Nightmare Fuel: Franchise Edition
2026/10/10
Thirty-two sci-fi and horror franchises enter. Dinosaurs, aliens, giant monsters, undead nightmares, questionable experiments, and things that probably should have stayed buried all have a shot at the crown. But which franchise can survive when the competition gets fierce? For this round of Pop Culture Roulette, the franchises were seeded using their estimated cumulative revenue before going head-to-head in a bracket that puts some of the biggest names in sci-fi and horror against some seriously underrated contenders. From Jurassic Park and Godzilla to Tremors, Hellraiser, The X-Files, and plenty of wonderfully weird choices, there are no guaranteed winners just because a franchise has made a mountain of money. Which series has the staying power, the memorable monsters, and the legacy to outlast the competition? Which heavyweights stumble, and which underdogs make an unexpected run? Nicholas, Jeremy, and Justin settle the arguments the only way PCR can: one matchup at a time, with plenty of debate along the way. Give it a listen, pick your own winner, and let us know which franchise you think deserved to take the whole thing! #PopCultureRoulette #Smashland #PCR #NightmareFuel #SciFiHorror #HorrorMovies #SciFi #MovieFranchises #BracketBattle #Godzilla #JurassicPark #ResidentEvil #Alien #Predator #TheThing #TheXFiles #CreatureFeature #HorrorFans #SciFiFans #MovieBracket #HorrorCommunity #CultClassics #MonsterMovies #PopCulture #BracketChallenge #HorrorLegends #MovieShowdown #FranchiseFaceOff
Dracula: The Ultimate Bracket
2026/10/03
Fangs, capes, castles, creepy accents, and an absolutely unreasonable number of ways to say “I vant to suck your blood.” This time on Pop Culture Roulette, the crew puts the most famous vampire in history head-to-head in a bracket featuring Draculas from movies, television, and video games. From the legendary classics to modern interpretations, the question is simple: who actually played Dracula best? There are icons, oddballs, animated versions, game characters, and a few choices that might make you stop and say, “Wait… THAT guy played Dracula?” Every matchup gets dissected, debated, and sent back into the coffin until only one Count remains standing. And with a field this stacked, making it to the final rounds is no guarantee. Some familiar faces fall surprisingly early, while a few unexpected contenders make a serious run at the throne. So grab your garlic, avoid eye contact with any suspiciously pale strangers, and join Pop Culture Roulette for a battle of the bloodsuckers as we determine Dracula: The Ultimate Bracket. Who deserved the cape? Who got the shaft? And which Dracula ultimately proves that there can be only one Count? Listen, follow, subscribe, and let us know which Dracula would have gotten your vote. #PopCultureRoulette #Smashland #PCR #Dracula #DraculaBracket #Vampires #Horror #ClassicHorror #HorrorMovies #PopCulture #Bracket #MovieBracket #TV #VideoGames #Halloween
Please Don't Look This Up
2026/09/26
Please Don't Look This UpThe Streisand Effect Want to make something more popular? Tell everyone they’re not allowed to see it. In this episode of Pop Culture Roulette, the crew dives into the Streisand Effect — that wonderfully backwards phenomenon where trying to hide, ban, delete, or suppress something somehow makes everybody way more interested in it. Movies get shelved. Songs get banned. Episodes disappear. Websites get taken down. Celebrities, studios, corporations, and even governments have all tried to make things go away… only to discover that the internet has a pretty serious case of “Oh yeah? Now I REALLY want to see it.” The crew digs into some of the stranger, lesser-known, and downright bizarre examples of the phenomenon, along with a few stories that prove there may be no better way to attract attention than desperately insisting that nobody pay attention. So whatever you do… don't look this up. Seriously. Please. And while you're ignoring that advice, give the episode a listen, tell us which examples caught you off guard, and let us know what other great examples of the Streisand Effect we missed. #PopCultureRoulette #Smashland #PCR #StreisandEffect #PopCulture #PopCulturePodcast #Censorship #InternetCulture #Banned #Deleted #Cancelled #Forbidden #Viral #Movies #Music
