Description

An overweight, 61-year-old retiree, with zero hiking experience, decided to hike the entire 2,185.3 mile length of the Appalachian Trail in 2014. What could possibly go wrong? As his brother, Mike, commented, "It's a bit like taking up boxing and fighting Mike Tyson in your first bout." Join Steve and his guests as they discuss all aspects of the trail, from gear to Lyme Disease, then back to trail magic and injury.

Episode #540 - Days 28-30 Appalachian Trail 2026
2026/04/23
Dana came to visit me for a zero day this week. The Smokies are over and a record I hoped to beat while I was there remains intact!! Even with a relaxing zero with my love, I still had to prepare for my return to the trail the following day, so there is always plenty to do; even on zeroes. i managed to record Dana's reaction to seeing me as well as a conversation I had with a young German couple   I'm using Polarsteps to record my AT thru-hike this year. If you'd like to follow my progress between episodes, as well as photos of my journey, please go to https://www.polarsteps.com/mightyblue and click on the follow button. I used my hike in 2024 on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. You can learn more about the hike and the organization–and donate–by visiting Hike with Steve - Empowering Parents, One Step at a Time | Parenting Matters %. I hope you want to support this critical mission. Don't forget. Our entire series of videos from our Woods Hole Weekend in 2022 is now FREE and available at my YouTube page at Woods Hole Weekend - Trailer There, you'll find all sorts of tips and tricks that our guests took away from the weekend that helped them with their own hikes this year. Check it out. I often ask listeners for ideas on who to interview, and I'm sure several of you say, "I could do that. I've got an awesome story to tell." You're the person we need to hear from. If you'd like to be interviewed on the podcast, just register as a guest on the link below, and I'll be in touch. Come on the show! Episode #539 - Days 24-27 Appalachian Trail 2026
2026/04/20
The Smokies are all but done, with glorious weather all the way with just one day to go. I think I was more concerned about them than I should have been, but it has been a pure pleasure to be hiking above the clouds at 5-6,000 feet all day long. This recap covers last Wednesday thru Saturday, when I navigated the perils of Newfound Gap, needing to get to Gatlinburg, yet stay in Cherokee. Happily it all worked out. Along the way, I chatted with a ridge runner, Houdini, who shared a few tips with me. It's been a great four days. I'm using Polarsteps to record my AT thru-hike this year. Into the Smokies this week for what feels like the end of the beginning. Cell service has been spotty at best, so getting this done a few hours late seems like a win! While recapping my own adventures, I also got the chance to sit down and chat with Doug and Laura, or Smokey and Candy Corn. I didn't get a picture of Candy Corn, but this is Doug. Episode #537 - Days 17-20 Appalachian Trail 2026
2026/04/13
The three days from NOC to Fontana Dam were my toughest section so far. I made it, but the difficulty shook my confidence a bit.  The walk down into NOC was a totally different story, for one specific reason, which you'll learn today.  Along the way, I met more great people and they shared their stories with me, including Sue Powell (Sweet Tears) and Henry Southall (Hot Tang).  With the Smokies next, this is going to be a another important week. Episode #536 - Days 14-16 Appalachian Trail 2026

Into the third week on trail and my first zero day, spent in Franklin, NC. The weather remains atypically unusual, with sun and great hiking conditions leading us on. this week I spoke with Fancy, from Fancy's Place, as well as Chica and Sunsets with their hiking experience and super Airbnb. I was unable to get a photo of Fancy, but here is one with me and Chica and Sunsets.  I'm using Polarsteps to record my AT thru-hike this year. Episode #535 - Days 10-13 Appalachian Trail 2026
2026/04/06
Nearly two weeks in and I feel I'm hiking stronger than ever. These past four days were testing but I think I came through most of the tests. the feeling of community out here, in these early stages, has been something I was hoping for, yet those hopes have been exceeded every day. Along the way, I've met and spoken with loads of fellow hikers, hostel owners, day hikers and so on. Each encounter has provided me with something new to think of and memories to cherish. This week, I was lucky enough to catch a few words with Husband and wife duo, Stan and Jolene, or Stanimal and Dolly, as well as Mike, or Hang 'em. I'm using Polarsteps to record my AT thru-hike this year. Episode #534 - Days 7-9 on the Appalachian Trail
2026/04/02
