We at Porsche (stay in business by consulting) — The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 47
2022/04/19
First off, BIG NEWS! The Carmudgeon Show is getting its own channel thanks to the Hagerty Podcast Network. Visit https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCik2... to subscribe to the new channel. Now back to the last episode from ISSIMI. Who are Porsche’s customers? Old white guys who drive 911s? Yes. Soccer moms who drive Macans and Cayennes? Absolutely. Airbus? Also yes. Harley-Davidson? You bet. Volvo? Definitely. Lada? You guessed it. From almost the beginning, Porsche has been a company that does engineering work for hire. It keep excess engineering capacity busy which helps keep the lights on too. It also has made for some interesting collaborations, some of which are well-known, others are thoroughly obscure. In this episode, Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott discuss a number of these, ranging from the well-known like the Mercedes-Benz 500E and Audi RS2, to “under what rock did you look to find this?” like Linde forklifts, Airbus airliner cockpits, or the Lada Samara, the replacement of the 1200 which has been immortalized in Russian dashcam videos. So next time you accuse Porsche of selling out, check and make sure that they haven’t already designed a similar apparatus for someone else before, because chances are they probably have. Shocking EV Impressions — The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 46

#modelsplaid #rivianr1t #corvettezr1 #hondansx #300sel63 Is the Model S Plaid in fact under-braked? Does the off-road competency of the Rivian R1T matter for its market success? In this episode, Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott discuss the questions of the month relating to two of the most interesting EVs currently on the market, but quickly redeem themselves by discussing decades-old gasoline powered cars including Jason’s upcoming Revelations episode on the C4 Corvette ZR1, and Derek’s BTS episodes on the Honda NSX Type-R and Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3. Car Week Special — The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 45
2021/09/27
#ISSIMI #JasonCammmisa #DerekTamScott #CarmudgeonShow It’s car week! Or rather, it was car week when Jason and Derek recorded their first in-person Carmudgeon episode since before the pandemic. In this episode, they catch up on recent automotive happenings, as well as discussing Car Week and whether it’s worth making the pilgrimage to attend. Jason shares his impressions of both Derek’s Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce and the Ferrari 288 GTO that he drove, and Derek shares some observations about the future of market for collector and enthusiast cars, including which ones are likely to move in the future, and which ones whose best days may be behind them in terms of market interest. They discuss why a Jaguar D-Type is worth less than a McLaren F1 and this of course is logically followed by a discussion of BMW E30 vs 944  and then the VW ID4 because these two cannot stay on the same page for more than a few seconds. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Behind the Scenes of the Latest Videos: M3, LFA, NSX Type-R — The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 44
2021/06/14
In the latest and thoroughly overdue episode of The Carmudgeon Show, the boys spend an hour or so discussing their latest video projects: Jason’s just released Icons episode about the G80 M3 (which necessitates revisiting the E30 M3 and E46 M3 and of course the W201 Mercedes 190E 2.3-16), and Derek’s upcoming BTS with DTS episodes about the Lexus LFA and NA1 Honda NSX-R. They also discuss the recent rally they attended, which was not without drama (one car flew off a cliff) and their preferred type of driving and how certain cars are and aren’t suited to that. On that topic, Jason and Derek compare notes about the first generation NSX; Jason isn’t a huge fan, while Derek described the NSX-R as one of the best drives he’s ever had. In fact, Jason took a cashier’s check to buy a US-market NSX and came home empty handed because he wasn’t enthusiastic enough about how it drove. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Why We Love to Hate McLarens, Except the GOAT of Course (the F1) — The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 43
2021/04/07
It’s no secret that neither Jason nor Derek love contemporary McLarens, despite them being objectively quite good. In this episode, they discuss the reasons why they feel this way, and also how modern McLarens are like a variety of foods including mirepoix, Mexican food, and turkey soup. Incidentally the exact opposite of these reasons is why they are both so enthusiastic about the McLaren F1 and the upcoming T.50. Naturally, this content is preceded by and interlaced with requisite tangents about 911s, e-Golfs, and Mark I Volkswagens. Also of note is Derek mentioning not one but two rear-engined Porsches that he *doesn’t* like.  The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Some Car Companies Are Just Bad Parents — The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 42
