Beyond Self-Actualization: Maslow, Jung and Transcendence
2026/10/05
Nearly half of US adults say they feel more anxious about world events than they did a year ago. So what do we do with that anxiety? In the final episode of our series on Maslow's hierarchy of needs, we explore why outer success and even self-actualization can leave us feeling that something is missing, and how the path forward begins within.
Most people know Maslow's famous pyramid, but few know that he later added a level beyond self-actualization: self-transcendence. We connect this lesser-known stage to Jung's process of individuation and to the non-dual wisdom of Advaita Vedanta, showing how shadow work and realizing the true Self can help you meet a chaotic world with clarity, compassion, and real power instead of fear and division.
In this episode, you'll discover:
Why so many people feel stuck in survival mode, even without an outright crisisWhat Maslow really meant by self-actualization, and why it's still ego-basedThe "hidden" level of Maslow's hierarchy: self-transcendenceHow projecting our shadow fuels division, online outrage, and political conflictWhy outer success is not the same as inner development, even in spiritual circlesA powerful metaphor for your true nature: the boat and the oceanHow Maslow, Jung, and Vedanta overlap, and where they differInteresting in getting coaching with Debra & Dr. Rob? Seeking Love & Belonging without the Ego: A Jungian Approach to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
2026/09/28
Seeking love and approval externally? Here's how to turn this around.
We all have the same needs for love, belonging, and esteem, but the ego and the higher self go after them in very different ways. In this episode of Jung on Purpose, Love & Belonging without the Ego, we continue our Maslow's hierarchy series and look at how these needs change when we move from the conditioned self, shaped by the world and driven by insecurity, to the individuated self Carl Jung described. The ego looks outside itself for love, approval, and status to feel secure, whether through relationships, labels, achievements, or even AI companions. The higher self builds security from within and gives love and belonging instead of chasing them.
What you'll learn
Ego needs vs. higher self: How the ego seeks love, belonging, and esteem to feel safe, and what changes when you meet those needs from a more evolved place.Getting unstuck from labels: Why attachment styles can change, and how personality tests, diagnoses, and labels can trap you in a fixed identity.Real connection vs. substitutes: Why social media, dating apps, and AI offer faux belonging, and how Jung understood loneliness and healthy community.Esteem and confidence: Why self-esteem doesn't come first, and how small wins, resilience, and even failure build real confidence.Learn more about our Second Horizon Coaching Membership at SecondHorizonCoaching.com

The Psychology of Playing It Safe: Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
2026/09/21
There's a reason you feel like playing it safe, especially now as the world is going through a huge upheaval.
In this episode, we explore Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, specifically the safety level, because I think so many of us get stuck there long after our basic needs are actually met. Debra opens up about a personal story from when she was ten that shaped her own relationship with safety in ways she didn't fully understand until much later.
Learn how fear and instability get passed down through generations and how today's chaos (AI, the economy, the political climate) keeps our nervous systems in survival mode, and why coaching, not therapy, is often exactly the right tool for working through this kind of everyday fear.
The difference between a "safety response" and real trauma, and why most people need coaching, not a diagnosisThe core fear behind almost every emotional trigger, once you dig past the surface (hint: it's not what you think)How to feel safe in a world of chaos and uncertaintyShare Your Thoughts with Us...

Mid-Life Pause: Why Stay Stuck (Even When You Know You're Unhappy)
2026/09/14
Sixty-four percent of workers are disengaged and 16% are actively checked out, so if you're dreading Mondays but can't figure out why you won't just leave, you're far from alone. In this episode of Jung on Purpose, we look at the "midlife pause," the threshold moment before real change, and why the ego will do almost anything to keep you from crossing it, even dressing itself up in spiritual language to talk you out of your own life.
Learn the difference between ego-driven motivation and soul-driven motivation, why therapy's "something's broken" model can actually keep people stuck longer, and why the answer isn't a better vision board but a different way of listening to your own mind. At the end, we ask four questions designed to pull you out of the story that's been running your life.
Why the ego can only reference the past, and what that means for how it handles the fear of changeThe simple test for telling ego fear from soul guidance: does the "safe" answer feel comforting, or does the "scary" one feel alive? Why obstacles after a career change aren't a sign something's wrong, they're a sign you're finally "up to something"The four questions to ask yourself in the pause: what do you want, what's stopping you, who do you need to become, and what will your life look like when you get there