Now a week into the hike, I've gotten into my stride and my body is holding up under the pressure. Already, the "feel" of the trail is as welcoming as it was the last time I went, and I'm feeling right at home. The fact that the weather has been kind to us is a massive bonus. This recap covers last Sunday thru Tuesday, ending at Dick's Creek Gap, about 70 miles in. Amanda Aguillard invited me into her home, along with Dan, I guy I'd been hiking around, and she wqas the perfect hostess, running us around, feeding us, and letting us take a breath after the trail. Here are the three of us last Sunday.                        As you know, I'm also interviewing other hikers I meet out there, and this week, at Tray Mountain Shelter, I met a terrific guy, Ken, or Phoenix. He was full of the joy of the trail, loving the interactions with his fellow hikers, and relishing his adventure.                                       I'm using Polarsteps to record my AT thru-hike this year. I'm back on trail and getting back into the swing of things. This episode tracks days 3 to 6 after my return to the AT. I'm telling my story, along with those of the people I meet. Episode #531 - Crystal Crowder and William Nelson (Mosey and Sourpatch)
2026/03/05
We have a husband and wife hiking duo on the show today. Mosey and Sourpatch hiked the Appalachian Trail last year, needing to get it done before Sourpatch's eye condition deteriorated further. On the way, they found purpose in several ways, with Mosey on the logistics as Sourpatch carried a bunch of military dog tags on to Katahdin.                             Summiting Katahdin on 9/11 with two previous guests of the podcast–Tony Roddy (Silverback) and Rob Diamond (Dog Tag)–gave extra meaning to their hike.                             You can check out their pictures from their hike and other adventures at (@advenutreswithcrystalandwill) • Instagram profile.                           Tristen Murphy, from the Hike the Good Hike cohort, returns to the show to tell us why she has switched the focus of her upcoming hike from the John Muir Trail. Find out where she's going now. Then, my latest accountability blog ties up a few loose ends as I prepare for my own thru-hike next Monday. Episode #530 - Tim Bennett (Porkie)
2026/02/26
Tim Bennett, or Porkie, is today's guest. Tim had an epic adventure on the Long Trail in Vermont, sharing with us the family connection he has to the trail.               It wasn't a straightforward hike, with serious injury and recovery, plus dramatic floods punctuating his efforts over two years. He remained resilient and completed his mission after his various mishaps.                             Tim also wrote a blog of his journey for the Trek, which you can read here at Tim Bennett, Author at The Trek . He has now written a book about both his and his father's hikes, which will be available later in the year. When I get that link, I'll put it in future show notes. For now, you can visit his website, http://www.longtrailhiker.com/ and sign up to be notified when the book is available.                Ben Kaplan completed the lineup for the Hike the Good Hike cohort, as he talked about leading AMC winter hikes while finding solace in his solo outdoor adventures. Follow Ben on Instagram at Ben Kaplan (@adbenture_times) • Instagram profile                                 My accountability blog is revealing the culmination of my preparations for my own upcoming AT thru-hike. Episode #529 - Michael Neiman (Sharkbait)
2026/02/19
Michael Neiman, who, along with Bruce Matson, brought us Platinum Blazing to the trail, is our guest this week. Michael thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2018, and his new book tells that story–as a 98% true novel.                   Michael, or Sharkbait has been juggling a job, parenthood, and his writing to bring this book to publication, and it's a good read, with plenty of page turning moments.                   You can check out the book at his website, Hello Neiman, or on Amazon at Hello My Name is Sharkbait: A 2,000-Mile Adventure on the Appalachian Trail. OR you could follow him on Instagram at Michael Neiman (@helloneiman) • Instagram profile. He even appeared on Minnesota local TV promoting his book, here:Hello My Name is Sharkbait on Minnesota's Fox 9 Good Day - December 22, 2025                 Ezra Peterson, the last remaining member of the Hike the Good Hike cohort, shares his moving story of transitioning from a woman to a man, and he is feeding his joy of the outdoors by taking on a Fastest Known Time for a non-binary person in hiking the Superior Hiking Trail. He's quite self-deprecating in that there isn't currently a record in that category, but his refreshing attitude to a tricky subject shines through in our conversation.                               Finally today, the accountability blog takes us to within three weeks of my start on the Appalachian Trail. I've got everything I need, plus a few things I don't need, but I still haven't packed and tried out my darn pack!! Episode #528 - Rob Diamond (Dog Tag)
