Description

Comedian Adam Blank hosts "Remember The Game?", a retro gaming podcast. Each week, Adam and his guest will select a video game that they grew up playing, and spend time reminiscing about what they loved (or hated) about it. Not intended to be a history lesson, "Remember The Game?" is more like a conversation you'd overhear on the playground as a kid. The discussions are all over the place, and are guaranteed to fill you with that warm, nostalgic feeling. (Or rage, like you felt with the underwater level in the original Ninja Turtles game). Either way, it's gonna be fun! New episodes every Wednesday!

These two, who grew up on opposite sides of the Sega/Nintendo divide, embark on a thrilling journey through the gaming landscape. Together, they challenge each other to revisit and play the gems they missed in the gaming golden days. The SNES RPG library is the stuff of legend, so it's easy for the lesser known games to slip through the cracks. Lufia II is one of those titles, and I'm here to tell you it's a game worth exploring said crack for. I'd never played, or heard of it, before this episode, but it's like a standard Final Fantasy RPG meets The Legend of Zelda. You fight battles in classic turn-based RPG combat, but outside of that you solve puzzles and blow up walls like you would in A Link to the Past. I don't love RPGs, but this one hooked me.  I have two guests this week. Long-time hot dog, Jnasty, sponsored this episode and got me playing Lufia II in the first place, so he swings by to explain why he's so hot for Sinistrals. And then our power hungry Discord mod, Captain N, gives me a shout to take a deep dive into feeding monsters shields whilee navigating the glitchiest dungeon to ever glitch (it'll all make sense after you listen). And before we save the world, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone calls for an end to micro-transactions. Will I ever review Cyberpunk 2077? And is Mario 64 a horror game??? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 more SNES hidden gem RPGs: Secret of Evermore, Terranigma, and Breath of Fire II. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Patreon.com/RememberTheGame And you can check out Bradley's wheelings & dealings at: Instagam: @TheGamingOdyssey Twitch.tv/VideoGameOdyssey I dunno if Miyamoto was just in a bad mood or something, but The Lost Levels is probably his most sadistic creation to date. This game is like Mario Dark Souls. And I don't know what it is about it, but I love it. I like tough platformers, I love Mario games, and this one cranks the difficulty up to about 50. It has to be the hardest (Nintendo published) Mario game ever made. And while it originally didn't make its way over here until Mario All-Stars on the SNES, the original version is available on Switch Online now. Both of them will fuck you up. My guest this week, Bradley McCue, took one for the team and spent over a week plugging away at Lost Levels and fighting the urge to throw his controller to get ready for this podcast, and we have a pretty beefy convo about whether or not Lost Levels is good, too hard, and if it was the right call by Nintendo to not release it in North America back in the day (it was). And before we RAGE, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if it's wrong to play games on easy these days. Where do I stand on the Slay The Spire board game? And what classic series that HASN'T got the remake treatment yet do I want to see get it the most?? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 NES tough games: Blaster Master, Fester's Quest, and Ghosts N Goblins. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Subscriptions start at just $3/month, and 5% of our patreon income every month will be donated to our 24 hour Extra-Life charity stream at the end of the year! Patreon.com/RememberTheGame We're double dipping on Donkey Kong. Last week we talked about the OG arcade game, and this week we're talking about the hidden gem of the DK franchise: Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! For some reason, people seem to think I hate this game, and that couldn't be further from the truth. Do I think it's the third best game in the DKC trilogy? Yes. But I'd also put that trilogy up against just about any platforming trilogy ever made. I don't hate this game at all. I just hate Kiddy Kong. My guest this week is long-time supporter of the show, Carbon Fibre Zombie (real name, as far as I know). We spent over an hour talking about why this game struggles to shine in the shadows of its older brothers, and why it shouldn't because it's still awesome. We also sing the praises of the greatest Kong of all-time (Dixie) and dump a little on the worst Kong (Kiddy) And before we eat bananas, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if I had to choose, would I only play my favourite games of all-time, or all the other games ever made?? What the hell is going on with our Subreddit??? And where do/did I stand on POGs?? