Netflix’s You Are What You Eat: A Twin Study Director Louie Psihoyos
2024/02/21
We are very excited to welcome back to the show one of the most visionary minds of our time. He’s an Oscar-winning filmmaker, an award-winning photographer, and a passionate environmental activist. Through his lens, he has captured not only the beauty of our world but also the urgent need to protect it.   From his groundbreaking documentary “The Cove,” which exposed shocking animal abuse in Japan, to his awe-inspiring projects like “Racing Extinction” and “The Game Changers,” Louie Psihoyos has consistently pushed the boundaries of storytelling to inspire action and ignite change in all of us.   Today, he’s here with us to discuss his new documentary series “You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment,” which chronicles the recent Stanford University study that put a group of genetically identical twins on different diets – plant-based and omnivore – for two months to explore how the foods we consume impact the body.   So tune in to this must-listen episode to be inspired and empowered as we explore how what we eat dictates who we are and even what we can become.   “I want to know the truth because I want to defend the truth. I can defend a lifestyle choice of my own, you know, but I’ve been to CAFOs – these, you know, Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations –  myself. I’ve been there. I’ve smelled them. You look at these animals; you’re in that horror show that most people can’t get to, but people aren’t making an informed decision about where their animals come from. They’re doing it emotionally. They’re doing it by this bro science. And I want to find out the truth.” - Louie Psihoyos   What we discuss in this episode: - The inspiration for You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment.  - Blue zones and longevity. - How telomere length dictates how we age. - Challenges presented during the study. - The exciting health transformation the vegans experienced as a result of the study. - Exposure to and impact of endocrine-disrupting plastics. - Clothes and the environment. - Louie’s exciting upcoming projects.   Resources: - Watch You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment | Netflix Official Site - https://www.netflix.com/title/81133260 - Oceanic Preservation Society - https://opsociety.org/ - Instagram: Louie Psihoyos - https://www.instagram.com/psihoyos/ - How to be a Conscious Consumer with Healabel app creator Adriane Marie - Switch4Good - https://switch4good.org/how-to-be-a-conscious-consumer-with-healabel-app-creator-adriane-marie/ - California Cloth Foundry - https://clothfoundry.com/   ★☆★ Click the link below to support the ADD SOY Act! ★☆★ https://switch4good.org/add-soy-act/ ★☆★ Share the website and get your resources here ★☆★ https://kidsandmilk.org/ ★☆★ Send us a voice message and ask a question. How Big Food is Making You Fat & Sick with Nutrition Legend Marion Nestle
2024/02/14
Our remarkable guest today is scientist and acclaimed author Dr. Marion Nestle. She’s a Paulette Goddard Professor in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies and Public Health at New York University and founder of the field of food studies. She’s THE authority on food politics – in fact, she wrote the book on it – and for decades, she has been a transformative figure, working to improve our dietary choices while exposing corporate greed and injustice inherent in the food industry.   Dr. Nestle is the author of a dozen books. She appears in the hit documentary Super Size Me and the new Netflix doc You Are What You Eat, among many others. In 2023, she was awarded the prestigious Edinburgh Medal for Science and Humanities.   So tune in for an illuminating conversation with a crusader who’s dedicated her life to changing our broken food system!   “I finally caught on to agriculture, that you cannot understand why people eat the food they do unless you understand how the agricultural system works. And now everything is a food system. How does the whole system work? Everything about food, from how it’s grown to how it’s transported to how it’s sold to how it’s marketed to how people buy it, eat it, waste it, and all of the sociology that goes with that. So, I went from being a splitter to a lumper. Splitters are – the world divides into splitters and lumpers – and in the beginning, I was a splitter. I was interested in every single nutrient; I cared a lot about every single one of them. And now what I’m really interested in is what the whole system looks like. Because I think if we’re going to encourage people to eat more healthfully, we need system change.” - Dr. Marion Nestle   What we discuss in this episode: - Why Dr. Nestle chose a career path in nutrition. - How, when, and why the obesity epidemic started. - How food companies try to get people to eat more. - The role ultra-processed junk foods play in poor health outcomes. - How the tobacco industry deceived and manipulated the public, and how food companies have adopted the same tactics. - Debunking food myths. - The importance of eating a whole food plant-based diet. - How the food industry influences the dietary guidelines of the United States. - Why you should be discerning about the food you feed your pets. - Dr. Nestle’s lifestyle and diet.   