2026/02/12
We welcome Rob Diamond to the show today. I met Rob in 2024 in Hot Springs, when we went and tried to help out after Hurricane Helene. Rob told me then that he was planning on a 2025 thru-hike, so I asked him then to follow up with me once he was done.                     Rob's hike didn't turn out as he had expected, yet he battled through innumerable obstacles as he made his way to Katahdin, eventually summiting on his intended summit date of 9/11.                               On the way, Rob raised awareness of the scourge of suicide among military and first responders by carrying dog tags to represent those who die by suicide. It was a deeply personal mission, and Rob fulfilled it in a caring way. You can check out more about Rob on his YouTube channel at DogTag hiking the AT. There is even a terrific little video and song about Kyle's Trail that tracked one of the special dog tags. Check this out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=We85_ujD7MY                 We've met most of our Hike the Good Hike cohort, and this week, single mother Tristen Murphy shares her emotional story. Tristen is hiking the John Muir Trail later in the year. We hope she has a blast!                                         In my accountability blog, I share news of my pre-hike check up with my Doctor. He gave me the green light! I used my hike in 2024 on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade. Episode #527 - Savannah Schuring (Snazzy Cat)
2026/02/05
Savannah Schuring, or Snazzy Cat, took on an Appalachian Trail thru-hike–which she completed in a remarkable three months–as her graduate thesis. On the way, she was interviewing hikers as to their motivations to be out on the trail and learned so much from them, and about herself, with some fascinating conclusions.                               Savannah always loved the outdoors and, indeed, was a long-distance runner, but she came to love long hikes and completed her Triple Crown.               Her new book, Between the Miles, is available on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0G3MCZS73 . You can also check out her website at http://savannahschuring.com , while you can connect with her on social media at https://www.instagram.com/direct/t/117946462927501/, or at https://www.instagram.com/direct/t/17846517893892959/                         Our Hike the Good Hike member this week is Jim Wellman, who, like Steve, is attempting an Appalachian Trail thru-hike this year, starting about a month after Steve. Jim is open about his personal mental health struggles, and hope to reach others in a similar situation. You can follow Jim on several social media platforms on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/jimsonanotheradventure/ and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/jimwellmanPADI. He also has a YouTube channel, which you can find here, https://www.youtube.com/@jimwellman76310                             Finally, our Accountability Blog brings us up to date with the preparations for my own hike on the Appalachian Trail next month. Episode #526 - Erin Tuveson (Bookie) from Rambling Roots Hostel
2026/01/29
Today, we meet an AT thru-hiker from the Class of 2015 who went on to buy and run a hostel near the Nantahala Outdoor Center. Erin Tuveson, or Bookie, became so enamored of the trail that she wanted to be around the community she met out there.                                               Erin now owns and runs the Rambling Roots Hostel, bringing her AT knowledge to bear as she puts together the kind of place she loved when she was hiking.                       You can learn more about Erin and her hostel at her website Rambling Roots Hostel. Additionally, you can keep up with Erin and the hostel on social media at: Rambling Roots Hostel andRambling Roots Hostel (@ramblingrootshostel) • Instagram profile. Also, Erin's blog about traveling with her dog is at How My Dog Survived a Thru-Hike With Me: Keeping Them Healthy - The Trek .                                 Also on the show today is JC Van Etten, who recently published a book following his successful completion of the Continental Divide Trail, which completed his Triple Crown. Check out his book at Hiking the Continental Divide Trail: "Embracing the Brutality" Our Hike the Good Hike team moves on to Shanda Carter, a mother of threew who will be hiking the Colorado Trail later in the year. You cvan follow Shanda on Instagram at Shanda Carter (@shandacarter_) • Instagram profile .                                   In my accountability blog, I've started to acquire some of the smaller items I'll need for my hike, and I also lost Luis, my personal trainer this week. We keep moving forward though, as Jake has taken up the task of getting me in some sort of shape for the trail. I used my hike in 2024 on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I've been privileged to serve for over a decade.
