On today's show:Marisa read a media release from the Human Rights Law Centre: entitled: "UN Visit Prompts Scrutiny of Australia's Shameful Detention and Prison Regime". This was followed up by an interview with Brett Collins from Justice Action, a community organisation advocating for people involved in the criminal justice and mental health systems. Brett also talked about preparing for the Youth Justice Senate Inquiry. Submissions close on December 19th. Justice Action have asked the Senate Inquiry to ensure that all the 19 youth justice prisons have on their noticeboards an invitation for the children in there to be involved with their views too. First Nations man Cameron Welsh was also discussed. Justice Action issued a media release about him being beaten by guards in Cessnock and attempts to change the narrative surrounding the beating. Cameron's family have asked for help. Lastly, Marisa interviewed David Glanz from the Refugee Action Collective about the announcement that Nazis are organising racist 'Australia First' rallies for Invasion Day in 2026. David also gave updates on what's happening with refugees and asylum seekers, highlighting the UN's visit to Australia, prompting scrutiny of Australia's shameful detention and prison regime. She is a Gumbaynggirr – Dunghutti woman living on community in Nambucca Heads, north coast NSW. June talked about a program she is involved with called Shore Track in Macksville NSW supporting disengaged youth to get their lives back on track. Overincarceration of First Nations youth was also discussed. After that Marisa did an interview with Tom Fiebig from the Refugee Action Collective who gave an eyewitness account of the anti-immigration rally happening in Melbourne yesterday. It was also discussed that it is going to take community mobilisations to say 'migrants are welcome", and to get the Nazis and the racists off our streets. Finally Marisa spoke with Aunty Alison Fuller, First Nations woman from Grandmothers Against Removal, about the importance of recognising the Stolen generation and Grandmothers Against Removal Victoria needing people to help children and young people in child protection. The importance of donations to Grandmothers Against Removal Victoria was also discussed. Aunty Alison shared her own personal story about how she and her sisters were stolen in the 1960's.

Marisa invited Vicki on the show to alert listeners about a landmark class action highlighting horrors of strip searches, and hear an overview of what has happened to date. Following a class action led by leading law firm Slater and Gordon and Redfern Legal Centre, a judgment was handed down in the Supreme Court of NSW which awarded significant damages to the lead plaintiff, Raya Meredith, for an unlawful strip search undertaken by NSW Police at the Splendour in the Grass Festival in 2018. After that, Marisa interviewed Cath Strong from the Defend Dissent Coalition who also did some brilliant MCing at last Tuesday's rally at Parliament House which had a number of speakers discussing new police powers. Cath joined Marisa to give a report back and talk about the Justice Legislation Amendment Bill, focusing on draconian anti-protest laws the Allan Government has been proposing. Finally, Marisa interviewed Dr Tamar Hopkins: Expert on racial profiling data, and Founder Centre Against Racial Profiling. She discussed findings, based on an analysis of Victoria Police's own 2024 data, revealing that Aboriginal people are now 15 times more likely to be searched and 10 times more likely to have force used against them than white people. Racialised communities are subjected to over-policing that frequently escalates into police violence.

Joining us on the show first of all we had Monique Huley Associate Legal Director and Sohini Mehta Senior Lawyer from the Human Rights law centre, who discussed the proposed Adult Time for Violent Crime Bill and how this undermines Victoria's human rights obligations both under international law and Victoria's own Charter of Human Rights — which provides that children should be treated in an age-appropriate way.  Then, Marisa interviewed Karen Fletcher CEO of flat out which is an independent, not for profit, community-based organisation that aims to prevent women and trans and gender-diverse people from entering and returning to prison. Karen gave an update on the recent Housing that was organised, and also speaked about the work of Flat out, focusing on criminalised women. Every woman, trans and gender diverse person deserves to live a life free from trauma, injustice and violencelence. Finally, Marisa interviewed Lee Carnie ceo from Zerthlaw who gave some more background about the Victorian Government's proposed overhaul of the youth justice system, describing it as rushed, punitive, and dangerously out of step with evidence-based approaches to reducing youth crime.

 First up Marisa spoke with Professor Azadeh Dastyari who discussed challenges Australia has faced in legislating a Human Rights Act, the benefits an Australian Human Rights Act would provide for people, and why Australia could be closer than ever in the political opportunity to achieve one. Professor Dastyari co-authored the report 'Legislating Human Rights Acts: From Whitlam to Now' .Marisa then interviewed Iain Rintoul from the Refugee Action Coalition about the March for Australia rally that happened on 19 October. Ian was a speaker at the 'Unite Against Racism' action in Sydney.Finally, Marisa spoke with David Glanz from the Refugee Action Collective who gave an eyewitness account of the Melbourne March for Australia.

Farida has lived experience of disability, and spoke about her Long Covid, and the impact on the health of the community should police ask protestors to remove masks because of extended powers.  That rally happened on 12 August on the steps of the Victorian Parliament.We were also be joined by Stacey in the studio. She has lived experience of prison, and is from Figjam and was also a speaker at the Bail Saves Lives Snap Rally last week. Stacey spoke about her lived experience of prison and also wcussed the  bail laws, and how this impacts marginalised communities, particularly First Nations people, and youth.

He shared the good news that the Myall Creek Massacre has been approved to by the Education Department of NSW to be taught in schools as part of the curriculum. Then we were joined  by Erica Dixon, recent graduate from NAISDA and Myall Creek committee member, who talked about Naidoc Week, and their awesome community work, in Dance, Performance and Education. Erica also talked about young leaders and the theme of NAIDOC Week, namely continuing the generations.Finally, we spoke with Kuyan Mitchell from Impact Policy. He's doing amazing work in the community, primarily looking at making certain that First nations communities are embeded in policies.  We discussed  young people's leadership, NAIDOC Week, stolen wages and Kuyan's personal story.
