Can what you believe actually hurt you? In Titus 1, Paul uses unusually strong language about false teachers because the stakes are higher than winning an argument. Bad teaching can confuse people, distort the gospel, divide the church, and produce unhealthy lives. Is spiritual warfare real? Ephesians 6 says the Christian life involves a battle that goes beyond what we can see. Paul tells the church that “we do not wrestle against flesh and blood,” and then gives Christians a picture of the armor God provides so that we can stand firm. What if you are not as alone as you feel? Many Christians hear the word discipleship and immediately feel a little tired. It can sound like one more thing we are supposed to add to an already full life. Where do you run when life feels unstable? Psalm 71 gives us a picture of someone facing affliction, accusation, aging, weakness, and uncertainty. The psalmist asks God to be a “rock of refuge” to which he can continually come. In other words, he asks God to be his home. This message explores how we often build homes for our anxious hearts through control, success, family stability, reputation, finances, or the dream of a life that cannot be shaken. But when affliction and accusation come, those homes cannot hold. The good news of Psalm 71 is not that Christianity promises an easy or stable life. It does not. The promise is that when life is not steady, someone is holding you. Jesus became the ultimate homeless exile, took the affliction and accusation our sin deserved, and opened the way for us to come home to God. What do we do about our grief, sorrow, and pain? In this message from the Invitations From God in the Psalms series, we look at Psalms 42 and 43 and God’s invitation to lament. These psalms give language to the experience of feeling spiritually dry, emotionally overwhelmed, and far from the comfort of God’s presence. Biblical lament is not faithlessness. Why is prayer so hard? Many Christians believe that God hears us, loves us, and welcomes us, but our actual prayer lives often feel distracted, awkward, inconsistent, or strained. Psalm 28 gives us a deeply honest picture of prayer. David cries out in desperation, asks for mercy, wrestles with the wicked, and eventually moves into praise and confidence in God. What do you do when you feel like you are sinking? Psalm 130 begins with a cry from the depths and becomes an invitation to wait for the Lord. This psalm teaches us how to pray honestly when we are overwhelmed by sin, sorrow, regret, or the brokenness of the world. It reminds us that if God kept a record of sins, none of us could stand, but with the Lord there is forgiveness. In this message, we explore what it means to wait on God with hope. Waiting is not passive resignation. It is active trust. Like watchmen waiting for the morning, we wait because we know the dawn will come.
