We’re playing a drawing game (don’t worry if you’re not great at drawing. I’m not good at it either!), having a fun talk about our 5 senses and what we experience at the beach, and I’ve got some jokes that I think you’re going to like at the end of the episode! Everything is beach themed so put your sunglasses on and pretend like your feet are covered in sand. Surfs up dudes! Episode Game - Now Switch Hands Drawing Game For this game, you're going to need a couple of pieces of clean paper and a writing utensil. Your paper can be a piece of paper from a notebook or the back of a handout or flyer. For your writing utensil, you can use a pencil or a crayon. Here's how it works: I will give you instructions for something to write or draw. Make sure that you're paying attention because I'll call out, "Now Switch Hands!" and you have to switch hands and keep drawing or writing. That means if you started working with your right hand, then you have to switch to working with your left hand! Or if you started working with your left hand then you have to switch to working with your right hand. If you finish a prompt before I give the signal to move on, just start over and keep on going! Conversation Activity - Engaging The 5 Senses At The Beach Did you know that when you engage your 5 senses you have even more fun!! When you are aware of what you’re smelling, seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, and smelling you are not only learning more about the world, but you will remember things more clearly. School is out, the weather is warm, and it is SUMMER TIME, my friends! Let’s get excited about all that summer magic together! So if you like swimming, pool side snacks, and clapping or snapping, you’re going to love this episode! Going to the pool is the ultimate summer activity in my opinion. You’re outside in the sun playing as hard as you can. There is just something so magical about swimming and playing in the water! This episode is all about how much fun we can have playing outside! We’re talking about things to do, why it’s good for us to play outside, and everyone will have the chance to think about and talk about something special that they would like to do when playing outside together!  If you like getting dirty, running around, or making art – this episode is for you!  Playing outside is one of the best parts about being a kid.  Now, we’ve got the obvious playing outside activities - riding bikes, roller blading, riding scooters, playing basketball in the driveway, but I want us to talk about other things we can do to have fun outside! See some specific ideas on alongfortheride.info, Did you know that playing outside is good for you?  Yeah, it’s one of the healthiest choices you can make for yourself!  You’re using your brain and imagination to come up with things to do.  You’re improving your overall coordination by climbing and exploring.  You’re getting stronger. Think about how your whole body is involved when you’re swinging or riding a scooter! The truth is kids need time outside and when you make special time to all be outside together, it's not only good for the kids, but good for EVERYONE!  Also, something you might not know is that being outside in the sunshine can improve your mood! Isn’t that fascinating? Here is a special Thanksgiving-themed episode for you this week! We're playing 2 Thanksgiving games - "Oh Yeah No Way" and a Thanksgiving Trivia game! We're also discussing specific ways that kids can show gratitude in their actions during your family Thanksgiving Day festivities. We hope you enjoy this episode!  Happy Thanksgiving Week! I thought it would be a fun idea to do a special episode for the week of Thanksgiving! I hope that you’re listening as you are driving to a family member’s house. Or maybe you’re doing a destination Thanksgiving celebration!  Whatever you’re doing or wherever you’re going, I’m glad that you’re listening! Along For the Ride is all about having fun and making memories as a family. We can do that in the car!  Kids Car Game - Oh Yeah! No Way! For our main game today, we’re going to play Oh Yeah! No Way! How this works is that I’ll read out something Thanksgiving-related and you’ll share your reaction. “Oh Yeah” if you like it, “Oh No” if you don’t like it. Easy right?! 4 Ways Kids Can Help on Thanksgiving In episode 17, we talked about showing our gratitude and what that means. If you have some extra time, go listen to that episode for a springboard into a gratitude discussion! In the previous episode, we talked about saying what we’re grateful for out loud.  This week we’re going to talk about actions you can take to show gratitude. The actions we take can show our gratitude.  Here are some suggestions that kids can do before, during, and after your Thanksgiving meal to show their gratitude:  Offer to help in the kitchen. You could butter the rolls,  stir the mashed potatoes, or put ice in the drinking glasses! If someone gives you a task, say yes with a smile! Your helpfulness will go a long way! Offer to help set the table.Don’t make yucky faces if you don’t like something you tasted. You don’t have to like everything or eat everything, but try your best not to show it on your face if you don’t like the way something tastes.Instead of immediately running off to play or do something else, offer to help clean up. Ask your parents how you can help clean up your plateI believe that small actions can make big impacts.  Kids Car Game - Thanksgiving True or False I’ve got one more activity for us before we wrap today’s episode. Let’s play a good ole fashioned game of True or False. I’ll share a statement and you’ll say out loud whether you think that statement is true or false. Easy enough! Here we go! During this episode, we’re going to play a game that will challenge us to listen and pay close attention! It’s all about repeating patterns. We’re also discussing gratitude as we prepare for Thanksgiving next week! Hello everyone!! I’m JJ and I’m just thrilled to bring you another episode of the Along for the Ride Podcast! It’s our mission to help families have fun and make memories while riding in the car! I believe that there is always an opportunity to have fun and that things are more enjoyable when we look up and play together!  Kids Car Game - Pattern Replication I’ve got a brand new game for us that’s going to test your memory. Let’s see just how well you can repeat a given pattern. I’m calling this game Repeat After Me. We will play a few different rounds where I’ll give you a pattern and you’ll repeat it back. It might be words. It might be sounds. It might be numbers. It might be claps or stomps! You’ll have to pay close attention so you can get it right.  Also, try to do it exactly as I do. If I clap softly, you clap softly.  Here’s an example. If I say, “Apple Pie. Pumpkin Bread. Bonfire. Fried Turkey. Gobble Gobble” then you would say, “Apple Pie. Pumpkin Bread. Bonfire. Fried Turkey. Gobble Gobble” Easy, right? You can tell that I’ve got Thanksgiving on my mind!  I think this was one of my favorite games! Thank you so much for playing along! You can play this game anywhere. The next time you’re out and about and need an activity to pass the time, play this game with your friends and take turns making up the patterns!  Talking about Gratitude with Kids This episode is airing the week before Thanksgiving. This is one of the most special times of the year! You’ve got a break from school coming, you’re making your Christmas lists, maybe your family is like mine and you’ve already got your Christmas decorations out! With all the excitement of December coming, I want to encourage you to not miss out on the joy and the meaning of Thanksgiving.  Thanksgiving is all about gratitude. Gratitude is being thankful for the things that you have - a place to live, food on the table, clothes to wear. How can you show gratitude to the people you love? What are some things you can do or say? Can you think of something right now? Say it out loud!  Gratitude also comes out in our attitude. When you think about what you are grateful for, it is an instant mood lifter! The next time you feel angry or sad, think about the things you are most grateful for. List them out in your mind or on a piece of paper. Just see what happens!  You can even make a game out of it! Try to see how many things you can say that you are grateful for! And by the way, we can show gratitude all year, not just on Thanksgiving!  Hey Parents, I found an interesting article on VeryWellMind.Com on how to teach gratitude to kids. The Along for the Ride show is a special experience that focuses on families having fun together and making memories.
