It worships the divine Mother Kali, the divine love. Mata means "mother". This mother is "Durge." The power from the mother of the universe (Kundalini). The goddess who overcomes all, overcomes everything bad. And supports others to create it. The divine mother who gives security and helps everyone. Om is the primal sound of the cosmos. You can expand the mantra with "Kali Durge Namo Namaha". This means something like as the worship of Mother Kali. "Om Mata Kali Om Mata Durge Kali Durge Namo Namaha". In summary, it reads something like, "Oh, Kali you divine mother. You are everywhere and protect me from danger. I worship you." As with all mantras, the exact translation is not crucial.
