99. What is Game Readiness
2026/08/23
Patty Gasso said it in an interview and it stuck with me: your hitters can be good and the grind will still expose them if they don't show up ready to play. It sounds like a small question when a coach asks it. It isn't. I spent four and a half years as a volunteer assistant at New Jersey City University in the NJAC — the SEC of Division III. The hardest part of the job was never the swings. It was making sure twenty players could walk onto the field on game day and leave the professor, the paper, and everything else in the parking lot. In this solo episode I make a different argument: readiness isn't your coach's job. It's yours. I break game readiness into four categories — mental, emotional, physical, and strategic — and get specific about what each one looks like in practice. Pregame mental checklists. Who you warm up with. Cutting the phone off before you pull up. Box breathing and visualization. Focus anchors. Counting the cards on opposing pitchers during warmups. Shrinking your strike zone to quadrants so you stop chasing. And the 1-2-3 consistency formula I used with college staffs to find out how many players on a roster can honestly be counted on. If you're headed to the next level, pay attention to the last third. What keeps freshmen and sophomores on the bench usually isn't physical ability. It's 80% mental. Probably more. 97. A Messy Postseason, The Velocity Lie & Too Many Homers: Leaving vs. Loyalty in Softball feat. Rick Pauly
2026/06/09
Rob Crews and master pitching coach Rick Pauly pull no punches on the current state of college softball. From backdoor transfer portal deals and the culture of "leavers" to a full breakdown of the 2026 Women's College World Series — nothing is off limits. They examine why loyalty is disappearing from the sport, why colleges aren't developing players (and never really claimed to), and why too many home runs this postseason is a pitching problem, not a hitting achievement. Rob introduces the concept of "visual cache" and vertical bat angle as the keys to hitting the low rise ball, and Rick sounds off on the velocity obsession that's broken softball pitching from the private sector up. Plus: the all-time pitchers debate, the home run record chase, and a tease of Rick's developing nervous system/pulsing concept. No fluff. No spin. Just real talk.
96. Spin Never Lies: How Rapsodo Develops Hitters & Pitchers
2026/05/31
Spin Never Lies: How Rapsodo Develops Hitters & Pitchers | Brian Page, Director of MLB & Special Accounts, Rapsodo Exit velocity only tells you the ball was hit hard. Spin tells you why — and what your barrel and body actually did to create it. Brian Page of Rapsodo joins Rob Crews for a deep dive into ball flight data and what it really takes to develop hitters and pitchers. They break down why spin rate is Rapsodo's bread and butter, how optical measurement of the ball's lace pattern delivers best-in-class spin data, gyro (bullet) spin and why softball is full of it, and the live-on-live overlay that's changing how athletes train. They also get into the philosophy that makes the tech matter: development over report cards, starting every athlete with a baseline before chasing numbers, making technology a community project, and how ball flight data is getting athletes seen and recruited at every level — D2, D3, JUCO and beyond. 💬 "Intent, body, barrel, ball — reverse engineer the whole process and you're on to something." In This Episode: • What Rapsodo is and the journey from golf to diamond sports • Why spin rate is the most underrated metric on the hitting side • Gyro / bullet spin explained — and why it shows up everywhere in softball • Development vs. report cards — making data a community project • Building a baseline before chasing numbers • The live-on-live overlay and in-game data as the next frontier • How ball flight data gets athletes recruited at every level • Why softball deserves technology built specifically for softball Connect with Rob Crews & Complete Game: 🌐 Website: https://complete.game 📱 Instagram: @completegame 🐦 X/Twitter: @CompleteGame 📘 Facebook: @cgmindset 📺 YouTube: youtube.com/completegame 🎵 TikTok: @rob_crews About Brian Page: Director of MLB & Special Accounts at Rapsodo — the optical and radar ball-tracking system that puts professional-grade ball flight data (spin rate, spin direction, exit velocity, launch angle, break and more) into the hands of athletes at every level, for both baseball and softball. 🌐 rapsodo.com 📱 Instagram: @rapsodo.softball / @rapsodo Transcending Sport is a unique audio experience with the world's most intriguing sports personalities. 95. Velo vs Spin & Why 113 D1 Teams Hit Over .300 | Casey Roche, CEO of Pitch Logic
2026/05/11
Velo vs Spin and Why 113 D1 Teams Hit Over .300 | Casey Roche, CEO of Pitch Logic In 2024, 43 D1 softball teams hit above .300. This season, that number exploded to 113. So what's going on — and what can pitching do about it? Casey Roche, CEO of Pitch Logic, joins Rob Crews for a deep dive into pitching analytics, smart ball technology, and the future of pitcher development. They break down spin rate, velocity measurement (at release vs. at the plate), the riseball debate, pitch tunneling, and why the coaches who evaluate themselves are the ones who get better. Casey also shares how Pitch Logic expanded into softball the right way — consulting experts, testing relentlessly, and building a product the community actually asked for. 💬 "If you're the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room." In This Episode: • The D1 softball hitting explosion — 43 to 113 teams above .300 in two seasons • Why velocity at the plate matters more than velocity at release • The riseball debate — science, spin, and what coaches actually see • How Pitch Logic puts a computer chip inside a ball for instant metrics • Spin rate, spin efficiency, break, and arm path data • Authenticity in coaching and the business of sports tech • Why every pitcher should have data in their bag 🔥 Special offer: Use code RC10 for $10 off at pitchlogic.com --- Connect with Rob Crews & Complete Game: 🌐 Website: https://complete.game 📱 Instagram: @completegame 🐦 X/Twitter: @CompleteGame 📘 Facebook: @cgmindset 📺 YouTube: youtube.com/completegame 🎵 TikTok: @rob_crews About Casey Roche: CEO of Pitch Logic — a sports technology company that embeds sensors inside baseballs and softballs to provide instant pitching metrics including spin rate, velocity, break, spin efficiency, arm path, and more. 🌐 pitchlogic.com 📱 Instagram: @pitchlogicsoftball --- Transcending Sport is a unique audio experience with the world's most intriguing sports personalities. 89. Bertrand Théraulaz, co-founder of ActionTypes, The Motor Signature Profiling Originators
