How to Peak for a Competition - E.418
2026/09/30
Competition prep isn't just more training. It's a shift in how you train, recover, execute, and think like an athlete. In this episode, Drew and Paige break down how competition prep differs from the offseason, from building volume and intensity through Hell Week to eventually turning that fitness into pacing, strategy, and repeatable execution.
We get into recovery, athlete IQ, competition simulation, movement and strength variance, working around aches and injuries, preparing for known versus unknown events, and why the goal isn't to predict the test. It's to prepare the athlete who has to take it. Colin joins the conversation with questions on programming, standards, weaknesses, damage control, and some of the situations that come up when competition gets close.

Your plan is too complicated // Simple ≠ Easy - E.417
2026/09/23
The habits that drive progress are often simple. Executing them consistently is the hard part. This week, we explore why that difficulty sends us searching for new diets, supplements, and training programs before we’ve given the basics a chance to work.
Starting with nutrition, sleep, and daily routines, we discuss why knowing what to do doesn’t always translate into doing it. Then we bring the conversation into competitive CrossFit: chasing elaborate movements, confusing novelty with progress, and overlooking how much better we can get at foundational skills. We break down why adding complexity can dilute a workout’s stimulus, why elite athletes still hammer the basics, and how thoughtful programming makes a complex sport clearer for the athlete.

Confidence is Proof: My climb to Semifinals / Lindsey Hoffmann - E.415
2026/09/09
Back-to-back CrossFit Semifinals athlete Lindsey Hoffman joins Drew and Paige to discuss the decade of work behind her rise from affiliate member to elite competitor.
Lindsey shares how she found CrossFit, became a Misfit athlete, transitioned from teaching PE to running Blackfin CrossFit, and finally broke through to the Semifinals after years of steady progress. The conversation explores the confidence she gained from competing at Syndicate Crown and the NorCal Classic, learning to move on from bad events, closing the gap on strength, and why she believes she belongs alongside the best athletes in the sport.
Before the interview, Drew breaks down two common movement faults showing up in the current training phase: making yourself shorter at the catch on the rower and overextending during the back squat. He also shares details on the new Comp Plus weekly coaching calls.

The Unsexiest Secret in the Universe - E.414
2026/09/02
Every year, Misfit Athletics chooses a new rallying cry. This one has been hiding in plain sight for years.
Drew and Paige unpack the arrival fallacy, why reaching the next goal never changes us for as long as we expect, and why athletes keep abandoning the proven path for the latest shiny side quest. They break down the 99 and the 1, how process creates proof and proof creates confidence, and what to do when injuries, comparison, uncertainty, or “scary season” threaten to pull you off course.
Paige also reflects on the decade of work behind becoming a top-10 Games athlete and why her best results came from simplifying, adapting, and continuing to show up.
At the center of it all is the new rallying cry that will define the 2027 Misfit Athletics season.

2026/08/26
The 2027 CrossFit season starts here.
Phase 1 of Misfit Athletics is an eight-week training block built to establish the strength, skill, conditioning, and athlete IQ you’ll carry through the rest of the season. In this episode, Drew and Paige break down the structure of the phase, the Variable Training System, mandatory vs. individualized work, strength progressions, gymnastics, accessory work, monostructural conditioning, the Misfit Gears system, and how to choose the work that actually moves the needle for you.
Colin joins the show to ask the questions a new Misfit might have, including how to personalize the program, work around competitions and qualifiers, choose weaknesses to prioritize, and get the most out of Phase 1.
If you’re planning to compete in the 2027 CrossFit season, this is where the work begins.

Listener Q&A: Volume, Intensity, Strength v. Endurance, Weakness work, Bodyweight, and more... E.411
2026/08/19
On this week’s episode of the Misfit Podcast, Drew and Paige answer questions from the Misfit community and cover a wide range of training topics as we wrap up Phase 0 and get ready for the start of the 2027 season.
We dig into the balance between intensity and volume, force-based versus frequency-based endurance, how to prioritize gymnastics weaknesses, building strength and power without losing conditioning, finding an optimal competition bodyweight, and the minimum effective dose for Zone 2. We also talk about whether burpees belong in the Gears Matrix, share the stories behind some classic Misfit benchmark workout names, break down calories versus meters and drag factor on the Concept2, discuss how often competitive athletes should compete throughout the year, and answer a bigger-picture question about what actually makes a training program successful.
Plus, we mix in some life updates, Drew’s current bodybuilding experiment, and a reminder about why your wearable can give you useful data but can’t tell you how you actually feel.

