Billion Dollar Mind ft. Rick Macci & Dr. Niva
2024/02/21
Welcome to Season 13 Episode 7 of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. Renowned coach, Rick Macci, is back alongside his former student and current neuromuscular neurologist (more info on that in the pod!), Dr. Nivedita Uberoi Jerath aka Dr. Niva, to discuss their new book, BILLION DOLLAR MIND (https://amzn.to/3tMs021). Last year, you had the opportunity to hear from Rick about his coaching philosophy and approach to junior tennis development (https://parentingaces.com/articles/its-a-journey-ft-rick-macci/). In this episode, we delve deeper into the coaching of mindset and how that can impact a junior player's ability to perform at their best on and off the court. This new collaborative effort between coach and player/doctor combines Dr. Niva's neurological expertise with Macci's renowned coaching techniques, offering readers a practical roadmap to fortify their minds and overcome mental obstacles. BILLION DOLLAR MIND explores the intrinsic link between the mind and personal success, connecting fundamental neurology principles with the teachings that have shaped the careers of tennis stars like Venus and Serena Williams, Sofia Kenin, Andy Roddick, Jennifer Capriati, and Maria Sharapova under Rick Macci's guidance. The book aims to help readers: - Develop a profound understanding of the brain, senses, and the significance of thoughts. - Break free from thinking loops and negative thought patterns. - Harness the power of positive affirmations for a resilient mindset. - Cultivate self-love, practice gratitude, and build self-confidence. - Instill self-discipline, enhance focus, and nurture inner strength. For more information, and to purchase the book (ParentingAces may receive a small commission if you purchase through our Amazon link), go to https://amzn.to/3tMs021. Rally Hopper ft. Ken Bright
2024/02/14
Welcome to Season 13 Episode 6 of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. They say necessity is the mother of invention. This week's guest, inventor and CPA Ken Bright, definitely supports that statement! Ken grew up playing competitive tennis alongside other sports. While he was quite the player, even playing on his high school team, he chose another path when it was time for college. However, he always kept playing and competing, growing his love for tennis into his adult life. After noticing he was amassing quite the collection of used tennis balls in his racquet bag, Ken thought there had to be a better solution for rallying those balls to use in future practices and matches. Rally Hopper (https://rallyhopper.com/) was born! Traditional ball hoppers are awkwardly shaped, cumbersome to transport, and add unnecessary weight to your practice. Rally Hopper is a racquet-shaped ball hopper that fits into the racquet compartment of your tennis bag, holding around 30 balls. It has foldable legs which bring the balls to "grab level" during practices and can also be used to pick up the balls once empty. Taking things a step further, Ken was concerned about the amount of tennis string winding up in land fills. So, he created a way to recycle the string, using it to hold the balls in place in the Rally Hopper. Ken is now working with stringers across the US, providing them a simple way to collect their used string and ship it to him for use in this creative new tennis solution. For more information on Rally Hopper, be sure to visit the KickStarter page at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rallyhopper/rally-hopper. There you will find great photos and videos demonstrating its various uses and branding opportunities. You can also follow Rally Hopper on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/rallyhopper/ where Ken will be posting purchase and branding options as they become available. Brand Building to Offset Tennis Costs ft. Anthony & Gwyneth Britton
2024/02/07
Welcome to Season 13 Episode 5 of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. In this week's episode, we will be looking at one family's solution to the high costs of junior tennis development and competition. When Gwyneth Britton, now 11 years old, was just barely out of diapers, her dad, Anthony, noticed several outstanding qualities in her. She was tenacious. She was competitive. And she loved to ham it up for the camera. After introducing Gwyneth to tennis by hitting some balls on a neighborhood court, Anthony also saw she had great hand-eye coordination and a love for the game. That skill and love were also noticed by area coaches and the USTA as well as some brands that needed a young model to showcase their offerings. That was the start of Gwyneth's tennis and modeling career and the start of a mission to use Gwyneth's skills on and off the court to help fund her tennis development. The two Brittons share their lessons learned - so far! - and offer tips on how other families can use appropriate branding to offset the expense of our sport. In 2024, Gwyneth is releasing her first children's book entitled THE SUMMER CAMP CHAMP based on her experiences training at a new facility with a new coach. We will update the show notes with a link to purchase the book once it's available. For more information, be sure to follow Gwyneth on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/gwyneth.britton/. You can find out more about her brand deals on her website at https://gwynethbritton.com/. Also, check out her YouTube show, THAT TENNIS KID SHOW, where she shares interviews with her peers, coaches, and favorite professional players, at https://www.youtube.com/@thattenniskidshow9402/videos. Funding a Pro Career ft. Jamie Loeb
2024/01/31
Welcome to Season 13 Episode 4 of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. Former NCAA Women's Singles Champion, Jamie Loeb, joins me this week to discuss her transition from junior tennis to an outstanding career at the University of North Carolina to her current status on the WTA Tour. I first met Jamie and her mom while she was still playing the Junior Slams. Ever since, I have followed her career through college and now on the pro tour. Until recently, it's been a pretty seamless transition moving through the various levels of the game. However, in recent years, Jamie has been challenged financially as she continues to fight toward reaching her goals on the tennis court. In this episode, you will hear Jamie's very frank accounting of life on tour when you are outside the Top 150 and struggling to pay for travel, training, medical care, and other costs of being a professional athlete in an individual sport. She works every single day to build and promote her brand so that she can attract sponsors and financial backers to allow her to stay on tour. That's on top of the rigorous training, travel, and competition schedule she has to maintain. It all looks very different from what most of think of when we picture the life of a pro athlete! To get more information on Jamie's career and how you might be able to help her stay on the WTA Tour, follow her on Instagram at https://instagram.com/jloeb308 - her DMs are open! You can also email me at lisa@parentingaces.com, and I'll be happy to connect you. If you're an X user, follow Jamie there at https://twitter.com/jloeb308. 2024/01/10