2026/01/25
Episode Summary In this landmark episode of Transcending Sport, Rob Crews sits down with Bertrand Théraulaz, co-founder of ActionTypes and one of the originators of motor signature profiling. For over 35 years, Bertrand and his partner Ralph Hippolyte have developed a comprehensive approach to understanding human movement — connecting brain, body, and behavior in ways that transform how we coach athletes. This conversation traces the complete evolution of ActionTypes: from Bertrand's early days coaching volleyball in Switzerland, through his breakthrough discovery in 1998, to the launch of the first-ever U.S. Hybrid Training Program bringing this methodology to American coaches. This isn't a simplified binary system — this is the complete methodology, directly from one of its creators. Key Takeaways 🎯 You Have FOUR Motor Skills, Not One Everyone has four motor skills available — not just one fixed profile. Your "comfort zone" is used about 70% of the time, but your second motor skill is your recovery zone. Training only one leads to overuse and injury. 🎯 Two Profiles That Interact You have a motor profile (voluntary motor system for technique execution) AND a motivational profile (autonomous nervous system for preparation and recovery). Understanding both prevents coaching errors. 🎯 "Listen to Your Body, Not Anybody" The body always has a solution. Your brain is a coordination device designed for movement. Trust your natural patterns instead of forcing external "one size fits all" solutions. 🎯 Coach the Intention, Not the Action The HOW belongs to the athlete. Coaches should focus on intention and context — not prescriptive technique. "Recognize WHO they are first, not WHAT they do." 🎯 Vision Strategies Matter Some athletes use central vision first → then peripheral. Others start peripheral → then central. You cannot teach one person the opposite strategy — it must match their profile. 🎯 The Danger of Oversimplification Reducing motor preferences to simple binary categories is dangerous. Without understanding both profiles and all four motor skills, coaches risk causing injuries and harming athletes. What's Covered in This Episode The origin story of ActionTypes (dating back to 1989-1998)Bertrand's breakthrough discovery in Canberra, Australia (1998)Why "one size fits all" coaching fails athletesThe four motor skills and how they coordinate togetherMotor profiles vs. motivational profiles — and why both matterVision strategies: central-to-peripheral vs. peripheral-to-centralApplications beyond sports: therapy, autism spectrum, educationThe U.S. Hybrid Training Program launching in 2026Ethical responsibilities when profiling athletesThe 800-page ActionTypes reference bookAbout the Guest Bertrand Théraulaz is the co-founder of ActionTypes, alongside Ralph Hippolyte. A former elite volleyball coach, Swiss national team coach, and director of coaching education for Swiss Olympic for 17 years, Bertrand has spent 35+ years developing the science of motor signatures. His work spans 30+ sports disciplines and has influenced elite athletes, Olympic teams (including the French handball team — Tokyo Olympics gold medalists), therapists, and educators worldwide. 88. Why You're Seeing It (Even When You Think You're Not)
2026/01/18
"I'm not seeing the ball well." Every coach has heard it. But what if the problem isn't your eyes—it's the disconnect between what you see and what you do? In this episode of Transcending Sport, I break down why players think they can't see the ball when they actually can, how this same visual disconnect affects baserunners reading pickoff moves, and why infield masks tell us everything about visual processing at different competition levels. I also introduce the 3 critical timings every hitter needs to understand: Hitter's body to pitcher's bodyEyes to point of collisionBody-bat to ballThis is perception-action training at its core. 🔥 TIMESTAMPS:0:00 - Introduction0:45 - "I'm not seeing the ball" - The lie hitters tell themselves2:30 - Baserunner reads and pickoff misreads4:15 - Why lower-level infielders wear masks5:30 - The 3 timings of hitting7:00 - Putting it all together

Topics covered: The record-setting attendance and what it reveals about travel ball coachingNew technology and products showcased by exhibitorsThe tension between education and product endorsement in presentationsWhether technology is becoming prohibitively expensive for smaller schools and programsShould travel ball coaches have a voice in college recruiting calendar decisions?Rob introduces his new concept: "egosystem" and its implications for competitive sportsDoes softball genuinely want to embrace data-driven coaching, or is it performative?Their favorite speakers and sessions from the convention If you're a coach, administrator, or parent trying to navigate the evolving landscape of softball, this conversation will challenge your assumptions and give you plenty to think about.
86. The State of Travel Ball with Rick Pauly
2025/11/21
Rick Pauly returns to Transcending Sport for another fan-favorite conversation where we contrast our perspectives on softball—me as a hitting coach, Rick as a pitching coach. In this episode, we tackle the current state of travel ball softball and ask the hard questions: Is velocity everything, or are we missing something more important? How has the transfer portal reshaped recruiting and the travel ball landscape? Why do the rich keep getting richer in travel ball, college softball, and pro sports? We also share what you can expect from us at the upcoming NFCA Softball Convention this December in Las Vegas. Whether you're a player, parent, or coach navigating today's softball landscape, this conversation will give you plenty to think about.