2026/08/12
Phase 1: Basecamp marks the start of the next evolution of Misfit Affiliate. Drew, Hunter, and Paige break down the seven-week phase, including front squats, toes-to-bar, running, and daily conditioning, before digging into the new workout leveling and class plans designed to give coaches more structure without taking the coaching out of their hands. CrossFit Games Programming Breakdown '26 - E.410
2026/08/05
Drew and Paige break down all 20 events from the 2026 CrossFit Games, examining the movement selection, time domains, workload, strategy, and historical callbacks that shaped the competition. They discuss which events delivered as tests and spectacles, what the programming reveals about the evolution of elite CrossFit athletes, and how accumulated fatigue, adaptability, athlete IQ, mental toughness, and coaching influenced the final standings. Was the 20th-anniversary programming a complete test of fitness, or are Drew and Paige simply too deep in the sport to know what makes good television?

Coach Q&A: The Future of Misfit, Why Athletes Fail, Old-School CrossFit, Remote Coaching... E.407
2026/07/15
In this coach-focused Q&A, Drew and Paige answer questions submitted by Misfit Athletics apprenticeship applicants and pull back the curtain on coaching, competing, programming, and the future of Misfit.
They discuss why some athletes continue progressing while others disappear, how old-school CrossFit intensity compares to modern training, the importance of athlete IQ, and why more training is not always better. They also break down the biggest mistakes in remote coaching, the difference between individualized programming and actual coaching, balancing competition with a normal life, and how emotional health can affect athletic performance.
Whether you are an athlete, coach, or aspiring programmer, this episode offers an honest look at what it takes to improve, build trust, and succeed for the long haul.

How to Get Stronger in CrossFit: The 4 Athlete Archetypes - E.406
2026/07/08
Getting stronger in CrossFit sounds simple: lift weights, add load, repeat. But athletes rarely get stuck for the same reason.
In this episode, Drew and Paige break down four common strength archetypes we see in competitive CrossFit athletes: the GPP monster who hopes the barbell stays light, the naturally strong athlete who moves poorly, the one-rep-max strong athlete who can’t express it in workouts, and the volume monster doing too much to actually adapt.
We talk through how to identify where you fit, what kind of training each athlete actually needs, and why the path to getting stronger is not always as simple as doing more heavy lifting.
If you’re a coach trying to solve strength problems for your athletes, or an athlete trying to figure out why the barbell still feels like the limiter, this one is for you.

Kenzie Riley: Still in Game. Motherhood, Masters & gray area between competing and moving on - E.405
2026/07/02
Kenzie Riley is back on the Misfit Podcast to talk about the messy middle between being all-in and being done. She joins Drew and Paige to unpack her return to the Masters competition season, the realities of training inside a packed life, motherhood, imposter syndrome, and why the competitive fire does not disappear just because priorities change.
From technical difficulties and bike cool-downs to bigger questions around identity, return on investment, and showing up with whatever time you have, this conversation is a reminder that there is a lot of room between perfect preparation and walking away.

New Misfit Affiliate Phase: The Compound P.2 - E.404
2026/06/24
In this episode, Drew sits down with Paige Semenza and Hunter Wood to break down The Compound Part 2, Misfit Affiliate’s next seven-week training phase. The crew walks through the bigger picture behind the phase, including heavy back squats and overhead pressing, strict pulling, intentional conditioning, continued running, and the return of Engine Class Sundays.
They also dig into the why behind the structure: how affiliate programming can build real strength without losing the conditioning, skill development, and class experience that make CrossFit work. From squat mechanics and strict pull-up progressions to coaching nuance and long-term athlete development, this episode gives coaches and athletes a clear look at what’s coming and how to get the most out of it.