2021/02/18
Automotive alliances and buy-outs are commonplace. Sometimes they go well: BMW did a great job of bringing back Mini in the early 2000s. Sometimes they go poorly: BMW did a terrible job with Rover during the same period. But BMW isn’t the only marque that’s done this, in fact most of the big players do: Ford with Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Volvo, GM with Saab, Chrysler with Lamborghini, Fiat with Lancia, Alfa Romeo, and Ferrari, Volkswagen with Lamborghini, Ducati, Bugatti, Bentley, the list goes on. In this episode, Jason and Derek discuss which marques are good parents, you know, the ones with happy, well-adjusted profitable and self-confident companylets, and which ones neglected, mismanaged, and otherwise stunted their charges with often tragic or fatal results. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Where is the Geographic Center of the Automotive Universe? — The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 41
2020/12/27
visit: www.issimi.com Where is the geographic center of gravity of the automobile industry? And what is a geographic center of gravity anyway?  In this episode, Jason and Derek discuss the idea that there’s a country at any given time that dominates the automotive industry, either in terms of technical innovation or marketplace impact. Jason suggests that it currently lies in Korea, and explains how Kia and Hyundai are breaking genuine ground, but also argues that there’s a shift happening back to America for the first time in many decades. But not to Detroit. The pair then explore the ways in which various countries have pushed the envelope of the automotive industry at various times, for example Japan with their sport compacts such as the Honda CRX and Prelude, Acura Integra, Nissan Sentra SE-R, and Nissan Pulsar, as well as the critical decision to design cars specifically for the American market, and build them here too such as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. They also discuss the various cars which mobilized entire countries including the Ford Model T, Volkswagen Beetle, Fiat 500, Citroen 2CV, and Mini. As far as America goes, the pair must return to the years before World War 2 to find genuine American technical innovation in the cars themselves, the Duesenberg Model J, for example, but the postwar market segmentation and marketing genius in America also receives honorable mention. Meanwhile, the pair asks whether and when countries like England, France, and Italy ever represented the center of the automotive universe and if so, when? And naturally, with this pair, a discussion of German cars is inevitable as well. Is this the end of the internal combustion engine? — The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 40
2020/12/27
visit: www.issimi.com Jason and Derek start this episode by discussing their upcoming video projects, on the Renault R5 Turbo 2 and the 1973 Porsche Carrera RS respectively. Derek is gobsmacked by the driving experience of the RS and Jason reluctantly admits that the 911 is one of the best driver’s cars of all time, despite his outspoken distaste for their pervasiveness. He also sings the praises of the upcoming Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder again, this time in the context of the sobering realization that the end of the internal combustion engine is on the horizon. California and the United Kingdom have both announced legislation to make the sale of internal combustion powered cars illegal starting in 2035, and Germany announced something similar for 2030 four years ago. The two discuss the benefits of and obvious drawbacks for enthusiasts of these upcoming laws, while Jason, who has been reading car magazines from the early 1980s, draws a parallel with the era when emissions and fuel economy standards changed the direction of cars forever 40 to 50 years ago, highlighting just how dire the “Malaise Era” was for enthusiasts. They also discuss how we managed to overcome that dark era, and how today’s darkness is offset by the exciting potential for electric cars, which are incredibly high performance and easier to maintain than today’s gasoline cars. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Long Drives, Long Gearing — The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 39
2020/10/20
Jason and Derek took a road trip in a Corolla and the car wasn’t great. Then they took one in an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and it *was* great. Jason also installed a factory retrofit digital instrument cluster for his Lotus Elise, as well as a modification from 034Motorsport which allowed him to achieve 1.07g of lateral acceleration from...his e-Golf!? Derek responds to a listener’s question about the difference between the Mercedes 400E and 500E, which starts a discussion about gearing and how it can make or break a car. Jason always prefers shorter gearing except for in one car. He also offers his typical insight into why a lot of manufacturers purposefully employ long gearing today, particularly 3rd gear, to meet drive by noise regulations. Jason then laments the long gearing in the Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder before unceremoniously declaring it possibly the finest sports car of all time. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. It’s back and so are we — The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 38