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Patreon.com/RememberTheGame Alright, alright, I hear ya. You want more episodes about arcade games. Your wish is my command, and this week we're talking about one of the biggest, most iconic arcade cabs of all-time. The cabinet that saved Nintendo of America and kickstarted the legendary career of Shigeru Miyamoto. We're talking Donkey Kong. Admittedly, I've spent more time with the NES port of this game than the arcade version, but a classic is a classic. That first level with the pink construction beams, the barrels, and that Mario guy is among the most recognizable screens in gaming. To this day, I can't walk by this cabinet without dropping a little change. Who doesn't love Donkey Kong? You know who definitely doesn't doesn't love Donkey Kong? My buddy Chris. We had a great chat about one of the most legendary video games of all-time, and looked at the sequels and stuff as well. I love this franchise, I love this game, and I like this podcast. And before we go back to 1981, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if they NEED to play the OG Final Fantasy VII before diving into Remake/Rebirth this year. Is anyone else as done with crafting in games as we are? And why do I always say "keep the bills on"? (The answer is lame). Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! 282. Batman: Arkham Asylum

Subscriptions start at just $3/month, and 5% of our patreon income every month will be donated to our 24 hour Extra-Life charity stream at the end of the year! Patreon.com/RememberTheGame Batman: Arkham Asylum is such an important video game. It's not just one of the greatest games ever made, but it really kicked off the modern era of superhero games, and I'd argue that it influenced the action genre as a whole. It's about damned time we showed it some love on RTG. Arkham Asylum absolutely dominated our PS3/Xbox 360 poll in November, and I've spent a couple weeks repaying it for the first time in well over ten years. It might feel a litttttttle basic, combat wise, by today's standards, but holy balls does it hold up. Still looks great, plays awesome, and that voice acting? Forget about it. My guest this week is the Robin to my Batman, my buddy Tyler, and we stayed up late Friday night talking about what an incredible game Arkham Asylum is, and what kind of impact it had on the industry moving forward.  And before we visit the Batcave that was built under a prion with nobody noticing which makes absolutely no f*****g sense, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if I have a method to my madness as far as what console I play multi-console games on these days. Would a new Ecco the Dolphin game work in 2024? And if I could pick one game to be a launch title for Nintendo's next console, what would it be? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 retro Batman games: Batman (NES), The Adventures of Batman & Robin, and Batman Forever! Subscriptions start at just $3/month, and 5% of our patreon income every month will be donated to our 24 hour Extra-Life charity stream at the end of the year! Patreon.com/RememberTheGame We've been talking about covering Jak & Daxter for YEARS! I just needed to find time to replay it first. I finally squeezed it in, and I'm happy to say it's as fun as I remember. I love this damned game. If you've never played, it's your classic 3D platforming collect-a-thon. But the charming characters, crisp graphics, and interactions between Jak and Daxter put it alongside Banjo Kazooie, Ratchet & Clank, and Sly Cooper as one of my favourite non-Mario platformers of all-time. I haven't been able to put it down for a week, just hit the 100% mark yesterday, and I'm ready to (finally) tell you all about why I love this game so much, and why you should, too. Years ago, I promised my buddy Andre that I'd have him on the show if we ever talked Jak & Daxter, and the time has come. I hope this episode lives up to the hype for those of you that have been waiting forever for it, and once we're talking talking orbs, we spend a few minutes speculating about the future of the series, too. And before we swim in eco, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks how I feel about emulating modern games if you already own them. Where did sports game developers go wrong? And are there any myths about Canada I want to confirm or deny? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 PS2 platforming classics: Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal, Sly Cooper 2, and Ape Escape 2! