Moment #57: Change Only Hurts When It’s Irrational
2024/02/25
Moment #57 // Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution is often summarized as: the survival of the fittest. But, in fact, Darwin’s conclusion was that those who survive aren’t necessarily the fittest – they are the most adaptable. As a leader, one of your most valuable characteristics is your capacity for change. Change is constant. But many of us don’t cope with it particularly well. We often struggle to understand the change that we’re asked to adapt to in our work lives… and what we don’t understand, we fear.  If change isn’t rational, it can leave a workforce cynical and disengaged. This is labeled as change fatigue. But even when the intent and substance of the change is sound, it’s often undermined by poor leadership. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.119: Change Fatigue. ———————— FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career! The Accidental Leader: It’s the most common variety
2024/02/20
Episode #286 // Many people in leadership positions were promoted because they were good at their jobs — their technical jobs. When ambitious professionals want the status, the power, and the money that come with career advancement, they have to accept that leading other people comes with the territory. With little leadership training, and even less desire to lead, they become ‘accidental’ leaders. So, I was interested when I came across an article in Fortune magazine: Nearly all bosses are ‘accidental’ with no formal training—and research shows it’s leading 1 in 3 workers to quit.   The fact that the vast majority of leaders and managers don’t receive any formal training isn’t particularly surprising… and the fact that workers are disgruntled with their managers is even less so.   It’s easy to read the headlines and accept them without question. In this episode, I take a peek behind the curtain to get to some better root cause analysis, and come up with some strategies that you can use to improve your leadership capability — with or without the formal training.  ———————— FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career! Moment #56: Making the Most of the Feedback You're Given
2024/02/18
Moment #56 // We talk a lot as leaders about how to give feedback, and it takes many years of experience to actually get good at it. What we don’t talk about nearly as much is what to do when we’re on the other side of the table!  Receiving good quality, helpful, accurate feedback is essential if you want to reach your performance potential. If this is true, then why are we so averse to receiving feedback?  Learning how to receive and implement feedback is a critical skill for leaders who want to be their best… the downloadable resource from Ep.116 has everything you need to know! You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.116: Receiving Feedback. ———————— CEOs and business owners, are you ready to lead, succeed, and reclaim your time? When Profits Create Problems: What can we learn from Boeing?
2024/02/13
Episode #285 // Like many of you, I’ve done quite a bit of flying over the course of my adult life. I’m not a nervous flyer at all, but I’m always interested to see what’s happening in the world of commercial aviation. This bumper episode is a mini case study on Boeing, which has been in the news again recently – for all the wrong reasons. Another mid-air incident in January (which, fortunately, didn’t result in any serious injuries) has thrust the aircraft manufacturer back into the spotlight. Some of the contributing factors can be traced back to decisions that were made decades ago. There are some important lessons in this for everyone, regardless of the industry or country you’re working in. In this episode, I explore some important questions: Do Boeing’s problems stem purely from corporate greed? If not, what other forces are at work?Does a perfectionistic culture deliver the best results? How do you improve a company’s commercial performance, without sacrificing safety and reliability? What components of your value chain should you seek to outsource? Is it possible to effectively transfer risk to a supplier? You won’t have to deal with issues that are this public or dramatic very often, but if you can learn from the Boeing experience, it may prevent you from stepping on some of the same landmines. ———————— CEOs and business owners, are you ready to lead, succeed, and reclaim your time? Moment #55: Do You Want To Be Right? Or Successful?
2024/02/11
Moment #55 // Being right isn’t everything – it’s just a good start. Many leaders like to position themselves as “the smartest person in the room”. And there’s a lot to be said for superior intelligence. But you have to know how to use your intellect to get the best possible outcomes from your people.  To excel as a leader, you have to go way beyond your pure intellectual horsepower, and enter the nebulous world of emotional intelligence and human connection! You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.84: Being Right Isn’t Everything. ———————— FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Giving Your Boss Feedback: How honest should you be?
