Heart of Darkness Part V - The Unnamed
2026/09/15
The final pages of Heart of Darkness ask some timeless questions about the characters in the story and human nature. How should we think about Marlow's character development or lack of it? What's the best way to understand Kurtz? What makes demagogues effective? And maybe the greatest question of all: do we finally figure out what the heart of darkness is?
This is the final part in a series on Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. It covers all of chapter 3 to the end of the book. Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1899) is both a scathing critique of European imperialism and a reminder that all humans have the capacity to succumb to the heart of darkness. It also is not without controversy, as people have been debating it's meaning and essence for over a century now.

Heart of Darkness Part IV - The Earth Seemed Unearthly
2026/08/25
"The earth seemed unearthly." The character of Kurtz in Heart of Darkness is one of the most enigmatic depictions of villainy in modern times. By the time Marlow reaches Kurtz' compound, his reality has completely been dismantled. Nothing is stable and everything he thinks he knows is subject to deconstruction. Author Joseph Conrad uses doubles, paradoxes, and ironies to show Kurtz as both representative and enemy of the civilizing mission. Admist the confusion and chaos, Marlow outlines his controversial views of the people he sees in the Congo, while we as readers ask ourselves to what extent is the evil represented in Heart of Darkness representative of a universal condition?
This episode is part 4 in a larger series on Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. It covers all of chapter 2, right up until the fateful moment where Marlow comes face to face with Kurtz. Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1899) is both a scathing critique of European imperialism and a reminder that all humans have the capacity to succumb to the heart of darkness. It also is not without controversy, as people have been debating it's meaning and essence for over a century now.

Heart of Darkness Part III - Belief and Reality
2026/08/04
As Marlow travels deeper into the heart of darkness, we get our first look at the enigmatic Kurtz. At first just a peripheral figure who is important to the ivory collection operation of the nameless "Company," Kurtz comes to occupy more of Marlow's thoughts the further into the Congo he goes. Marlow also meets the characters of the Manager and the Brickmaker, who put different theories of authoritarianism and imperialism to the test. How complicit was the average grunt in the imperial operation?
This episode is part 3 in a larger series on Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. It covers the end of chapter one and the beginnings of Marlow's crisis at the intersection of belief and reality. Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1899) is both a scathing critique of European imperialism and a reminder that all humans have the capacity to succumb to the heart of darkness. It also is not without controversy, as people have been debating it's meaning and essence for over a century now.

Episode 178: Heart of Darkness Part II - Ideological Mimesis
2026/07/14
As Marlow prepares for his journey to the Congo, he visits a psychiatrist who gives him his first glimpse at what he is getting himself into. His introduction into the pseudoscience of phrenology is an ideological starting point for his journey to Africa. Reader and character alike are hit with a wave of disorienting feelings as Marlow has his first interactions with the people of Congo, seeing how they are dehumanized. In the modern day, controversy rages around whether this depiction of Africans represents author Joseph Conrad's view, a larger western view that has been enshrined in the study of history, or just the viewpoint of a character in a book.
This is the second episode in a series on Heart of Darkness. It covers most of Chapter 1 of the book, Marlow's journey to Africa, and his first interactions with the people of the Congo. We also discuss Chinua Achebe's famous critique of the book. Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1899) is both a scathing critique of European imperialism and a reminder that all humans have the capacity to succumb to the heart of darkness. It also is not without controversy, as people have been debating it's meaning and essence for over a century now.

Heart of Darkness Part I - The Paradox of History
2026/06/23
Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1899) is both a scathing critique of European imperialism and a reminder that all humans have the capacity to succumb to the heart of darkness. It also is not without controversy, as people have been debating it's meaning and essence for over a century now. What exactly is the heart of darkness? Was the Belgian Congo a unique circumstance of imperialism or just another example of human nature at work? Is the text of Heart of Darkness a legitimate critique of the imperial mindset, or is it actually just upholding the very norms and imperialistic conventions it is ostensibly dismantling?
This is the first episode in a series covering the book. It provides an overview of the historical context of European imperialism in Africa, including the ivory and rubber boom in the Congo. We also set the ideological stage for the narrative of the book. The civilizing mission is discussed and we wonder if we are all just prisoners of our own historical moment? Was european imperialism just another cycle of histories that have already happened long ago? We also dive into Marlow's origins, back story, and recruitment with "The Company."

Congo's Nightmare Part VII - The Great Forgetting
2026/05/12
The Congo Free State eventually dissolved, but what does it mean to us today? How did we collectively forget a tragedy on this scale? Why do some historical stories get buried in the sands of time while others don't? Historian Adam Hochschild calls our memory of the Congo Free State the "Great Forgetting." This is the final episode in the Belgian Congo series. Thanks for listening.

Congo's Nightmare Part VI - The End of the Congo Free State
2026/04/21
As atrocities and human rights violations continue in the Congo Free State, King Leopold II of Belgium sends out a "Commission of Inquiry" to the Congo to clear his name. Things don't go as planned. After one final hail mary attempt to sway public opinion, Leopold finally agrees to sell his colony to the state of Belgium. For many, the long nightmare was now over. For others, it was only beginning.
This is Part 6 in a series on the Congo Free State. It covers how Leopold lost control of his colony, some of his last ditch attempts to maintain it for himself, the transition to Belgian Colonial Rule, and a brief history of Congo after independence. The last episode will cover what historian Adam Hochschild calls "The Great Forgetting."

