Sinner swaggers as Alcaraz stutters, Swiatek's Doha threepeat, RIP single-handed BHs?
2024/02/20
Joel, Kim and Chris are back to catch up on the latest week in tennis, which saw Iga Swiatek dominate once again in Doha, Jannik Sinner continue his seamless run of form so far in 2024 in Rotterdam, and Carlos Alcaraz beaten in the Golden Swing as Argentine Wildcard Diaz Acosta takes a surprise title. The trio also ponder the current lack of one-handed backhands in the ATP Top 10, whether the Australian Open will boldly move the Ladies Final to a Sunday from 2026 and who’s going to be picking up the titles this week on tour. We also hear from Tennis Weekly producer Alina on her behind the scenes experience at the IEB+ Open in Argentina and Joel tests Chris and Kim to a battle of the men’s one-Slam wonders. Joel, Kim and Chris are back to catch up on the week that was in tennis. Elena Rybakina clinched her second crown of the year in Abu Dhabi whilst Karolina Pliskova, Ugo Humbert and Tommy Paul were back to title winning ways in Transylvania, Marseille and Dallas respectively. Meanwhile in South America, Tennis Weekly goes to Buenos Aires for the Argentina Open! 2024/01/26
The Finals of the men’s and women’s singles at the Australian Open are set! Kim and Chris are back to talk through all the action from the semi final stage at Melbourne Park, which saw Jannik Sinner inflict the first ever defeat on Novak Djokovic at this stage of the tournament.  Daniil Medvedev also fought back from two sets down to make his way into his third Australian Open final whilst Aryna Sabalenka continues her imperious run of form to place herself one win away from a second straight title down under, sending US Open Champ Coco Gauff packing. China’s Qinwen Zheng also makes a debut Slam final, 10 years on from compatriot Li Na winning the title in Melbourne, and Gordon Reid and Alfie Hewett win the Men’s Wheelchair Doubles for the 5th consecutive year. Australian Open QFs - Alcaraz served out, Gauff wins ugly, Sinner-Djokovic is ON
2024/01/25
Joel and Kim are back to discuss the men’s and women’s quarter final action from Melbourne Park, as the Australian Open heads into its latter stages and Champions await to be crowned. With Sascha Zverev dispatching Carlos Alcaraz with a serving masterclass, Daniil Medvedev triumphing (and not on a plane home!) in 5 over Hubert Hurkacz, and Novak Djokovic finally winning a break point to send Taylor Fritz packing, and Jannik Sinner continuing his seamless run through the draw against Andrey Rublev we have our Final 4 players lined up to battle it out come Friday. Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff will meet again for the second Grand Slam in a row, albeit coming through their respective semi finals over Barbora Krejickova and Marta Kostuyk in very different fashions. The winner of that tie will await a First Time Slam Finalist of 12th seed Qinwen Zheng or qualifier Dayana Yastremska who continued their deep runs with wins over Anna Kalinskaya and Linda Noskova. Joel and Kim also commend Rohan Bopanna on reaching World No.1 in the Men’s Doubles rankings for the first time at the ripe old age of 43, a new record for the sport plus promising signs for Rafael Nadal returning to the tour in Doha next month. Australian Open R4 - A tale of two (totally different) draws
2024/01/23
Seeds are tumbling in the women’s draw leaving Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka the sole survivors, both hungry to pick up Grand Slam title number 2. In the way of a semi-final repeat of the US Open Final are Barbora Krejčíková and Marta Kostyuk.  Elsewhere there was heartbreak for Elina Svitolina but Ukrainian hopes were kept alive by Dayana Yastremska who continues her dream run down under.  On the men’s side Sinner, Alcaraz and Djokovic made serene progress whilst Zverev, Fritz and Rublev were made to work. With the top 6 seeds all still in the draw for the first time in the Open Era, there has never been a tougher last 8 at the Australian Open.  Joel and Chris also make their predictions for the quarter-finals and announce the winner of Collect-A-Set! Australian Open R3 - Swiatek sent packing by Noskova, Djokovic reaches 100 win milestone + Sabalenka double bagel
2024/01/20
Kim and Chris are back to wrap up the third round action from Melbourne Park as we find out which players have made their way through to the second week of the Australian Open. With top seed Iga Swiatek out at the hands of rising Czech star Linda Noskova and in form Grigor Dimitrov falling to the relatively unknown Portuguese Nuno Borges, it was a round of some surprises. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic got his campaign back on track with a straight sets win over Etcheverrry (and becoming the first player to play 100 matches at all 4 slams in the process) and Aryna Sabalenka opened her own bakery with a dominant double bagel against Lesia Tsurenko. They also discuss Britain’s Cam Norrie getting the better of Casper Ruud to make the 4th round for the first time down under, Qinwen Zheng coming through an all Chinese showcase on Rod Laver Arena and Arthur Cazaux proving the wildcard doubters wrong by storming into the second week with a comfortable straight sets win over Griekspoor. Australian Open R2 - Melbourne MAYHEM until 03:40AM
2024/01/19
Joel and Kim are back to catch up on all the Round 2 action from the Australian Open, which saw a 03:40am finish for Daniil Medvedev, the longest tiebreak in women’s Grand Slam history and a storming victory for young talent Mirra Andreeva over Ons Jabeur. With Elena Rybakina falling in epic fashion to Anna Blinkova, Iga Swiatek saving the day against Danielle Collins, and Jessie Pegula and Maria Sakkari falling in straight sets to unseeded opponents, it has been a topsy-turvy round for female seeds.  Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic came through a rough 4 set battle with Aussie Alexei Popyrin (and the crowd!), Daniil Medvedev played all night to comeback in 5 and Holger Rune’s tournament hopes end ed at the hands of French wildcard Arthur Cazaux. They also touch upon the introduction of a ‘party court’ at the AO, and the recent announcement of Rafa Nadal as the Saudi Tennis Federation Ambassador. 2024/01/16
Hot! Hot! Hot! A historic Sunday start and the first round is now (finally) in the bag. Join Joel and Chris as they look back on all the action from the first three days including Caroline Garcia's outstanding serving display to oust the returning Naomi Osaka, Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova's shock exit and Novak Djokovic getting pushed like never before in Round 1 of a Grand Slam. They also assess the Brit performances where there were highs (Raducanu's return!), lows (Murray's performance) and Jack Draper vomming into a bin. Lovely! There's also news of Alexander Zverev's trial date set for during the French Open and a polite debate on the merits of the Australian Open's new rule to allow fans in at the end of every game. Additionally, the Tennis Weekly duo reveal their Collect-A-Set player pick predictions, which have already gone one better than Kim's... New season! Nadal OUT, Germany triumph, Osaka + Raducanu return
2024/01/09
In their first catch up of the 2024 season, Joel, Kim and Chris are back to round up the first week of action on the ATP and WTA tours, including Germany’s dramatic victory over Poland to win the United Cup in Sydney and the exciting return of Rafa Nadal and Naomi Osaka in Brisbane. With Elena Rybakina winning in supreme fashion in Brisbane, Iga Swiatek continuing her win streak at the United Cup and Coco Gauff defending her Auckland title, the women’s field is hotting up as we approach the first Grand Slam of the year. Meanwhile, Rafa reappeared on tour in Brisbane only to withdraw from the Australian Open with a new onset injury, whilst Emma Raducanu also took her first steps back on court with a return in Auckland. They also discuss the recent controversy surrounding the varying (and debatably damaging) tennis balls used on tour, and Rodionova’s wildcard snub at the hands of Tennis Australia, whilst the trio also boldly predict their Slam and Olympic Champions for the season as well as the Year End No.1’s.
