Capital Repertory Theater debuts the new play 'The Last American Newspaper' by Ken Tingley on 9/25

For more than four decades, Ken Tingley worked in community newspapers, including as editor of the 'Post Star' in Glens Falls. Now he's turned that experience into a play, 'The Last American Newspaper,' which opens Friday at the Capitol Repertory Theater in Albany. Based on true events, the drama takes audiences inside a newsroom confronting the changing economics of journalism, the rise of the internet, and the challenges facing local newspapers.It follows journalists pursuing stories ranging from the opioid epidemic to a Pulitzer Prize, while asking what happens to communities when local news disappears. Ken Tingley joins us this morning to talk about journalism, theater, and his transition from editor to playwright.

We get a preview of the NYS Capital District Walk for Pancreatic Cancer - this year marking their 23rd anniversary. The event will be held in Elm Avenue Town Park in Delmar from 8 AM – Noon on Sunday, September 27th.They will surpass $2 million in cumulative funds raised. According to the Lustgarten Foundation, this milestone means the local efforts in the Capital District have raised enough to fully fund a clinical trial.The walks benefits the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research.100% of Walk donations fund pancreatic cancer research and help make the Lustgarten Foundation the world’s largest private funder of pancreatic cancer research.

The 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire is remembered as one of the defining tragedies of American labor history, but historian and former journalist DavidConrad-Pérez argues there is another largely overlooked story in its aftermath. His new book, ‘Fire in the Heart of the City: The Triangle Shirtwaist Tragedy and the Origins of Modern Charity,’ examines the struggle between labor organizers and New York's wealthy civic leaders over how the city should respond and how that battle helped shape modern philanthropy and social welfare.