2020/10/02
The Carmudgeon Show is back! ...for now. And so too is the Nissan Z, and it’s a looker. But fear not, Jason and Derek are able to find things to complain about when it comes to the 400Z Proto. And speaking of complaining, they are less than enthusiastic about the heinous looks of the new G80 and G82 BMW M3 and M4. In the course of discussing updates, it emerges that Derek has bought his first EV, which launches a discussion about the Lucid Air, a spectacular, world-altering all-new EV which Jason describes as Tesla 2.0...and he seems to be genuinely excited about both the company and the car. He and Derek agree that the Porsche Taycan is a joke of a car compared to either the Lucid Air or the Tesla Model S. They also take the opportunity to discuss what’s next in terms of content: Jason is building a studio to use to make content for Hagerty, and Derek describes the mission of his new show, BTS (behind the scenes) with DTS, which is aimed at showcasing the old cars he loves to a new audience. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Extended length season finale! — The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 37
2020/07/22
It’s time we put you in charge of the subject matter — and we received hundreds of great questions. Many were remarkably intelligent, some were genuinely difficult to answer, and a few cracked us up. Either way, thanks to our awesome audience! This is the last episode for the first season of The Carmudgeon Show — and it’s the longest episode yet. Jason and Derek set their timer for 90 minutes and answered all of the audience questions they could — and only got halfway through their list.  One question was perhaps the most difficult to ask: Derek asks Jason to admit a secret he’s been harboring: what happens after summer break? You’ll have to listen to find out. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Jason’s deeply technical understanding, made possible by a lifelong obsession with cars, allows him to fully digest what’s going on within an automobile — and then put it into simple terms for others to understand. Also, a Master’s Degree in Law trained him to be impossible to argue with.   Derek Tam-Scott still tries. He’s a young automotive expert with old-man taste in cars, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering — which means he knows how to be civil to Jason. Or at least he tries. With a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced the world’s most iconic cars. And hated most of them.   Don't forget to visit: https://www.issimi.com/ ISSIMI Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/issimiofficial ISSIMI Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/issimiofficial/   Podcast available on:  ISSIMI Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/issimi-official ISSIMI Google Podcast: https://podcasts.google.com/?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5idXp6c3Byb3V0LmNvbS82OTU5MjYucnNz ISSIMI Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1FcYevGiXYFvfqhjg6noyP ISSIMI Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-carmudgeon-show/id1489576059 Support the show (http://www.issimi.com)

Gone in 2.5 seconds — The Carmudgeon Show — Ep. 36
2020/07/17
In this episode of the Carmudgeon show, Derek and Jason discuss fast cars. Or, more precisely, they complain about fast cars. Speed limits haven’t changed, so as cars get faster and faster, it just means we get to enjoy them less. Derek recently drove a Ferrari 488 Pista, the first Ferrari Jason thought was too fast. And yet Car and Driver Magazine just tested a BMW M8 that would crush the Pista in a drag race. The M8 Competition is a luxury barge that hits 60 mph in 2.5 seconds. Why would you want anything pleasurable to be over in two and a half seconds? The conversation meanders over to the Autobahn, which is where fast cars are their element — until they hit their nearly-universal speed limiters. Where’s the fun in that? At least the likelihood of being driven flat-out resulted in German cars’ technological superiority over most other cars. Like, say, American rental cars. Prodded by Derek, who knows far too many of Jason’s teenage-year demons, the conversation digresses into storytelling about the Pontiac Endurance Test, an under-warranty Chevrolet Cavalier that lasted 3 mere hours with a German at its helm before blowing its engine, and the Tale of Two Neons: a chronicle of chronic rental-car abuse. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. Which just makes them angrier and more bitter.