Welcome to Season 13 Episode 1 of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. We are thrilled to kick off the year with two amazing coaches, Robert Gomez and Todd Widom, helping us understand the role of ratings and rankings in our children's tennis development. Robert Gomez is the Head of the Florida Coaches Commission, a member of the Florida Junior Competitive Counsel, and a USPTA Elite Professional. He has run professional tournaments, traveled the world to coach in other professional tournaments, and is the recently-hired Tournament Director of the Junior Orange Bowl 12s and 14s divisions. Robert also coaches junior players at all levels of the game as the head of tennis at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Florida. Todd Widom is a former college player from the University of Miami and an ATP professional player who now runs his own tennis system in the Broward County, Florida, area. Long-time listeners of this podcast should be very familiar with Todd by now! These two coaches have known each other many years and often connect to share ideas on developing the players with whom they are working. Heath Waters of Match!Tennis App is back with us to share the latest updates to this game-changing tech! From Russia with Love ft. Egor Shestakov
2023/11/01
Welcome to Season 12 Episode 41 of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. Egor Shestakov, a senior at University of Texas at Tyler who happens to be from Russia, shares his junior and college tennis journey with us, one that I believe you will find to be extremely eye-opening. Egor was coached by his father at the beginning of his junior tennis career until both of them realized their relationship - and Egor's tennis - would be better served by hiring an outside coach. Egor continued to play other sports at the recreational level while pursuing his tennis with the goal of coming to the US to play in college. You will hear him talk about the challenges involved in getting noticed by American college coaches, learning English and taking the necessary entrance exams, and what he's learned about himself and his tennis since being in Texas the past 3 years. This young man has a lot of wisdom to share with all of us, so please consider having your junior player(s) watch or listen to this episode. Egor is happy to help other players however he can. To that end, you can email him at paint320@gmail.com or message him on Instagram at https://instagram.com/shestakovvegor. NOTE: Here is the article I reference in the episode regarding my son's first solo tournament experience - https://parentingaces.com/articles/another-giant-step/ If you’re so inclined, please share this – and all our episodes! – with your tennis community. My Life on Court ft. Lester Sack
2023/10/25
NOTE: Please pardon the technical issues with the sound. We did our best to capture all of Lester's stories though some of the audio & video glitched along the way. Welcome to Season 12 Episode 40 of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. This week's episode is one that's very special to me as it features my father's college teammate, Lester Sack, who is still competing on the world stage at age 87! Lester Sack didn't really start developing his tennis game until he showed up at the Tulane tennis courts as an 18-year-old freshman walk-on. He credits coach Emmett Pare with his success on the Tulane team and beyond. Lester has been competing on the Seniors and Super Seniors tour ever since graduating from Tulane in 1958, earning a ranking in the top 3 nationally in every age group. He is the epitome of a lifelong learner, even now continuing to make changes and improvements to his game. Here are just a few of his accomplishments in his illustrious tennis life: Played number 3 singles and number 1 doubles for Tulane University from 1956 to 1958 when the Green Wave won 3 Southeastern Conference Championships, and he and was ranked number 1 in doubles in the conference with partner Ron Holmberg Joined the professional tour and won singles titles in England and Germany, won the 1965 Canadian Open Doubles Championships, and reached the 3rd round of the 1966 French Open Mississippi resident until 1977 and one of the most dominant players of his generation, winning the Mississippi Open or Mississippi Closed every year and ranked number 1 in Mississippi Men’s Open Singles and top 10 in the South every year from 1959 to 1975 Won numerous state and section age group tournaments and ranked 2nd in the nation in Men’s 45 singles in 1984, won the 1984 Men’s 45 Singles National Championship and ranked 7th and was a finalist at the Men’s 55 National Clay Court Singles Championship in 1987 Represented the United States on the Dubler Cup, Gordon Cup, Gardner Mulloy Cup, Stevens Cup, and World Team Championship teams Served as the head coach of the USTA New Orleans Area Training Center and was an assistant pro for the Racquet Club of Memphis and the New Orleans Lawn Tennis Club Inducted into the Mississippi Tennis Hall of Fame in 1994, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1991, the Clarksdale & Cohoma County Mississippi Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Tennis Hall of Fame in 2009, the USTA Southern Tennis Hall of Fame in 2005, Tulane Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000 And Lester isn't even the oldest guy out there competing on the world stage! Take a look at this article on centenarian Henry Young who also played in the recent World Team Championships in Mallorca! I hope to have the chance to hit with Lester in the near future. In the meantime, I'll continue to follow his tennis journey as he makes his way into his 90's! If you’re so inclined, please share this – and all our episodes! – with your tennis community. We Need to Fill in the Training Gaps ft. JY Aubone
2023/10/18
Welcome to Season 12 Episode 39 of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. Coach JY Aubone is back to talk about what he sees as gaps in the training most junior tennis players are receiving. JY works with several junior players, both in person and virtually, and he is noticing definite trends in the people he trains. Not only are they missing the mental toughness and understanding of tactics during competition and pressure situations, but they are also practicing inefficiently. What does that mean? Players need to replicate tournament situations during their daily practice sessions. That includes building their fitness, mental resiliency, and nutritional habits. And sometimes that means bringing in specialists such as sports psychologists or fitness coaches. Great tennis coaches build a network of professionals to whom they can refer players for that extra training and work. If you have more questions or would like to get in touch with JY, you can reach him via his website, AuboneTennis.com. If you aren’t already, be sure to follow JY on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram as well. If you’re so inclined, please share this – and all our episodes! – with your tennis community.