The Movie That Wouldn’t Come Out
2026/09/20
The Movie That Wouldn’t Come Out It started with Coyote vs. Acme. A finished movie gets shelved. Everyone assumes it may never see the light of day. And then, somehow, it escapes the vault and finally makes it to audiences. That got the crew wondering: how many other movies have gone through this? Some movies have a release date. Some have a trailer. Some have a cast, a budget, and a finished product sitting in the can. And then... they just don't come out. This week, Pop Culture Roulette digs into the strange stories behind movies that got stuck in Hollywood limbo — why they were shelved, what went wrong, and perhaps most importantly, how long it took before audiences finally got to see them. Studio problems. Distribution headaches. Changing release plans. Tax write-offs. Behind-the-scenes chaos. And whatever other Hollywood nonsense can keep a finished movie from seeing the light of day. Some waited months. Some waited years. Some waited so long that their original release date feels like ancient history. Because this is Pop Culture Roulette — where sometimes the biggest question isn't “Is the movie any good?” It's “Wait... why haven't they released this thing yet?” And, in the case of Coyote vs. Acme, the answer eventually became: they finally did. #PopCultureRoulette #PCR #Smashland #Movies #Hollywood #MovieHistory #ShelvedMovies #MovieTrivia #MovieRelease #FilmFans #PopCulture #CoyoteVsAcme
More Than a Memory
2026/09/05
Every now and then, pop culture loses someone who feels like they’ve always been part of the landscape. This week, Pop Culture Roulette takes a look at three of those people: Dolly Parton, Tim Curry, and Peter Cullen. We talk about the careers, characters, performances, and moments that made them unforgettable, from Dolly’s larger-than-life legacy to Tim Curry proving there may be no role he couldn’t completely own, to Peter Cullen giving a voice to one of the most iconic characters in pop culture history. And because the past few months have been particularly brutal, we also take some time to remember the many other familiar faces we’ve lost along the way. From there, the conversation gets a little more chaotic: Who are the celebrities everybody seems to love? When does an actor completely disappear into a performance? And what happens when a character becomes so synonymous with the person who played them that you simply can’t separate the two? It’s a celebration of the people, performances, and characters that have become permanent parts of our pop-culture memories. Because the best of them don’t really leave us. They become more than a memory. Give it a listen, share it with someone who has a favorite performance they’ll never forget, and let us know who you think belongs in the conversation. #PopCultureRoulette #Smashland #PCR #PopCulture #DollyParton #TimCurry #PeterCullen #PopCultureLegends #CelebrityLegacy #MovieLegends #TVLegends
License to Bracket: The Spy Who Lied to Us
2026/08/29
License to Bracket: The Spy Who Lied to Us Justin pulled a fast one on the other two! After insisting he was never going to watch the James Bond movies, he secretly went on a mission to watch all of them—and then showed up with a bracket ranking the entire franchise. Before getting into the bracket, Justin has a confession to make: he watched the James Bond movies. All of them. After repeatedly insisting he had no interest in sitting through the entire franchise, Justin apparently decided the best course of action was to secretly binge his way through Bond history—and then surprise Nicholas and Jeremy with a bracket. With Justin suddenly armed with Bond knowledge, and Nicholas and Jeremy bringing their love of the franchise to the table, the three finally get to do what they’ve been waiting to do: argue about James Bond movies. They go movie by movie, debate their favorites, defend some questionable choices, and find out whether Justin’s secret Bond education has changed his opinions. It’s a surprise bracket, a long-awaited Bond debate, and proof that sometimes the best way to get someone to watch a movie franchise is to tell them they won’t. Give it a listen and let us know: which James Bond movie would win your bracket? #PopCultureRoulette #Smashland #PCR #LicenseToBracket #TheSpyWhoLiedToUs #MovieBrackets #PopCulture #JamesBond
What Was Our Name?