Congo's Nightmare Part V - Shadow War
2026/03/31
As the evidence of atrocities in the Congo Free State became impossible to ignore, direct African resistance developed in numerous places around the Congo. As this was happening, a large and sophisticated human rights campaign developed around some courageous informants, journalists, and human rights activists. King Leopold II of Belgium then developed a response in one of the first modern versions of an information/misinformation shadow war in the age of mass media.
This episode is Part 5 in a series on the Belgium Congo. It discusses African Resistance to the Congo Free State, E.D. Morel's media campaign to end the atrocities in the Congo, other informants like Roger Casement, King Leopold's response to the accusations, the role of media in shaping perceptions in Belgium, the most successful feat of pimpery of all time, and why much of this seems very modern. Future episodes will cover the end of the Congo Free State and it's ultimate legacy.

Congo's Nightmare Part IV - The Rubber Boom
2026/03/10
As a result of a worldwide rubber boom where rubber became a highly demanded economic resource, the agents of the Congo Free State kicked off efforts to gain as much rubber and profit as possible-leading to some of the worst human rights violations in history. Forced labor, slavery, disease, and death highlight this part of the story.
This episode is Part 4 in a series on the Belgian Congo. It discusses the impact of the late 19th century rubber boom on the people of Congo, the resulting human tragedy, the death toll in the Congo, the psychology of a typical Force Publique officer, and more. Future episodes will discuss resistance and protest movements that contributed to the end of the Congo Free State.

Episode 171: Congo's Nightmare Part III - Ivory Terror
2026/02/17
With King Leopold II of Belgium now in full control of the Belgian Congo, the extraction of ivory and other resources could begin. The story of the plunder of the Congo is so brutal and unbelievable, and at times so hard to believe, that it was once said that "to tell the full story it would have to be fiction." In the early period of the Congo Free State, forced labor and resource extraction ultimately led to atrocities and destruction, but the terror was far from over.
This episode is Part 3 in a series on the Belgian Congo. It gives an overview of Congo's rich natural resources, and the ivory boom in the late 1800's that contributed to atrocities. It discusses Leopold's style of rule and role in overseeing the carnage, the development of the ivory "trade" in the Congo, the beginnings of mass death, and the origins of early protest movements and dissent against the state, including from missionaries like George Washington Williams. Future episodes will discuss the rubber boom, it's related human rights meltdown, as well as resistance and protest movements that contributed to the end of the Congo Free State.

Congo's Nightmare Part II - A Slice of African Cake
2026/01/27
As European imperialism heated up in Africa in the late 1800's, King Leopold II of Belgium put into motion one of the most ambitious and villainous plans in all of European history - the theft of the entire Congo. Utilizing the work of explorer Henry Morton Stanley, European animus towards the Afro-Arab Slave Trade, the creation of dubious committees and associations, international lobbying of governments, public relations campaigns, and bogus treaties with the people of Congo, Leopold understood that "...we must be cautious, clever and quick to act. I would not expose myself to displeasing the English or letting escape a good opportunity to get some of this beautiful African cake." In 1885, the countries of Europe gave their blessing to Leopold's slice of cake at the Berlin Conference.
This episode is Part 2 in a series on the Belgian Congo. It takes a look at how Leopold II of Belgium went from being a monarch of tiny Belgium to the owner of the biggest European colony in Africa. Upcoming episodes will discuss atrocities in the Congo, resistance and reform movements, and more.

Congo's Nightmare Part I - An Ancient Place
2026/01/06
From 1885 to 1908, King Leopold II of Belgium owned the Congo as his own personal colony. What transpired there over the course of his reign has credibly been called "the vilest scramble for loot that ever disfigured the history of human conscience." Forced labor, slavery, disease, destruction, and destabliziation led to millions of deaths in one of the lesser known mass trauma events in human history. This is the story of the Congo Free State in Central Africa.
This episode is Part 1 in a series on the Belgian Congo. It takes a look at the origins of humanity in Africa, the Congo as a geographic and human region, the Congo River, the development of agriculture, slavery, and society in the Congo before European arrival, the Indian Ocean Slave Trade vs. the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, the arrival of the Portuguese in the Congo, the motivations for African Imperialism, the intensification of the slave trade as a result of European arrival, the resulting disruption and destabilization, and more. Future episodes will discuss Leopold's acquisition of the Congo as a colony, the resulting atrocities, resistance and reform movements, and the full story of the Congo Free State.

Never Let Me Go and The Bear
2025/12/16
One particular episode of "The Bear" inspired me to think about Kazuo Ishiguro's classic novel "Never Let Me Go"- friendship, love, memory, regret, and what it is that makes us human.
This is a bonus episode I released a few years ago to my Patreon supporters. I think it fits well with the holiday season, see you in the new year!
