Road to Riyadh | China's Green Shoots: Can a new generation change the story?
2026/10/06
Chinese football has spent much of the past decade being defined by disappointment. Another World Cup cycle has ended without qualification, but beneath the struggles of the senior national team there are finally signs of something different.
China reached historic finals at both the AFC U23 and U17 Asian Cups in 2026, while a new generation of players is beginning to push towards the senior side under Shao Jiayi.
On the inaugural episode of Road to Riyadh, Paul Williams is joined by Xiaoou Zhao of Chinese Sports Diaries to ask whether those green shoots are evidence of genuine structural change.
They discuss the evolution of China's youth development system, the emergence of a new generation of coaches, the difficult bridge from youth football to the senior game, players including Wang Yudong, and what success should look like for China at the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027.
Can China finally build a national-team identity capable of turning youth promise into senior success?
Road to Riyadh is The Asian Game's journey towards the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, speaking to the people who know each nation best and exploring the players, coaches and stories shaping their road to Saudi Arabia.
10-Man Indonesia Hold Malaysia at GBK | FIFA ASEAN Cup Matchday 2 Reactions
2026/09/29
Indonesia and Malaysia played out a tense 0-0 draw at the Gelora Bung Karno, but the result only tells part of the story.
Ryan Walters is joined by Indonesian football journalist Ilham Batara Simatupang at GBK to break down a chaotic night in Jakarta, from Tom Haye's first-half red card and Indonesia's struggles with 10 men to Malaysia's missed opportunity to take advantage.
They discuss the chants for former Indonesia coach Shin Tae-yong around the stadium, questions over John Herdman's Plan B, Malaysia's second-half approach, and why a draw against their biggest rivals felt more like a defeat for Indonesia.
Plus, hear from inside the post-match press conferences as Herdman praises the GBK crowd as Indonesia's "X factor,", Maarten Paes reflects on another clean sheet, and Tan Cheng Hoe looks back on the chances Malaysia missed to win it.
Elsewhere, Singapore picked up their first win of the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Bangladesh, with reaction from Gavin Lee, Harhys Stewart and Thomas Dooley.
With Indonesia and Malaysia still locked together heading into the final round, can Indonesia find the goals they need against Bangladesh to finish the group strongly?

World Cup Daily: Japan bow out in heartbreaking fashion
2026/06/30
Japan's campaign has ended at the Round of 32 after a narrow 2-1 loss to Brazil despite taking a first half lead through Kaishu Sano.
Where did it go wrong in the second half? Is Moriyasu the right man to take this team forward and, with a premature exit, how do we assess their campaign?
Joining us to answer those questions are ESPN's Gabe Tan from Houston, and Michael Church in Dallas.

World Cup Daily: Heartbreak for Iran as Saudi Arabia and Iraq exit with a whimper
2026/06/27
There was heartbreak for Iran in Seattle, with a stoppage time winner being overruled by a marginal offside call; a result that would have secured them second place in the group and automatic progression to the knockout rounds.
Hope still exists, however, of progressing as one of the best third-placed teams. There is no hope for Saudi Arabia and Iraq, meanwhile, who both departed the tournament with meek performances in their final group stage matches.
We're joined by the BBC's Mani Djazmi and Wael Jabir to look at a day of mixed fortunes for Asia.

World Cup Daily: Korea humbled by South Africa as Qatar bow out
2026/06/25
It was a day of huge disappointment, as one of Asia's heavyweights, Korea Republic, slipped up in their final group stage fixture to miss out on automatic progression to the knockout rounds in a performance that posed many questions as to the credentials of this side.
In Seattle, meanwhile, Qatar showed fight but were ultimately defeated by Bosnia & Herzegovina to end their campaign.
We're joined by ESPN's Gabe Tan from Monterrey and Mohamed El Ghawarby from Doha to dissect and analyse the two results.

World Cup Daily: Asian trio put to the sword
2026/06/24
Despite the hope offered by Jordan, who took the lead against Algeria, it's been a humbling 24 hours for Asian teams as all of Iraq, Jordan and Uzbekistan tasted defeat.
While Iraq and Uzbekistan came up against teams fancied to go all the way in the form of France and Portugal respectively, Jordan fancied their chances against fellow Arab nation Algeria, and for a period it looked like an historic win was on the cards before it all fell apart late.
We're joined by Martin Lowe and Ravshan Nikimbaev to discuss and analyse all three results.

Charyl Chappuis | Swiss Blood, Thai Heart
2026/06/22
Football chooses us. We chase the highs. And one day… the game ends.
Host Ryan Walters sits with players in the ultimate what-if scenario: seconds from a World Cup Final as their careers flash before their eyes. Matches, milestones, moments, mistakes, people. This is football in full life, in full vision. This is Tunnel Vision.
In this episode, Ryan sits down with Charyl Chappuis, the Swiss-Thai midfielder who built a career across two continents. A FIFA U17 World Cup winner with Switzerland, and 2014 AFF Championship hero with Thailand, he quickly became one of Thai football's most beloved figures.
Honest, warm, and quietly profound, this is the story of a man who gave everything to two countries and spent his life proving that belonging isn't about where you're from, it's about what you give.
