#360 | A Hundred Years Of Covid w/ Nate Bear
2024/02/24
Social critic and writer Nate Bear joins me to discuss his work over the years communicating his insights into the intersections between the ongoing pandemic, human-caused climate disruption, and biospheric collapse. Nate describes how the abandonment of the population to repeated infection, mass illness, and death, is layered into the compounding crises affecting the living systems of the planet today. Nate Bear holds a masters in the history of international relations and worked as a journalist before becoming a PR man for the planet, communicating the science of the climate and ecological crisis for non-profits and activist groups. After working in that sector for a decade, Nate is now a writer and social critic that analyses the intersection between capital, public health, governance, and the overlapping crises of the Sars-CoV-2 pandemic, climate disruption, and ecological collapse. Nate writes about these subject in his popular newsletter, Do Not Panic!, on Substack. Margaret Killjoy: Writing The Ambiguous Utopia
2024/02/09
This is a segment of episode 357 of Last Born In The Wilderness, “The Ambiguous Utopia: Fiction, History, & Hope In A Dying World w/ Margaret Killjoy.” Listen to the full episode: https://www.lastborninthewilderness.com/episodes/margaret-killjoy-2 Learn more about Margaret’s work: https://linktr.ee/margaretkilljoy Fiction, as Margaret Killjoy points to in this interview, isn’t good at providing blueprints, it’s about finding the aspiration of what to look forward to; fiction is better at asking questions than providing answers. A good piece of creative storytelling can make the reader feel what it’s like to live in the “ambiguous utopia” of LeGuin’s The Dispossessed or Killjoy’s A Country of Ghosts, and take us to a place that may be difficult for us to imagine existing otherwise, as much as we may long for it. Such a creative exercise can help us see what subtle and complex problems may arise in such a situation, hence the ambiguity of the “ambiguous utopia.” Margaret Killjoy is a transfeminine author born and raised in Maryland who was spent her adult life traveling with no fixed home. A 2015 graduate of Clarion West, Margaret’s short fiction has been published by Tor.com, Strange Horizons, Vice’s Terraform, and Fireside Fiction, amongst others. She is the author of We Won't Be Here Tomorrow, The Lamb Will Slaughter the Lion, and The Barrow Will Send What it May. She is also the host of the podcast Live Like the World is Dying and Cool People Who Did Cool Stuff on iHeartRadio. Eliot Jacobson: Climate Data, Doomerism, & Deceptive Expectations
2024/02/07
This is a segment of episode 356 of Last Born In The Wilderness, “Off The Charts: Climate Data, Doomerism, & Deceptive Expectations w/ Eliot Jacobson.” Listen to the full episode: https://www.lastborninthewilderness.com/episodes/eliot-jacobson Learn more about Eliot Jacobson’s work: https://climatecasino.net Climate science communicators like Eliot Jacobson have taken it upon themselves to gather numerous points of data and present it in easy to comprehend graphs and descriptions. It becomes clear what the trends show, and how rapidly the habitability of the planet is disintegrating. The stresses of global heating, and broader attacks on the living systems of the earth, are propelling the sixth mass extinction event forward and outward at neck breaking speed. For most days this past year, it has been difficult to keep up with all the information coming in, but in many ways, Jacobson’s comprehensive data sets and analysis of broader climate trends gives us a grounded view of where we are in all of this, and what it portends in the years to come. In light of this reality, how do we position ourselves? How do we understand ourselves? How do we cope? How do we live? What the hell do we do? Great and difficult questions bear down on us, and if contemplated enough, we do not necessarily arrive at clear solutions. The set of problems producing climate disruption are, in fact, a predicament, one we will not be able to extricate ourselves from. Eliot Jacobson and I, in this hour together, discuss this predicament within that framing, discussing where hope fits in this—if it even fits at all. Eliot Jacobson, PhD is a retired professor of mathematics and computer science, retired casino consultant, now a full-time volunteer, husband and grandfather. #359 | Earth’s Greatest Enemy w/ Abby Martin
2024/01/27
Independent journalist and documentarian Abby Martin joins me to discuss Earth's Greatest Enemy, a feature length documentary that examines one of the largest polluters and contributors to global climate change in the world: the United States military. I ask Abby what the seeds of this massive project were, and why the military-industrial complex is the "elephant in the room" in the political discourse on human-caused climate change. Also, we connect this subject to the horrific mass violence in Gaza being enacted by the State of Israel—with full US complicity—to the ecocide implicit in the maintenance of US hegemonic interests globally. Abby Martin is an independent journalist and host of The Empire Files, an ongoing interview and documentary series. #358 | Declare Long Covid A National Emergency w/ Long Covid Action Project
2024/01/25
Long Covid Action Project [LCAP] activists Stephanie and Linda, along with journalist and LCAP founder Joshua Pribanic, join me in this impromptu interview to discuss the recent direct action Linda and Stephanie participated in at the Senate HELP Committee Hearing on January 18, ostensibly held to address the ongoing and growing Long Covid crisis in the United States. This is the first in an ongoing series of interviews done in collaboration with journalist and LCAP founder and activist Joshua Pribanic to address the realities of what Long Covid is, and the action needed to address this issue comprehensively. “There is not a single face of Long Covid. Long Covid can be people in their prime, of working age. It can be people a little bit older. It could be people without any preexisting health conditions. It doesn’t discriminate in terms of who it strikes, and I think Congress needs to know that. It’s not the sick and the weak. It’s not middle-aged women only. It’s everybody. Until they pay attention to that, they will not be able to get a handle on the problem.” - Linda, LCAP activist

#357 | The Ambiguous Utopia w/ Margaret Killjoy
2024/01/15
Anarchist writer, musician, and podcaster Margaret Killjoy returns to the podcast to discuss the political act of writing fiction and imagining the “ambiguous utopia.” I ask Margaret to define what hope is or can be, and how her work communicating the stories of radical individuals and movements during pivotal moments throughout history on her podcast, Cool People Who Did Cool Stuff, can help us (re-)frame contemporary struggles for liberation, justice, and peace in the world today. Margaret Killjoy is a transfeminine author born and raised in Maryland who was spent her adult life traveling with no fixed home. A 2015 graduate of Clarion West, Margaret’s short fiction has been published by Tor.com, Strange Horizons, Vice’s Terraform, and Fireside Fiction, amongst others.
