Content Warning This episode of Doin Time contains audio images of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who have died, graphic discussion of deaths in custody and distressing material about human rights violations in prison.  On this week's show we brought you an interview with Sohini Mehta Senior Lawyer from the Human Rights Law Centre, who discussed the Queensland Government's attack on human rights in prison which will fuel the incarceration crisis.  The bill was spoken about in detail including the denial for people serving life sentences to have access to parole for at least five years, including children sentenced to life imprisonment under adult sentencing laws oncie they become eligible for parole.This dangerous Bill is called the protecting Queenslanders from Dangerous Prisoners and strengthening victims rights Amendment Bill 2026 which are extraordinary measures with the power to override the Act usually reserved for a war.  For further information please go to the Human Rights Law Centre Website.The Second extended interview featured Bellingham Youth law's Policy and Advocacy Manager who gave evidence to the National Youth Inquiry.  Naomi spoke about the Inquiry and the subsequent Senate report entitled Australia's Youth Justice and Incarceration System. Naomi unpacked the report and discussed evidence that was presented to the Inquiry. She talked about the report being a significant step towards the much needed reform to reduce the mumber of Australian children in prison.  In particular First Nations children were highlighted as being over incarcerated. They were two of twelve activists planning legal action against police ban on entering security zone near Perth Weapons Expo. Extraordinary police powers have been put in place carrying prison terms and fines. The Human Rights Law Centre is involved with this legal challenge in the Supreme Court. Violet and Brad discussed criminalisation of dissent. For further information please go to the Human Rights Law Centre website.          The second extended interview featured Debbie Kilroy, CEO of Sisters Inside and one of Australia's leading advocates for criminalised women and children. She discussed the the Crimes Amendment (Prohibiting the Strip Searching of Children) Bill 2026 put forward by Lidia Thorpe, Independent Aboriginal Victorian Senator. The bill focuses on baning strip search of children in prison. Lived experience of strip search and distressing material about trauma was discussed. Overincarceration of Aboriginal children was talked about in the context of colonisation. Content WarningThis episode of Doin Time contains audio images of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples who have died, graphic discussion of deaths in costody and distressing material about folks in prison.On this week's show there was an extended interview with Sophie Jest, Senior Community Outreach Lawyer from Fitzroy Legal Service. Sophie talked about the Prison Law Handbook edited by Fitzroy Legal Service. Sophie is a staunch Abolitionist Activist who spoke in detail about the handbook and how this will help prisoners with complaints and information about parole, to name but a few examples. Please check out the Fitzroy Legal Services website for more information.  The handbook will be in prison libraries shortly and is an excellent resource to assist people in prison.There was also an extended interview with Boe Spearim, a First Nations Gamilaraay and Kooma radio host and podcaster.   Boe yarned about mining on sacred sites and gave an account of what is happening with Native title and legal battles with this ongoing campaign.

Content warning This episode of Doin time contains audio images of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples who have died, and graphic discussion of deaths in custody, and traumatic prison experiences and discussion about strip searches. The first interview was a yarn with Kelly Flanigan First nations Advocate from Figjam Collective.There was a big yarn abou the Human Rights Law Centre and Flat out calling on the Victorian Government to establish a dedicated legal service for women, trans and gender diverse people in prison to challenge human rights abuses and hold authorities to account.  Kelly spoke about her lived experience in prison, which was linked to a new report entitled The Dignitity Behind Bars.  Kelly talked about Solitary confinement and parole and how she could not get legal support in prison, which created trauma and vilation of human rights. The second interview was with Jarod Sandell-Hay Interim President of People With Disability Australia. There was a big discussion about the NDIS Amendment securing the NDIS for Future Generations Bill 2026 condemning Parliament for proceeding despite the overwhelming evidence of the unacceptable harm this will cause.  For further information please check the People With Disability Australia website.

There are also audio images of asylum seekers and refugees' lived experience and trauma. On today's show you first heard from Rathy who is a Tamil refugee and a wonderful activist who has done lots of work in regards to Visa equality and helping to address violations of Human Rights against refugees and asylum seekers. Rathy is a speaker at the upcoming event Don't Let the Racists Divide Us: Building the Fight Against One Nation, organised by Unite Against Racism. Rathy shared her personal story. The event that Rathy is speaking at is a forum at Trades Hall at 630 pm on Wednesday 9 September. The second interview featured Lucy Honan, Australian Education Union State Councillor, member of the Rank and File group Fight the Crisis and solidarity activist who discussed the events in broader detail. There is also a rally at the State Library at 2pm on Saturday 24 October 2026. The interview focused on building the movement to stop One Nation. The final interview was with Rohan Simpson, Senior Lawyer at the Human Rights Law Centre. Rohan spoke the Cook's Government's anti Protest bills which raise Constitutional Concerns, and provide extraordinary police powers and stifle peaceful protest.  A powerful connection was made to prisons, and the impact on marginalised communities such as First Nations communities was also discussed. The Human Rights Law Centre opposes these bills and wrote a letter to the WA Attorney General Dr. Tony Buti. Rohan made the very important point that the laws are at odds with Australia's International Human Rights law obligations.

This is a Unite against Racism forum Donet let the racists divide us building the fight against One Nation.  David spoke in detail about these events.  Next, there was an extended interview and yarn with Maggie Munn, a Gunggari person and the Director of First Nations Justice at the Human rights Law centre.  Maggie spoke about Australia's racist youth justice policies that are failing First nations kids.  It was highlighted that essentially all Governments across Australia need two work on changing dangerous and discriminatory laws hurting First Nations children,families and communities. A new report was also discussed, entitled With us, not against us, A systemic inquiry to learn from the experiences of children who entered the criminal justice system before 14 Commission for Children and Young people,2026

Tabitha Lean Aboriginal Prison Abolitionist and activist also joined the interview.  Tabitha Lean an organising member of the National network of incarcerated women and girls.  Tabitha and Debbie duscussed a recent report entitled The Business of family Policing in Queensland, which documented harrowing stories of women and children in prison and Residential settings, whithin the context of colonisation. Marisa interviewedMadeka Penrith and her Partner sam and coleagues about a beautiful Archival Exihibition in regards to her Grandfather Ray Jackson who has since passed away.  It is a historical exhibition about his life and activism.  Content warning This Episode of Dointime contains audio images of Abboriginal and Torrestrait islander people who have died and discussion of deahts in custody.  Then Marisa was joined by Brett Collins from Justice action who talked about having computers in cells for prisonsers, and the work of Justice action.  TThis included a conference that he attended in Adelaide about Prisoners.  Finally Marisa interviewed David Glanz about a protest happening on Tuesday 30 June at the Melbourne Town hall about censorship and repression.

The interview was from an older doin show presented by Sasha, and it was around the time of the watch Committee which was founded by Ray. Uncle passed away on 2015 and Permission was given by the family to air this very special segment. Finally, Marisa interviewed Violet, a Flotilla Activist about being on the flotilla, trying to deliver life saving aid tostarving Civilians in Gaza.  Violet spoke indetail about her texperiences at the hands of the guards and authorities.  It was a powerful interview focusingon the importance of exposing genocide of Gaza.Violations of human rights were discussed in detail.