2026/08/08
Somehow, we’ve accidentally created a trilogy. First, we asked “What’s My Name?” Then we moved on to movies and their former titles. And now, because apparently we have learned absolutely nothing, we’re doing it again with bands in “What Was Our Name?” Just like the previous two episodes, we’ve turned the whole thing into a game. This time, we’re digging into bands that didn’t always go by the names we know today. We’ll uncover the names they started with, the names they almost became famous under, and the names they eventually left behind — and then see if we can figure out which bands were hiding behind them. Along the way, we get some questionable band names, some surprising name changes, and plenty of opportunities to wonder how anyone thought that was a good name in the first place. Is this technically a trilogy? Sure. Is it a trilogy anyone asked for? Absolutely not. But after “What’s My Name?” and our movie name-change game, we apparently decided there was one more chapter that needed to exist. So play along with us, test your music knowledge, and see how many of these bands you can identify before they became the bands we know today. Give it a listen, keep score if you want, and let us know how you did. And as always, thanks for playing along with Pop Culture Roulette! #PopCultureRoulette #Smashland #PCR #Music #Bands #RockAndRoll #BandNames #MusicTrivia #PopCulture

What's My Name?
2026/07/25
Some names become legendary. The ones they were born with? Not always. This week on Pop Culture Roulette, we're back with another round of our trivia game—this time putting celebrity identities to the test. We reveal the real birth names behind some of the biggest stars in movies, music, and television, and the guys have to figure out which famous face they're really talking about. Some answers come easy, others leave everyone completely stumped, and a few real names are so ordinary you'll swear they can't possibly belong to a superstar. Play along from home and see if you can outscore the crew as we work through a lineup of famous names, surprising reveals, and plenty of hilarious wrong guesses along the way. Whether you're a movie buff, a music fan, or just love testing your pop culture knowledge, this episode is packed with fun surprises and enough trivia to keep you guessing until the very end. Think you can beat us? Give the episode a listen, then let us know how many you guessed correctly. What's My Title?
2026/07/18
Behind every iconic movie title is a trail of ideas that never made it to the marquee. This week on Pop Culture Roulette, we're dusting off Hollywood's discarded names in What's My Title? Nicholas puts Justin and Jeremy to the test with a game built around the original titles that famous films almost carried. For each round, only one option is the real title—the other two are convincing imposters designed to send everyone down the wrong path. Some alternate titles make perfect sense. Others will have you wondering what the studio was thinking. From forgotten working titles to bizarre near-misses, every choice offers a glimpse into the creative process behind some of cinema's biggest hits. Play along, keep score at home, and see if you can outsmart the guys before the final reveal. It's a celebration of movie history, a battle of pop culture knowledge, and a reminder that sometimes a great film is only one title away from being remembered very differently. If you enjoyed the episode, be sure to follow, rate, and review Pop Culture Roulette wherever you listen to podcasts. The Hurt Business: Wisconsin's Biggest Trades
2026/07/04
The Giannis trade hurts. There's no way around it. Rather than spending an hour dwelling on what happened, we decided to do what Wisconsin sports fans have always done: look back at history and remind ourselves that we've survived heartbreaking trades before. From the Packers to the Brewers to the Bucks, we revisit some of the biggest blockbuster deals in Wisconsin professional sports history to see how they were received at the time, how they ultimately played out, and whether the pain ever truly faded. Can history help put the Giannis trade into perspective? Does losing a generational superstar automatically become the biggest heartbreak, or have Wisconsin fans endured even tougher goodbyes over the years? We debate the deals that changed franchises, reshaped championship dreams, and left lasting scars on fan bases while trying to answer one question: does looking back make moving forward any easier? Whether you're still processing the news or just love talking Wisconsin sports history, join us as we revisit the biggest trades the state has ever seen—and try to convince ourselves that this one might not hurt forever. If you enjoy the show, be sure to follow, subscribe, and share Pop Culture Roulette. We'd love to hear which Wisconsin trade you think was the toughest to accept. #PopCultureRoulette #PCR #Smashland #WisconsinSports #MilwaukeeBucks #GreenBayPackers #MilwaukeeBrewers #SportsHistory #SportsPodcast #NBA #NFL #MLB

Rules of the Franchise
2026/06/13
