Listening & Reading by Moonrise
2026/09/29
This iteration of Clockshop's “Reading and Listening by Moonrise” took place in David Horvitz’s 7th Ave Garden during the September full moon. Curated by artist/writer Vanessa Holyoak, the event explored nighttime ecologies through a series of readings and performances that consider how undefined and opaque conditions are heightened by the night. Artists and writers shared language and sound in conversation with the invisible links between natural events such as oceanic tides, celestial bodies, and the electromagnetic fields within the space of the garden, offering an occasion for collective listening under the light of the moon. Reading & Listening by Moonrise is a seasonal series held on the eve of the full moon (or as close to it as possible), featuring performances and immersive sound experiences with multidisciplinary sound and performance artists, writers, and poets. This program offers listeners moments of reflection, connection, and joy within a community-centered green space. Closing Reception for 'Songs of Emerging Endangerment'
2026/02/23
The closing of ‘Songs of Emerging Endangerment’ featured a dynamic panel conversation with scholars and artists who study the histories and cultures of the Asian Pacific diaspora. ‘Songs of Emerging Endangerment’ is an installation by TJ Shin an artist born in South Korea who now lives in Los Angeles. TJ explores how power shapes our lives and experiences, using sound and sculpture to explore their ideas. This installation emits sound from an air raid siren, a tool once used across LA to warn the city about incoming danger. Every hour, it plays recordings of people imitating the calls of birds that migrate through the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, a path that crosses East and Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. The participants in the project are people with connections to the regions where these birds live and travel. LA County is home to 1.5 million people with roots in East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Pacific Islands. Sharing imitated birdcalls through this siren is a way to invite listeners—like you!—to reflect on movement, memories, and meaning across time and distances.