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Subscriptions start at just $3/month, and 5% of our patreon income every month will be donated to our 24 hour Extra-Life charity stream at the end of the year! Patreon.com/RememberTheGame In case you didn't know, I'm a bit of a Mega Man fan. And while I love most of his games, Mega Man 9 is like one of the best slices of a phenomenal pizza. This game is so...f*****g...good. And what's really wild about MM9 is that it kinda came outta nowhere. Mega Man 8 released in the late 90's, and while we had some spin-off games, it seemed like the mainline Mega series was Mega dead. And then all of sudden Capcom announced that a new game was in the works, and it was going back to its classic 8-bit roots. I was excited, but a little skeptical. Fortunately, it turned out that they not only reached, but exceeded my expectations. Mega Man 9 is beloved by practically every Mega Man fan, and with good reason. It might just be the best game in the series. I'm rolling solo this week. I'm excited to kick off a new year of the show, and what better way than by talking about a game I could ramble about for hours without coming up for air. Let's talk Mega Man! And before I get Mega, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks what retro consoles I currently own, and which ones am I looking to pick up? Have I ever scrapped an episode of the show because I wasn't happy with it? And a listener wonders if they should scold their son for not holding "run" while playing Mario? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 of the highest rated Capcom games on Metacritic: Street Fighter 4, Devil May Cry, and Resident Evil: Code Veronica! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Patreon.com/RememberTheGame And pick up some tickets to Mark's show at: www.painted fish.ca Last year, we snuck a review of Portal in right before New Year's Eve, and I liked it so much that I swore Portal 2 would get an episode in 2023. And this game might be even better than the original was! If you've never played the Portal games, I'm begging ya - pause this show, go play em (they're on everything) and then come back and bask in the Portaly goodness. These are probably the two best puzzle games (not named Tetris) that I've ever played. The writing is hilarious, the puzzles are clever, and the mechanics are as silky smooth as smooth ass silk. These games are practically perfect. Pending RTG Hall of Famer Mark McCue is my guest this week, and just we did at the end of last year, we had a great time talking about the brilliance that is Portal. Or...Portal 2. Whatever. These games rules. And before we eat up with a potato, I use put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if I have any gaming resolutions for next year? What era of TMNT is best? And why is our Subreddit causing so much confusion?? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Patreon.com/RememberTheGame I've said it a thousand times and I'll keep beating the drum: video games are art. And Psychonauts is as artistic as any game I've played for this podcast. A funky ass platformer starring a kid with psychic powers that scapes the circus and runs off to psychic power summer camp. The levels take place in the minds of the people at this camp, and you do stuff like battling Napoleon in a board game, crushing a fish city Ala Godzilla, and solving the age old question of "who is the Milkman?"  This game came out on top of our Xbox Patreon Poll back in October, and I have to say, I'm glad it has the cult following that it does, because I'm drinking the kool-aid. Minus that last level. F**k that level. My buddy Patrick agrees, as you'll hear when you listen in on the phone call we had about Tim Schafer's Psychonauts. And before we find the milkman, I use my powerful brain to put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if indie games have overtaken AAA games from a quality standpoint? Do I ever check out the speed run charity events? And since we're talking Psychonauts, what psychedelics have I played with in the past? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Patreon.com/RememberTheGame And you can check out Tyler's (incredibly rad) projects at: YouTube.com/s762official What kid DIDN'T grow up dreaming of becoming Star Wars hero, Dash Rendar? I know, I know haha. Fortunately, his game is a lot cooler than he is. We're talking Shadows of the Empire! I only got into Star Wars about 3 years ago, and once I saw the movies, I had to start playing the games. And I'm happy to say that, six games into the library, I haven't played a "bad" Star Wars video game yet. This one is probably the closest, but I don't think it's bad. It's just an early N64 game. This is one of our "stupid sexy sponsored" episodes, so said sponsor and long-time hot dog, PBRJax, swings by the show to explain why he's such a Dash fan. And then the Chewy to my Han Solo, my buddy Tyler, gives me a call to talk about how none of us can beat this f*****g game. And before we save the galaxy, I use the force to summon another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks what my favourite (and least favourite) video games shows/movies are. Should a parent let their kid beat them at video games? And when will I play Baldur's Gate 3!?! Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too!