Resources: - Bulletproof coffee review: https://switch4good.org/press_releases/new-review-shoots-holes-in-bulletproof-coffees-health-claims/ - Marion Nestle’s Food Politics blog: Food Politics - https://www.foodpolitics.com/ - Her books: Marion Nestle: books, biography, latest update - https://www.amazon.com/stores/Marion-Nestle/author/B001ILIEEY?ref=ap_rdr&isDramIntegrated=true&shoppingPortalEnabled=true - Twitter/X: Marion Nestle (@marionnestle) / X - https://twitter.com/marionnestle?lang=en - Instagram: Marion Nestle (@marionnestle) • Instagram photos and videos - https://www.instagram.com/marionnestle/   ★☆★ Click the link below to support the ADD SOY Act! ★☆★ https://switch4good.org/add-soy-act/ ★☆★ Share the website and get your resources here ★☆★ https://kidsandmilk.org/ ★☆★ Send us a voice message and ask a question. The Pill that Changes Your Sex Life, Your Sexiness, & Your Partner Choice with Dr. Sarah Hill
2024/02/07
Over 150 million women around the world are on the birth control pill. And while “the pill” has given women the ability to control their fertility, there are things that every woman should know about its effects, short-term and long-term.    Our guest today - professor, research psychologist, and author Dr. Sarah Hill -  is here to discuss her must-read book This Is Your Brain on Birth Control: How the Pill Changes Everything, where she sheds light on all the ways hormonal birth control affects women – the good, the bad, and the unsettling.    So if you’re interested in learning the truth about how the pill could impact your - or someone you love - brain,  sex life,  choice of partners, or even how it’s shaping our society and culture, tune in to be blown away by the information we discuss in this episode!   “I was at a research talk, and one of my colleagues was giving a research presentation on the effects of early life trauma on the stress response, and he’d mentioned in the presentation that they only looked at the men and their sample from all these people that they collected because most of the women in their study were on hormonal birth control. And everybody knows that women who are on hormonal birth control don’t have a cortisol response to stress. Then, I went up to him after his presentation. I was like, ‘What is it that you said about women on birth control not having a cortisol response to stress?’ And he said, ‘Oh yeah, you know, surprised me too, but they’ve been publishing on this for a really long time and nobody really understands why.’ I felt different when I went off of hormonal birth control. Women have a different stress response when they’re on hormonal birth control compared to when they’re not. Because when you take the pill, it’s gonna change your hormones, and when you change your hormones, that changes everything.” - Dr. Sarah Hill   What we discuss in this episode: - How Dr. Hill’s life changed after she stopped taking hormonal birth control. - The birth control pill and cortisol response.  - The birth control pill’s effect on body weight. - The neurobiological effects of the pill.  - How attraction to your mate is altered by the birth control pill.  - How the pill affects libido and sexual function. - Why testosterone levels are lower in men than at any time in recent history. - Adolescents and the pill.   Resources: - Dr. Hill’s website: Sarah E. All this stuff that’s happened to him. You know what? I don’t blame him for drinking. I don’t blame him. What he’s been through with his mother, finding it out that way, and all this stuff. Let him drink. Let him drink as much as he wants, for God’s sake.’ That was heaven to me that I now had a free pass in my mind to drink more. And, of course, it didn’t work out that way. What To Live For with Chef and Influencer Erin Ireland
2024/01/24
Our guest today, Erin Ireland, is a legend in the Vancouver food scene, first as a food reporter and purveyor of good taste and now as the owner of a renowned vegan bakery in East Vancouver.    When she learned about the cruelty and environmental destruction caused by animal agriculture, she dared to convert her successful nonvegan business – To Die For Foods – into the thriving vegan storefront bakery – To Live For Bakery & Café – with a loyal, passionate following. Now, she’s showing the world how amazing plant-based eats can be and why we should all be eating slaughter-free food.   If you’re interested in learning what it’s like to open and operate a vegan bakery or if you just want to bring your plant-based baking skills to the next level, this episode is certainly for you!   “I was probably the fittest girl on my team, not the best volleyball player, but I was really into the weight room. I knew nothing about nutrition, and I thought that eating animal protein would give me– would help grow muscle. One of my biggest memories of that time was never feeling full. Like, I wondered what it would feel like to be full. I was literally a garbage gut. So I would go out with my team, you know, we’d have pre-meals and post-meals, and they nicknamed me the garbage gut because I would eat everybody’s leftovers. Like, if anybody had some leftover pasta or steak or anything, I wanted it. I was always hungry. And I always look back to that, and I wonder if it’s because I just wasn’t eating– I wasn’t getting enough nutrients. I wasn’t eating very many vegetables. I was eating this, often processed meat, and, you know, I didn’t feel good. Flash forward 10 years; it’s been 20 years now, but I feel so satiated most of the time. I’m full after a whole food plant-based meal.” - Erin Ireland   What we discuss in this episode: - How Erin felt as a college athlete eating a diet high in animal protein. - Her journey to becoming a food reporter and her transition to highlighting vegan and vegetarian dishes. - Erin’s eye-opening experiences on a dairy farm. - Her favorite stories interacting with customers. - How Erin changed her nonvegan recipes to vegan. - Baking tips to veganize recipes and Erin’s secrets for delicious treats. - Her experience opening a vegan brick-and-mortar bakery, and the stellar public response.   Resources: - Erin’s website: Erin Ireland - https://erinireland.ca/ - Instagram: Erin Ireland (@erinireland) • Instagram photos and videos - https://www.instagram.com/erinireland/ - To Live For Bakery & Café: To Live For - https://tolivefor.ca/   ★☆★ Click the link below to support the ADD SOY Act! ★☆★ https://switch4good.org/add-soy-act/ ★☆★ Share the website and get your resources here ★☆★ https://kidsandmilk.org/ ★☆★ Send us a voice message and ask a question. I’m going to prove that it’s diet that can either prevent cancer, prevent recurrence, or treat it if you’ve got it.’ And so he explained all this to me, and I’m thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, you know. What am I going to do?’ And I thought, ‘Well, I can always get the chemo-radiation.’ He said, ‘No. No, because when it works they’re going to say it was the chemo and radiation that did it. You cannot have, so you have to make a choice. No chemo. No radiation.’ He pulled out a file drawer and he said, ‘You’re welcome to spend as much time as you want looking at the research that I based this on.’ And he spent a full two hours with me. You know, when was the doctor ever going to do that? Let's Get Uncomfortable with Dr. Faraz Harsini
2024/01/10
Today’s guest is Dr. Faraz Harsini. He’s a cultivated meat bioprocessing scientist at the Good Food Institute and the founder and CEO of Allied Scholars for Animal Protection – a nonprofit that supports and mentors student advocates and future vegan leaders for the abolition of cruelty to humans and nonhumans. Dr. Harsini appeared on the podcast in episode 256, in which we discussed his upbringing in Iran as a member of the LGBT community, his advocacy work on college campuses, and a myriad of social justice issues, but the conversation was so powerful, and there was so much ground we didn’t get to cover, especially about his current work, that we had to have him back.    So whether or not you listened to the first part of our interview with him, you definitely want to stay with us as we tackle some serious topical issues that pertain to everyone.   “I guess the reason that I promote a plant-based diet and veganism full-time today is because I did my entire master’s on cancer, and I worked on proteins involving cancer. And the fact that nobody ever mentioned diet at all, like I'm not talking about my research, no one, even those textbooks. And it had to come as a surprise to me when I like had to learn it by myself, and then you looked at it and you realized that every single Cancer Institute in the world says the less meat you eat, the better. Every single Cancer Institute in the world, and some even include Dairy and other types of meat, but when it comes to processed and unprocessed red meat, every single Cancer Institute in the world says the less meat you eat, the better.” - Dr. Faraz Harsini   What we discuss in this episode: - The complete protein myth and why plants are such a powerful source of protein. - What happens when you cook and eat red meat? - The benefits of cultivated meat production. - The dangers posed to humans from animal experimentation. - The cruelty Dr. Harsini witnessed while visiting a dairy farm in Texas. - Dr. Harsini’s thoughts on changing our food system. - The importance of speaking up as a vegan.   