Chris Otepka of Troubled Hubble. Troubled Hubble is a new-to-me band that just reissued their wonderful 2005 album Making Beds in a Burning House. This conversation came about because of Jim Hanke whose work on his podcast Vinyl Emergency is an inspiration to me and The Marinade. When Jim speaks, I listen and I am so glad I did. Troubled Hubble is one of those bands that would have been among my favorites had they graced my ears at the time of Making Beds in a Burning House's release. A great sense of melody. A little nerdy. A band that slalom's through genre. Exactly the kind of thing I was devouring in 2005. Better late than never. I'm grateful this record came into my life and for the opportunity to connect with Chris.

Last year, Joelton toured with John Moreland, the Mountain Goats, Susto, Parker Millsap, and others. This year he played with Steve Earle and went on to release one of my favorite records of the year called Crowd Pleaser. Joelton can flat write. This album covers a ton of emotional ground and leaves the listener thrilled and wanting more.  

Kirby Baby is the nom de plume of Kirby Brown, a singer and songwriter who is going through a huge transition with his latest release Inside Man. Inside Man a collection of existential musings with a blend of indie rock that is a huge pivot from the Americana songs Kirby has been known for.  This record was the medicine I didn't know I needed and it is an honor to bring you my conversation with Kirby Baby. Evan Barber is a singer and songwriter from Southwest Georgia, who grew up playing southern rock and jam band songs with his best friends. His most recent record Until The Thunder is a personal collection of roots music that finds Barber painting pictures of life and love in The South.  I caught up with Evan via Zoom after becoming inspired by his live set at the legendary historic Grant's Lounge in downtown Macon, GA, earlier this year. Jesse Daniel Edwards is a songwriter from California who now makes his home in Nashville. Edwards has lived an incredible life. He has gone from growing up without television or internet, to leaving home at 16, to tour managing for the likes of Jason Isbell, Lucinda Williams, and Morrissey(!) and making unique, fascinating records. This year he has released not one, not two, but three wonderful collections of songs- two EPs and a full length. I highly recommend all three. Chris Margolin is a singer, songwriter, educator, father, and husband from the Pacific Northwest. The man is an inspiration. Middle school teacher by day, rock n' roller by night- Chris has been educating the youth of America for over twenty years and moving crowds by night for thirty. Despite a demanding day job, and the responsibilities of having a family, he maintains a prolific recording schedule that includes his latest wonderful offering David St., which finds Margolin and his band the Contraband collaborating to touch on country, grunge, 90s pop, and so much more goodness!  This was a long time in the making. Luke Pelletier is a singer, songwriter, visual artist, and record label owner based in Los Angeles. His new album American Cheese will be released on August 1, 2025. This record is a wild ride. It leads off with the story of Luke running afoul of the law before his bipolar diagnosis and then careens into fascinating tale after fascinating tale. As you will hear in this episode, the bipolar is now being treated and Luke is making really cool art across multiple mediums. Guetts and Sma from the band Crumbsnatchers are our guests for Episode 194. Crumbsnatchers hails from Nashville, Tennessee, and boasts a singular sound and a live show that compels devotion. Guetts, the frontman and principal songwriter, has lived a fascinating life whose experiences translate to records that remind of your favorite bands while defying comparison. We were supposed to catch up with Crumbsnatchers during Bonnaroo 2025, but the weather and the powers that be had other designs. Bonnaroo was cancelled after a magical day and a half during which I had the pleasure of seeing the band twice in a twenty-four hour period. Thankfully, our paths were destined to connect just a couple days later in Nashville. Guetts invited me over to his house outside Music City and we had a blast talking about the origins of the band, the importance of Bonnaroo to their development, impromptu parties at a certain campground's pool, and so much more!