Is it Enlightenment or Spiritual Bypassing?
2026/09/07
Are you really enlightened or just spiritual bypassing?
In this episode, we continue our conversation on enlightenment and moksha and what it actually means to wake up from the illusion of the ego.
We explore why the ego's sense of "not enoughness" is a built-in feature of the human mind, not proof of a childhood wound, and why so many people chase spiritual "quick fixes" instead of doing the deeper work.
We talk through the real difference between the awakened mind and pure consciousness, why techniques alone can't get you to enlightenment, and why a real path requires a guide and a community to get you there.
We explain why feeling "not enough" predates childhood and is part of the human condition, not a pathology to fixWe break down the difference between the awakened, cognitive mind and pure consciousness itselfWe share why spiritual bypassing and quick-fix techniques keep people "digging shallow holes" instead of finding real depthWe describe why growth means facing discomfort directly, not clearing it away or spiritually bypassing itWe explain why every path to enlightenment needs three things: a path, a guide, and a community (a sangha)

Mid-Life Crisis or Wake-up Call?
2026/08/31
On our new episode of Jung on Purpose called, What if Your Mid-life Crisis is a Wake-up Call?, we get personal about our own dark nights of the soul, hers arriving as a total life collapse, his arriving at the peak of "having it all." Together we explain why chasing pleasure and success (Kama and Artha in Eastern philosophy) eventually stops working, and why that collapse isn't punishment, it's an invitation.
Drawing on Jung, the Bhagavad Gita, Eckhart Tolle, and even Freud, they map out the four aims of life, Dharma and Moksha included, and explain why your midlife crisis might actually be the beginning of a rebirth into a more soul-directed life.
In this episode we share:
There are two very different roads into a midlife crisis. Debra's came through loss (broken engagement, lost job, lost home), Rob's came through achievement that left him empty. Both point to the same underlying lesson: pleasure and success alone can't sustain you.Eastern philosophy offers four aims of life, not two. Kama (pleasure) and Artha (success) are real and worth having, but without Dharma (purpose/sacred duty) and Moksha (transcendence), they collapse into meaninglessness, addiction, or the endless "just a little more" trap. What looks like darkness is often a doorway. When old ego-driven pursuits stop delivering, it's not a sign something's wrong with you, it's a sign you're being called toward acting from soul rather than ego, which they connect to their upcoming Second Horizon program.Get on the notification list for our launch of Second Horizon this fall: https://creativemindlife.com/Second-Horizon-Coaching/

How Coaches Explain Individuation
2026/08/24
This episode of Jung on Purpose, How Coaches Explain Individuation", we feature four Master Level Jungian Life Coaches (Darren Lyons, Ashley Noor, Tony Dina, and Karlie Dean) sharing how the individuation process transformed both their personal lives and their coaching practices. Across all four, a common thread emerges: real transformation starts with taking ownership of internal patterns rather than fixing external circumstances.
Key bullets:
Shadow work as practical tool: Darren reframes emotional triggers as information rather than obstacles, especially with clients recovering from addiction and compulsive habitsArchetypal family roles: Ashley traces adult relationship struggles back to childhood roles clients unconsciously keep replaying, and to what they're "carrying," not what others are doingReclaiming vocation from occupation: Tony's own "shadow event" around spiritual authority reshapes how he coaches corporate professionals toward meaningful work without needing to quit their jobsThe "intellectualizer" pattern: Karlie's client story shows how overthinking blocks vulnerability in both creative work and love, and how naming the pattern restores choiceResources:

Hear Coaches Explain Shadow Work
2026/08/17
Have you ever wondered what it is like to experience our NeuroMyndra® coaching method directly?
You may have watched videos on shadow work and Jung’s concept of Individuation, but what does it actually feel like in direct experience,
We often share our stories, but we thought it would be great to hear real-life examples of how the process of Individuation can make an impact on lives from graduates of our Jungian Life Coach training program and their clients.
We gathered a few of our Master-Level Jungian Life Coaches to be guests on our JUNG ON PURPOSE podcast this week to share their personal and professional experiences with shadow work. Hear insights and get inspired by Miguel Santos, Drew Turner and Dr. Karen Chen.
From anxious and "broken" to whole: Coach Miguel Santos shares how shadow work helped him get off anti-anxiety medication by learning to hear what his emotions were actually telling him.Freedom from the mask: Coach Drew Turner opens up about how confronting her shadow (the fear of being seen as "stupid") let her finally embody her real, playful self after years of hiding. From surviving to thriving: Dr. Karen Chen reflects on how facing her own emotional avoidance patterns rewired "the entire architecture" of her life. The power of projection: Debra and Dr. Rob unpack why shadow work isn't about fixing your past — it's about reclaiming the power you've been giving away to the outside world. Here's how to find out more about our Guest Master Jungian Life Coaches:

Why The Ego Blocks Your Purpose
2026/08/03
Your purpose isn't something you find. It's what's left when your ego finally gets out of the way.
In our next episode of JUNG ON PURPOSE, Why The Ego Blocks Your Purpose, we unpack what purpose actually is, and why so many people confuse it with career success or a life plan. Drawing on the Upanishads' concept of dharma, Jungian individuation, and the hero's journey, they explain the four pillars of a whole life (relationships, success, wellness, and dharma), why the "call" to purpose usually shows up as a midlife wall around 30, and why the ego resists that call at every turn. Discover why discomfort and resistance are often a sign you're on the right path, why mentors and coaches matter more than any tactic or strategy, and how true purpose requires the ego's version of you to symbolically die so a deeper, soul-led version can take over.
In this episode, we will unpack:
The four pillars that make up a whole, aligned lifeWhy so many people hit "the pause" around age 30Why resistance and discomfort often mean you're on the right pathHow the ego fights to keep you safe, familiar, and stuckWhy mentors and coaches carry your belief in yourself until you can

Ego Is Not The Enemy (Here's Why)
2026/07/27
You keep hearing that you have to "let go of the ego," but do you actually know what your ego is?
In this episode, we take on one of the most misunderstood words in personal growth: ego. Rather than picking one definition, we walk through four completely different lenses (neuroscience, Freud, Jung, and non-dual Eastern philosophy) and unpack how each one changes what "working on yourself" actually means.
We start with why neuroscience calls the ego an "emergent property," something that can be observed but never fully explained. Then we get into the real Freudian model: the ego as the exhausted middleman between the id's pleasure-seeking and the superego's internalized parent, and why the ego, in Freud's view, actually loves keeping you confused. From there we unpack Jung's very different take: the ego as the sun rising and setting, the persona we wear, the shadow we disown, and why real growth in midlife isn't about destroying the ego but shifting its center of gravity toward the larger Self. We close by unpacking the non-dual perspective: the idea that the ego isn't something to fix at all, but a misperception to see through, so you can create from wholeness instead of lack.
Whether you're a coach, a client, or just someone tired of hearing "ego" thrown around without context, we give you the actual map, so the next time someone says "check your ego," you'll know exactly which model they're (probably not) talking about.

Why We Fall in Love with the "Wrong" Person (Jung's insight)
2026/07/19
What if the person you fell in love with was never who you thought they were? In this episode of Jung on Purpose, we explore romantic love through the lens of Jungian psychology and non-dual philosophy, revealing that the overwhelming pull of attraction is actually your own soul image projected onto another person. We trace how the templates we absorbed from our parents quietly shape who we choose, why the honeymoon glow fades, and what surfaces in a long relationship once the projection falls away. Rather than treating relationship struggles as evidence that something needs fixing, we offer a more liberating view: your partner is a mirror, your patterns are an invitation to know yourself, and relationships may be the most powerful path to growth there is.
Key takeaways
Falling in love is a projection of your own soul image, which is why it feels transcendent and beyond your control. That doesn't make it less real; it's how the psyche opens us to deep connection with another person.Your early relationships with your mother and father created the template for who you're drawn to and how you relate, and these patterns run beneath awareness until you bring them into the light.Couples fit together like puzzle pieces through unconscious complementarity, so what frustrates you most about your partner often points back to something unseen in yourself. There is no finish line where you're finally "healed enough" for love. Growth is a lifelong discovery, and a conscious relationship is one of the richest places to do it.Share Your Thoughts with Us...

Why You Are Still Not Happy (After Years of Personal Growth)
2026/07/13
You've done the therapy or some coaching. Read the books. Practiced mindfulness, breathwork and somatic healing.
So why does lasting happiness still feel just out of reach?
In this episode of Jung on Purpose, Debra and Dr. Rob explore a profound insight from Jungian psychology and Eastern non-dual philosophy: the reason we're still suffering may be that we're looking for happiness in the wrong place. Discover how the mind creates the illusion of lack, why personal growth alone isn't enough, and how cultivating the witness perspective can free you from the endless cycle of seeking.
• Why success, relationships, and personal growth often fail to create lasting happiness
• The ancient Upanishadic teaching of the rope and the snake and how it explains suffering
• How shadow work reveals the projections that shape your experience of reality
• A simple practice for accessing the witness mind and finding greater peace in everyday life

Beyond Manifestation: Non-Dual Philosophy That Changes Everything
2026/07/06
In this episode of Jung on Purpose, we open a new summer series on non-dual philosophy and its practical implications for how we create, grow, and live. Drawing from Advaita Vedanta, Taoism, Christian mysticism, and the leading edge of neuroscience, we illuminate why so many people remain stuck despite doing all the "right" inner work, and how understanding the nature of the finite self changes everything.
What non-duality actually means across wisdom traditions, from Meister Eckhart's mystical union to Advaita's "not two," and why modern quantum science is beginning to echo these ancient insightsThe finite self and karma as conditioning rooted in survival patterns inherited through family, lineage, and the unconscious, not personal failure or lack of effortWhy the ego can't use spiritual knowledge for its own goals, and how obstacles showing up in your life are invitations to examine the unconscious rather than signals to try harderPurpose as the only true motivator in a non-dual framework, the internal "why" strong enough to sustain action without being destabilized by external resultsShare Your Thoughts with Us...