2024/02/06
Episode #284 // I spend a lot of time and energy helping leaders to build their capability in giving feedback to their people: how to engage them in difficult conversations; how to review their performance; how to know when it’s time to say goodbye to someone who isn’t performing. Let’s face it, if you want to be even mildly competent as a leader, this is a core skill. It has a technical element (of course) but, even more important are the psychological and emotional elements. In this episode, I flip the script to look at how to give feedback to the people above you. How can you give feedback to your boss, in a way that is respectful and direct? But more importantly, in a way that gives you a high chance of success — that is, your boss actually listens to you!   I cover how to tell if your boss is receptive to feedback and, if so, how you earn the right to provide it. I explore the role of the trusted advisor. And I give you a practical, seven-step process for delivering feedback to your boss that you can download for free by clicking here. ———————— FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Moment #54: Great Leaders Are Great Negotiators
2024/02/04
Moment #54 // We all think we know how to negotiate. After all, our negotiating skills are honed from birth, as we tussle with our parents to try to convince them to do what we want them to.  Despite this, I learned a number of years ago that my negotiation skills were not what I thought they were. I was humbled in a fairly straightforward mock negotiation at business school. But what I learned in the following weeks equipped me to go on to negotiate and win several large contracts, worth billions of dollars in revenue. All great leaders are also great negotiators – developing this skill will put a critical arrow in your quiver as you go up through the ranks. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.75: Negotiation Fundamentals. ———————— FREE PERSONALIZED PODCAST PLAYLIST: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career! Trusting Your Team: Are you making this mistake?
2024/01/30
Episode #283 // When we talk about trust in the context of leadership, it’s normally about how to get your people to trust you! And, of course, this should be a critical focus for leaders at every level.  But today’s topic runs a little deeper: how much trust should you give to the managers who work for you?” Regardless of your org structure or the size of your team, at least some of your direct reports are bound to tell you that you should give them unconditional trust — to give them the benefit of the doubt, in every situation. This raises a number of important questions: should your trust be unconditional? When should you choose not to give someone the benefit of the doubt? Should you trust every person equally?  In today’s episode, I begin by explaining why trust has to be both given and earned. I explore how to deal with opinions, assertions, and unsupported claims in your leadership team. And I finish with some guidelines for making your interventions feel like they are trusting enquiries, not overbearing micromanagement. Moment #53: Push Back or Burn Out!
2024/01/28
Moment #53 // The factors behind the increasing levels of work stress that people are experiencing are many and varied – it’s a complex issue. What is pretty clear, though, is that more and more leaders are reporting that they are burnt out.  But, if you apply a couple of relatively simple and practical remedies, you will be able to protect yourself from burnout. SImple? Yes! Practical? Definitely! But easy? Absolutely not! It’s not easy because you have to learn to push back, and set some clear boundaries. And you can’t do that unless you have a deep understanding of how your team can maximize the value it delivers.  Once you can answer that question, you have to learn how to say “no” to everything else. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.61: Learning to Say "No". ———————— FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career! Celebrating 5 Million Downloads: Unpacking our podcast’s 5 success principles
2024/01/23
Episode #282 // Our first episode of No Bullsh!t Leadership was produced in August 2018. This week, we achieved a major milestone - 5 million downloads of the podcast. To be perfectly honest, Em and I are pretty ordinary when it comes to celebrating success… and I often cringe at the thinly-veiled, self-congratulatory posts that seem to dominate LinkedIn and some of the other social media platforms. But I think it’s important to mark this milestone by standing back, and reflecting on what this really means, in the context of our purpose: to improve the quality of leaders, globally! So, instead of just pumping up our own tyres, in this episode Em and I have distilled a number of success principles that we learnt on our path to 5 million. We want this behind-the-scenes look to inspire you in your own leadership journey – it’s amazing what you can achieve with a blank sheet of paper and some ridiculously bold aspirations! Moment #52: Building Professional Credibility
2024/01/21
Moment #52: Building Professional Credibility // Whatever you try to achieve as a leader relies, at least to some extent, on your credibility. If you have strong personal credibility, it makes everything you do inordinately easier.   Credibility galvanizes your team… it instills confidence in the people above you… and it ultimately becomes an integral part of your leadership brand. Without it, every yard you manage to move forward feels… hard. Credibility is the hallmark of all great leaders.  It's the type of credibility that’s founded in their competence, their values, their leadership approach and, ultimately, their results. And everyone around them notices—you can feel the difference! You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.243: Credibility: The Hallmark of Great Leaders. ———————— FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career! Building Team Morale: Confident, Secure, and Enabled to Perform
2024/01/16
Episode #281 // Team morale is built through proactive commitment and focus. It doesn’t just happen.  One of the great misconceptions of leadership is that, if you make people happy, they will perform better and team morale will be high. Although this is possible in theory, it is highly unlikely to happen in practice. One of our listeners once made a comment about what it takes to build morale, in a military context:  “Soldiers with high morale aren’t ‘happy’: they’re confident, secure, and enabled to perform. They’re not well-fed, rested, and kept out of harm’s way.” Building morale requires strong leadership. The object of the exercise is to give your people the opportunity to experience long-term satisfaction and fulfillment, which is a very different proposition from the short-term, sugar-hit happiness that most leaders focus on.
