Does Romans 4:13 Cancel Israel’s Land Promise? (Ep 245)
2026/10/23
Does Romans 4:13 expand Abraham’s inheritance to the whole world in a way that cancels Israel’s specific land promise? Dr. Peter Goeman examines the Old Testament promises, Paul’s argument in Romans 4, and relevant Jewish literature to evaluate that claim. He explains why “heir of the world” is best understood through Abraham’s role as the father of believing Jews and Gentiles—and why worldwide blessing does not require abandoning God’s particular promises to Israel. Can We Read the Old Testament Like Jesus and the Apostles? (Ep 242)
2026/09/25
When Jesus and the apostles quoted the Old Testament, did they preserve its original meaning or give it a new one? Furthermore, can we as Christians use the examples of Jesus and the Apostles to model our own reading of the Bible? In this episode, Peter Goeman examines what Jesus and Paul expected people to understand from Scripture. He surveys seven approaches to the New Testament’s use of the Old Testament and seven common ways New Testament writers use earlier texts. How the Old Testament Teaches Us to Read the Bible (Ep 241)
2026/09/11
How did people in the Old Testament understand God’s Word, and what can their example teach Christians about interpreting the Bible today? In this third installment of the hermeneutics series, Dr. Peter Goeman examines an often overlooked starting point for biblical interpretation: how Old Testament believers understood and responded to God’s revelation. From God’s covenant with Noah to Joseph’s confidence in the promises to Abraham, Dr. Goeman explores why the details of God’s words matter. He also examines Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice Isaac, Deuteronomy’s tests for identifying false prophets, and specific prophecies fulfilled within Old Testament history. These examples build a case for interpreting Scripture according to the author’s intended meaning, even when questions remain about how God’s promises fit together. The episode concludes with encouragement for ordinary Christians to study Scripture confidently. How Authors Communicate Meaning in the Bible (Ep 240)
2026/09/05
If authorial intent determines the meaning of Scripture, how can we actually know what a biblical author intended to communicate? In this second episode of the Hermeneutics 101 series, we look at how the text gives us access to authorial intent through grammar, vocabulary, historical context, genre, and normal conventions of human communication. Along the way, we consider Humpty Dumpty’s famous approach to language, the difference between literal and literalistic interpretation, how context determines the meaning of words, and why later biblical authors should not be used to erase the original meaning of earlier texts. Finally, we turn to an often-neglected aspect of biblical interpretation: the spiritual character of the interpreter and the importance of humility, repentance, prayer, and submission to Scripture. Who Decides What the Bible Means? A Crash Course in Hermeneutics (Ep 239)
2026/08/15
How can two people read the same passage of Scripture and reach entirely different conclusions? In the first episode of this Hermeneutics 101 series, Peter Goeman explains what hermeneutics is, how it differs from exegesis, and why interpretation is never as automatic as we might assume. He distinguishes meaning from application, considers whether the reader, text, or author controls meaning, and examines the problems with the idea that God intended meanings unknown to the human authors. Ultimately, sound hermeneutics is essential for preserving the clarity and authority of God’s Word.Time Stamps 0:00 Introducing Hermeneutics 1013:09 The “hermeneutical switch” behind theological disagreements6:08 What is hermeneutics?7:33 Hermeneutics versus exegesis8:29 Why interpretation is not automatic13:11 From hermeneutics to exegesis, theology, and application15:01 Essential terms for biblical interpretation17:37 One meaning, many applications23:52 Getting the right doctrine from the wrong text28:37 Who controls meaning: reader, text, or author?34:57 When a community controls interpretation37:08 Can a biblical text have multiple meanings?44:00 The divine author, human author, and sensus plenior48:40 Why a “fuller meaning” makes interpretation unstable55:29 The confluence of divine and human authorship56:31 Why sound hermeneutics matters1:04:08 Can the Old Testament be understood without the New?If you have found the podcast helpful, consider leaving a review on Itunes or rating it on Spotify. One of the Clearest Prophecies About Israel's Future (Ep 238)
2026/07/31
