Richie Venton: Glasgow City Council's Fire and Rehire Disgrace
2026/09/30
Over 23,000 workers in Glasgow City Council received emails on September 24 informing them of potential dismissal and rehire under terms dictated by the employer. In 2006, a Labour-run council introduced a pay and benefits review that led to rampant wage discrimination against women workers, costing millions in legal battles to block equal pay. In August, an SNP and Scottish Green Party cabinet voted for a pay package including the right to use fire-and-rehire tactics if collective agreements failed…  Richie Venton, National Trade Union Organizer for the Scottish Socialist Party talks about the impact on workers, and the solutions to this disgraceful series of avoidable actions.
