of Micah reveal that his hope was based entirely on the character of God - the God who pardons sin, delights in mercy and remains faithful to his promises. But what Micah could see only as a glimmer of light, we see fully revealed in Jesus Christ – our Hope above all hope.
The Lord's Prayer: If God is sovereign, why pray? [16th August 2026]
2026/08/19
What does it mean to ask that his will be done on earth as it is in heaven? What even is the will of God?
"When Life Breaks Down, Look to God" Micah 6v9-7v7 [16th Aug 2026]
2026/08/17
Main Idea: When everything around us seems to be falling apart, God calls us to see sin seriously, trust His justice, grieve what is broken, and ultimately look to Him for salvation. Bible teaching by Alex Vaca on the 16th August 2026. TEACHING NOTES: JUSTICE - God Sees What Others Don't (9-12) • “The voice of the LORD cries to the city…” - Micah 6:9 • God cares about what happens in everyday life-not only in worship, but in our work, money, relationships, business and integrity. JUDGMENT - We Eventually Reap What We Sow (13-16) • “Therefore I strike you… because of your sins.” - Micah 6:13 • God's judgment is not random. It is His righteous response to persistent rebellion. LAMENTATION - Grieve What Sin Destroys (1-6) • “Woe is me!” - Micah 7:1 • Micah does not celebrate the collapse of his society. • He grieves. • God's people should never enjoy watching people destroy themselves. HOPE - LOOK TO GOD (7:7) • Then everything changes: “But as for me…” • Micah cannot control his culture. He cannot control the leaders. He cannot control his neighbours. He cannot control his circumstances. • But he can decide where he will look. “I will look to the LORD.”
“Water into Wine” John 2v1-11 [9th August 2026]
2026/08/12
Evening Bible teaching by Sammy Arthur on the 9th August 2026. TEACHING NOTES: Have you every wondered when reading about Jesus turning water into wine: Why Cana? Why Wine? Why a wedding? Come and see how Jesus is the true and better bridegroom, the best saved for last and how He chooses to do something supernatural amidst the ordinary (John 2:1-11).
“Peace for the Doubting Heart” John 20v29 [9th Aug 2026]
2026/08/12
Big Idea: Jesus does not reject those who honestly struggle with doubt; He graciously strengthens their faith through His presence and His Word, leading them from doubt to worship. Bible teaching by Alex Vaca on the 9th August 2026. TEACHING NOTES: Honest Doubt Can Lead Us to Christ- John 20:24–25 • Thomas missed Jesus' first appearance. • Isolation often makes doubt grow. • Thomas wanted certainty before believing. His struggle was understandable after the crucifixion. Jesus Meets Doubters with Mercy- John 20:26–28 • Jesus patiently waited for Thomas. • He knew Thomas' doubts before Thomas spoke. • Christ offered evidence, not condemnation. Blessed Are Those Who Believe Without Seeing- John 20:29–31 • Future believers would know Christ through Scripture. • John's Gospel was written to produce faith. Fight Doubt with Faith- Romans 10:17 /2 Corinthians 5:7 • Faith grows through God's Word. • We walk by faith, not by sight. • God's promises are stronger than our feelings. Trust God When You Don't Understand- Romans 11:33 • Not every question will be answered in this life. • Faith trusts God's character when His ways remain hidden. • God is working even when we cannot see Him.
“When Life Doesn’t Feel Good” [2nd August 2026]
2026/08/05
Evening Bible teaching by Alex Vaca on the 2nd August 2026. TEACHING NOTES: 1. God is Good • God's goodness is not just something He does; it is who He is. • Everything God does flows from His perfect character. • Key Verse: Psalm 119:68 – "You are good and do good." 2. What Does "Taste" Mean? • Hebrew: ṭāʿam – to experience, try, or know personally. • God invites us to experience His goodness, not merely know about it. • Christianity is more than information- it is a relationship. 3. What Does It Mean to "See"? • As we experience God, we begin to recognise His goodness. • We learn to view life through God's character rather than our circumstances. • Faith grows through personal experience with God's faithfulness. 4. How Do We Taste God's Goodness? • Trust His Word. • Obey Him even when it is difficult. • Pray and depend on Him. • Run to Him in every circumstance and receive His grace through Jesus Christ. 5. God's Goodness Does Not Mean a Trouble-Free Life • "Many are the afflictions of the righteous..." (Psalm 34:19). • God's promise is not the absence of suffering but His presence and deliverance. • God is with His people in every trial. 6. The Cross Is the Greatest Display of God's Goodness • God's goodness is seen most clearly in Jesus Christ. • At the cross, justice and mercy meet. • Romans 5:8 – "God demonstrates His own love toward us..." 7. Taking Refuge in the Lord • Refuge means resting in God's protection, promises, and salvation. • Christ is our ultimate refuge.
“Forgetting God” Micha 6 v1-8 [2nd Aug 2026]
2026/08/03
Bible teaching by Jonny Hall on the 2nd August 2026. TEACHING NOTES: Point 1: Remember His Majesty (v1-3) • God reminds Israel of who they’re dealing with • Familiarity can cause us to fall into complacency • Creation bears witness to His majesty Point 2: Remember His Faithfulness (v4-5) • Forgetting God’s faithfulness hinders worship • God reminds Israel of 3 situations of his faithfulness • God saved, blessed and delivered his people Point 3: Remember His Requirements (v6-8) • Forgetting God can result in religious behaviour • God needs nothing from us • God wants us to walk with him in love