Does the Old Testament really teach a future for national Israel? In this episode, Peter Goeman walks verse-by-verse through Jeremiah 32, arguing that one of the clearest prophetic passages in Scripture leaves little room to deny God's future restoration of Israel. Along the way, he examines church history, prophetic interpretation, the New Covenant, and why fulfilled prophecy provides the pattern for understanding prophecy that is still future.Time Stamps 00:00 Introduction: Does Israel Have a Future?01:20 Why Many Christians Rejected Israel's Future07:20 The Niagara Bible Conference and the Return to Scripture10:50 Jeremiah 32: Judgment Before Restoration20:30 The New Covenant and Israel's Future28:10 Jeremiah 32:42—The Verse That Changes Everything38:00 Why Israel's Future Still Matters TodayMichael Vlach on Spiritual Vision vs New Creation Model: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HL_zdh7Tv6M If you have found the podcast helpful, consider leaving a review on Itunes or rating it on Spotify. 20 Questions that Expose Dispensationalism? (Ep 237)
2026/07/24
Do these twenty questions expose fatal problems with dispensationalism? Critics argue that dispensational theology cannot adequately explain key Bible passages concerning Israel and the church, the kingdom of God, Daniel’s seventieth week, the pretribulation rapture, biblical prophecy, and the New Covenant. In this episode, Peter Goeman works rapidly through twenty common objections to dispensationalism and asks whether they genuinely overturn the system. Along the way, he examines covenant theology, the interpretation of Old Testament prophecy, the “last trumpet,” the timing of the rapture, the future of Israel, and the relationship between the church and the New Covenant. Some questions raise legitimate issues, while others depend upon misunderstandings or outdated caricatures. Ultimately, the question is not whether the label “dispensationalism” can survive criticism, but whether its central beliefs accurately reflect what Scripture teaches. William Lane Craig is No Longer Premillennial? (Ep 236)
2026/07/11
William Lane Craig recently explained why he no longer believes Revelation 20 describes a literal millennial reign of Christ. In this episode, Peter Goeman examines Craig’s arguments, his interpretation of the first resurrection, and his claim that premillennialism creates insurmountable theological problems. Does Craig’s approach arise from careful biblical exegesis, or does he allow philosophical assumptions to override the straightforward meaning of Scripture? This discussion considers Revelation 20, Old Testament kingdom prophecies, millennial sacrifices, the resurrection, and the importance of authorial intent. Galatians 3, Israel, and the Singular Seed (Ep 233)
2026/06/07
Peter Goeman examines Galatians 3:16 and Paul’s claim that the promises were made to Abraham and to his singular “offspring,” who is Christ. By tracing the argument back to Genesis 22:17–18, comparing translation differences, and interacting with C. John Collins and Andrew E. Steinmann, he explains why Paul’s reading is rooted in the Old Testament context and why Christ as the seed of Abraham does not erase Israel’s identity or future promises. Why Greek and Hebrew Matter for Every Christian (Ep 232)
2026/05/24
The Bible was originally written in Hebrew, Greek, and a little Aramaic. But if we have so many good English translations today, do the original languages still matter? In this episode, we argue that Greek and Hebrew are not just academic extras for pastors and theologians. They are deeply connected to the health of the church, the clarity of Scripture, and the preservation of sound doctrine. We’ll look at why the Reformers cared so much about the biblical languages, especially Martin Luther and John Calvin. We’ll also consider what happens when churches, pastors, seminaries, and Christians begin to downplay the importance of returning to the original text of Scripture. Even if you never personally learn Greek or Hebrew, this episode explains why you should still care whether your pastors and teachers value them. How Old Was Isaac when Abraham Sacrificed Him? (Ep 231)
2026/05/09
How old was Isaac when Abraham took him to Mount Moriah in Genesis 22? In this short episode of The Bible Sojourner, we take a fresh look at one of the most famous passages in the Old Testament and ask a question many readers have never really considered: was Isaac a small child, or was he much older than we often assume? Drawing from the chronological clues in Genesis, I walk through the biblical data and argue that Isaac was likely old enough to understand what was happening, carry the wood for the sacrifice, and willingly submit to his father. That changes the way we read the story. Instead of picturing Abraham overpowering a helpless boy, this episode explores the possibility that Isaac knowingly trusted his father and participated in the event in a far more meaningful way. We also consider how this helps us understand Genesis 22, highlights the character of God, and sheds light on the substitutionary pattern that runs through Scripture.