Resources: - Dr. Harsini’s website: Dr. Faraz Harsini - ASAP’s website: Allied Scholars for Animal Protection - Good Food Institute: Faraz Harsini, M.Sc., Ph.D. - The Good Food Institute - Dr. Harsini’s Instagram: Dr. Faraz Harsini (@dr_faraz_harsini) • Instagram photos and videos - Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrFarazHarsini - YouTube: Dr. Faraz Harsini - YouTube - Animal Activism Mentorship - https://animalactivismmentorship.com/   ★☆★ Click the link below to support the ADD SOY Act! ★☆★ https://switch4good.org/add-soy-act/ ★☆★ Share the website and get your resources here ★☆★ https://kidsandmilk.org/ ★☆★ Send us a voice message and ask a question. The worldwide prevalence of obesity has nearly tripled in less than fifty years.    If we are more informed about potential health consequences than ever before, why are more and more adults choosing unhealthy eating habits that lead to weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease?    Dr. Stephan Guyenet, who has spent more than a decade studying the neuroscience of body fatness, argues that most of us aren’t choosing our eating habits at all.   His book, The Hungry Brain, dives into the idea that eating behaviors aren’t a result of weakness or poor willpower but of an evolutionary mismatch between our brain’s ancient programming and our current environment.    Today, he sits down with Dotsie and Alexandra to explain how our brains are hardwired to seek the high-calorie, dopamine-releasing foods that our ancestors relied on and why that works against us in modern society.    You’ll hear how your neurochemistry is influencing your eating habits, why you’re suddenly hungry for dessert after being satiated by dinner, and what you can do to overcome some of these neurological triggers that make it difficult to change the way you eat.    If you’ve ever been frustrated by a craving or your habit of second helpings, don’t miss this episode to hear why. If you want to change your stomach, you need to focus on your head.   “The greater variety of the types of foods that we have available to us, the more calories we will tend to eat at a meal, and we won’t even necessarily feel any more full.” - Dr. Stephan Guyenet   What we discuss in this episode: - Dotsie’s experience at the Plant-Based World Conference & Expo - How convenience, cost, and the palatable seduction of food have contributed to higher rates of obesity - Why do we have a greater eating drive than we did only a century ago? Dr. Stephan Guyenet explains how our ability to concentrate dopamine-releasing ingredients is qualitatively similar to the creation of crack cocaine  - The evolutionary mismatch: How our ancestors' drive to survive is working against us today - What do genetics have to do with our body composition and our penchant for overeating - Why you should focus on diet before exercise if you’re hoping to lose weight - Understanding the two systems of our brain and why activities like exercise require overcoming the effort barrier of System 1 and thinking with System 2 - The fat regulatory system, the starvation response, and why “calories in, calories out” is not as simple as counting numbers on a nutrition label - The two things that slow your metabolic rate and what you can do about them - Simple things you can try to overcome your body’s starvation response and limit your habit of overeating   Resources: - Website: StephanGuyenet.com   ★☆★ Click the link below to support the ADD SOY Act! https://switch4good.org/add-soy-act/ ★☆★ Share the website and get your resources here https://kidsandmilk.org/ ★☆★ Send us a voice message and ask a question. How Kraft Could Kill Veganism with Entrepreneur Michael Schwarz
2023/12/27
Growing up in South Africa to a family of activists and witnessing the devastating effects of apartheid, today’s guest, Michael Schwarz, had his moral compass set to true north at an early age.    Driven by a profound sense of justice and a desire to combat the deleterious effects dairy has on our planet, he decided to step away from a 25-year career as an intellectual property lawyer and change the food industry by launching Treeline cheese – an independent vegan cheese company.    Michael also appeared in episode 76, where we learned all about his remarkable upbringing, the incredible work his father did as a defense attorney – including the trial of Nelson Mandela, where Michael’s father defended Mandela’s co-defendant and won – and how he made the transition from being a lawyer himself to a vegan cheese entrepreneur.   So if you’re interested in learning what it’s like to run a small vegan cheese company in an era where conglomerates want to take over the industry with cheap knockoffs – and powerful entities like the dairy lobby of Canada are after you – you definitely want to tune in!    “If you look at the products that these larger companies are making, they just aren’t good. Take a look at Kraft’s so-called plant-based Philadelphia cheese. It is basically almost entirely saturated fat. It has no protein. It’s calories and saturated fat. And that’s the bad fat. It’s not olive oil or anything like that. It’s stuff your cardiologist tells you you need to cut down on dramatically, right? I mean, you can eat an entire tub of that stuff and get zero protein. So what does that do to the public’s image of vegan food? Is anyone who’s a nonvegan gonna say, ‘Oh, I’d far rather eat this stuff with no protein, no nutritional value.’ So is that really helping the vegan movement when people look at it and say, ‘This is vegan food?’ Come on. The image of vegan food, I think, is being harmed.” - Michael Schwarz   What we discuss in this episode: - How the Canadian dairy lobby is trying to block Michael’s trademark. - The threat vegan products pose to Big Dairy. - How meat and dairy conglomerates are hurting vegan brands and working to inhibit progress. - Tips for consumers to navigate making purchases that align with their ethics.  - How Michael makes Treeline cheeses more environmentally friendly. - Why it’s important to support smaller vegan brands. - Treeline’s delicious new products and plans for the future.    Resources: - Treeline Cheese: https://www.treelinecheese.com/ - Switch4Good podcast episode 76: Ethics + Business with Treeline Cheese Founder Michael Schwarz - Switch4Good - Steven Colbert clip   ★☆★ Click the link below to support the ADD SOY Act! https://switch4good.org/add-soy-act/ ★☆★ Share the website and get your resources here https://kidsandmilk.org/ ★☆★ Send us a voice message and ask a question. FLASHBACK FRIDAY - Beating Food Addiction with Chuck Carroll
2023/12/22
You don’t get to be 400 pounds overnight. You also don’t completely reverse your diet and become a plant-based expert overnight. Chuck Carroll has experienced both of these extremes, and today he joins us as a health and nutrition advocate and host of the Exam Room podcast. This is for everyone who has an addictive behavior—when moderation simply does not work. Whether it’s an addiction to Taco Bell—like Chuck—or to alcohol or heroine, it’s Chuck’s belief that you can’t cure it, but you can overcome it. His story is powerful, and despite its extremes, everyone can relate.   “Food addiction is like any other thing. If you’re not ready to change, you’re not going to change.” - Chuck Carroll   What we discuss in this episode: - Food and other addictions - His experience at 400 pounds - Weight loss surgery and what comes after - How to eat slow - The public perspective of obesity   Click the link below and support the ADD SOY Act! https://switch4good.org/add-soy-act/ Send us a voice message. The Next Girl Exposes Dairy’s Secrets with Filmmaker Lisa DeCrescente
2023/12/20
Our guest today has done whatever it takes to grow the vegan community by working tirelessly in many different avenues. A vegan for over 20 years and a former restaurateur, Lisa DeCrescente is now the director of special projects at Farm Animal Rights Movement, she’s a board member for Sustainable Earth Eating, AND she’s the writer of the powerful, heart-wrenching short film The Next Girl, which has already received a plethora of awards and has a twist of an ending that will leave you floored.   You definitely want to stay with us as we talk about this profound film and hear Lisa’s thoughts on how to be the most effective difference-maker possible!   “I think it’s important to address that there are two purposes here. Yes, this movie is for vegans. This is for people who already know because once they see it, they realize this is another tool they can use to share with people who are just on that edge or who are curious or really need to understand something. And maybe this is a way to approach them differently than other ways they’ve attempted to. Friends, family, coworkers. But it’s also for people who are not vegan because they won’t see a documentary or a film about animals because, at that moment in time, when they think about it, it’s not on their radar. They don’t care, or they think it’s not true. Or they just don’t want to know. They know but they don’t want to know. We find that a lot. Or they’re in denial. Exactly. And I don’t know if we’ll get to those people with this film because if they’re in denial even showing them footage, they’ll say, ‘Well, you know, this is a very, very random thing.’ They don’t realize that this occurs every day all over the world, all the time.” - Lisa DeCrescente   What we discuss in this episode: - How Lisa came up with the concept of The Next Girl. - The conditions dairy cows live in and the abuse they endure. - The fates of male and female calves. - How the treatment of dairy cows is woefully overlooked. - The importance of having a “why” when adopting a vegan lifestyle. - Why Lisa decided to become vegan. - Lisa’s advice for vegans in relationships with non-vegans. - Events Lisa is planning in 2024 and how you can see and support The Next Girl.   Resources: - UnchainedTV link: The Next Girl - The Next Girl website: https://thenextgirlfilm.com/ - Farm Animal Rights Movement: The FARM Team - Planet Series Events: https://planetseriesevents.org/ - Lisa’s contact: lisa@farmusa.org   ★☆★ Click the link below to support the ADD SOY Act! https://switch4good.org/add-soy-act/ ★☆★ Share the website and get your resources here https://kidsandmilk.org/ ★☆★ Send us a voice message and ask a question.
