In Legal Terms: Voting Rights History and Future
2026/10/08
What’s really going on and how did we get here? We need some explanation. Our guest today is Kevin T. Morris, co-authored An American Problem: How the Country Built—and the Supreme Court Broke—the Voting Rights Act. Let’s learn together. Today’s Legal Terms on In Legal Terms are: PRECLEARANCE, VOTE DILUTION, RACIAL TURNOUT GAP If you don’t know, yallvote.ms is a short cut for the web address of the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office. There were some issues reported on the validity of the voter registration information given out – but y’all need to check for yourself. You can type in your zip code and street address and get your sample ballot. I bet you’ll see more races than you thought. We’re past the voter registration deadline, but you can check to see if they have your correct information so’ll you’ll be prepared when you go to the polls on November 3rd. Remember – if you get to the polls and something is wrong – you don’t have your ID, you are listed as registered, ASK to CAST a affidavit ballot – then you can get it all straighten out later. How about a signed copy of the book and listen to the author do a reading? The event: Kevin Morris In conversation with Zakiya Summers is Wednesday, October 14th The signing is at 5:00 PM; the reading is at 5:30 PM at Lemuria Books in Jackson Hosted on Acast. 2026/10/01
Let’s learn what’s the difference among arbitration, mediation, and negotiation with former United States Magistrate Judge and current mediator and arbitrator Keith Ball. Today’s Legal Terms on In Legal Terms are: ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION, MEDIATION, ARBITRATION You can have authority over the most powerful country in the world but maybe only before Monday. Monday, October 5th is the deadline to register to vote in the next federal and statewide election. We’ll be deciding who Mississippi and your neighborhood sends to Washington to represent our interests and our beliefs. You also have a voice in judges in Mississippi and possibly other important special elections for your area. Today and tomorrow: Circuit Clerks’ offices MAY remain open from 8:00 a.m. until 7 p.m., including the noon hour. Saturday, October 3rd 2026: Circuit Clerks’ offices MUST remain open from 8:00 a.m. until noon. Monday, October 5th is the Voter Registration Deadline: Applicants who register in-person in the Circuit Clerk’s office or Municipal Clerk’s office, and those who mail registration applications post-marked no later than the 5th are eligible to vote in the General Election. Yall vote . ms is an easy to remember website of the Secretary of State’s office with additional information or if you want to fact check me! The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that a group of Jackson plaintiffs do not have a right to uncontaminated drinking water, nor to honest information about it from public officials. If that strikes you as strange, you’re not alone. On the most recent episode, of At Issue, former In Legal Terms’ guest, Jade Craig, assistant professor at the University of Mississippi School of Law discusses common misunderstandings about the concept of rights. In Legal Terms: In the News 2026
2026/09/10
We like to schedule an “In the News” episode every so often so Liz can get her questions answered. Have you listened to the news or read a phrase and wondered – “what’s that about”? Liz will get her questions answered and so will listeners from our guest: attorney Francis Springer from Springer Law Firm. Do you think it’s too early to start thinking about the next election? Voting starts in eleven days. Absentee voting begins Monday, September 21st. Monday, October 5th is the voter registration deadline. Absentee ballots that are returned by mail must be postmarked on or before election day: November 3rd 2026. According to NPR as heard on our station this morning: At the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, President Trump made a stunning and implausible pledge: to send every American adult a $5,000 cash dividend. But only if his party maintains control of the House and the Senate in November's midterms. . . . Quick math puts the bill for this proposed "dividend" at more than $1 trillion. Plus, it's illegal to pay or be paid to influence voting. Francis was an inspiration for a segment of our show! One day on social media, Francis mentioned: the Posse Commitatus Act. Liz had no idea what that was. No clue. So, we started: Legal Terms on In Legal Terms. And we made a little YouTube short when Francis was on the show when we talked about “what’s in the news” That is the most watched short video on MPB’s YouTube Channel. In Legal Terms, the show where we break down the law, explain how it works, and help make it a little less intimidating for everyday Mississippians is hosted by attorney Adam Kilgore (usually).