Before we can argue about the best franchises in pop culture, we first have to answer a much more difficult question: what actually qualifies as a franchise in the first place? But before we get there, the conversation takes a detour into the changing landscape of traditions. From local customs and community events to some of the recent changes around the NFL, we discuss how things evolve over time and whether some of the experiences we grew up with are slowly fading away. Is change inevitable, or are we losing something along the way? Once we get to the heart of the episode, it's time to lay the groundwork for future Pop Culture Roulette debates. We set out to establish a baseline for what makes an entertainment property a true franchise. Is it simply having multiple entries? Do spin-offs count? What role do merchandise, expanded universes, reboots, and cultural impact play? Can a property become a franchise without ever reaching mainstream popularity? The questions are easy—the answers, not so much. As the discussion unfolds, we quickly discover that drawing lines in pop culture is harder than it sounds. Definitions get challenged, exceptions emerge, and gray areas become the norm. Which means we're probably setting ourselves up for plenty of future arguments, but that's a problem for another episode. And because we apparently weren't making things complicated enough, we also take a swing at defining the differences between sci-fi, sci-fantasy, and sci-horror. What separates science fiction from fantasy with futuristic paint? When does horror become the dominant genre? Are some of our favorite movies and series sitting right on the border between all three? We attempt to make sense of the labels that fans have been debating for decades. This episode may not settle every argument, but it does establish the rules we'll be using when those arguments inevitably arrive. Listen now and join the conversation! What qualifies as a franchise in your book? And where do you draw the line between sci-fi, sci-fantasy, and sci-horror? #PopCultureRoulette #PCR #Smashland #Podcast #Entertainment #PopCulture #MoviePodcast #TVPodcast #SciFi #ScienceFiction #Fantasy #Horror #Franchise #GeekCulture #NerdCulture #NFL #PodcastDiscussion #FilmDiscussion #Gaming #Comics #Fandom #GenreDebate
Quest for Second Place: The Jessica Bracket
2026/06/06
Quest for Second Place: The Jessica Bracket Some competitions start with a wide-open field. This one started with a champion already crowned. With Jessica firmly holding the undisputed number-one spot in our personal rankings, this week on Pop Culture Roulette we turned our attention to a much tougher question: who deserves second place? To find out, we assembled a bracket featuring famous Jessicas from across movies, television, music, and pop culture and put them head-to-head in a battle for the silver medal. Each matchup forced us to consider career accomplishments, cultural impact, memorable performances, and just how much these Jessicas have shaped the entertainment landscape. Some choices came easily, others sparked heated debate, and a few results challenged our expectations as the bracket narrowed toward a single finalist. In the end, only one contender could emerge as the greatest Jessica not named Jessica. Whether your favorite made a deep run or suffered an early upset, this episode is packed with laughs, nostalgia, and plenty of spirited discussion about some of pop culture's most recognizable names. Listen along, fill out your own bracket, and let us know who you think deserved the runner-up spot. Did we get it right, or was your Jessica robbed of her chance at second place? The NFL Cinematic Universe
2026/05/24
The NFL schedule release videos have officially become their own form of entertainment… so naturally we had to break them down like they were blockbuster movie trailers. With Jeremy out this week, Justin and Nicholas took a deep dive into the weirdest, funniest, most over-the-top schedule reveals from around the league and debated which teams absolutely nailed it and which ones maybe should’ve left the editing software closed. From chaotic mascots to internet meme overload, the NFL somehow turned a spreadsheet into must-watch television. Of course, being Packers fans, we couldn’t stop there. After surviving the cinematic universe of schedule videos, we rolled straight into a full Green Bay Packers season prediction episode. Game-by-game picks, bold takes, moments of panic, unreasonable optimism, and at least one matchup that immediately turned into an argument — everything you’d want from two fans trying to talk themselves into a Super Bowl run before Week 1 even exists. It’s part football analysis, part comedy roast, and part proof that sports fans will absolutely convince themselves of anything in May. So grab your playbook, your conspiracy board, and maybe a cheesehead while we try to figure out what the 2026 NFL season might actually look like. Listen now wherever you get your podcasts, join the debate with your own season predictions, and tell us which schedule release video deserved the Lombardi Trophy. #PopCultureRoulette #Smashland #PCR #NFL #Packers #GreenBayPackers #FootballPodcast #NFLScheduleRelease #ScheduleRelease #NFL2026 #SportsTalk #Podcast #SportsPodcast #Cheesehead #NFLFans #FootballSeason #PackersNation
